Lopez With Troops in Hawaii

USO

Brook Lopez is one of nine NBA players touring US military bases in Hawaii this week, playing pick up games and talking with wounded troops and servicemen's families.  The group, mostly young players, have been in Hawaii since Sunday and will return on Friday. The tour is sponsored by the USO.

"I signed up for this tour because I wanted to be able to come out andspend quality time with our military families," said the Nets' center. "I am glad I did as it has been a blast."

Two days into the tour, the group has dined with troops, visited a Wounded Warrior Center and toured a Stryker and Aviation Unit at Scofield Barracks. The group has also led a youth basketball clinic and played in a "Hoops for Troops" USO basketball game alongside servicemen.

Meanwhile, Anthony Morrow will participate in an Atlanta exhibition game on November 5. The game will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs. It's sponsored by Damien Wilkins.

Brook is so brave and patriotic to risk his life going to front lines of battle to entertain troops….

He chose to dedicate some of his time to individuals and families that have gone through tough experiences.

Still has nothing to do with taking a shot at him for spending time with affected families.

As for being MIA, he was working out with the team at P3, and then everyone parted ways for the offseason after that. Someone discovered a picture of him at a gym, but it’s probable that he’s been working out without there being coverage of his whereabouts. The team provided him with an offseason workout plan, so I trust that he was busy this summer.

I wasn't saying he did anything wrong

and our season ended in April…….its almost November. Where the F could he have been?

You didn’t say anything wrong, I’m referring to the original post in this series of replies.

And he could still have been working out even if there wasn’t video and photo coverage of him training. We don’t need to see it for it to be true.

Yea, but if he participated in a few games like the other NBA stars

it could be a bit encouraging for the fans and his teammates.

Good job to the Lopez bros and everyone else in attendance. This is more a PR move to the families involved.

by djeterfan on Oct 26, 2011 12:23 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Here's the point

Hawaii is where a lot of families stay while their loved one fight (and die) overseas. The USO tour is as much about the kids of soldiers and sailors as it is about the servicemen.

So the comments about his courage or lack of it is not just misplaced but cynical. He went there for the kids.

Perhaps some of you should try to think about what it’s like to live with the anxiety of not knowing how your kids are doing back home while you dodge bullets….and how every little bit helps even if it’s a visit from a goofy giant.

Good for Brook, this is a big move.

No matter what the motives or who asked him to do it, or if he heard about it and volunteered, there was no one forcing him to dedicate a chunk of his time to show some love for our troops and country.

He’s a basketball player, not a grunt, smfh, what did the dude way above want him to do?

It’s like a guy decided to volunteer to walk dogs at an animal shelter and some jerk comes in and says, big whoop what a loser, he should be bathing homeless people with a kitchen sponge in his dining room.
