Stick with the NETS!

Why all this talk about changing the name of such a historical franchise? The Nets are one of the few remaining names from the ABA in which the Nets were one of, if not, the best teams in league history. Imagine how meaningless the old videos of Dr J will be if the Nets name no longer exists. Do you ever see an Erving Virginia Squire jersey be worn by any kids at at arena? When you think of George Gervin, do you think of the Squires or the Spurs? Of course you don't think of the squires because the name was changed to the Washington Capitals, then the Oaklands Oaks, all FORGETTABLE! Don't do that to the Nets! Changing the name will not change the franchise, winning does that, remember when Kidd changed the Nets almost overnight? Instead, changing the name will serve to somehow alienate those fans that have struggled through years of being a Nets fan. I have been a fan since my first game back in 1979 when I watched Eddie Jordan and Mike Newlin lead the Nets to a win over the Chicago Bulls at the RAC.  It's sad enough my team is leaving my state, but to leave my state and change their name; what is my connection to the team? Devin Harris? I love Devin but to be honest how can my connection be a guy who has all his jerseys marked down 30% at his own arena? If I have to like a new team in a new town, it might make it easy to join the masses and switch to the Knicks. I can't say that I will really ever make that switch, but for some, that seems like a real easy transition. If you've ever been to a Nets Knicks game in Jersey, you know what I mean. As far as marketing a new name and the associated revenues...I am certainly not an expert in that area but I would imagine that adding "Brooklyn" to the Nets would generate huge revenue amounts that would extend nationwide due to all of the transplanted and proud Brooklynites and New Yorkers. A new name would take time to catch on outside of Brooklyn, don't ya think? And what do I do with my current Nets wear? Use it to wash my car? Also, gone goes the history of a connection to former Nets greats like Bob Elliot, Edgar Jones, Winford Boynes, Dwayne Schintzius, Ed O'Bannon, Dennis Hopson, Kevin McKenna and Dwayne Washington. Ok maybe not great, but seriously, Drazen wore a Nets uniform, Dr J wore a Nets uniform, Jason Kidd wore a Nets uniform and Buck Williams wore a Nets uniform. Let's not lose those connections. The Nets name, in itself, is a classy and historical name for a basketball team. Concentrate on the development of the team and the image will follow, not the reverse order.
