Lopez To Hawaii For USO Tour
Brook Lopez and his brother Robin are among a group of NBA players headed to Hawaii next week for a four-stop USO tour to lift the spirits of troops and their families. The players won't engage in organized games, but instead run clinics, go one-on-one with servicemen and women, sign autographs and pose for pictures.
In addition to the Lopez twins, the group includes MVP Derrick Rose, Joe Johnson, Al Horford, D.J. Augustin, Tyreke Evans, JaVale McGee and Mike Miller. The players will make four stops in the islands over the five day tour.

my prediction on what Stern says after the meeting;
“the mediator helped us a little, we are a little closer in some issues, but still miles apart”
Then Fisher comes and says
“There was no progress, we are a gulf apart, we as players stand united”.
Who cares about all that ...

O.T. but.. via Ken Berger on Twitter:
Seriously, ithought a lot about #NBA’s quest for competitive balance and “talent sharing,” which Stern articulated well last week. But … Look at ESPN’s player rankings and tell me who’s building a championship team around players 14-30. Not enough superstars to go around.
Thoughts? I have to agree with Ken. But all it proves is that the league needs a way for superstars to get paid more and more years if they stay with their original team. The owners also need a way they can cut their players and not be forced to pay the entire contract for the entire length of the deal. Sure, they screwed up (the huge Arenas contract for instance) but are you going to let a team be sunk because of a bad contract? That’s bad business.
Also, as much as I hate to say this (because I want it to happen), having #2 and #9 (D12 and Dwill) on the same team is just as bad for the sport as having #1 and #3 on the same team (James and Wade). It’s why we need the above rules, to prevent it from happening unless the players are really willing to leave a LOT of money on the table.
Agree
As much as i would hate it to happen i have to addmit that Sterns formula sounds good if you look at NFL where Packers THE SMALLEST market team is best team in the league by far.
by Aidar Berlinbayev on Oct 18, 2011 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions
If owners will win
Nets still have an option in getting both D12 and DWill but rotation players will have to take a pay cut to play along those 2
by Aidar Berlinbayev on Oct 18, 2011 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions
in theory Stern's formula is good..
but isn’t what makes the NBA distinct from the NFL is that the NBA is known for just a few popular teams? will the general public care if the Memphis Grizzlies win a championship in the NBA? it’s not as big an American sport as football, where a team like the Colts can get away with winning a title.
that can be changed if teams like NO and Mem will be competative
Those banwagon fans come and go simple fact they want to cheer for a team that win game;’s. Imagin if Bucks start winnig all of the sudden belive they would have a fan base and TNT will be talking about how good thay are etc. Like i said if team is competative fan base will come along IT"S ALL ABOUT WINNING.
by Aidar Berlinbayev on Oct 18, 2011 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions
In theory, Aidar. Except look at where you are: NetsDaily.
Jason Kidd took the Nets to two straight Eastern Conference Finals while playing the most exciting brand of basketball you could find anywhere on the planet. The building was empty.
Basketball is a super-star based sport. Parity is an impossible thing to create in basketball, but what you can prevent is superstars leaving their teams to join up with each other. It makes sense having one super star on each team, but there aren’t even enough to cover HALF of the franchises.
you have point but you missing the fact that NY has more teams than any over city.
Belive me NJ is a bad location if you a asketball fan, my’self been in a Nets game’s twice only even thogh i loved team for over 10 years. With new arena in BK belive me that will change in a sec, simple fact those same tourist that visit city would never go to NJ but they can take a tour to BK and if there’s a game there’s a good chance they will by a ticket. I’m not going to lie me and my Pop’s been one’s in NBA game guess where THE GARDEN why? because he didnt want to go to Jersey it simple as that.

Well thats different
NYC, which is the 5 borough makes up most of NY sports teams. But thats because NY state is so freaking small. I love NYC, born and raised, but NYC is only for those about the $$$$. After we make our living most of us leave.
"Most people on this board are like a broken clock, Only right two times a day"
Don't blame me Cali is so huge
so its understandable why they have so many teams and why they are also so far apart. Plus it is no picknick to get from NY to NJ for those Jets and Giants game, but thats besides the point.
"Most people on this board are like a broken clock, Only right two times a day"
california way better sports market
lakers, clippers, warriors, kings, chargers, raiders, 49ers, angels, dodgers, giants, athletics, ducks, kings, sharks, two MLS teams i believe, and AFL team and UFL team.
and colleges. new jersey/new york has cuse, rutgers, seton hall, st johns, buffalo, and then smaller schools like rider.
cali has a way higher market: SC, Cal, ucla, sdsu, stanford, fresno state, sjsu, and then basketball they got santa clara, st marys, and san diego, baseball, no one watches but they have some of the top baseball programs

"Most people on this board are like a broken clock, Only right two times a day"
That's why max contracts are a problem, not a solution
In theory, the most balanced league would be almost like a snake draft, i.e. team with the best player pairs him with the 60th best player, while a team with the 30th best player pairs him with the 31st best player, etc.
Max contracts prevent that from happening. If there were no max contracts, guys like James, Howard, Wade, Kobe, etc. would all be getting in excess of $30mil per year (some probably significantly more. If you had a cap, but no max salaries, then teams couldn’t fit 2 or 3 stars under a cap. You’d be forced to strategize (do I want Lebron & bunch of scrubs like the Cavs had or a deeper team like the Pistons had).
Simple
Players lose checks, they will eventually go broke.
Owners lose having to pay checks, they will remain billionaires but even more wealthy.
Players have to cave.

"Most people on this board are like a broken clock, Only right two times a day"
I read it
but whoever wrote it seems to be an idiot. His main arguement is that Smith won’t trade Howard and thats it. But the great writer does mention players that I think could be used in a trade for Howard. Deng, Noah, and even Boozer are good pieces plus draft picks and any other player the Magics would want.

Not great, but there not good?
Those 3 players are better than our whole team minus Lopez and Williams.
"Most people on this board are like a broken clock, Only right two times a day"
They aren't good trade pieces outside Noah and he's not even that good.
Deng was considered one of the worst contracts in the league since he inked the deal and now suddenly people want to slurp him and say he’s a solid trade piece cause his team did good.
Boozer is a good player and an OK signing for Chicago, but he’s not a valuable trade chip and completely undesirable for Orlando and not bringing back much of anything in a 3 way deal.
by vincecarter4pres on Oct 18, 2011 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly
Trading for boozer or deng would just put them in mediocre 35 win territory for the next few years.

They get paid a lot
Orlando could slip Arenas and maybe even Turk in that deal. Plus their contracts aren’t bad, not untradable
Something very very interesting
I found this nugget on pro basketball talks website,
“Kauffman said he has noticed an increase in calls from NBA teams in recent days, looking to "expedite" contract talks with assistant coaches. Kauffman sees it as an indication owners believe something big is about to happen.
"The only thing that can prevent an agreement from being reached are egos and stubbornness," Kauffman said. "With the BRI (basketball-related income), they both know within a point or so where the other guy is. System issues are things that can be mediated by an excellent arbitrator from looking at past CBAs and the current economy. [Agent] David Falk said he could solve this in one hour. For the first time in my life, I agree with him that it’s solvable."

This is GOOD News for Nets fans that they are talking about the multitude of issues besides the top 2 issues.
Ric Bucher says there are 25 interdependent issues.
If they are talking about 23/25 issues that would be very helpful, as some of those issues would level the playing field so that Miami, LA, NY, Chicago, Dallas, Memphis would have a tougher time to get better.
Is the MLE an important issue?
Is the Amnesty clause important?
Is the ability to go above the Cap by re-signing more than 1 of a team’s own players important?

The players haven't lost a pay check. Why would anyone want to believe they are close to an agreement?
Just the fact that they may have talked about many, many important issues is Progress.
Once they get “close” on about 20 or so issues, then the owners may actually give in to a 51.5% split, in favor of the players,
as long as the players go along with the other issues. Several more weeks to get to that point.

Seriously?
Is there any way this meeting went so long today and in the end they say they accomplished nothing?
I hope they come out and say they’re on pace to resolving their issues within a week or two.
If they say “there is still a gulf”, then wtf was going on the last 13 hours?
mediator must be tired...
I don’t see how he can’t not be. Maybe he wants to make them wait till one side physically tires out

Chris Sheridan: Fifteen and a half hours. If they come out of there talking about “concepts” and “ideas,” I will relieve @Ken Berger of shoe-throwing duties

14 and a half, someone's math is suspect and I only point that out because Sheridan is a lunch pail of epic proportions.

Marshon Brooks..
Tweets way to much, whats the deal with that? And would just like to add in that i think this 15+ hour long mediation with this greg cohen guy can’t make it any worse, still have hope, but yes i would be extremely pissed off if they come out and said something stupid like “we went over some system issues, blah blah blah, but still far apart” or something to that effect
Progress progress progress progress.

Good to see he's getting involved
Brookman and Robin make a pretty good cheer-up duo, I’ll give them that much. And once again I express my fear of losing the only player that has the potential to be one of the first retired jerseys in the Barclays Center. Don’t know why but every time I see his name, Dwight Howard just pops into my head and yells “HE GOIN’ TO ORLANDO BABYYY!”, and away goes my sleep.

So now Rod Thorn has pushed out form Nets GM, Ed Stefanski, as GM of Sixers:
According to Kate Fagan of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the new Sixers ownership group announced Tuesday that GM Ed Stefanski will no longer be with the organization.
LOL, agenda time.
Ed has been interviewing to take over as GM of the Raptors.

Ric Bucher in an interview yesterday said that the underlying issue of disagreement is the ability of players to have freedom to go where they want to (ala Miami example last year).
Players don’t want to give on that. Owners don’t want to see another LeBron/Bosh/Wade event to ever happen in the new CBA.
I hated the way the Decision went down, but it would terrible if they kill free agency with underlying racist aspects and implications.
Under a current CBA, players are more or less locked into a team for 9 years and as many as 10, after that they’re free to go anywhere they want with no real ability for their former team to retain them and honestly there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
It’s not like guys are bouncing after 4 seasons of rookie scale.
As greedy and unreasonable as the players are being, the owners are beginning to look like they think the players are pieces of property.
