Deadlines and Commitments - XL

The Calendar of Dread has now replaced the NBA Schedule as the defining timeline for Nets fans. With David Stern promising cancellations at two-week intervals and little hope for a quick solution, opening night of the Nets' last season in New  Jersey keeps slipping further and further into the distance.

So, we try to stay on top of news from the three Nets under contract overseas as well as their draft choices, including Bojan Bogdanovic's Turkish exploits. We're also tracking the Springfield Armor. (And no, that "XL" in the headline doesn't mean "extra large". It's the roman numeral for 40, marking the 40th week we've done this.)

Star-divide

October 16 - Opening weekend of the Israeli and Turkish leagues. Jordan Farmar's Maccabi Tel Aviv plays Gilboa/Galil Elion in Tel Aviv. Deron Williams' Besikas plays Banda Red in Istanbul.

October 20 - Euroleague opens this weekend. Farmar plays for Maccabi Tel Aviv vs. Armani Milano of Italy; Bogdanovic plays for Fenerbache vs. Caja Laboral of Spain. Sasha Vujacic plays for Efes Anadolu vs. Partizan.

October 22 - Opening night for B.C. Armia of Georgia in the Georgian Superleague. Sundiata Gaines plays in organized game for the first time since his hip fracture in mid-March

October 22-23 - Local tryouts for Springfield Armor, at Springfield College.

October 31 - Deadline for returning D-League players to inform their team whether they want to come back. Armor/Nets waiting on 14 players, most prominently Scottie Reynolds.

November 3 - D-League Draft (which is done by conference call). Armor have no first round pick, having traded it last year for Scottie Reynolds. They pick at #17, the first pick in the second round.

November 5 - Bogdanovic's Fenerbahce meets D-Will's Besiktas in Turkish League game.

November 8 - Besiktas (Williams) and B.C. Armia of Georgia (Gaines) open their EuroChallenge seasons, Besiktas against Leiden of the Netherlands and Armia against Gottingen of Germany.

November 15 - First missed paycheck for most NBA players. Most players are paid bi-weekly and their contracts run basically on the same schedule as the season.  Some players get paid in a lump sum, others on an annual basis, meaning their last paycheck with July 1.

November 15 - Nets point guards go up against each other in EuroChallenge match. Williams' Besiktas hosts Gaines' B.C. Armia in Istanbul.

November 16 - Earliest possible Opening Night for the Nets vs Thunder in Oklahoma City. Nets would play eight of their first 11 games on the road.

November 21 - Earliest possible home opener at Prudential Center vs. the Warriors.

November 25 - Springfield Armor Opening Night. Armor vs. Maine Red Claws in Springfield.

December 19 - Last day of Fall Semester for undergraduate courses at Providence College. MarShon Brooks completes his degree requirements.

December 30 - Efes Anadolu plays Besiktas in the Turkish League. Vujacic vs. D-Will...if the lockout is still on.

January 7 - If no agreement by this date, expect the entire 2011-12 season will be canceled.

*Whenever the Nets open their season, they have to decide by the night before whether to extend Stephen Graham's contract, at the veteran's minimum.

I mean “now that the season is pushed back”

appears to be so

and the Nets also have two “home” games in London.

"It's as sweet as it ever was, I'll tell you. Now, hopefully, we started something and we can win some more championships, but we're going to enjoy this one right now. Have a little champagne." --Julius Erving, May 12, 1976, ABA champion Nets locker room.

How did it work in 1999?

Did they make a whole new schedule in order to play a 50 game season?

by jerry25 on Oct 16, 2011 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Kerber recently reported

the league has contingency schedules for 75, 60 & 50-game seasons.

by Andres B on Oct 16, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

It has been reported that if there is no deal by January 7

the season will be canceled in its entirety.

In 1999, Stern set a January 6 deadline which led to a deal and a 50 game season. There will be no 41 game season.

I hope Stern keeps to those threats to keep the players worried.

However, the reality is that the owners want a partial season, that includes full playoffs, as much as the players do.

A N=1 sample size is not a good representation of history. Maybe You are the Seer, and I am the one keeping options open for a 41 game season if they were close to an agreement in early January.

Another reason to have some sort of season, is that it would get really messy if they don’t have a free agency and a trade deadline before the next draft.

Stern and company have been saying a lot of things in the past months that they knew wasn't going to happen.

Like he was saying there would be a Hard Cap and only partially guaranteed contracts. He has given in on both, letting the players feel that they won something.

Stern knows how to bargain by setting the goal posts further away from where he expects them to end up.

unless the lockout ends, yes

that is what his agent has told us.

He is working out with PC players at the PC gym.

The lockout should end just around the time Brooks needs to take his finals.

Since from the time of the “handshake” agreement to the first preseason game should be enough time interval to finish the semester. I doubt he would miss the first regular season game if his semester is over before Christmas.

It's good to know we have a seer on the board.

I would like to take credit, but it has been the widespread view of the sports commentators that starting the season by Christmas would be ideal for the owners, as long as they get their concessions from the players.

But my most recent seer that seems to be coming true, is that Proky is putting off politics until a future day (when Putin is out of power). It the meantime he is saving his face, and doing a good job of it.
Proky will be fine. This is good news for Nets fans that he didn’t get deep into politics.

Morrow indicated his willingness to play in Turkey with DWill:

In a reply tweet, early this morning from Morrow:

Anthony Morrow
RT @jerry25a: @BlackBoiPachino @DeronWilliams Everyone would be happy if U could join DWill in Turkey as they R looking for a SG.

Maybe DWill needs a shooting guard he can count on, to get his assists up.

Deadlines and Commitments post lockout

Trade for Josh Smith because he’s better than the available top free agents point blank!

by boogeewon on Oct 16, 2011 11:24 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I hope Hump's marriage can last long enough to get him re-signed.

In latest US Weekly (10/24 edition, pg. 52-54) they continue to blast Hump for trying to be funny in interviews and for not letting Kim control him.

They imply that if he can’t follow the script on how to act, and if Kim can’t fully control him, then their marriage is doomed.

Which if partially true confirms my belief that Kim really wants to live in NYC and Hump was already happy to be a Net.
The part about Kim moving where ever Kris goes to play is nothing but BS.

Also, more reason for Khloe and Hump to dislike each other. Hump, in response to insulting remarks from Khloe has an “insider” saying

“He has made a lot of comments questioning the validity of her marriage to Lamar Odom. She feels she needs to take him to task for his bulls—t.”.
Meanwhile Kourney also isn’t a fan “She thinks Kris is an ass”.

Grizzlies destination for Dwight?

Grizz can offer a package of Gasol, Gay and Mayo for Howard.

Magic trade him out the conference and get quality players back.

Question is would Howard agree to play there?

I think he would prefer BK but you never know.

by power_njerz on Oct 16, 2011 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

Why would he want to play in Memphis?

If they trade Gay, Gasol and Mayo, they have no supporting cast, same as the magic, and he is in a
small market with a team that doesnt have money.

by nets14 on Oct 16, 2011 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually they would have a nice supporting cast for Dwight...

Howard would replace Gasol… so that’s an upgrade; Gay was on the sidelines the entire time Memphis went on their playoff run- so they won’t miss him; and they have a young outside shooter in xavier henry that can take the place of mayo. But one thing I will agree with what you said: Howard is not going to want to go to a small market team. So this trade is not happening…

by aug93 on Oct 16, 2011 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

So losing Gay makes no difference?

What guarantee is their that Henry can replace Mayo? What if Battier leaves?

by nets14 on Oct 16, 2011 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

As long as Howard has the right to refuse to sign an extension with his new team ...

then he can dictate where to go, although the new CBA May make staying in Orlando more likely.

And I think that an aging Kobe would not be as appealing as playing with DWill and Morrow in Brooklyn.
As long as LA would have to give up say Odom + Gasol, then LA would not be so attractive.

by jerry25 on Oct 16, 2011 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually they will be playing in Memphis

He's not going to Memphis

I still think the hierarchy is LA, Orlando then NJ/BK

D-Will > Carmela

by Gdepp94 on Oct 16, 2011 1:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

How does he get to LA?

they have the biggest contracts in the league.

I see no indication he wants to stay in Orlando.

I think he said something like how he wants to make Orlando a big market.

Not happening. Brooklyn’s right over here, Dwight.

I think it's fine.

Odom and Gasol or Gasol and Bynum and Picks

One of those combos might be enough to get it done. I truly don’t believe Otis Smith will allow the SECOND franchise center in Magic history to walk 16 years after the first one did.

D-Will > Carmela

by Gdepp94 on Oct 16, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I can recall the only superstar to be traded within the conference was Vince Carter. Everyone else is shipped to the opposing. Gm’s dont want to see their former star 4times a yr.

by power_njerz on Oct 16, 2011 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Except for Hill all these players were past their primes. Otis Smith is going to try his best to get Dwight out the conference.

by power_njerz on Oct 16, 2011 4:38 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree he'd rather sent him out West if he had to trade him

but I also think the last thing he wants to do is to giftwrap the Lakers another franchise center.

by Andres B on Oct 16, 2011 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

This is true. However, is Orlando going to want what LA has to offer over what the Nets have to offer?

Bynum cannot stay healthy. Odom and Gasol are both over 30. However, the nets have an up and coming center in lopez that is even younger than Howard. Lopez alone is far more appealing than any of the 3 big men LA has to offer. If orlando were to trade Howard, I think their first preference would be the nets…

Giants

At least my Giants won today. Now I hope my Jets win tomorrow night. Let’s hope that George Cohen does a good job mediating between the player’s union and the owners. I believe we will have regular season BB on December 1st. I also believe in the “tooth fairy”, since I saw him in the Gay Pride parade three years ago.
