Christmas Comes 10 Days Early
On December 15th.
The best scenario for NJ is if Denver is willing to wait until then to trade Melo so that our free agent signings could be included. If so, then I would be willing to trade Favors since Outlaw could be moved as well. Outlaw could be worthless with Melo, seeing limited minutes off the bench for $7m. Assuming we start him until Dec. 15th he could build up his value, and prove he was a not a complete overpay.
Two trades could theoretically happen to revolutionize our team.
Trade 1 with Denver:
Outlaw / Favors / J.Hayes / 2011 #1 / 2 2nd rounders / $3m Cash
for
Melo + Balkman
Trade 2 with NOH:
Harris / T.Williams / 2012 GS #1 / 2 2nd rounders / $3m Cash
for
Paul
When 2011 comes around, they would be over the cap with Melo's extension, but be able to resign their own free agents (such as Murphy) and have the MLE to use.
2011-2012 NJ Nets
Paul / Farmar / Uzoh
MLE / Morrow
Melo / D.James / Balkman
Murphy / Humphries
Lopez / Petro / Zoubek
Add an MLE player like C.Brewer, M.Pietrus, Afflalo, or even AK (someone who plays defense) and we're good to go.
Ok... I'll stop obsessing now.

will this work?
DH+Outlaw+Hump+picsk/cash for Melo. so we’ll have:
JF/TWill/Uzoh
Morrow/DJ or Ross (if DJ can’t play 2)
Melo/Ross or DJ/Hayes
Murphy/Favors/May
Brook/Petro/Zoubek
I knew exactly what 10 days before Christmas meant and I agree.
I would prefer waiting to Dec 15 too.
I am optimistic that the Nets players’ value will only go up by then, especially Outlaw, DJames, TWill and Harris.
I’m not as confident about Favors and Petro (Denver fans don’t want to see him back).
Nets DO have the rights to use Jarvis Hayes in a trade, according to DaveD and Net Income.
I’m not sure, however, if they can sign him up to the salary cap limit (4.2 million at this time, but could drop to around 2.6 million once the season begins (if Nets retain May, Uzoh and Zoubec).
Nets would need to move 17.15 x 0.75 = $12.86 million to get Melo straight up.
12.86 – 4.13 (Favors) – 7 (Outlaw) leaves $1.73, which could be covered by Jarvis Hayes (or Hump at 3.2 million).
Not sure if Denver is seeking to move Balkman and his 3 year (@ 5 million) contract?
Everything would depend on whether Denver feels that Favors is the best player who is available to him. Maybe they will also want to wait until the beginning of the season to get a closer look at Favors.
If Favors is Denver’s preference, then they should be willing to wait, while they get some wins out of Melo.
I doubt that right now Denver would be so anxious to make a deal for TWill+DJames and I don’t want to throw in Murphy just to make salaries match.
