Around SBN: Sixers Vs. Celtics: Countdown To Game Seven

When reporters asked Dwight Howard Sunday about whether the Magic had rejected any specific suggestions of his, he replied, "We had long talks, throughout the summer...very long talks. That's all I can say."

Unless those talks were prior to July 1, that would appear to be a violation of lockout rules which forbid any contact between teams and players or their agents. (Click headline for video.)

Have to appreciate the irony, this coming from a team that threatened to press tampering charges on two other teams.

Is it only the team that is punished (if it were to be proven true) or would Howard be looking at a fine/suspension as well?

by Accelerate on Dec 12, 2011 9:42 AM EST reply actions

Accusing us of tampering

And they go on to violate league lockout rules themselves, smh……… I wonder if dwight revealed this on purpose to spite orlando and land them a big fine for not trading him.

Have you not seen Otis Smith body of work?

Orlando would be foolish to keep Dwight and improve their record when they can (s)tank this season and get a high pick. Otis is dumb enough to do so.

yes, that's obvious, the best deals are always at he deadline...

… but there is a catch, we don’t know what they want, but if it’s cap space, they have to deal right him now…. And we can offer them tons of cap space, and the best young Center in the league to replace Howard.

Otis made the Big Baby and Richardson moves to convince Howard to stay, but now that he said he wants out, that moves are looking bad for some people saying that may obligate Otis trade for the present and get aluable players so they can continue in the playoffs. But the signings were solid, Otis hasn’t overpayed them, so he can trades them when he wants, and go for rebuilding right now. The Front Office may obligate Otis to rebuild, because they know even if they get Bynum and Gasol they are going nowhere and will be stuck with the giant Gasol contract. Orlando has been spending tons of money the past years and for nothing, I don’t think they will want to continue to spend big buckets knowing they are going nowhere, besides the playoffs… and they still have to pay Arenas giant contract.

When I saw the Lakers turning to Dwight I became scared and thought that Gasol, Bynum and Odom would be a great package for Dwight, but looking better, they already gived up one great asset in Odom, Gasol has a giant contract and is getting old, and Bynum is injury prone.

Lopez and tons of cap space are beter offer, right now, my fear is that Otis, screw us by not letting Howard goes where he wants, and because of the tampering against us.

Timing

When is our deadline for doing something? We gave Denver an ultimatum and then said ‘goodbye.’ If we drop out — ie, by picking up Nenet — it doesn’t help Otis.

Howard could come as a free agent and say that because Otis didn’t trade him in time (ie, by Jan 1) to get a great new deal with a new team, that Dwight is leaving as free agent and the Magic get nothing.

IF the Magic deal Dwight AFTER 12/31

WE are in great shape… Likely Dwight will sign with us a FA.. doesnt matter where Orlando sends him

Would the Lakers risk Bynum or Pau after 12/31 (when they would have no advantage to having him on the roster)? Would we risk Lopez?

basically, we have to wait out until 12/31.. miss out on Nene if we have to and see what happens

In some ways, it is to Orlando’s benefit to make us wait. We are their competitor.. If we skip Nene or other free agents and lose Dwight, it helps them..

by rundmc00 on Dec 12, 2011 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

Dynamics change in that case

I’m not sure what becomes the best financial decision for Howard.

1) Do you opt out & sign a 3 year deal with 4.5% raises to achieve bird rights quicker, and sign your next deal at age 29?
2) Do you opt out & sign a 4 year deal with 4.5% raises & sign your next deal at age 30?
3) Do you opt in to your final year & then sign a 5 year bird rights deal at age 27?

If he’s traded after 12/31, and he likes the team he’s on, I wouldn’t discount option #3 as a distinct possibility. It could prove to be the most lucrative, although it does carry the most risk.

by TheNetsFan on Dec 12, 2011 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

I think we're in great shape, even with the Lakers in the picture.

Even if they can keep Bynum, a front court of Bynum/Howard paired with an aging Kobe looks good on paper, but if Bynum goes down, they have nothing down low but Dwight. After 2 seasons of nothing but himself and Brandon Bass/Ryan Anderson, I highly doubt Dwight wants to go that route again, with or without Kobe.

I can’t stand to see this drag on and on. This is clearly Melo 2 hopefully with a better outcome.

To be clear, Dallas has NO cap space. Mavs are trying to those contracts - Fernandez and Brewer - off the roster.

THEY HAVE NOTHING TO TRADE! I think D12 mentioned them just to add another team to his list…

I rooting for the Clips to steal Paul

Sets the market lower for Howard. If NO fleeces a team then it will set Otis Smith’s expectations much higher and nothing will ever get done.

by Netted on Dec 12, 2011 10:46 AM EST reply actions

I don't understand why that's fleecing

1. That’s the standard rebuilding package. Possibly high draft pick, two young players with potential, and an expiring contract.

2. How many other teams can the Hornets deal with really that will give them what they want? CP3 isn’t willing to go anywhere, so that lowers the offers of other teams. GSW can’t give up Curry without getting a commitment from Paul

by muwu on Dec 12, 2011 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

I didn't comment on a specific trade

Just said I hope they get him for minimal assets otherwise it will be a long time until Howard is dealt.

by Netted on Dec 12, 2011 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

The only way Howard will lower the offer of ANY team is to tell them "I'm not signing an extension with you"

Until he does that with LA, they will remain in the running. They’re our only REAL competitor, since everyone else is just making offers, but none of them will actually progress in reality

by muwu on Dec 12, 2011 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

That is not a fleecing

you guys seriously need to take a look at the entire situation before calling that deal a fleecing

re: Sheridan's take on the Paul to Clippers trade

as I posted earlier:

Chris Sheridan is an idiot

That deal is perfect for New Orleans, they get young players, cap room, and with Minnesota’s pick they could possibly land a FRANCHISE PLAYER in this year’s draft

It figures that a buffoon like CS would try to sit here and brag about how Odom/Scola/Martin/Knicks worthless pick is a solid deal for a team that needs to be sold and rebuilt from scratch.

If you’re on the cusp of being a contender, then yes you take back Scola/Martin. If you’re on frickin life support, you’d want to clean house and start fresh, as any new owner would want to do.

With the Minny pick and their own, NO could rebuild very fast imo

by MrDollarBills on Dec 12, 2011 10:47 AM EST reply actions

Sam Mitchell said it the other day on NBATV

You either want to be great or bad, the Hornets would of been good with the Lakers Rockets trade but with no chance of ever improving.

The Hornets with this trade will no doubt about it be bad. But this gives a chance for the future. Like you said the Minny pick has a lot of value. Two top 10 picks on what looks to be a stacked draft. Sign me up if I’m a team like the Hornets who is on the verge of losing their franchise player.

Orlando will TRADE him SOON and here's why....

Cap space, besides getting good pieces back their #2 priority is getting rid of Hedo’s contract, they need to move Hedo with Dwight and teams will start using their remaining cap space to fill their rosters soon…..Does Orlando really want to go into the new season with a full blown “Melodrama”, answer is no, Stan is already getting tired of the Dwight questions….Do you think Orlando wants to have an unhappy Dwight on the team? He’s already taking shots at the team every chance he gets now…..They don’t want to have another Shaq. If Orlando plays hardball with him ne could play it right back. He could start eliminating teams off that list (hopefully it’s Dallas and LA) and do a Melo where it’s Nets or Nothing (meaning he would not sign an extension with anybody else that they would try to trade him to and walk at the end of the season leaving them with nothing)….

Now about Lopez, yes people are down on him but he is still one of the best young centers in the game and THEY do know it. I agree if LA offered Bynum AND Gasol we have no shot but I DO believe if it’s just Bynum against Lopex, Orlando will take the safer bet and the CAP RELIEF and go with our package (who knows what else BK has up his sleeves but I’m sure he’s working it)…KEEP THE FAITH!!!

Clips “have not, and will not” give up Gordon in a trade for Chris Paul, source says.
Another problem with CP3-Clippers scenario: LAC has, at best, a 2-year commitment from him. Those are a lot of assets to give up.

If Dwight wants this trade done right now, and if he really WANTS to come to NJ, he’ll eliminate LA from his list. Otherwise, he’s gonna have to wait months. Just choose ONE already, choose one and stick to it, and the deal will get done

Dwight's prolonging this by giving Orlando options

Take away their options, and make them focus on one team and one team alone. Choose ONE and get this done. It’s a dilemma, but give up one for the other, you can’t have both anyway. If you ultimately chose NJ, why even consider LA anymore? You’ve made your choice, now do everything you can to make it happen

by muwu on Dec 12, 2011 10:59 AM EST reply actions

Problem is that like with Melo...

the team does not have to trade you just yet…

Howard has to honor his contract and play along with Orlando just like Carmelo played along with Denver even though Denver knew Carmelo wanted the Knicks and only the Knicks…

We just have to hope that in the end that Orlando lets Howard get what he wants.

Orlando is dragging this out

They’re waiting for us to sign Nene, so that they can turn around & say that we can no longer reach a workable deal. I think they’re also hoping that Howard won’t give up the extra bird rights money. Remember how we argued the same thing about Denver all of last year...

Denver took Carmelo leaving personally just like Orlando is taking Howard leaving personally.

Denver was in a state of denial just like Orlando is. What makes no sense to us makes perfect sense to Orlando…They don’t want to lose Howard and will probably hold on to him as long as they can even if it means screwing themselves up in the process.

Remember too that Orlando hosts the All-Star game this year.

by M I K E on Dec 12, 2011 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

Why is Chris Broussard saying his source said the Clips don’t want word to get out that Gordon is in the deal, yet Broussard is making sure word gets out that Gordon is in the deal?! Isn’t that a contradiction? I guess the source has no fiduciary attachment to the Clippers. Also, it’s Y!‘s word vs. ESPN’s word now on this issue. Credibility at stake.

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility

Let's say Otis is being stupid after all, and he wants to drag this out ala-Melo despite the fact that he knows he only has 2 teams to negotiate with

If LA is supposedly not gonna offer Bynum and Gasol together… Do we go ahead and sign Nene and just sweeten the deal with more guys? If Lopez plays well this year, the perception that LA has the better package when we can’t take back Hedo could seriously change.

Though… if we surround Brook with good rebounders like JWill, Reggie Evans, or Shelden Williams, his rebounding may not improve. Though if Nene gets the most minutes, he’s not gonna steal any rebounds. But he might affect Brook’s scoring since Brook won’t be getting as many shots anymore

some twitter comment

UPDATE: Now that Howard has officially asked for a trade to the Nets — with the Lakers and Mavs looming as his other choices — it looks like Chicago will still engage in trying to trade for Howard — even if he hasn’t expressed a desire to play for the team.

by GrandKenyon6 on Dec 12, 2011 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

I'm awaiting for the Clippers to join the action...

Otis Smith said he would love offers from all 29 teams if he can get them…

It’s up to Howard to do what Melo did. Say no to any other offer…

If he does that we might have a chance to get him but if not, we better have a backup plan handy..

do you really think Dwight is going to say no to playing with Chris Paul in LA

that’s pretty much the exact same situation that we have here. Although that situation might be even better since it appears the Clippers will either have Gordon or that draft pick as well.

This is gonna sound weird -- because I've been strongly against signing anyone to a big contract for the last three months -- but...

I’m beginning to think it’s in the Nets’ best interest to sign Nene. If Otis isn’t going to deal Howard within the next two days then the Nets need to make a move. If Nene is willing to look into a Gasol and Bynum package (which we previously thought wasn’t the type of deal he was looking for) maybe he’ll be semi-interested in a Lopez and Nene deal.

It has a couple advantages: Lopez gets to boost his value (which he will surely do); Nene can show that he’s been somewhat relegated by the Nuggets’ system and lack of an effective passing point-guard.

However, the question remains, is Otis Smith willing to force Howard’s hand? In other words, would he hold him until the end of the year and then ask “where are you going to go?” We’ve never really seen a star player be held hostage by his own team, but it seems like it could happen in this instance. Does Smith have the balls to do that? He’s shown to have alternative methods of approach, in the past.

by Dopeness on Dec 12, 2011 11:27 AM EST reply actions

all true however a couple of things to keep in mind

- Unless traded by December 31st, Dwight won’t be able to get his 100 million $.
- By waiting for too long, the number of teams that can absorb Turk’s contract will dwindle/disappear.
- He has requested out and has said he has a bad relationship with Otis, it will get VERY nasty in Orlando.

by lupojohn3 on Dec 12, 2011 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Okay...

- Why does Smith care about Dwight’s $100 million? They obviously don’t have a great relationship.
- It doesn’t appear that he’s in a rush to get rid of Turkoglu’s contract; because the Nets don’t seem like they can provide him with that serve for much longer and he hasn’t jumped at the deal.
- We’ll see. I don’t know if Howard is the type to make it as ugly as it would get with a Kobe-esque player. Smith may value Howard so much that he’s willing to put up with the ugliness.

This is the part I don't get.

If you’re playing chicken it’s because you’re trying to get something more out of your opposition. Assuming that King is giving up Lopez and picks, as well as taking back Turkoglu’s contract, then the Nets don’t have anything else they can throw the Magic’s way.

What is he waiting on? It would seem that he’s either waiting on the Lakers to improve their package or looking at another potential suitor.

It's not always that you're playing chicken to get more value

It may be that Otis knows his job’s on the line, so he has to now look like the tough guy after all the moronic things his FO did and said. He knows he’ll eventually have to cave. I urge you to remember one thing: Fegan. He will pester Otis to trade Dwight now because of money. It’s funny how money is always brought up, except here.

Quick Cap Math that media ignores

After Amnestying Arenas and signing JRich plus the two trades Orlando will look to have roughly 40 Million in committed salary with taking on Lopez and DJames .

That gives them plenty of money to sign Nene Immediately if they like plus the ability to pick up one or 2 more nice pieces.

This is the most annoying part of people comparing our trade to a Lakers trade for example. It seems that no one is taking into account the flexibility that taking Turks contract off the books will give the. In the end it could end up being: Lopez, DJames, Nene, and 2 picks for Dwight. Better than a perma gimp headcase and an over his prime and highly compensated Gasol (I am a gasol fan by the way)

This is why I believe Nene is waiting around. not to go to the nets, but to go to Orlando when they free up all of that cap room.

No NJ4 for this reason

Magic want Pau and Bynum and the Lakers said no, so they have no other feasible way of getting Dwight.

is it a case of "want"?

or are they incapable. They had to construct a three team deal to get Paul, which was so complicated it fell apart…twice. Same money, same situation for Howard.

The Nets are their competition, not the Clippers.

If the Nets upgrade their offer of Lopez, 2 picks, taking Hedo, then the Lakers will have to think about upgrading their offer.

The way I see it Brook Lopez is the best single piece Orlando has been offered.

I wouldn’t trade Brook for Gasol and Bynum…Bynum always gets hurt and Gasol will be 32 years old in July…Plus Gasol and Bynum will be making 35 million dollars between them next year. Lopez 4 million…

Draft picks are hit and miss no matter how high they might be.

Brook Lopez is the only reason I still think the Nets have a good shot at getting Howard soon. Unless of course Orlando wants to screw us for starting this whole mess in their eyes…

by M I K E on Dec 12, 2011 11:49 AM EST reply actions

they wouldn't give him up for Melo either....

And Im sure if we offered Lopez for Bynum L.A would take him and run away with it.

Lopez’s value is at a all time low due to his 6rpg last season, but he is very talented and a better asset tan bynum

Well other people think differently

Brook’s rebounding has been etched in everyone’s mind. Everything you hear about him from people outside of Netsdaily is “Yeah, he’ a scorer, but that’s it”

Everyone sees him as one dimensional

Unfortunately he was last season… We all know he’s capable of more, but honestly how many people are watching 50+ Nets games a season? I think the knocks on Lopez are pretty universal.

Question

Since Brook is on his rookie contract and makes about 3mill per year, wouldn’t that be more appealing to the Magic than Bynum? Bynum makes around 15mill and WILL BECOME AN UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT IN ONE YEAR, while Lopez would become an RFA plus chances Brook wants to leave Orlando? ZERO
Chances Bynum wants to leave to a contender/big market team? much higher than Brook.

Just a thought.

you are correct and logical

Problem is.. Otis Smith is not logical at all. The only good contract he gave out was to Gortat. Problem is that is because he matched Dallas (I think) offer….

Then he astutely traded Gortat for one of the worst contracts in Hedo

Why would any star player want to go to that team? Once there Sterling will make sure those players are surrounded by vet min guys… whom he affectionately calls “slaves.”

And Paul better be careful. Some of his injuries may require out-of-network care and we know Sterling doesn’t like to spring for that.

Everyone said Uriji was stupid and had no idea what he was doing, and that they are delusional that they think Melo might stay.

Can we still risk not getting anyone and hanging it all on Dwight?

by faNETicS on Dec 12, 2011 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

It's very likely that Dwight will still want to go by the deadline, since the Magic aren't gonna get Monta ellis or Iggy

But I think we can’t risk not signing Nene anymore. We can still trade for him if ever, so it’s not a closed door even with Nene

IMO...

….looks like owners are finally taking a stand. As much as I want D12 on the Nets…it’s good for the league if Orlando takes this risk. Bron and Bosh didn’t give up too much cash signing with the Heat. But CP3, D12, and DWill risk giving up a big chunk of change if they do leave their current teams. I think the CP3 and D12 saga will be resolved at the trade deadline.

BK likely makes one more pitch to get it done now but if not….they’ll have to sign who they can and hope for the best at the trade deadline.

Dwight WILL stay in Orlando if they manage to swing a trade to get a significant player

Chances are they won’t, but even if they won’t, it hurts us.

We have to sign Nene now or King will risk losing Deron too if he stands pat and does nothing. We’ve already lost out on practically every free agent out there.

Signing Nene does not eliminate the possibility of a future Dwight trade, but it does eliminate our ability to trade Hedo.

The implications of Dwight giving Orlando hope of keeping him:
Instead of Lopez+2 picks for Dwight and Hedo against Bynum+whatever for Dwight, it becomes Lopez+2 picks for Dwight against Bynum+whatever for Dwight.

If Brook has an allstar year, then it’s all good, we have the better package. But if Bynum has a good year, you’re losing that trade war. The upside is, you’ll at least have Nene in the fold so you won’t totally suck. Downside is, you’ll still have some weak wing players and not a lot of flexibility or trade assets to improve

Dwight, Hedo, Jameer for Gasol & Bynum. Good or bad trade ?

Eddy/Magic Basketball: Good for the Lakers. Bad for the Magic. Bynum is a nice piece, injury aside, but that doesn’t really help Orlando rebuild properly.

So… what would make him think Dwight would go to LA? What else can they offer?

dude just said after Dwight, the next best centers in the league are Bynum, M. Gasol and Bogut, followed by Noah.

That's not a crazy thought

Lopez is in the same tier as Bynum, Gasol, Bogut, Nene, Noah & Horford. How you rank those guys in that tier is subjective. If someone values defense highly for a center, it’s easy to see why Lopez would be ranked behind those guys.

Magic Organization is doing the right thing

Dwight pushed for a trade hard…likely because of the January 1st deadline which would’ve allowed him to get 110 million from his new team.

Now that cooler heads have prevailed…I think D12 and Orlando came to an agreement. Magic have the next 3 months to find a miracle…a star player they can somehow trade for. If that don’t happen, they’ll trade Dwight to the team of his choice.

I truly believe this is the case. It’s fair for everyone involved.

by Jron on Dec 12, 2011 2:11 PM EST reply actions

Totally understand where you are coming from...

I understand that patience is a virtue. But orlando is stringing us along. And to be honest, so is Dwight. One mintue he is demanding a trade. The next, he really wants to be in Orlando. It is time to move one. If Dwight wants to be here, then he, Orlando and BK will find a way to make it happen, even if we sign Nene.

The Nets have a real chance to make the playoffs this year. And if you add Nene and a SF (RJ, AK), then the Nets could go as high as a 4-5 seed in the east. It’s time for the Nets to focus on the things they can control, and do away with the things they cannot…

And by the way… if Brook begins the season on a strong note, the magic will come calling to us…
