Tom Penn was the capologist with the Trail Blazers and is now ESPN's, offering analysis on big deals. Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel interviewed him on trade scenarios Sunday. Bottom line for Penn is if you can do a deal to dump Hedo Turkoglu's contract, do it now. As far as value, he likes Brook Lopez over Andrew Bynum.
Penn told Robbins one reason to do the deal now is that fewer and fewer teams will have enough cap space to take on Hedo Turkoglu's contract. "So the team that’s most willing to take on Hedo’s going to be the one that gets Dwight. That space could go away as the season begins," said Penn. "So if that’s part of the equation, they need to move a little bit quicker on finding a home for Hedo before all this cap-room space dries up."
As for Lopez and Bynum, Penn said one critical factor is Lopez's rookie contract. Another is Bynum's history of injuries. "The likelihood of having a stable, long-term center would be there with Brook."
