One recent article (can't remember which, there have been so many) said that the Nets consider Carmelo a top 5 player in the league. That struck me as a bit high, but he is clearly up there. But just how high? A lot depends upon the criteria you use. I'm using value to the Nets and ignoring positional considerations (e.g., how would we play Brook and Dwight Howard together). We are coming off a 12 win season and are not ready to contend right now for a title. For us, a player who is likely to perform at a high level for at least the next five years barring injury is more valuable than a guy who is great now but likely to decline (e.g., Kobe, Dirk, Nash, etc.). Similarly, some young players may develop into bigger stars, but aren't there yet (Rose, Evans, Steph Curry, etc.). So here is a list of players in no particular order that I rank higher than Carmelo:
Dwight Howard
Relax, I'm joking about Randolph. So I have Carmelo at #9. Certainly a top player, but not top five. Where do you rank him?
