Open Practice at "The Rock" Part of Nets' Final Newark Push

Brett Yormark says the Nets have done well this summer selling Newark.  They rank in the upper third of the NBA in new full and partial-season ticket packages. Now, with the season five weeks away, they're making a final push to sell Newark with an open practice at 6:30 p.m. on September 30 at the Prudential Center.

It's part of the team's "Experience It!" marketing program, pushing fans to sample the new arena two blocks from Penn Station, Newark.  Yormark says he's hoping to get ticket revenue back to "pre-recession levels".  Considering that those revenues dropped from $37 million in 2007-08 to $26 million in 2009-10, that will be a challenge, writes John Brennan.

Yea, why is it on a weekday this year?

I loved making the drive from LI to Ramapo on a Saturday AM, it was nice. No way am I getting from work to Newark in time for the practice.

He added that the team will have a Sept. 30 “open practice” at the arena for current and prospective season-ticket holders.

only for season ticket holders?

“There’s the fan who can’t wait for us to get to Brooklyn”. Only one? That is just sad.

The Nets need to “work the hardest” to create the belief that Carmelo is coming. It helped with Lebron, did it not?

Knowing BSPN...

They won’t even bother tallying our votes, they’ll just throw up the starting line up from last season and make some cracks about playing at the Meadowlands…

This list is B.S.

you should be allowed to pick from at least 5 players per position. I would slide Jason Williams over to the C spot, put DC as the PF, Dr. J at SF, Vince at SG, and Kidd at PG. Flawless all time 5 IMO.

“The Nets face the challenge of trying to convince Bergen County residents to head a dozen miles south to Newark.”
Oh boo-hoo, a measly dozen miles. Yet it seems like Monmouth County folks have no apprehensions getting there. Whatever. This just proves like the Devils, the Nets’ fanbase(or the world) doesn’t revolve around Bergen County.

by Marv95 on Sep 17, 2010 8:55 AM EDT reply actions

actually

if you live along the New Jersey Coast Line, it’s a lot easier to get there than it is from Bergen County.

But Newark is so much easier for the majority of state residents to get to. Lets see if that translates into more and better fans.

by Net Income on Sep 17, 2010 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly

Newark is easier for everyone to get to. I can simply arrive home after work, pregame, and hop right on the train and get to Newark with no sweat, won’t have to worry about traffic or anything. This is like a dream come true for me.

Disgruntled Bergen County residents can eat cake. It’s not like they were lining up in droves to attend Nets games anyway, I’d be interested to know how many folks from that part of the state were attending games on the regular. At least now, die hards from most of the state can attend with little trouble thanks to the accessibility.

I can sit here and recount my adventures trying to get to BOS vs. NJ playoff games back in ‘02 as a college senior with no car…I have no sympathy for those ’poor’ folks up there.

Those folks hopping on the trains this season…please drink responsibly….or drink with me.

Bergen County...

They were driving then, they can drive now. What’s the diff?

by eLonepb on Sep 17, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

actually

I live along the North Jersey Coast Line. It’s not as easy as you think to get to the Pru by train from Monmouth County during the regular season. For example, I’d have to leave work no later than 5pm in order to catch a train that gets there in time for tip off. The fare is $22 round trip (we have 3 seats). $66 per game?? Last yr (when tip off was 7:30), all we’d pay is @$5 on EZpass and we’d leave by 6 and shoot up the Turnpike and arrive 15 min before tip. If we drive to the Pru, we have to leave work by 5pm, get caught in rush hour traffic and pay the Nets $800 for parking. I’m a huge Nets fan; I can’t see current casual fans finding the location attractive enough to do the trek 43 times.

by fastbreak7 on Sep 17, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

ouch

that sucks. I think I might be paying $10 at most round trip.

depends on how far away you live

and how much you can tolerate traffic and parking.

By the way, parking at the Rock is $22 to $25. You forgot that.

by Net Income on Sep 17, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe this can help

There is already a line along the coast line to begin with that will stop at Newark-Penn Station. The only problem is that NJT is a commuter rail and not a subway. Then again, these trains do tend to come more commonly durring peak hours, but I only know that from Metro-North RR from taking it, so I am not sure what is the case for NJT. You can always look online at their website for the train schedules to see which is the best one to take, though you can also get a pocket schedule of the line you are using. If you choose to drive, you don’t have to take the nearby lots, I usually found free parking on one the nearby streets that didn’t recquire it, though you should still read the signs to make sure that they are legal. plus most metered spots should be lifted after 6 or 7 PM, so you don’t have to pay them. There is a good reason why I don’t use the parking lots or garages when going to MSG, Citifield, and even Yankee Stadium when going to games there, because they are pretty pricey, and they are integrated into cities rather than be isolated in which you would have to use the paid parking like at the Meadowlands. Keep in mind that even taking the train, you still have to walk two blocks to the Prudential Center from Newark-Penn Station, because it’s not right across the street.

when the Nets have medicocre (or worse) attendance in Newark

it won’t be due to the recession. It will be due to 3 factors: 1- the team currently has almost no fan base after abandoning New Jersey and having one in its infancy in Brooklyn that will not be commutting to Newark by and large to see games. 2- The team is taunting its longtime fans in Jersey by moving to a new arena in Newark with public transportation and modern amenities and then bolting before anyone can even make it to the concession lines 3- Ownership failed miserably to bring in any noteworthy players that would have made the team exciting enough that the 1st 2 factors might even have been overlooked for the 2-year lame duck stay in Newark.

So when they get around 14-15 thousand a night (or whatever they boost it up to with freebies and heavy discounts) don’t come crying about the economy. This is ALL the fault of Ratner and Yormark and now add Prokhorov to the list.

by IsaacNJN on Sep 17, 2010 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

When they get Carmelo Anthony

They’ll have better attendance than they ever had.

by eLonepb on Sep 17, 2010 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Good morning, Isaac

One thing i will say, is that I don’t expect attendance to be mindblowing at first because we still have the stigma of last year and casual basketball fans have no clue about how improved we are. We didn’t add a “sexy” name(yet), so the team will have to get off to a good start and generate “young, up and coming team” buzz to get more folks to come out. We all need to go out and support our squad. Unlike last year, there is an effort to put a good product on the floor, and if Carmelo Anthony comes here, the attendance will rise dramatically

An upset over the Miami Heat on Halloween could be huge for attendance. We need to make sure that the house is sold out that night. I’m going. I would like to bring a sign shouting out NetsDaily, would I be allowed???

I thought she was cuter when she was younger, when she played Rogue in X-Men. She lost the baby fat in her face and it makes her look sort of busted. But she’s in great shape.

Btw, True Blood is absolute crap. With Entourage going into the toilet this season, HBO has really dropped the ball lately. Hopefully this new show about Atlantic City during prohibition will make up for the crap that I watched this summer.

Same Ole Issac

Look… As I’ve said before I appreciate zeal to keep the Nets in NJ, but hoping they fail because of guys like Ratner and Yormark is just wrong. Regardless of the debacles of ownership and marketing the actual “team” isn’t at fault here they’ve actually suffered because of it.

no fan base?

You have NEVER, not ONCE, relied on facts. it’s all your opinion which must be discounted for two reasons: 1) it is unsupported and 2) it’s increasingly tiresome because of its predictability.

by Net Income on Sep 17, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Where are your facts?

You have hardly ever given any facts that there will be a big enough fan base in Brooklyn that can easily replace what is already in NJ. I am still waiting for this. Most fans will never jump ship just because their team does bad or a new team move to their town. I wouldn’t be surprised in Brooklyn that many longtime Knicks fans will still be loyal to the Knicks rather than switch to the Nets just because they move there. The truth is that what they have in NJ is their actual fan base, and the team will lose a big part of it. Even those who do jump over to the Nets, they will most likely be a minority compared to those who will never convert no matter what. In the end, real fans do not convert. If they had a choice between a team that was always NY team compared to a team that hasn’t even been a NY team for that long, they will choose the former over the latter. The reason the Nets left for NJ after their first season in the NBA was the reason they didn’t want to play in the shadow of the Knicks, and that will happen again when comming to Brooklyn.

It’s been awhile. It’s nice that the Nets are doing things like this. Even better that Nets are in the top 10 in the ticket sales they’ve decribed

Gentlemen....Welcome to the Rock!

The IZOD was a horrible place. Horrible inside, horrible to get to and even when we were winning with JKIDD, it was a miserable home court. I watched a hockey game at the Rock, it is a nice place and easier to get to. AND Yormark has money to market the games now, and we will win more than 12 games. Attendance should be better. HOWEVER, I think even after we move to Brooklyn, we should play half a dozen games every year at the Rock. It would be a way to keep the NJ fans connected. Camp’s a week away, and real games, are 5 weeks away, and are Jets and Giants are both going to win on Sunday. Now if only my ex wife would call and ask me to come back? Not that I would go…but I want to be asked!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO NETS!
