Wait!! Before we amnesty Outlaw, would it make more sense...
So obviously during the lockout the media harped on what we all already knew: Travis Outlaw is one of the worst contracts in the league. And I see a lot of "Well now that the season will begin, Outlaw is gone". But rather than immediately amnesty-ing #21 ASAP, would it make more sense to hold onto him? Couldn't his contract be used as a way to balance out a trade to say, Orlando? In which case we might be expected to take back Arenas, who we could then use the amnesty on?

nobody wants his contract....so i don't see the value
i have this great fear that Outlaw is gonna have a monster season after the nets waive him…but that’s “highly” unlikely….cross my fingers…
Think about it
Whoever amnestys a player still has to pay him. So logic suggests that Orlando would rather amnesty and pay outlaw then amnesty and pay Arenas. In that scenerio they may decide to take on outlaw.
i see your point
If a team has two horrible contracts it can amnesty 1 trade the other and let that other team amnesty the other contract. A team w/o an obvious amnesty candidate can use that flexibility to their advantage. I don’t think we can b/c nobody will take on Outlaw anyway
amnesty cant be used on a player acquired via trade

If theres one player who MUST be amnestied, it’s Outlaw. I’d rather take Arenas or Turk cuz they produce(more than Outlaw, at least)
Outlaw was so bad
that he OWES the Nets money. He needs to get out if Poky wants a contender.
World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.

I definitely see him being used in a trade
I think the Nets are going to make a few trades once the CBA is complete and Outlaw will be involved. There are many advantages to the amnesty clause that can be used to make trades work better and in a teams favor. Allowing a team who isnt going to use their amnesty clause the opportunity to take on Outlaw and then clear even more room by using the amnesty clause on him once they get him in trade would be a favorable move.
It’s more likely that the Nets just use their amnesty on Outlaw but there are several options to look at before doing that. Who knows what can happen? No one saw the Deron Williams trade happening…. What ive learned about the new regime last season is that the obvious isnt necessarily going to happen. BK will definitely explore all avenues first.
again, amnesty cant be used on a player acquired via trade

Let's just say for insanity sake
We trade Outlaw & a future 1st Rd pick to a team with no obvious amnesty candidate, then in a separate deal acquire a great player AND a terrible contract from a team with several amnesty players, then subsequently waive the aforementioned excess amnesty player.
Aka we get Dwight Howard and Arenas in a blockbuster trade then amnesty Arenas

Not calling you a liar
But could you give a link or reference to that. Im sure your right, this is just the first im hearing about this. This has been discussed in the past and it was never a question. Is this something that just came out in the latest agreement on the new CBA?
Where in the new CBA does it say that?
I read the amnesty clause and article 14 states “only for contracts in place at the inception of the new CBA” that just means you can’t use it on people signed after 12/9/11

It's possible
Magic amnesty Arenas. Nets include a swap of Outlaw for Hedo in a Dwight trade to further entice the Magic. The Nets would be stuck with Hedo, yes, but if it means they get Deron to stay, they would do it. The Nets have a potential dynasty and the Magic completely clean house.
That being said, I think they just amnesty Outlaw and sign a couple free agents hoping the Magic would be interested in one of them later on in the season when they realize they aren’t contending and they have to trade Dwight.
Dwight, D-Will, and Hedo>Brook Lopez and another first round pick.

I think the document sent to the players earlier this month
Implied that you could do a trade and drop.
Was that changed in the final agreement?
Yes you can
Each team permitted to waive 1 player prior to any season of the CBA
(only for contracts in place at the inception of the CBA) and have 100% of
the player’s salary removed from team salary for Cap and Tax purposes.
A modified waiver process will be utilized for players waived pursuant to
the Amnesty rule, under which teams with Room under the Cap can
submit competing offers to assume some but not all of the player’s
remaining contract. If a player’s contract is claimed in this manner, the
remaining portion of the player’s salary will continue to be paid by the
team that waived him.
Then could $34.4 Mill cash help us get DH now?
Two trades with Orlando:
1. Outlaw for Arenas (We amnesty Arenas, which is $34.4 million cheaper then Outlaw)
2. Stuff for DH (maybe we can send less thanks to cash savings above)
If only the All Star game had been cancelled.
Give Outlaw A Chance?
I think we should give Outlaw a chance to right himself before we bite the bullet and holding onto the Amnesty for someone even worse than Outlaw who might come back in a trade might be better thought out.

We should hang on to Travis’s contract until we make enough good FA signings to be confident that we are above the minimum salary requirement without having to resort to another boat anchor signing. What sense would it make to dump Travis now only to be forced in the next few weeks to sign AK47 or Prince to a similar contract? These players are arguably better, but there is no argument that they are older and/or more injury-prone. Therefore their contracts, depending on the terms of course, would have similar value in getting a legit star—none. Then we wouldn’t have the flexibility that the amnesty clause allows us, so tying us to either of them or another marginal free agent is much worse than keeping Travis until we need his salary to make a truly significant move.
It is my understanding that we will many years to exercise the amnesty. Let’s not make things worse by using it prematurely. I am fine with adding either Prince or AK47 for a reasonable term and amount, but they’re not taking us to the promised land (Hump isn’t either BTW). The amnesty clause is a powerful strategic tool. Let’s not go all kooky on this board if it isn’t used right away.

In-season amnesties and waiver process
Just read the summary of the tentative deal and two interesting things came out of it. First, that the amnesty must be exercised prior to any season in the CBA, which I take to mean that players could not be amnestied during a season. So if we don’t amnesty Outlaw prior to this season, then we are stuck with him until after the season. Not as flexible as I hoped.
The second item is that there will be a process of bidding for players who have been amnestied among only teams who are under the cap. The details aren’t provided, but it would apparently prevent moves like Baron Davis going to the Heat or Lakers. We might be able to pick up some nice pieces in that pool (not B-Diddy).
Given this info, I think we are better off just dumping Travis unless someone bowls us over with an offer. We should be able to hit the minimum without taking any questionable long term contracts.

As much as I'd like to join the frenzy and say out with Outlaw
Delayed amnesty is an option for next year’s free agent class. He would be an expiring contract basically if we weren’t able to acquire 2 players of quality via free agency this year. That minimum salary floor at 85% becomes an issue in a market that is kind of barren. I understand trade options are there. King has many cards he can play including this delayed amnesty so that he doesn’t have to tie money up, better used next year.
Happy to see Billy King graduated in an accelerated "how to make a trade" class in just one night :)
The polls says different above
I guess many here don’t want to say what they really think lol

One thing to consider is if we do amnesty Outlaw now, that is $7million more we have to spend to get to the required minimum team salary. I want Outlaw gone just as much as the next guy, but I fear us replacing his contract with another overpaid player to make up the difference. We really need to be smart about how we spend our money and keep our options open. Sign and trade may be a better option than free agency for us.
