Earlier, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reported that Howard had twice requested a trade in meetings this week with GM Otis Smith. Smith, according to Robbins, said he would look at trade requests from all 29 teams and would not placate Howard.
Woj added that Howard has told Smith that he would be willing to sign a five-year, $109 million extension with the Nets this summer. "Howard has determined that he wants to be the centerpiece of the new Brooklyn arena, and pair up with All-Star guard Deron Williams when the Nets to move to New York next season," Woj noted.
Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports and the Post all confirmed the Woj report, as has NetsDaily. Ken Berger initially cautioned, "a person involved in Howard chase cautions not to count out Lakers yet", then later noted that "Nets will need third or fourth team to get Dwight, but source says 'will not be a problem'," adding that Billy King is the master of the multi-team trade. David Aldridge similarly argued, "NJ offer of Lopez/2 picks DOA. 3rd team imperative".
