Breakout Season for TWill?

There's another All-Breakout List out Monday and like most such lists this summer, Terrence Williams is on it.  It helps to finish the season with an electrifying 14-7-7 final month...and Rookie of the Month honors.

And, as HoopWorld points out, the Nets appear ready to give Williams the opportunity for that breakout, trading away Chris Douglas-Roberts and Courtney Lee. That leaves a lot more minutes for Williams, who will now contend with Anthony Morrow and Quinton Ross at SG and Devin Harris and Jordan Farmar at PG.

TWILL

How will AJ use TWILL? Well, it depends. Did you hear about the senior citizens smuggling dope, you know where they were hiding the stuff? It depends! Sorry about the bad joke….I have a terrible tooth ache, and have been doped up all weekend. ANYWAY, TWILL’s playing time will depend on whether he is knocking down his jumpers. We can’t have teams laying off TWILL. He better be in the gym, shooting 400 jumpers every day between now and camp, instead of Tweeting. Yes, I wish the season would start already. Watched some USA basketball over the weekend…Durant is certainly a wonderful player. GO USA! GO NETS! GO TO THE DENTIST!

Earlier version of that joke....

thinking he’s smart a young Reporter asks President Regan “boxers or briefs?”. Regan winks at him and says “depends”.

but...

I agree but he is the person most likely to be traded for Anthony.

TWill is gonna be a beast, just wait and you’ll see.

Out of Brigham’s list, I love Holiday and Millsap. Thorn has some serious young talent in Philly. Holiday, Turner, Iguodala (even if he’s overpaid), even Hawes… I don’t like Young and Speights tho. At all.

Williams is primed for a breakout

he has the skills to do so. All that matters is that he keeps his head up, keeps himself under control, and responds to Avery pushing him with harder play and determination(and Avery WILL push him to get the best out of him).

Deadly first step, solid ball handling skills, can jump out of the building, can dish the rock, and rebounding. He just needs to add some better decision making, focus on defense, and learning to finish strong at the basket instead of throwing up floaters and I predict big things for him…either here, or Denver. I’ll be fine either way.

With Terrence, one must assume that “maturity” is tops on his “to do list”

well this is Twill second year

how long have people been waiting for Carmelo Anthony to mature??

Hey maybe I’m wrong. Maybe homie is mature and threating groupies with a 5,000 hit is a perfect example.

LOL so true...

DWI, fighting at MSG, “stop snitchin”, marijuana possession… And now twitter threats. But no, TWill’s the one with maturity issues. Some people only see what they wanna see…

In before eLone makes comments to the effect of “So what, he’s a trouble maker, you don’t see the Lakers complaining about Kobe’s rape allegations!”

To me, TWill needs to develop

a feel for the NBA game. Right now, we know he’s really good at playing street ball. Can he master specifically the NBA game, though?

Nets = Global
Knicks = Local

by BigTom on Aug 31, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

your street ball analysis is so off base Tom

During the end of the season, Williams started developing his NBA niche.

I am still perplexed about the street ball label you’re putting on Williams…maybe you should explain that one a little better.

For one thing….streetballers don’t like to pass. We can start there.

People can bash Kiki all they want

but our draft choices improved dramatically under him.

I find it unbelievable that we landed Lopez and Williams with the number 10 and 11 picks. OK, people can say Brook fell into our lap, but you have to give Kiki the credit he deserves for taking TWill at 11.

by Andres B on Aug 30, 2010 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

true

and the best part is, King has a solid track record for drafting talent…there will be no drop off in that department.

Most of the Nets fans here wanted TWill, so he just did want we wanted and he didn't screw things up.

Taking SWill was another story. That was a risk. I had wanted Big Baby, as a safer pick, but after seeing the SWill shot blocking highlights it seemed worth a chance. Little did we know, that was all he did well.

by jerry25 on Aug 30, 2010 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

And he only did that well for one season

afterwards, the dude was just useless for the most part.

SWILL...

would have been a totally different player under Avery……..That crappy little coach that we used to have completely crushed his confidence…..

Naw I your to see him all the time in Jersey

He just to small to play PF doesn’t have the game to play SF, was kind of doomed from the beginning.

If he is still in a Nets uni

He’ll most likely be my Fav Net to watch

by nwkiddnj on Aug 30, 2010 9:32 AM EDT reply actions

Judging from his twitter alone, he is going to come out this season on fire. Always talks about working hard to prove things to people, how he is blessed to be a Net, etc. He just seems to love the game, and that showed last year, always having a smile on his face even though we were terrible. He even said he would do the dunk contest!

I like this guy, I want him around.

by Tim823 on Aug 30, 2010 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

That’s why I don’t want to trade him. Also I see him winning a Dunk Competition in the future which = more attention to the Nets

by Scooby803 on Aug 30, 2010 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

oh yeah

I wish the dunk competition could go back to how it used to be where players wanted to go into the competition … I would love to see Twill’s creativity

There aren't....

any players on the Nets right now that I would really want to part with……I’m not saying that I don’t want Anthony , I’m just saying that I love this team as it is now…….There are quite a few players on this team who may have breakout years this season……If a few do , we have a chance at a championship……Like Al Green said….“Let’s Stay Together”……

by NetFan48 on Aug 30, 2010 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

u right

we pretty much put a whole new team together over the off-season and I think all of the players are motivated to do alot better than 12-70

by trippy on Aug 31, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah..

i think T-Will and James will be huge.. let’s just wait ’til deadline and see..

by njason21 on Aug 31, 2010 5:29 AM EDT reply actions

Just potential

It’s a new NETS team, and the key here is Avery’s coaching. It’s obvious for me that T Will and Harris will alternate in making plays. Avery should recognize weakness in defense of opposing players guarding the two PG, and where the weakess is then the task of playmaking will be assigned. Both Devin and Terrence have different styles , both can make plays with Devin harder to contain as he has shown in the past. So it depends.
I would see early in the season both Devin and Terrence numbers will not be that great or consistent. But on those days the only reason why they will not have great numbers is because the Post up play of Brooks with Murphy and Outlaw as outside shooting threat is either working or not. I believe this is the most important thing that needs to develope. If not we will use other options like Morrow and James oustide shooting and Favors to come in and provide energy. But this option is still WIP, maybe at least two months before we can realize the benefits. But my doubts are great cause the first two months we will be playing away and a lot of them are in the WEST. so it’s imprtant we play good at home and win more games. Our shooters should have the advantage like Morrow, Outlaw and Murphy.
In defense , I would like to see both Brooks and Outlaw manning the shaded area and offer help defense in screen/penetration with Murphy helping in getting rebounds. Murphy will be the weakest link, but his size could offer some intimidation, and that’s all. I wish he would use his fouls efficiently, and if he gets int foul trouble then that will give Favors more playing time. Terrence most likely we will see how his defense holds up with elite SG or PG. Terrence is the player with a lot of basketball sense left to defend the likes of Wade, Lebron, Ray Allen or Pierce, Kobe, Carter, Johnsn, Iguodola etc. The rest of the NETS are new and mismatch is more obvious. Terrence athletic ability should be enough to somehow suppress their offense, if not Farmar and Ross will be the other choice which makes the NETS weaker either in defense or offense.

Only in Nets land

Are the high praises for Twill falling on deaf ears. I can’t even remember how many announcers / former players / analysts were drooling over TWill, his abilities, his potential and what he brings to the game.

Everyone seemed to agree that if he ‘develops a jumpshot, it’s OVER!’

by adronaline on Aug 31, 2010 8:35 AM EDT reply actions   2 recs

I believe....

that this team we have now w/Avery will develop a fine chemistry together….There will be Help Defense and Offensive Rebounds all over the place…..I like Murphy but CLEE also would have fit right in here……And it seemed like TWILL’s shot was coming on a bit last season so I feel that he will develop that shot and be a star player , as good as if not better than Anthony…………..And easier to coach…..

CLee

didn’t want to be here.

Summer league...

did anyone watch the summer league Twill was all over the place… he was waaay more aggressive but still turn over prone. between him and James I think they had the most during the summer league…. However if you did watch the summer league games you would have noticed that Twill must have been working on his game cause he was waaay better than what he showed us last season…He’s got HUGE potential and is quickly becoming one of my favorite players
