Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

It's one thing for an ESPN 5-on-5 panel to argue Deron Williams is ranked too high in their review of the NBA's 500 top players, but suggesting new 76er owner Will Smith is a bigger and "more enticing" celebrity that Jay-Z? Please.

Two of the panel think Jay-Z is bigger (although one thinks the advantage is only temporary). The other three are convinced it's Smith's world and we just live in it.

Jay-Z has way more cred as a rapper,

but I’d say Will Smith is the bigger entity. Then again, Jay-Z is more “current,” but that would change as soon as Smith opens another summer blockbuster.

He very well may be

In the hip hop world, Jay-Z is bigger. When it comes to an overall entertainment world, Smith is far bigger. The guy has been a star in music, TV & movies. The guy has connection Jay-Z could only dream of.

I think Smith gets the advantage OVERALL

When jay-z gets $20mill to star in a movie by himself

Only then will this be even close. Jay-z is huge in his own world. Will smith is huge in the real world

Jay-Z could be the better rapper ...

But I like Will Smith better.
He can sing, and definitely can ACT.

Locked out.

Jigga has Beyonce. But...

Now there’s only so many Jay-Z tunes that make that argument valid. Still happy with him though, wouldn’t prefer Smith

Agree with the others

Will Smith (and his entire family) is taking over. We are only witnesses.

Toss up

Will is a a 76ers fan, actor, but he’s a scientologist
Jigga is a great rapper, but wasn’t a Nets fan until he bought in

Brooklyn will love Jay more than Philly will love Fresh Prince.

End of discussion.
And if you want more, Celebrity Net Worth (not sure how reliable this is) values Smith at 188 million and Carter at 450.

I think it's fine.

This would be a legitimate rap battle

If the Legendary Roots crew bought part of the 76ers. Black Thought puts jay-z (and most others) to shame when he’s on the mic

well yea

Personally many have always said that Jay-Z rose to fame with Afeni’s and Voletta’s boys dying early.

Will Smith came from rapping to one of the biggest stars in entertainment

He has been nominated for Oscars.

Though he is “hip pop” I can’t deny Will Smith crossover where many couldn’t.

So yea Will Smith

Good for them.

Will Smith nor Jay Z lase them up.

When they can contend with D Will & Dwight, then lets talk.

Strangely enough

Battlefield 3 has been using jay-z’s “99 problems” track for it’s recent tv spots. Yet not once during the lebron-a-thon did we hear will smiths “welcome to Miami”

by Chakroot on Oct 20, 2011 7:01 PM EDT reply actions

In terms of general popularity amongst people

Id say Will Smith is more popular. But look at this in the point of view of athletes. Its very rare an athlete would be more excited to meet Will then Jay. Hip hop is huge amongst bball players so in terms of Nets vs Sixers I’d give Jay the advantage.

Another connection that I haven’t seen brought up is that Willow Smith is signed to Rock Nation (Jay’s label)

by djeterfan on Oct 20, 2011 7:11 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

BBall players don't watch movies?

You don’t think half the league probably grew up watch Fresh Prince?

by TheNetsFan on Oct 20, 2011 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not saying they dont

But ask an athlete who they’d rather meet and imo it’ll be Jay more than Will. I remember that was one of the first things Marshon tweeted when he was drafted.

by djeterfan on Oct 20, 2011 7:53 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Meet is one thing

Work closely with is another. I would think there’s a better chance Smith can get actors cameos on TV than Jay-Z can get them music deals.

I noticed some renovation work on one of jay-z's clubs/bars

Looks like they’re framing out some sort of screened-in porch… I yielded only laughter when I claimed to co-workers “they just be building a giant Nets billboard”

Can't be

The league will only cancel in 2 week blocks until less than half a season can be salvaged.

by TheNetsFan on Oct 20, 2011 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

They aren't canceling any other games right now..

breaking the meeting early seems like a threat to get players back in the room asap with a more compromising mindset

Will Smith is much bigger.

JayZ is well known in the US and English speaking countries, but other than that most people would say who?! when you ask them if they know who JayZ is.

Will Smith in the other hand is a global star. Independence day, bad boys and many other great movies will do that for you.

You're missing the point...

You’d have to go back 10+ years to find the last time Will Smith was relevant. Today Jay-Z has more pull than Smith and it’s not even close both domestically AND abroad.

by NetsForce on Oct 21, 2011 3:11 AM EDT reply actions

10 years is a drastic overstatement

He took a few years off recently, but he was coming out with a couple movies per year through 2008.

Not even close

Will Smith is a star in multiple mediums and crosses all racial borders.

Fact is Jay Z is still a rapper with hip-hop focused endeavors which narrows his appeal a bit.

Basically, there are Will Smith fans who’ve never heard Will Smith’s music. There aren’t any Jay Z fans who’ve never heard his music.

That was funny

Even though I have lost all connection to the hiphop scene,

due to the lack of quality work and creative lyrics, this debate is ridiculous.

Will Smith is NO longer a rapper. He is a Movie star.

JayZ is the current Hip Hop Icon.

Will Smith is a Global Movie Star.
JayZ is a GLOBAL Hip Hop Artist.

Whoever thinks that Jay-Z is NOT a Global STAR has his head stuck in a hole.

As for Basketball, I would rather have Jay-Z on my side then Will. First off, Jay-Z is more relevant to the youth (New Fans – One if not the Main target market for the Barclay Center) then Will Smith is right now. Second, Jay-Z is a true Hustler and Business Man. Will Smith demands $10-20 mill for a movie, but Jay-Z has his name branded with so many things that potentially makes him more.
