Stein: Trade Speculation Is Nice, But Reality Is Nuggets Can Wait

ESPN's Mark Stein reports Thursday that while everyone is putting together potential trade packages for Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets aren't listening...yet.

Stein writes, "Sources tied to five potential Anthony suitors, reached in recent days by ESPN.com, all relayed the same story about the Nuggets’ response: They’re pretty much ending these conversations before they even start by saying that they don't want to engage in Melo talks."

How long before there's serious talks? Stein says the Nuggets want to make sure 'Melo really is dead-set on leaving. If he is, then they will pick up the phone, but don't expect anything for another couple of weeks...and the speculation could extend all the way to February trade deadline.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

These top tier players are only following suit.
This all started with LeBron and is having a domino effect in the NBA.
It want stop until Stern takes a stand and some sort of rules are implemented in the future to deter this type of action.
If this trend is allowed to continue, it will be a case of the haves and the have-nots. This cannot be good for the future of the NBA.

by aunt-B on Sep 2, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree

but Stern will only get up off of his rear end when the bottom line starts taking a hit.

Right now, having a team that could fill up arenas around the country and become hated like the Miami Heat is $$$$$$$$$. they should purposely play up the “bad guy” role, IMO, makes for good TV. Maybe set up a staged incident where a group of young fans try to get Lebron’s autograph, he looks at them smugly, and then ignores them totally.

Love today is Hate tomorrow, milk it for what it’s worth.

I wonder if that meeting was as tense as the meeting between Mike Tannenbaum and Kellen Clemens that was shown last night on “Hard Knocks”.

tannenbaum is a DB is those meetings

he doesnt even let people sit down before he tells them they’re cut. no class.

by Chakroot on Sep 2, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I also think that Tannenbaum is on cocaine

if you get a chance, watch him carefully if you catch a repeat of last night’s episode. Dude’s nose is constantly red and he seems very, very wired.

He definitely is a DB. The Jets organization embarassed themselves last night by even allowing HBO top air the footage of Tannenbaum strong arming Clemens like that. And then people wonder why Revis is sitting at home right now? I don’t blame him one bit.

for real

tannenbaum is a bull in a china shop with most of that stuff. even the drive back from the Revis meeting (two weeks ago) seemed so forced and scripted. with him, then woody johnson stalking the sidelines at practice like he actually makes football decisions… i just don’t like it. i’m a giants man, but a NEW JERSEY sports fan, so i follow both.

we'll know in the first two weeks of the season...

what Melo’s intentions are. if a player of lebron’s abilities (and previously-assumed ‘good character’) can give up on his team in the playoffs knowing that he was departing from that team, i wonder how all of the trade talks and rumors are going to affect Melo’s on-the-court personality.

if the nets are truly going after this guy, they should pay attention to the cues he’s giving early in the year. someone who is going to mail it in, at any point during the year or their career, we should stay away from.

by Chakroot on Sep 2, 2010 8:31 AM EDT reply actions

To be fair, Kobe Bryant also mailed it in on the Lakers as well and then demanded a trade.

Vince also mailed it in on the Raptors. I don’t have the info in front of me now but his PPG on the Raps prior to being traded to us and what he did as a Net that season were like night and day. So we can’t assume he’ll dog it once he gets here. I don’t think he will.

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

by MrDollarBills on Sep 2, 2010 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

i don't think he'll dog it once he moves...

(notice i didn’t say “if” he moves)

the point is that it reveals more about the man than the basketball player when these guys try to pull this stuff. we all know melo can put the ball in the basket. its a mental toughness issue. it’s giving 100% when there is no reason except personal pride and being a contributing member to a team.

THATs why i am worried about acquiring him. i don’t care if the nuggets lose every game until he is traded. i DO care that we are moving potentially great players to pick up a guy that could just as easily mail it it (wearing a NETs jersey) and demand a trade.

by Chakroot on Sep 2, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

yesterday I wrote that Melo could also be one of those guys that really could care less about winning a title.

Not everyone is born with the desire to win championships. Some guys just want the money and comfort.

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

by MrDollarBills on Sep 2, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

yup.

i believe i had responded to that very post with the ‘rhetorical question of the year.’

i think to a certain extent everyone wants a championship. the determination and hard work that is required of professional athletes just to get themselves into a position to PLAY professionally would scare off any athlete that only “kinda wants to win it someday… maybe.”

melo’s in a rare situation where maybe he thinks he peeked in college (maybe he did…). he already got his “ring” and that was truly his own at the time. HE won that. maybe he’s content knowing that he personally took that team to the top.

just to reiterate the point from yesterday, there is NO PLACE on this roster for an individual that does not seek the ring. complacency went out the door with ratner, yi, frank and anyone else that has since departed. we want wins. we want wins. if melo’s head isn’t in the same spot, then its up to our front office to recognize this and move on.

by Chakroot on Sep 2, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I’m all for bringing Melo here if the price is right, but I’d want a Melo that’s focused on winning the big one

I can’t say what’s really going on his head, but whatever for now. If the Nuggets want to sit on their hands, that’s fine, I want to see what we have first before we trade off players. I think that our group is going to stun a few folks.

Maybe in time the Nets and Nuggets will do another big trade. Nets do have some ways – several, of making a deal that both teams could like.

Until the topic heats up again, I’m signing off. Good luck with this years new faces.

In case the opportunity arises to pursue Melo, just be sure to step up and offer BOTH Lopez and Favors. Thanks in advance…. tsk, tsk.

My mind has not changed. This is what I still think is happening. To quote myself from two nights ago:
It’s becoming increasingly clear that no offers have been made, or at least serious negotiations have not begun, because the Nuggets are still trying to get Melo to stay. Serious negotiations won’t begin until AFTER the Nuggets give up on trying to sway Melo. Therefore, it debunks the Lopez-as-prerequisite rumors.

My hunch is, if anything has occurred at all, it’s that the Nuggets have gotten word through back channels that what they’re being offered or at least what has been put on the table by other teams such as the Nets is not "good enough" in their eyes to warrant a talent like Melo, so they’re going back to the drawing board trying to woo Melo. Once they realize that Melo is an unrequited love, they’ll be stuck having to settle for what the Nets and other teams actually DO offer them, which is unlikely to include Lopez and (hopefully) Favors.

In addition, this would also explain why they’re trying to wrestle back control of the narrative, attempting to debunk Woj’s report and others that Melo wants out. They still want the frame to be that Melo will consider staying, because that is the goal they have gone back to setting for themselves — get Melo to stay.

Nets = Global
Knicks = Local

Pau Gasol style. does carmelo have a slower, less-talented brother we can leave there in his place?!?!

I REALLY HOPE

that all this Melo talk goes away.

I really want to see THIS NETS team before we start trading pieces. I really want to see Favors play. I want to see Twill’s new role. I want to see the old Harris. I want Outlaw to produce so if we have to trade him his stock is high.

Melo would be nice but waiting would be better.

by SIC One on Sep 2, 2010 10:50 AM EDT reply actions

Again the failed logic here

Is that if the Nets players look really bad, and Favors looks like a busy early on, and we are 2 – 15 on the season – suddenly our “assets” don’t look that attractive in a trade for Melo.

by eLonepb on Sep 2, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Failed Logic!!!

REALLY!!!

What if we trade Favors and he becomes a STAR. What if Melo is disgruntle and asks to be traded to again. What if Melo breaks a leg and misses two months.

What if…What if…. What if….

Before you start calling people out re-read your F’en post.

The FACTS are THE NETS have Harris, Twill, Outlaw, Favors, and Lopez.

The RUMORS are Denver wants to TRADE MELO.

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!

by SIC One on Sep 2, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yessir!!

If we miss out on Melo because we stink Mid-Season then 2 bad. I would rather take that gamble then trade away Favors. The odds are we will be ALOT! better then last year we wont sniff 2-15

Got enough exclamation marks?

I can only assume you were typing very angry into your keyboard. Poor keyboard.

But no, your logic is still flawed. We have a poor team right now, but better than last year. But still a poor team with not a single go-to scorer.

by eLonepb on Sep 2, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

We lack a go to scorer, agreed

but calling this a “poor team” is pushing it.

Look at the roster, compared to last year’s sack of garbage. This team can go 10 deep and remain competitive. The question is, who will step up in crunchtime and break their man down off of the dribble?

Harris? Williams?

Not angry at all!!!

I just like to put exclamation points!!!

Anyway How is my logic still flawed? Have you seen that new stories? The Melo talks are disappearing like the CP3 rumors. Now Denver is saying that they dont want to trade him yet. Next you will see a story where Management had a meeting and Melo isnt going to talk about being traded.

Of course, as we get closer to the trade deadline CP3 and Melo trade rumors will resurface.

So why was my logic flawed again?

can i just say...

that i am so happy with the progress this team has made. whether the world likes it or not, the NJ Nets are major players in the NBA, despite the 12-70.

BSPN can only deny us for so long. knicks homers and denver faithfuls can only deny us for so long. the nets are here and ready to make a splash with or without Melo. in all honesty, i did not expect to be this confident in the team less than a year ago, or even 3 months ago.

by Chakroot on Sep 2, 2010 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Agree 100%...

That a “Superstar” would actually consider playing for us, and the team that has him, looks at our assets as the most enticing. Plus all the so called “experts” point to the Nets as the team with the “goods” to get the deal done. All this after a 12-70 season, not landing John Wall, and striking out in free agency. Pretty good position to be in after all that turmoil.

Lets go Nets…

by M I K E on Sep 2, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Dec 15

Beginning at December 15, Nets can include newly signed free agents. That means, for example, that Travis Outlaw can be included in the trade also. My hope is that things drag out until at least then, giving Billy King more options in trading. In particular, I think that Outlaw may be an important chip, given that he plays the SF position (and Denver would need a SF to replace Melo). In addition, simply to make the numbers work in a trade, Nets need to include at least one high salary guy – Harris, Murphy or Outlaw.

by A.S. on Sep 2, 2010 11:30 AM EDT reply actions

really though?

do you think denver wants Travis Outlaw, or that contract? we don’t even want him for that, and we’re the ones that signed him two months ago!

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

by MrDollarBills on Sep 2, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand that Denver likely doesn't want Outlaw's contract

I understand that completely. It was a terrible contract, one that I would prefer the Nets get rid of, and one Denver probably doesn’t want. But Outlaw does fill the hole at SF for them if Melo is traded (who else do they got – Renaldo Balkman???). And he helps make the salaries match. So it might be an at least somewhat valuable piece to fill in the blanks around the centrpiece from the Nets side (say Lopez, or Favors).

by A.S. on Sep 2, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Delaying until Dec. 15 and requiring Denver take Outlaw, if they want Favors badly, is the best outcome for Nets.

Although it may appear that a trade should come within the next few weeks, there are 3 sides that would need to agree, yet most of the writers and not considering all 3 sides. That makes things much more difficult.

Waiting 6 weeks into the season is a reasonable compromise, rather than wait until mid-February.

As long as Outlaw gets starter minutes with Nets, he will impress Denver enough that they would accept a deal with Outlaw+Favors. Then you only need to add Hump or preferably Jarvis Hayes. That would be simple.

by jerry25 on Sep 2, 2010 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

you have no clue

if this is a terrible contract or not.

Why not let the guy earn his pay before you string him up in the middle of the town square?

The Outlaw hate on here is so unwarranted, but I guess now with CDR gone, Yi gone, and with people slowly realizing that Williams can actually be a good player, someone has to be the whipping boy around here and I guess it’s Outlaw.

I thought that Outlaw was making 7 per, not 15 per season.

who

offered outlaw 6 million or 3 years?
who offered johan petro 3 years??

morrow fair deal, actually i think it is a steal

farmar…. fair deal.

the outlaw deal, although he is a nice role player… good bench guy is way too many years and he is worth 5 million or 6 imo, not 7, but no biggie.

petro is a horrendous deal. he stinks.

by GALLO! on Sep 2, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

think about it this way

would you rather have

petro outlaw and farmar or carlos boozer…… Carlos boozer without any hesitation. petro sucks, the nets dont need outlaw to space the floor as much with morrow, and backup pg’s are a dime a dozen.

by GALLO! on Sep 2, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd prefer Anthony Randolph

and his hall of fame neck skills, leading the charge into battle.

In all seriousness…why would we want to sign Boozer to an 80 million dollar deal over 5 years? What would that do for us? The Bulls will be pissed off in about 3 seasons when Boozer is eating their capspace and in a suit for 65% of the season.

Petro is a back up center, he’s not killing our cap. None of the players that we signed are killing our cap, in fact, they all addressed needs, and before we traded for Murphy’s expiring deal(and his services), we were BELOW the league required minimum for total salary…so all of that stuff about overpaying, it’s a bunch of uninformed garbage.

And yes, the Nets do need Outlaw to help space the floor, and provide some clutch shooting in the 4th. You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re killing yourself on here when you come up with this stuff

And it’s laughable that a Knicks fan would call out the Nets for signing someone to a “horrendous deal”, when you guys bid against yourselves to sign Amare to a 100 mil contract that your team’s insurers won’t touch with a 10 foot pole. Good luck.

if

the nets would have spent that money on a star, boozer….

they could have used favors, gsw pick, their pick, humphries, and hayes (correct me if im wrong but they could sign him for one year 4 million as an expiring deal), and say williams for carmelo anthony. your essentially giving 2 first rounders, favors, and terrence for carmelo which is a fair deal.

lopez
boozer
carmelo
morrow
harris

that starting five could win an nba championship. obviousally the bench would need to be worked out, but its not like you cant find a johan petro in the d league…. heck id rather have earl the pearl barron.

that front court is top 5 in the game obviousally and with an all star pg and great shooter to spread the floor for lopez that would be absolutely devastating.

There is also a notion among writers that Nets would do anything to get Melo. That is false.

Ok putting aside the Carmelo Rumors

What do you guys think about this Team after all is said and done?
My biggest concern is defense, but avery is a defenseive minded coach.
I think the scoring can be off the charts with this group. If Lopez makes the jump like we expect and T-will plays D, No kidding i believe by the second half of the season we can be on a Level that the Bucks were last year

by nwkiddnj on Sep 2, 2010 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

Why is defense your concern? Specifically.

by Mikee21 on Sep 2, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Lopez, Murphy

Morrow (Harris didnt play well last year)

by nwkiddnj on Sep 2, 2010 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

ah! actual basketball discussion, a novel idea

My biggest worry is basically interior defense, and the time it will take for Favors to become a nightly contributor. I figure our starting line up will be Lopez/Murph/Outlaw/Harris, and it’s up to Avery to decide between Morrow or Williams at the 2. I’m worried that we might be a bit weak on the inside defensively with the starting unit with Lopez and Murphy in the frontcourt but I’ll live with it until Derrick is ready, and I’m sure Avery will have us playing better team defense anyway so hopefully that can disguise our flaws inside.

Other than that, I think we look pretty good for a team coming off of a 12 win season.

Offensively, I think we’re going to give teams fits. Doubling off of Morrow, Murph, or Outlaw to attack Brook will be a fool’s errand. Morrow’s threes won’t even touch the rim, all you’ll hear is “SWOCK!”

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

I hope Derrick Favors has a Keyon Martin like Rookie season

in my opinion he could he just needs to be aggresive and look to tear down the Rim every time and look to make his man remember him each time on defense and offense as of now he doesn’t look to have toughness he is more laid back but who knows. Keyon Martin was never a dominant scorer on the low post he just knew how to get by his man with his quickness and athletisism and dunked it everytime with authority something Favors can do Martin didn’t have a pure jumpshot neither does Favors but he has the ability to knock it down from 10-18ft.
Favors worst case Keyon Martin
Favors best case better Defensive and Rebounder version of Amare Stoudemire (he said it himself).

strange. Now I don't know any Bulls fans in the present

Laker fans on the other hand….

There's nothing new in Stein's story

other than the fact that Denver is not yet entertaining offers for Anthony, and that’s just another rumor, of course.

Did you just get out of school by any chance?

Where you been? Just read most of the comments on the board, and you will of known that it was a sloooooooooow news day. LOL

yeah

It has been slow as hell around here.

I guess a lot of our fellow posters are back in school now, leaving those of us who are “working” to hold down the fort.

training camp is a few weeks away

There will be plenty to talk about then. It will be interesting to see how the players relate to one another. Who will assert themselves as leaders and such.

Devin could be a possibility....

…since he knows Avery and the system. He will also be held accountable to lead by Avery, whether he likes it or not. It will be good for him.

I think Murph will emerge as a leader as well. Brook needs to take some of that surly behavior we saw from him last year and put it towards being a leader as well

Farmar could possibly provide some as well, since he has been apart of a winning team.

if that happens

It will be a far cry from last year where no one stepped up to lead. But in all fairness to the team, leadership should start from the top down.

Man, you guys must have been boooored today!

Since my job doesn’t allow us Internet access, I’m forced to read and post from my iPhone… But the joke’s on them, Netflix now streams movies to the phone, so I’ve been watching movies instead of working all day, but I had to ignore netsdaily for the afternoon. Glad to see we won’t be able to screw up a trade for Melo til Denver is good and ready and his stock is lower than it is now.

YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

Our guys value has no where to go but up. past december and we can send off murphy, outlaw, or others who are near their potential. Besides us getting out of iraq, this is the best news ive heard in awhile. no way id trade brook or favors and only one of either twill or djames. Id rather keep rebuilding the right way otherwise.

Murphy has a love for the Nets, for that alone, he must stay!

by Tim823 on Sep 2, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

For that same reason

if there is a trade that involves him there should be a buy out mandated by the Nets. Nets give them 3 Million they pay only around 6 Million in buy out they get there two Pieces plus picks and the Nets have a guy that wants to play for them and loves the team and area since he was a little kid.
Lopez/Petro
Murphy/Favors/Hump
Anthony/Outlaw
Afflalo/Morrow/Ross
Harris/Farmar
Not bad at all Top 4 team in East no question and would be very dangerous in the playoffs.
Avery Johnson getting these guys to play D like in he did with those guys in Dallas Top 2 in east he has authority in his word you see it in Harris alone how he went from a very good defender to almost non existing in 2008-2010. Diop not the same defender, even Dampier Notwitzki wasn’t a good defender with Avery, but was decent and now he allows guys to score in bunches.

Wrong

Value can go down a lot.

Melo would be great but I don’t like the idea of WWWes running the organization.

i wouldn’t mind passing up on Melo so long as we participated in the deal and got good picks in return either

i just dreamt of melo playing with us..

and hump,ross,uzou, and 2 1st rnd pick was traded…

hmm..its just a dream anyway…

by njason21 on Sep 3, 2010 4:11 AM EDT reply actions

hehe nice dream...

But i really deal id do is Harris, Twill and picks. Throw in James if we have too. But no way in GO NETS! id give up Favors and Lopez. You build around those guys not give em up.

by danxcr on Sep 3, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

that's still a baaaaaaaaaad trade for the Nets

we’d be left with the absolute most terrible backcourt in the game.
