Jay-Z Ready To Make Another Sports Investment...in British Soccer Club

Photo

Jay-Z remains a minority investor and more importantly an active presence in the Nets.  He and Mikhail Prokhorov worked out the Blueprint from Greatness, you may recall.  But word out of London is that he's not satisfied with the NBA alone. He wants a piece of Arsenal, London's legendary soccer club.

In an interview this weekend, Jay made it clear: "We would have to spend much more time in London. Bey knows how much I love sports and has known about my interest in Arsenal for a while. I never want to be a back-seat investor. I want to be on the board, involved in the decision-making… I’m at the stage of my career where I am ready for another investment like this."

That's interesting on a number of levels. For one, Jay is laying out what he wants as a Nets investor.  Here's another: the principal owner of Arsenal is Stan Kroenke, who's transferring ownership of the Denver Nuggets to his son, Josh.

Interesting

Aren’t “football” franchises worth more than basketball ones?

And Man U owned by another Russian oligarch

If you haven’t seen one of his yachts, it’s pretty ridiculous. I believe it has a submarine (maybe two) as well as a missile defense system.

Not sure who owns Arsenal.

a missile defense system???

holy CRAP. Link?

I was corrected later in this thread though, that’s not the Man U owner, that’s the Chelsea owner.

Most awesome
Infrared lasers detect the electronic light sensors in nearby cameras, known as charge-coupled devices. When the system detects such a device, it fires a focused beam of light at the camera, disrupting its ability to record a digital image.

Actually, Chelsea are owned by the ‘’Russian oligarch’‘, Roman Abramovich. Arsenal are owned by Stan Kroenke, who’s transferring it to his son, Josh. The Glazers own Manchester United, the same guys who owned the Buccaneers.

by lupojohn3 on Sep 13, 2010 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Man utd

aren’t. You must be thinking of Chelsea. Man U are also in trouble due to the former of very wealthy people buying up other teams. Man City, Blackburn. Man U are owned by the Glazer family who are American I believe.

by shea23 on Sep 13, 2010 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup and Man U is broke

Because the Glaziers took out a 1 billion dollar loan to buy Man U. And their primary source of income was real estate, but we all know how that is right now in this current economy. So they had to sell their best player Renaldo to Real Madrid.

I only know this because im a huge buc fan, and if have seen the Glaziers rip the bucs up like how Ratner did to the Nets. But the Glaziers are starting to spend money again but only on their OWN players from the draft, not FA or RFAs.

Net Income

You seriously have to do your research before posting. Anybody(like me) who follows the Barclays Premier League knows how valuable Arsenal is.

by lupojohn3 on Sep 13, 2010 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

He just said he didn't know.

Are you an American fan or do you live my side of the Atlantic. I think I recognize your name from that foreign nets post a few months back?

I’m an American fan who is a diehard Premier League fan, even though my team(Hull City) is in the Championship. I know he probably said what you did, but I like to get a reaction out of people when it’s an obvious statement by putting the exact opposite. It’s really no big deal. Just good, clean, fun.

Go Man U!

Anybody else going to the jayz concerts at Yankee stadium? I’m going Tuesday. Let’s hope for Arsenal supporters’ sake that Jay Z isn’t “best friends” with any big name soccer free agents…

by JohnFromLongIsland on Sep 13, 2010 10:07 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I'll be there Tuesday as well

And Man U lost this weekend.

Chelsea is my team. True Blue!

I’m a Real Madrid fan. Zinedine Zidane was the best soccer player ever. As for Brittish teams, I like Liverpool. They’ve got the best fan base in soccer, hands down.

"involved in decision making"

What has JayZ contributed to the Nets (in terms of strategic decision making)? The only thing HOV is good for is providing some star attraction at Nets corporate functions.

Absolute nothing!

A 1 per cent investment does not normally get someone a board seat. I guess JZ figures that clubs will put him there due to his “star power”. Who will be his next NBA target? Carmelo?

by ispartan on Sep 13, 2010 10:35 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

the Lebron angle...

I tend to think that Lebron stabbed Jay Z in the back by not informing him that he was going to Miami ahead of time, but then again maybe he did if Prokhorov knew what was going to happen.

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

MrDollarBills

I think Bron was coming here, but something changed his mind in the final day or two. Maybe it was when we couldn’t get Boozer, maybe he really didn’t make up his mind until after he spoke to his mom the morning of ‘’The Decision’‘, or maybe he told Jay to get a Melo or CP3, and then he’ll be here. As i’ve always said: if he’s so happy with Miami, why’d he put an opt out in his contract? Jay knew this all along. Jay probably didn’t say anything so he wouldn’t look like a blubbering idiot.

by lupojohn3 on Sep 13, 2010 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

i don’t know about that but given all the hoopla I would have to say there was NO chance Lebron was coming to any other team, especially NJ, other than Miami.

Bey is.....

Hopefully Bey will bless us in Newark with her presence courtside for a few games.

is gona do wonders for us when we come to brooklyn…… but you prob wont see him a lot until then…..

in terms of soccer…. thats a great investment….cuz their fans are loyal and crazy… a winning combination…..

by blazin pp face on Sep 13, 2010 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

Nope the reason you did not see Jay-Z courtside last season is because we sucked! That would have tarnished his “image” seeing losers every night with no star power on the court.

LETS GO NETS!

by JustinNJ on Sep 13, 2010 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re right. Wonders as in you-know-who when he opts out. The key is to improve the young core we have, and get either Melo or CP3. Bron and Melo or CP3 will be unbeatable.

by lupojohn3 on Sep 13, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Manchester United

….is actually owned by Americans, the Glazer Family (same family that owns the Tampa Bay Bucs). Chelsea is the football club owned by a Russian Oligarch (Roman Abromovich). He’s over the top with his extravagance….he’s like Donald Trump to Proky’s Warren Buffet.

Interesting thing about Arsenal (which is the team that I support) is that they are publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange, so there’s nothing stopping Jay from making an investment right now…..however, the rumors are that Stan Kronke is going to buy the majority stake and take the team private.

by corey447 on Sep 13, 2010 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

i disagree

there is no sign that Stan Kroenke is going to take them private in the short or medium term. Especially now that Kroenke has purchased the St Louis Rams but is having to pay over two years. I think Kroenke would be an excellent owner for Arsenal but to say he is going to take them private is mis-informed.

Gah not Arsenal

As a proud West Ham United fan I despise the likes of Arsenal. If only he wanted to get in on a more likable football franchise.

Too bad you’re gonna be relegated. My sympathies.

by lupojohn3 on Sep 13, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Sigh

It’s a little early but being the only team left without a single point is not a good sign. Maybe if they didnt have a manager who had the personality of a stone things would be better.

by onegallant on Sep 14, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I am a London based Arsenal fan as well as a Nets Fan

I go to the Arsenal home games when they have tickets on general sale but each game is a 60,000 sell out. Arsenal are known to play the most attractive style of football (soccer) and at times it can be balletic.

The ownership of Arsenal is fractured at the moment and there is no overall owner but there are two main stakeholders Stan Kroenke and Alisher Usmanov both own under 29.9% of the club which is what is needed to make an overall bid for Arsenal. There are a number of smaller shareholders.

Net Income i believe it is possible for Jay Z to become a major investor in the club as Lady Bracewell-Smith is looking at divesting of her 15.9% stake in the club and has been looking for a buyer since April with private equity firm Blackstone advising her.

by Yi Of Little Faith on Sep 13, 2010 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

lol "balletic"

Spoken like a true fan.

Unfortunately Chelsea is the best.

by eLonepb on Sep 13, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Jay-Z is not rich enough

To own a major stake of Arsenal. The latest Forbes ranking valued Arsenal at $1.18 billion (the 8th richest sports team in the world). On that basis, Lady Bracewell Smith’s stake in the club (15.9%) is worth $187,620,000 million. I’m not Jay’s accountant, but I’m pretty sure he does not have the disposable income to make that sort of investment (or even to lead a group that would make that sort of investment). It’s probably more likely that he would make a token investment and serve as a high profile celebrity investor (Arsenal already have plenty of those).

by corey447 on Sep 13, 2010 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

I'd take it

He’s the wealthiest in his music genre, which is nothing but an over-inflated sense of worth.

It’s known that while Jay-Z may rule the world, his wife is actually the bread winner.

by eLonepb on Sep 14, 2010 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

if i were him, and obviously i dont come close to what Jay z is, i would have gotten a larger share of the Nets, if possible

by NetsMets4Life on Sep 13, 2010 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

I remember posting a FanPost(which was sadly taken down) saying that Jay wanted to have more input, and make more decisions, and the few responses I got were that of laughter and mockery. Well……..how about now? Hey, no one’s saying the guy knows a lot about basketball, but, let’s be honest: The guy does seem to want to learn how to operate like a real NBA owner(even if it is minority). He seems very eager. Don’t forget that the moment a free agent comes to us(cough Bron when we arrive in Brooklyn cough), he’ll get all the credit. Sure, Prokhorov has the money, the charisma, etc., but Jay has the connections to provide evverything else. One thing no one talks about is that the new arena in Brooklyn will be named THE BARCLAYS CENTER. The name of the league that Arsenal play in is THE BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE. This could wind up working out for Jay, the Nets, and anyone else involved.
