Liberty Moving In with Nets

The New York Liberty will join the Nets at the Prudential Center next year, giving the state's largest city two professional basketball teams.  The WNBA Liberty, owned by the Dolan family, will have to play in New Jersey the next two to three years while Madison Square Garden undergoes an $850 million renovation.

The Liberty is one of the WNBA's top teams and is in the league's Eastern Conference Finals.  Former Rutgers star Cappie Pondexter leads the Liberty. In addition to the Devils, Nets and Liberty, "The Rock" also hosts Seton Hall basketball.

Sounds like a waste of money to refurbish MSG for $850 million for 3 summers' worth of rennovation.

When completed, Barclays will still be better that the refurbished MSG at nearly the same price tag .
Barclays sounds like a bargain by comparison.

MSG will always be popular

Despite all the new arenas, MSG will always be known as the World’s Most Famous Arena, because it even has international events by that matter.

I wonder if ESPN will choose to rename the team the Newark Liberty, the way they enjory making fun of the Nets by calling them the Newark Nets?

Or will ESPN finally acknowledge that when a free agent wants to play in New York, that the Nets are one of the TWO teams he has to choose from.

For example, if Melo says he wants to play in New York, it is about time that it is interpreted as EITHER for the Nets or Knicks. 99% of the time, ESPN and the rest of the media assume he means Knicks.

being it is ESPN

I’m sure they will find yet another way to make jokes about the Nets having to share the court with the Liberty.

lol

keep telling yourself that. Melo’s wife has said he wants to play for the Knicks, specifically. The Amar’e, Melo, Paul stuff was about the Knicks. Can’t twist that buddy. He might be okay with being a Net, but that doesn’t mean it’s his first choice, because it’s clearly not.

by Millsj on Sep 3, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

it doesnt matter one iota

what Mrs. Melo said or whether his first choice is the Knicks. What matters is whether he would accept a trade to the Nets, which he reportedly said he would.

All the rest is Knick propaganda. Shouldnt you be worried that Donnie Walsh tried to trade future Hall of Famer Anthony Randolph for foreigner Rudy Fernandez?

THIS IS A TRAVESTY!

Why is New Jersey stealing the NY Liberty? You mean to tell me all of us loyal NEW YORK fans are supposed to go all the way to Newark? This is ridiculous. It’s almost 20 minutes from the NY border. There is an arena right in Nassau County they could play in. WNBA commissioner Donna Orender needs to step in and intervene. This is disgusting!!

But seriously… Did we just steal the Knicks’ girlfriend?

I am still unhappy about this

The real reason why the Liberty will be playing some seasons at the Prudential Center is because of the rennovation going over at MSG. For some reason the Knicks and Rangers will not be told to play elsewhere when this happens yet this is the case for the Liberty. I can still remember back in 2004 when they were forced to play their home games over at Radio City Music Hall just because of the RNC using MSG, though I did attend a game there. When the Shock, who are now in Tulsa, were recently in the playoffs a few years ago, they had to play much of their postseason games over at Eastern Michigan University because of the scheduling conflicts at The Palace of Auburn Hills. They even had to play a deciding game of an earlier WNBA Finals at Joe Louis Arena over in downtown Detroit because of a Shakira concert that was claimed on being unable to reschedule. It seems that WNBA teams are always getting shafted and being shafted a lot while NBA and NHL teams are saved. On a sidenote, there was little or no coverage in NYC area newspapers when the Liberty beat the Fever to advance to the Eastern Confrence Finals against the Dream. Their only mention was either by a sportswire or and AP article. It makes me think that if they do finally win a championship, it won’t even be on the front page. BTW, I did look at the back pages of both the Post and Daily News, and there was no mention of the Liberty winning that series, but something like Andy Roddick’s meltdown at the US Open was more newsworther than that. Even the Red Bulls are getting more recognized by the Liberty.

Cut the sexism and naysaying

For the last 13 years, there are those who made remarks about the WNBA that happened to be sexist. I have been on Google, and still find many places where there are naysayers and many of them have used sexism. I can even bring up the links where I have seen these statement. There are still those who want to throw a brick at the TV show everytime a WNBA commercial shows up just because they think it’s being forced on them when it’s not. When the NBA was young, they went through a lot of this as well as did the NFL, MLB, and NHL, so the WNBA is only going through similar statements. You may hate it now, but you will probably like it later as the league gets better. BTW, the Liberty didn’t just lead this season in home attendance, but they also had the biggest jump from last season as well. If it’s really not sexist to move the Liberty due to rennovation, then what it is? If the Dolans really want it done fast, then why not move the Knicks and Ragners rather than be selective on the Liberty?

by Tal Barzilai on Sep 3, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw nothing sexist about his reply

This is a NJ Nets site, not a WNBA fan site. Go to the Liberty’s sbnation affiliate if you wanna talk about that. If I came to netsdaily and went on a rant about the state of horse racing today, a topic that I care about, I would expect a “who cares” response on that, too. You’re barking up the wrong tree. That’s all he meant.

by JohnFromLongIsland on Sep 3, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say "who cares" John

I’d ask for some advice on getting in on the action

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

Just to let you know

Most of the people that I hear saying things against the WNBA are sexist. I even found a website from a person who says women show go back to being houswives rather than having jobs as their husbands do. BTW, I did check on SB Nation NY, and saw literally no links for the Liberty as if they are left out. Come to think of it, if I go to other SB communities in other cities that have WNBA teams, the other teams won’t be mentioned either. Even the MLS teams are there, but not the WNBA teams. In other words, there is no SB affiliate for the Liberty or any WNBA team in that matter. The league has been around long enough to be noticed, and I never found that video by the Young Turks when they claimed that the WNBA does not earn the coverage despite how much rating went up. Overall, what does it take to get the WNBA noticed? Do fans have to start cancelling subscriptions to all sports media? On a sidenote, I am surprised you said NJ Nets and not Brooklyn Nets for the fan site, nevertheless, this about the Liberty, so my claim is relevant.

What do you have against the WNBA?

Is there really something you have against the WNBA? Are you sexist? Did you have a girlfriend that tried out for some teams and got cut? Some of the things I hear about those saying against the WNBA have been known for not just attacking the players, but also the fans.

The WNBA play in the summer, a better time for construction projects, which is when most of the renovations are happening. The reason it’s going to take 3 years is because the construction company is doing it in phases. Instead of dealing with outside factors (scheduling of Knicks and Rangers games, inclement weather), costing everyone more money, they are clearing MSG out for the summer time and getting each phase completed. It just worked out better for to move one team during a good period of time than move two teams during a difficult time.

Still not a reason

Just because the Liberty play in the summer doesn’t make it a reason to only do it when they are playing. If the Liberty should move because of this, then so should the Knicks and Rangers. It can be done sooner if none of the teams are there for the duration of it. Please tell me why is it only good to do it when the Liberty are playing, but not the Kincks and Rangers. I just don’t find it the royal screw job, but also sexist at the same time. If it’s not sexism, then explain why is it only good to do it when the Liberty are playing. I have seen many rennovations that were done durring the winter, so this should not be an excuse.
