Nets' Power Forward Count: Zero

The Nets added Shelden Williams to the roster Tuesday, but Avery Johnson indicates the new guy will be used primarily as a center. That means they've still got a hole at the power forward position. And if things don't change before then, Johnson says that D-Leaguer Dennis Horner could start at the four against Amar'e Stoudemire and the Knicks on Saturday. "Or you’ll see us go with Petro and Brook or maybe Damion James at the 4," Johnson says.

Stephen Graham has even been playing some power forward. James and Graham should be the small forwards on Saturday. Johnson says that Travis Outlaw will be cleared to practice on Friday, but won't play in Saturday's game. Friday happens to be the deadline to waive a player with the amnesty clause.

Why else would he re-sign knowing Dwight’s staying? I think this trade is moving closer and closer to happening.

Not what I meant. Reading it again, i’ll just say that he says it’s a slim chance he’s staying, but Dwight’s situation was why he re-signed. Maybe he knows what could potentially come back in a trade, and likes the pieces. Only thing I can ascertain.

If DH12 wants to be traded, he has to force them to trade him before January 1st

or he is going to lose huge chunk of money if he is traded after that. Essentially he has to stay with Magic to get that money. I don’t think he wants to leave that kind of money. So if he is not traded by January 1st, he probably would be a Magic. Now that is a gamble from Magic and end up in a disaster for them if DH12 decides to leave after this season.

So DH12 sending mix signals is confusing at best.January 1st is about 18 days away

I'm tired of the Dwightmare lets move on.

I personally think Brook will really breakout this year, being healthy, playing with D Will and 4th year or so in the league often isa breakout for big. if we revisit this as the dealine and Brook is looking great (his true value is seen), Bynum is injured and the magic are desperate because they have no more time to posture. Then we can get a better deal and not take back Hedo. I personally love Lopez and am ready to move forward with him either way. So at this stage my position is screw it. Nene up?

What if Brook isn’t progressing?
What if(with our luck) Bynum stays healthy?

Judging by J-Rich’s comment, Otis knows play time is over. Now it’s just a matter of getting it done now before any of the variables I mentioned above don’t work out.

Um because there isn’t even a CBA yet. If the new CBA said that you could amnesty a player you traded for, then we definitely wouldn’t use it on Outlaw. However, since we now know we can’t, once the rules are in place, the Nets can make a decision. <--- eLonepb

new thread

whats up, how about we trade for Millsap?

This Dwight thing is getting crazy. I really want him on the team, but the season starts in less than two weeks. I still think we could very well get Dwight before the week is up, but if we don’t then what do we do? I was a strong supporter of Nene as the plan B, but I thought of an alternative plan that would keep us flexible.

How about we trade for Paul Millsap? His numbers seem similar to Nene, and he used to play with Deron. Therefore, this could really please Deron. The most important part tho, is that his contract is half of what Nene would be getting. By trading for him, we would fill the PF spot with a solid player as well as maintain the ability to bring back both Hedo and Dwight.

Without Dwight:
Deron / Brooks / James / Millsap / Brooklyn Lopez

With Dwight:
Deron / Brooks / Hedo / Millsap / Dwight Howard

Now the question is, do we have the assets to get Millsap and still have enough to trade for Dwight? Would Morrow, Farmar, and a 2014 first be enough? Is it too much? I don’t know how high O’Conner is on Millsap, but him and Billy are friends. Also, the jazz have plenty of talented big men already(favors, kanter, jefferson). This way we would still have two 2012 firsts to offer and Lopez to the Magic.

By doing this move, we would be competitive this year, make Deron happy, and have capspace to sign Dwight next year as an FA.

What do you guys think?

Hmm not a bad thought...

…Why does it sound so familiar to me? Probably because I proposed a similar scenario in the last thread. Crazy stuff right there. My idea however was to just steal Millsap from Utah when they weren’t paying attention because they probably wouldn’t notice one big man missing from the fleet. No way we trade for him though. We’d at least have to give them our picks at a minimum I’d assume.

NJ get Nene on S&T and Dwight
DEN gets Brook, absorbs Turkoglu Contract
ORL gets Faried, Gallinari and one of their young Centers along with cash and draft picks

Not sure Den would do it with Brook only having one year remaining on his contract and im sure alot more players would need to be moved to make it all add up as well

I agree Elone

more, is that Nene is patiently waiting. Which one can only assume is that Nene also wants to come play in NJ with Deron (knowing that Denver is just not going to compete anymore). So I’m sure he already has the agreement with Fegan, come Thursday or Friday either Nets have Dwight or they have Nene.

One interesting thing I just thought of, could Nene really have meant what he said, that his next contract isn’t about the money, but about competing. Wishful thinking, but what if Nene is waiting to see if Nets land Dwight this week, to then sign on as the PF?? Yes, he’d take a massive hit $$$, but like he said, he invested smart, he’s made a lot, now he just wants to win….

one can hope

Except I don’t know if I could bring myself to cheer on another team. Might just stop watching the NBA.

But I do believe BK will pull through. Even without Howard, Brook, Deron and Nene would be a really nice trio while also leaving us cap room for next year.

Chris Mannix on Jim Rome just now

Said the following about Dwight:

  • He’s leaving Orlando but it will be a Carmelo drama
  • He decided long ago he wanted an out. Loves idea of playing next to Deron for next 5 years in Brooklyn
  • Orlando is going to take time, will be gone by deadline
  • Lakers #1 priority is Dwight
  • Doesn’t make sense to give up Bynum & Gasol and Lakers probably won’t, and Orlando probably doesn’t have interest in Gasol’s 3 years
  • Bynum is best piece in any of these possible trades
  • Can take bad a different bad contract with the TE (Jameer)

Mannix is not credible

some of that is true, but when he says the Magic will take their time, he’s full of moiso. No one(including him) brings up the financial ramifications. Idon’t care what Otis wants to do(spite Dwight or what). In an age when most players are about money, this is no different, and don’t think Fegan won’t make that VERY clear.

Ok I'm just gonna say what I'm sure plenty of us have been thinking at least once during this circus...

…What affect would a Bynum injury have on this saga? Seems like its not a matter of “If” but “when”. At what point of the season would the annual Bynum injury most benefit The Nets? If he falls and seriously hurts himself later on today during a shoot around should we rejoice or rejoice while wishing it had happened closer to the deadline so Orlando wouldnt have much time and may end up accepting a much lower offer from us than what we currently have out there? I know it’s terrible to hope for a person to get injured and I would normally feel bad if it happened but luckily I can just think back to the playoffs last season and his disgraceful little stunt that got him suspended. Karma better be wearing a Nets jersey right now

Lakers Vs Nets for Howard

Here is my theory (I think we should be positive at this point):

I am convinced that the Magic like Lopez more than Bynum.

1) The Lakers would be out of their mind if they don’t trade Bynum, first round pick for Dwight Howard and Hedo. Kupchak is not dumb.

2) The Nets are at least offering Lopez, 2 first rounders, and taking back Hedo.

Of the 2, I believe the Magic like package 2 more. The long wait is based on whether or not the Lakers cave and give them Gasol too. The inclusion of Gasol is holding up the trade. Therefore, that’s what it will come down to. If the Lakers cave, they will get Howard. If not, it will come down to the Nets or staying with the Magic.

by nazem275 on Dec 13, 2011 5:08 PM EST reply actions

This logic is flawed

Because you believe the Magic GM, Otis Smith, to be of sound and rational mind.

He is not.

elone it's not flawed because

Fegan is driving this bus. Otis could be the worst GM ever, but when someone is pressured as much as I think Otis is being pressured, he will eventually have no choice. As nazem said, it only blows up if the Lakers cave, which I do not think they will.

I'm bipolar. Just remember to read this before you respond to or read my comments. Someone here forgot to.

How can you be convinced of something there is no evidence to support?

If Orlando liked Lopez MORE than Bynum…or even just as much as Bynum, we wouldn’t be talking about this anymore because we’d most likely already have Dwight in a Nets jersey. The fact that Orlando covets Bynum far more than Lopez is generally accepted by those in the know it seems. We are all puzzled by this because logic would suggest The Magic would go into rebuild mode and obviously our package trumps all but who said logic plays a part in the day to day lives of Otis Smith and The Orlando Magic FO? Don’t tell him they are rebuilding because he sure doesn’t seem to think they’d need to

This team is pathetic...so is management

They clearly don’t care about New Jersey at all!!! I hate their dumb slogan Jersey Strong Brooklyn Ready. They don’t care in the least about performing this year if they don’t get Dwight..so just tank the season and you better hope Deron signs back up or you won’t be “Brooklyn Ready” either.

by jbbaum on Dec 13, 2011 5:09 PM EST reply actions

I live in Jersey

and dont care if they play in Newark or Brooklyn… it’s too close not to follow them to Brooklyn

by nazem275 on Dec 13, 2011 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t mean it in that way….they see the Newark situation similar to being a lame duck. They really don’t care at all about winning this year. To tell you the truth, they were probably hoping the strike didn’t end, they are going to end up with a net operating loss for the year by being stuck in Newark. I

If they don’t get Dwight…they are going to fill the roster with cheap parts like last year…just watch

by jbbaum on Dec 13, 2011 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

yea i hear ya

But how can BK fold when he has a chance. You really can’t. Howard is an extremely unique talent. I am not advocating tanking a season, but the potential to get Dwill and Howard together is worth the risk (the guy wants to come to NJ – that is unprecedented), even if it means losing out on Nene. I would be okay with that as a Nets fan. If the Deron situation breaks down after Dwight fails, then we can deal Deron and get draft picks this year in a deep draft pool. I believe in Billy King.

by nazem275 on Dec 13, 2011 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

But I don’t have as much faith as others in Billy King. Yeah he made the deal for Deron Williams…but im in the minority thinking he gave up way to many assets (draft picks, I’m fine with giving up Favors and Harris). I think it’s still up in the air if Billy King is a legit GM….

I’m also in the minority who thinks we should not sign Nene…because it will only weaken our draft picks that we can package at a later date for Dwight Howard (Nene will equate to a few more wins). I also think his cap hit is very high.

I think it really is Dwight or bust. And if Deron leaves… it will only make Billy King look worse for giving up the Nets future (draft picks and Favors) so he has a lot riding on resigning that guy…he went all in…he better come out on top or he will be fired.

Stephen Graham?

Should be in the D-League, or playing for Outer Mongolia. If we go into the season with Stephen Graham as a rotation player, than Billy King should be fired! We’ve had the same priority for the last eight months: get a better small forward.

He averaged 15 and 14 with D-Will and has always had high rebound percentages.

He stopped being a chucker on offense and got more playing time. That was the main difference IMO.

Plus, someone will need to get rebounds if the Nets do indeed have Nene and Brook as the starters.

by Ccrules2791 on Dec 13, 2011 5:36 PM EST reply actions

I'm still confident we get Dwight even if we sign Nene

If Dwight makes it to free agency.. as long as we stay around 10 million under the cap next year, we can maneuver some contracts to get to 18 million. The key is Dwight wanting to be here, which he does.

If Orlando tries to trade him in March.. and we can’t take Turk, they have their own dumbass GM to blame. It’s not like any other team will be able to take on Turk either. It’ll come down to Lopez vs. Bynum.. and in 4 months, one will be injured, while the other will be averaging 25ppg – compliments to Deron.

Go ahead and sign Nene Billy, I’m witchu.

Alright King, if we can’t get D12 just sign Nene and be done with it. When we are talking about starting Petro or Horner in a preseason game, we have to just move on.

We've established a deadline that I believe is Sunday

If we don’t get Dwight by then, we turn to Nene. Until then, we continue to make offers for Dwight. It’s a preseason game, and as much as I’d love to see the Nets beat the Manhattan Knicks, we’ve got to adhere to our gameplan for making a big splash in this “offseason.”

"This isn’t fantasy or rotisserie basketball. Why would Denver want Outlaw? Would you?" - Al Iannazzone

by strange-brew on Dec 13, 2011 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

lets face it. Orlando is not going to deal him before the season

they dont want a 25 win team in that new arena. They dont care about shedding Hedo otherwise they wouldnt have gave deals to J-Rich, Wafer, Big Baby, and Larry Hughes.

Dwight is not AI, He’s not Melo, He enjoys Orlando but he isnt going to turn on the team and destroy the locker room to force his way out.

Nets need to act like Dwight isnt coming and put some players around D-will and keep him happy. Nene will need to be here and he will get at least 15 mil a year, deal with it, big men get overpaid. Kwame Brown just got 7 million, Deandre Jordan just got 10.5 million a year.

Now luckily the nets can still amnesty outlaw because aside from nene they still need some more bench players. Reggie Evans and Josh Howard may be low cost high reward signings that pay off and still holding out hope they can get AAA.

And then hopefully they can trade for Oj Mayo, Marcus Camby, Boris Diaw, Michael Beasley, Carlos Delfino, or Andres Nocioni to give the team depth but flexibility for next year if Dwight is officially on the block later or he opts in for the 2012 season and waits for 2013 to be a free agent

a haywood amnesty here and a marion trade there with a renouncing of kidd and terry’s cap holds and they have about 30-35 million in cap space. Now if Lebron, Wade, and Bosh started off at 15 mil apiece i think Dwight and D-will could make that same compromise to play together along with Dirk

but they can clear enough salary to have at least 30 mil in cap

butler, chandler, stevenson, brewer, and rudy and barea are basically gone now

kidd and terry both expire next year and Odom has a team option that can be declined that would leave them at payroll of 41 million

Amnesty Haywood: 33 miilion

Trade Marion: 25 million

Dirk, Beabouis, Jones, VC,(assuming they sell/trade draft choices) = approximately 25-28 million payroll with a salary cap floor at 55-58 million.

Saying Lebron, Wade, and Bosh started off at 14.5 million. Would Dwight and Deron start off at 15 mil apiece together?

I always knew Mavs were going to be a player in all this

but like I have said in another post.

We have been through this already. Kidd had an opportunity to go to the Spurs and join Duncan. He decided to stay here. I feel the same as I felt then.

It is up to Dwill. If he wants to stay he will, if he doesnt there is nothing we can do about it.

I would be ok with nene and Lopez. If Dwill leaves, we will find another Passing PG somewhere. We lost Kidd and got dwill. We will lose Dwill and get another Passing PG.

by orangeeater on Dec 13, 2011 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

seems like that is the plan

they both opt out.. NJ has a chance.. but sriously Cuban is the man and I can see him selling both Dwight and Deron on Dallas.. and getting them to take less to go there. Kidd and Dirk will sell hard. Who will sell NJ hard? No state income tax. Wont have to deal with the Heat or Knicks or Bulls until the FInals.

Why on earth would Deron or Dwight stay in the East? In Dallas they have a great chance for the finals every seasonb

by orangeeater on Dec 13, 2011 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

He will be traded for sure!

Why?
Because under no circumstances will the ORL take another Shaq 2.0. They would have to leave the state of Florida if that happens, especially with the new stadium.

Also, is ORL firing SVG and OS with a same breath? Are they getting rid of a bunch of Outlaw contracts that they have ???

As of D12 of course he wants to be traded. He wants the money and also wants out.

A VP for a week, Alex Whatever, did not change his mind with one sitting.

D12 thought this through for a LONG time.

Dwight: 19.5 mil
Deron: 17.8 mil

That adds up to $58.2 mil. What if Dwight and Deron choose to start their salaries at $17 mil? That will be enough to add all cap holds.

Possible, yes…but highly unlikely

and 11 of them would count against Dallas cap in 2012 if they only had Dirk under contract by then,

I understand being all in for Dwight..

And trust me, I am too. But we should sign Nene anyway and let Otis smack himself in the face come march when NO TEAM will be able to take on Turk.

We’ve established only the Nets, Lakers, and Mavericks are willing to give up anything serious because they know Dwight will stay there…

Of those three, only the Nets and Lakers have something worth talking about…

Of those two, we are the only ones who can take on Turk.

Make a 24 hour threat, and let them cry about it later if they don’t fold. We’re NOT out of the running if we sign Nene.

That sounds fine and dandy

But is that enough to keep Deron here next season? I’m not so sure about that. We went all in on Dwight because that was the only sure way to get Deron to resign, now we don’t know for sure if thats going to happen.

We also screwed up by not going after a SF. Our only option now is AK47 who is asking for 8mil a year.

Yes they can, if they take a pay cut, they could make a scary team in Dallas...

Dallas can waive Odom next year, they already opened some more space trading Rudy and Brewer and can amnesty Marion or Haywood, they can have about 25M in cap space… this is what is really scaring me right now, I believe they will be willing to take that pay cut to along side Dirk, that would be the best team in the league, you can’t make a better combo of Big Mens than Dirk-D12…
Even if they don’t take the paycut if we don’t put together a good team this year, we may lose DWill for the Mavs.

I’m not worried about the CURRENT state of the roster. You think BK is really going to just sit back passively while the current roster looks like this? He’s got multiple plans ready to go. He’d probably be laughing if he read some of the comments on this.
Dallas is a problem. When they got permission to talk to Dwights agent to work out a trade we all mocked them because they had absolutely nothing of value. So what was the point of trying to negotiate with Dwights people? Well as soon as Cuban had his time with D12’s agent, The Mavs have successfully moved so many players and cleared all that cap space for next year. What was said during that discussion? It certainly wasn’t “You don’t have any assets so we can’t work with you.”. Cuban left that meeting with the notion that he needed to clean house and have $20-25 million ready to go. I hate this bleak feeling I get in my stomach because of my loyalty to this team

lol, haters, from the Nets facebook page

Here is my random thought. Almost every article on NetsDaily.com has anywhere between 100-1000 comments. Why don’t some of those people come here to the Nets Facebook page and make comments.

in which someone replied

There are so many repeated comments. Nice thing about Nets 24/7 is that repeated posts get deleted. Once someone says it, it’s been said, no need to repost

by nets14 on Dec 13, 2011 8:04 PM EST reply actions

there are a ton of repeated comments though

due to people not reading, i would say at least 20% of the comments on these threads the last week have repeated thoughts, tweets, ideas, etc

Lakers are on verge of signing Josh McRoberts

Saw this on the ESPN NBA page under the rumors section. It had no contract details.

UPDATE: The Memphis Grizzlies made a run at Josh McRoberts through a sign-and-trade offer and a free-agent bid, but Indianapolis Star scribe Mike Wells reports that McBob is on the verge of signing with the Los Angeles Lakers.

While i understand how most of you feel

the silence isnt bad, as long as Nene is still a FA, and Dwight isnt traded. Nene is one of the top FA on the market (restricted or unrestricted), and he is still unsigned.

I have massive faith in our FO, they have not let us down! I love how BK is trying, but if Otis says no, no is the answer ;)

by danxcr on Dec 13, 2011 8:15 PM EST reply actions

still nothing huh.

though there’s plenty of more important things in life that’s of concern…

…the Nets silence and FA inactivity(Shelden?) sure as hell is annoying.

I like the Shelden pick-up.

Dan Fegan

Dwight and Nenes agent is on the phone with BK right now. NEne is going nowhere relax. Fegan wants both players here in NJ cause he sees whats about to happen with BK and the Russians deep pockets.

BK and Fegan got this. Either we get Nene and wait on Dwight or We get Dwight and still try and convince Nene to sign for a lil less.

Something will happen Fri.

Damion James and Marshon Brooks are going to be a 2-3 combo that will be feared in this league soon....

If (But I highly doubt it) we lose DWILL or we don’t get D12 it won’t matter…..These two players are going to be great together for years to come…..

better hope so

camp is open and we have graham and outlaw and shelden williams…i think i’m gonna puke. so depressing that i’m actually hoping we sign nene to the ridiculous contract of 16 mill per year
