Is This Morrow's Year?

Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld lays out which off-season acquisitions are most  likely to succeed in a variety of ways and predicts that Anthony Morrow is the off-season acquisition most likely to have a breakout season.

"With a starting role all but won and a clearly defined role in place," Kennedy writes, "Morrow has been expanding his game and could emerge as more than just a sharpshooter in New Jersey."

The other big reason for his selection, says Kennedy, is that Morrow will be free of a rotation that had his role changing constantly and his minutes up and down throughout the season.

So true. But if you ask Warrior fans, they say Dorrell Wright has more potential. I think they are just in denial

by i says on Sep 5, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL. im not buying it either. Morrows shooting ability is the most lethal weapon in basketball. he can easily be developed into a solid starter

by i says on Sep 5, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

    a few reasons

    1. as noted, the Nets knew the Warriors had targeted Dorrel Wright.

    2. the Warriors were in the final weeks of an ownership transfer and things were in flux, especially re finances.

    3. The Nets offer was front-loaded, meaning it would be configured in such a way that the Warriors would have had to lay out a lot of cash on signing. See #2.

I understand why we got him away from Golden State, I’m more surprised that no other team gave him an offer of similar/better money

by J-Kay on Sep 5, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

And hadn't the Warriors just committed big money to David Lee and were in cash savings mode, but feeling good about Lee and Wright and Reggie Williams?

Nets moved early on in free agency and usually the restricted FAs go a little later on.
Other teams were still targeting bigger names, but Nets were targeting Morrow and Outlaw, who Avery liked and also Thorn didn’t have much more time left as a Net.

In the end, when Nets offered a 2 million trade exception, it became a S&T and Warriors felt they were at least getting something in return:
    http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_15499415?nclick_check=1

Also note that at that time, July 12, Dave D. was also writing (at bottom), that Nets would be pursuing a deal to get a PF by trading TWill + draft picks (fortunately Dave D. was wrong and Tyrus T / Scola didn’t work out). Nets still have TWill and those draft picks but still have their RoboCop PF.:

How is this guy going to have a breakout season?

playing behind Harris and Possibly T-Will and Farmar what if everyone stays healthy
Harris (Could return to All-Star play and play some 2 36mpg sounds good)
Farmar (good backup could have a breakout season and play some 2 18mpg sounds good)
T-Will(good combo guard could have a breakout season 28mpg sounds good)
Morrow (2 that shoots lights out how many minutes would he get)
Could Williams or Morrow show full potential playing on the same team and getting limited minutes.

by JJ25 on Sep 5, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

    good kind of problem

4 players who collectively deserve more minutes than available. If Morrow DOES have a breakout season, somebody(s) will be expendable. If Terrance Williams continues to play like he did in April, Devin Harris returns to all-star form, and Farmar produces up to his confidence level………… trade bait galore!

A 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 in mid-season for a proven star (Melo or whoever) could upgrade the team to solid playoff quality.

by Oligarch on Sep 5, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

There could be two ways to invision it as good or bad

i say bad because if he doesn’t get the minutes how will he have abreakout season if Morrow plays more minutes how will we know what T-Will has to offer, Farmar could have a breakout season but what if he doesn’t get minutes and Harris is going to get the most minutes because he is the only ALL-Star on this team it’s going to be so inconsistent on the minutes they get- one day someone plays 12 minutes then the next game he plays 28 then he plays 20 and could lower trade value instead of gaining value. I say trade for Anthony now and let Morrow Develope let Farmar backup 1 and 2 Let Outlaw Backup 3 and 4 and Let Petro backup the 5. And let Favors develope playing alongside Harris, Lopez, and Anthony from day 1 is a confidense builder for Favors he is going to get open shots.
    Lopez/Petro
    Favors/Outlaw/Hump
    Anthony/Outlaw
    Morrow/Farmar/Ross
    Harris/Farmar
    Thats a solid team.

Hope so, then the trade of Lee is even better! BUT I question something else in the article: most famous. Amare will be famous b/c he plays in MSG. What is this prejudice that MSG is some kind of mecca? Yankee stadium is, but MSG? What famous player played there:Wilt, Kareem, Russell, Bird, Magic, MJ, Kobe, Lebron etc. Every major player has NOT been in NY. Even our most famous: Patrick, was overshadowed by Hakeem, the dream, David, the admiral, Robinson, MJ, of course, and so on and so on. Okay, maybe Clyde was the most famous, but he brought that style with him. And other flamboyant players thrived outside of NY. Amare is not that. He is not Ewing, the warrior, not is he Clyde for style. He is a superstar who has knees and eyes in question – but the biggest question is NO NASH. I will be impressed if he is a top player with the players they have. I just wonder, when people will stop thinking MSG is so famous b/c of basketball – boxing, yes, but basketball?

The key line in paragraph about Morrow is "with starting role all but won". The less in tuned ESPN writers like Hollinger, have TWill starting.

I agree that Avery is set on starting Morrow over TWill, but that will be good, because TWill will have a broader role, getting minutes at at PG and SF as well as when there are injuries at the 1, 2 or 3 position.

by jerry25 on Sep 5, 2010 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

    all but won?

that is a ridiculous statement from Kennedy. I mean, TC hasn’t even started, LOL. Williams should and will start, IMO. We need defense and playmaking next to Devin in the backcourt, and we have enough shooting in the starting line up with Outlaw and Murpy at the forwards.

by Andres B on Sep 5, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Twills diversity makes him more fitted for a starting role whereas Morrow is needed more for playing net to farmar and being a spark off the bench

by i says on Sep 5, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

TWill seems to enjoy the assignment of leading the entire team, from the 2nd unit.

It was felt that last year TWill and Harris didn’t play well together.

Avery had already said that he would see how CLee and Harris play together, and would play Morrow with Harris if it worked out better. With Lee gone, it is reasonable to assume that Avery will see how Morrow and Harris play together.

Of Course Avery isn’t going to be stupid. Which ever combination works out best, he will go with. Nothing is set it stone now.

However, I like the idea of TWill averaging 25+ mpg, and being free to lead the 2nd unit. That will be fun to watch, just like Summer League.

Of Course Avery is expecting TWill to improve on defense and shooting form.

by jerry25 on Sep 5, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

    Terrence won't start imo

Avery hasn’t even mentioned him as a starter has opose to saying “Morrow could come in and beat everyone out at the two” C-lee is gone, three big time shooters starting alongside Harris and Lopez and T-Will bringing a spark off the bench.

by JJ25 on Sep 5, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

    He is right

with Harris in the lineup the need is for shooting from the 3 position. IF Morrow can play respectable defense then he will start.

Farmar will relieve him and Harris.

TWill and Harris are a bad combo. They don’t shoot well and both like to dominate the ball. Last year that was evident.

by Rawdawg05 on Sep 6, 2010 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

    agreed

The one issue that I worry about with Morrow starting is his defense. Otherwise, he and Harris make a better combo than Harris/Williams.

Having two players in the backcourt that can’t shoot is troublesome.

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

by MrDollarBills on Sep 6, 2010 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

    nope

we don’t need shooting at the 2 with Outlaw and Murphy already in the line up.

We need defense in the backcourt (TWill >>>>>>>>>>>>> Morrow), and we need a playmaking wing next to Harris. Williams and Devin are not a bad combo at all. Williams brings things we need next to Devin, remember when he had VC? And Vince was much more of a ball dominant player than Terrence. Idk what are you talking about when you say it’s evident they are not a good combo, when Terrence broke out he played a lot of minutes next to Devin and Harris played well too.

by Andres B on Sep 6, 2010 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

    imo

Harris didn’t play well next to Williams, from what I recall Devin was barely noticeable when T-Will started taking over. But then again, Devin was horrible last season so maybe this year an inspired Harris playing with Terrence will be better.

Over the final 2 months of the season, when Williams broke out, Harris averaged:

    17.2 ppg
    3.1 rpg
    6.2 apg
    .428 FG

Both scoring and FG pct were about his season average, his assists numbers obviously went down a little bit (not too much either, just 0.4) because Williams handled the playmaking duties more.

If Favors was starting at the PF then I’d agree Morrow would be the better fit at the SG, since we wouldn’t have Murphy’s shooting in the starting line up and since Favors can protect the rim and help our guards D if they got blown by.

    above not about

    also I agree with this:
    http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=16956

Of course, Harris starting scoring more frequently over the last two months of the season as rookie Terrence Williams was given playmaking duties on offense. This season, expect Harris to continue to play off of Williams on offense, but handle point guards on defense.

by Andres B on Sep 6, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

    good stuff Andres

I was way too lazy and hung over to look up the stats.

Okay, so you may have a point. A full training camp working together could help the chemistry as well/

No post would be complete without bringing up Melo.

The latest story from Fanhouse, that Billups will soon be trying to convince Melo to accept extension, supports the believe that Melo will wait until after the season begins before making any decision. That will be good for Nets fans, because most of us want to at least see how the present team performs, before possibly trading Favors. I am confident that TWill, DJames, Harris, Outlaw and other Nets will exceed the low expectations of others, who don’t follow the Nets regularly.

And remember, that if we wait until Dec. 15, then Outlaw/Farmar can be included in a trade, making it unnecessary to trade Harris or Murphy in order to make cap space work, and since Nuggets already like Lawson.

Except both those guys have smaller contracts than Harris/Murphy meaning you would need to throw in even more pieces to make a trade work

Not to mention Troy Murphy is an expiring contract while everyone else isn’t, making him more attractive

by muwu on Sep 5, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

You are forgetting that Nets also have Hump at 3.2 million (7+3.2=10.2 million) towards the needed 12.86 million to move to Denver.

Nets need to keep Murphy to make playoffs and hopefully will be able to re-sign Murphy to a more reasonable extension.

Also, if no one picks up Jarvis Hayes, why wouldn’t he be available as cap space filler, even after the season begins?

If Nets threw in Murphy, then Denver would be picking up additional salary, something they don’t want to do.
Also Denver already likes Lawson better than Harris (If Harris was involved, Lawson would have to be included), for their long term future, once he gets another year of experience behind Billips.

Bottom line is that Nuggets would accept Outlaw with Favors, once they see them play early this Fall. Clearly that would leave the Nets the strongest, for the next few years. And without Favors, Nuggets would probably have other teams to work with, unless Melo would reject those other teams.

I rather they get it over with

as you recall everyone wa calling you crazy when you kept on trading Cap Space for Murphy so trading Murphy isn’t the probelm they(Net fans on this site) would have rather wanted to see a log jam at the 2 than have 14 and 10 guy T-Will, James and Murphy for Anthony and Balkman get it done King.

by JJ25 on Sep 5, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubt if Nuggets would do that trade right now.

Maybe after season starts and TWill as well as James are proving to be the real thing. Then Nets fans would want to hold off.

by jerry25 on Sep 5, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Who would you rather gie up in a trade for Melo?

Devin Harris, Damion James, Kris Humpries, Quinton Ross Or Troy Murphy, Terrence Williams, Damion James and Picks for Carmelo.
    The first trade
    Portland Gets:
    Devin Harris
    Kris Humpries
    Nuggets Get:
    Rudy Fernandez
    Joel Pryzbilla
    Damion James
    Quinton Ross
Picks from NJ (3) AND PL(2)
    Nets Get:
    Carmelo
    Bayless

Nets would have a solid lineup Bayless/Farmar, T-Will/Morrow, Carmelo/Outlaw, Murphy/Favors and Lopez/Petro Matter of fact IMO probably the best trade ive seen and not becuase its my trade LMAO I should be a GM. In this senario You don’t mess with what your tying to do (gut your team) they get a young piece in Bayless for Harris and Melo for James and have a chance to get another talent through free agency next year.

I don't want to make any decisions until after the regular season starts and there is a better idea what people are worth.

I don’t think Nuggets will pull the trigger on Melo, any time soon, especially if Melo wants to hold off. Both Billups and Coach Karl are yet to talk with Melo.

I have a feeling that Nets players will increase in value and that Melo will be more receptive to wanting a trade to join Proky’s team.

Some people are just too impatient. Thorn preached patience.
And besides, I want to include Jarvis Hayes in any trade for Melo. I don’t want to give up talent, and hurt the future, just to satisfy the cap space requirement, when it might not be necessary.

    If

Carmelo tests free agency, he is signing with the Knicks. You are delusional.

by GALLO! on Sep 5, 2010 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

We never even mentioned free agency, and that probably is true.

That’s why we’re just thinking of a trade because the teams that will trade for him will only agree if Melo signs the extension right after.

Nobody knows that people think that

How people thought Lebron was sighing with the Knicks, Lebron had supposed friends that said that like Melo. Melo to the Knicks is not some self fulfilling prophecy yet in my eyes.

    carmelo

anthony wants to play for the Knicks. i dont know if he will, but to say he does not want to be a knick is wrong.

by GALLO! on Sep 6, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

GALLO is delusional if you think Denver would let the trade deadline pass without either extending Melo or S&T Mello.

Melo has indicated he wants the extra money he could get now. No telling how much he would be able to get next summer.
That means he will get the extra money, one way or another, but free agency is not an option. Therefore no Knicks for Melo.

And Knicks fans will be in for a surprise if they think their team will make the playoffs.
Amare’s fame will be on the back page of the Sports sections, being ripped to shreds.

    the

article that was posted said that carmelo will wait until after the season to make decision, so in the case that he does test free agency, he will be a Knick.

by GALLO! on Sep 6, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

just like you assumed that Lebron wanted to be a Knick as well?

    Just to point out

He potentially leaves a lot of money on the table if he waits. If he wants to wait to become a knick why is he requesting trades.

    It's About Distribution!

LFrank was a good coach, with injured and bad players. KIKI was a bad coach. Everything changes this year, with AJ and better players. HOWEVER…Our success this year will depend on minute and shot distribution. AJ will determine who gets on the floor, and what kind of offense we run. But it will be up to Devin, Farmar and TWILL as far as who get the shots. Our point guards need to make sure that Brook, Murph, Outlaw and Morrow get their shots, history tells us that they will make their shots, but only if they get the ball at the right moments and in the right places. If Morrow hits his shots, and AJ makes sure that he gets his share, and he plays defense, yes, this could be a breakout year for him, and he could prove to be a major bargain. I want to go to war with this group, I grow tired of the MELO TALK. At least we won’t be wasting our time discussing whether YI is ever going to wake up and smell the coffee….I am looking forward to seeing Morrow and the rest of our team. GO NEW NETS!

    finally

i’m glad we’re finally talking about this guy… well the article at least… most of the comments are dealing with this clown “gallo”

with quality 3 point shooting this season, i think we are going to see the rest of the team develop. lopez will finally have options when he is triple teamed. no more forcing bad shots. devin and t-will will have outlet options when they drive. no more contested layups and blocked shots.

very rarely does a good long-range shooter get credit for “making his teammates better,” when actually these players allow the rest of the team to play their game and capitalize on what they are good at.

It's been a long time coming

For years I have been saying the Nets needed to acquire a reliable, solid pure shooter. Well, it looks like we finally have one. This guy Morrow is certainly the best move the Nets have made this offseason (followed by the Troy Murphy deal). I am pretty psyched to have a guy like this on our team, I think he will be a game changer.

    Finally

For years this team has lacked a solid pf and a knock down shooter. We finally have both. The future is bright I love Morrow’s game
