Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

WHY you dont trade Brook Lopez.

As much of you have, many "experts" are finding many statistical reasons why you shouldn't trade our beloved center. But the proof is much more simple than that. One needs only to look at our franchise's successful NBA history. 2002 Finals reaching  roster : J. Kidd, Kittles, Van Horn, K. Mart, And the great white bum MacCulloch: Lost to LA in 4 mostly because Shaq completely abused our big men. The following year we added Dikembe Mutombo but he was useless after he injured his hand. Needless to say J. Collins allowed Tim Duncan to do whatever he wanted resulting in us losing to the Spurs in 6. In fact Duncan even had two of the best games ever in finals' history,  look up the numbers. Yes, one can argue that Shaq and Timmy were atop their games those years but maybe just maybe if we had a solid big, K. Mart was in constant foul trouble, we could have won a championship. B-Lo is that big. In matter of fact, B-Lopez is "like" a million times better than a solid big. If management was really smart and dedicated to us, the faithful fanbase, they would look at what we have seen recently and decide that aquiring Anthony i n any package that includes Lopez is NO BUENO.....

Great?

No perhaps the simplest reason is because he’s an elite center while being very young.

World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.

Both Melo and Lopez are players

I agree. i am a HUGE lopez fan and hope we keep him. Is he a franchise player? not yeat, maybe a couple years down the road. Is he the perfect Wade to a leBron, you betchya. If we added a Carmelo Anthony, a Kevin Durant, A LeBron james you have jsut teamed up on of the deadliest combos in the league.

Top 4 centers in the league;
1 Dwight Howard
Best supporting player: Jameer Nelson
2 Andrew Bogut
Bes supporting player: Jennigns/ Magatee
3. BROOK LOPEZ
Best supporting player: Devin Harris

Of all the supporters, we have by far the best. Now, if you look at it closely, you see no supporting player is BETTER than the center himself. Obviously this is very hard to do and that player can no longer be called supporting, rather co existing, and adding Melo does this for us.

Suddenly Brook Lopez, a top center becomes a huge asset, bigger than he is now.
A. He draws doubles and gets attention. Opens up Melo for penetration.
B. Pick and role with Melo and Lopez easily becomes the hardest to guard in the East. (Kobe/Gasol is obviously better)
C. The pick and pop game becomes deadly with Murphy, Outlaw, getting picks and morrow running around screens.

Think about it , dEvin Harris is about to become your 3rd best player, if we can lock up Melo. Their new GM seems stupid. He eitehr wants to much or is trying ot keep melo for one year. Thats so dumb. trade him or sign the extention he wont do either. He will hopefully join Brooklyn as a FA and assemble a trio as hard to come by in the league as any.

You forgot number 4 (or 5 or 6, whatever)…

Bynum.

Best supporting player Kobe and Gasol.

Yes. But leaving Bynum out makes your argument a little bit more “convincing”.

Last year, per 36 minutes comparison:

Lopez: 18.3 pts, 8.4 rbs, 1.7 bks at 50% FG
Bynum 17.8, 9.9 rbs, 1.7 blks at 57% FG.
Bogut 17.7 pts, 11.3 rbs, 2.8 blks at 52% FG
Howard: 19.0 pts, rbs 13.7, 2.9 blks at 61% FG

We’ll see this year. If he was playing with Kobe and Gasol he also would never have a play run for him.

Also you might want to consider that under the vision of Lopez suddenly being freed up by all the shooters around him, he has to be able to pass the ball smoothly out of the post and not force shots up himself. He is not an adept passer out of the post, and if you aren’t the double teams are going to keep on coming hard. Teams will only stop falling off to him if he is able and willing to hit shooters in stride. Thus far passing is not really a strength. He can learn, but it also can’t be assumed.

When you add a player like melo

everyone instantly gets better Harris when healthy averaged 21.5ppg and 7.0apg about with a rookie Lopez and 32 year old Carter imagine what he can do with a 26 year old Carmelo Top 3 SM and Lopez now Top 3 Centeryou can ask any fan, GM or NBA analyst they would rather have Anthony, Harris and Lopez than Harris, T-Wll, Murphy and Lopez period.

agreed

would never argue such a point

I’m not a big fan, largely in part to the crowning he has received after not really deserving it. I have him as the 7th best in the league.

STILL… keep him, but I wont be heartbroken if its a good deal.

You are a Nets fan and aren’t a big fan of Brook Lopez? How can you not be? As mentioned in the post we haven’t had a solid big man in years and you need one to win. Lopez is easily a top tier center and is only getting better. Not sure what there isn’t to like.

I dont like the fact that he takes forced shots and doesn’t rebound. Yes its good that he is in the top 10 in the entire league even though those 2 things, but I get very frustrated watching him throw away possessions and not get his 7 foot a$$ in the paint for more boards.

I hate the fact that he is basically immune to any criticism by Nets fans just because he is one of the best centers. HE SHOULD BE BETTER! HE COULD BE BETTER!

by Tim823 on Sep 2, 2010 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Who said he was immune to criticism? Obviously he isn’t Shaq in his prime, Duncan, etc…but he is still very good and is only going to get better, he has only been in the league for two years! You said he “doesn’t rebound,” that statement is completely false. While he might not be Dennis Rodman he still ranks third among NBA centers for offensive rebounds per game! (top 5 or 6 among centers for total rebounds per game). He also ranks 5th among centers for blocks per game. Plus, he will score close to 20 ppg. Those are damn good numbers for a young center in this league. This year we are going to surround him with better players, this takes some pressure off Brook and should make him a better player. As a Nets fan you should realize how lucky we are to have an upper echelon big man.

It is amazing that he was able to get so many offensive rebounds with the Nets being one of the best shooting teams in the league.

Of course I am a Brook Lopez fan. I’m saying that we shouldn’t even consider trading him.

Honestly, I would not include B-Lo in a trade for anyone except for Durant, Kobe, Lebron, Wade, or Howard. He is untouchable and nobody is going to convince me that a top tier, talented young center is worth including a package deal for Carmelo.

I would not trade Brook, Favors, or Harris, or even try to keep TWill and showcase D James a little to make him more of an enticing center piece to the trade with expiring contracts like Murphy, and Ross. The draft picks will add to the flavor of the trade. Imagine if the nets pulled this off, they would have a starting line up of Harris, Morrow, Anthony, Favors, Lopez and TWill coming off the bench. That sounds like it would be a tough team to beat. Whether it can happen i dont know, maybe throw TWill in the mix if you have to, still a good line up because we would have Outlaw as our sixth man

by Benl1 on Sep 2, 2010 9:15 AM EDT reply actions

the only problem i have with this reasoning

looking at 2 finals appearances in a negative light because we lost. yeah shaq abused jason collins, but we made 2 finals with jason collins as our starting 5. for me, that shows that you want your elite players in positions that handle the ball. you can get away with a role player in the 5 spot.

imagine something extremely witty here

by Gminski on Sep 2, 2010 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

the east had NO relevant bigs during that time. right now you have dwight howard in orlando. boston has nobody dominant but they are stacked with bodies. even if you get out of the east, you have to go against bynum and gasol.

an easier way to look at it is this: the best center in the league is almost always on one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the league, and any team trying to win a title is eventually going to have to beat that team.
