Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Billy King said last week he was going on vacation but will be carrying his cell phone.

It now appears to be a working vacation. He was spotted Saturday entering Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul with USA Basketball President Jerry Colangelo. King has worked with USA Basketball since 1987 when he played for Team USA at the World University Games.

No word on if he's scouting anyone while in Turkey. Team USA plays Slovenia at 9:30 a.m. ET Sunday.

not worth it to put a Nets uni on him again

I wonder if Billy King is talking Turkey...

"should we have given up on Yi?"

of course not, he was a promising young bench PF. It was just those “Kiki” tattoos that made him persona non grata (potato non gratin?)

Yi played well last summer too

and look what happened.

ricky rubio in the NYTimes

regardless of what happens with Melo – the Nets need to target Rubio who i doubt will ever put on a TWolves jersey – 19 years old and can play impressive D while throwing some dazzling passes. We need him in Brooklyn

we need rubio

he will be the best pg in the nba. he would be top 3 this year.

you’re joking right?

lol

Rubio throwing dazzling passes smh that would not go down in the NBA or on Averys team.

Yi has been putting up monster numbers, but let’s not go crazy, he was facing Cote d’Ivoire today…

I wish him well in DC, but he was a disappointment here and we replaced him with a proven veteran who gives us all Yi was supposed to but couldn’t…

by Andres B on Aug 29, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

well said Andres…

Yi has been a disappointment and so he time here had to end…

we couldve gotten more value from him in a trade. But whatever nets were desperate. Nets shouldve waited until the worlds to trade him..

yeah

I think that if we had waited and were willing to package him with other assets (cap space, picks), we could have gotten more value, but they wanted to clear more cap space, so…

by Andres B on Aug 29, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

we had to include 3 million dollars just for the Wizards to take him off of our hands

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

by MrDollarBills on Aug 29, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

again, that had to do with timing

the deal took place the day before free agency and the Nets were desperate to get to a point where they would have enough space for two max free agents, which in hindsight (and in some people’s opinions back then) was a fool’s errand.

The Wizards could have charged whatever they wanted.

by Net Income on Aug 29, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

it was a fool's errand

But at the end of the day, Yi wasn’t worth keeping around. I don’t think a good showing in the world’s would have guaranteed that someone would have been willing to give up a first rd pick for him.

He’s a good kid, but he is injury prone and soft. If another team gets a better showing out of him, good for him and them, but I really didn’t see any reason for the Nets to waste their time with him anymore.

Agreed, +1

Yi was a waste of space. Cap space.

And I still think if we let Cap Space wear a uniform, he’d be a better defender than Yi ever was.

by eLonepb on Aug 29, 2010 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a fool's errand, period

and if they had waited, they would have a better trade asset.

It doesn’t matter one iota what people here thought of him. It’s about getting value.

By my calculations, there is nothing the Nets have done since he was traded that they couldn’t have done with him on the roster.

They picked up a net of $2.91 million in cap space. BFD.

by Net Income on Aug 29, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you NI, you're right.

but at the end of the day, meh, it is what it is. We were duped into believing that we had a legit shot at Lebron and we did what we had to do. I’ll live with losing a possible trade chip in Yi over doing something even more rash.

It doesn’t matter one iota what people here thought of him

that should include you.

Nets had to pay $3M to get a team take Yi off their hands, period, his trade value was that low, I doubt him putting up big numbers against a power house like Ivory Coast would have changed it that much.

by Andres B on Aug 30, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yi has zero season-long stamina

Notice that the guy always looks good with a long rest lead-in. But after a stretch of games, he breaks down — both physically and numbers-wise. There’s no two ways about this. He is not built for the NBA slog of a grueling season + playoffs. He’s not an NBA player. A physical specimen? Yes. Built for the NBA in terms of surviving the war of attrition that is 100 games that a championship team’s schedule requires? Not at all.

Nets = Global
Knicks = Local

We won't regret getting rid of Yi.

1. China doesn’t have bad feelings, because he was effectively traded in the name of LeBron (save’s face).
2. If Yi was still on team, Nets would might not have gone ahead with getting Troy Murphy, but they would have had to deal with the embarrassment of not extending his contract.
3. Yi looked awful playing against Puerto Rico earlier – same clumsy hands.
4. I hope he looks good to Wiz and gets lots of PT there. That way Wiz may not make the playoffs with his porous Defense and non-team offense. I would like to see Murphy, Outlaw and Lopez scoring on Yi this year. Wiz were tough last year with Yi playing. Now “the shoe is on the other foot”.

by jerry25 on Aug 29, 2010 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yi looked horrible against USA

He put up big numbers last year Yi is a tease, we saw him long enough no point in keeping him, we had a leaky roof we need more solid peaces to close the hole.

by Atronic on Aug 29, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I didnt like the Yi trade

and right now, it looks a lot worse. His value now is a lot higher than it was on June 30. The only reason to trade him was for cap space. I believe Murphy and Favors will be better at PF than him, but you might have gotten more in terms of picks now than you could have then. No offense to Quinton Ross, but I’d rather have another pick.

by Net Income on Aug 29, 2010 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

exactly

if we got a first round pick for marcus wiliams…

we couldve gotten one for yi…easy

I love the Marcus Williams trade(s)

To get a first round pick, protected 1-7, and a second round pick for a guy who was cut before the revised deal was done, was masterful…particularly since Williams is now playing in SIBERIA. Told that was Bobby Marks’ handiwork, by the way.

by Net Income on Aug 29, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree maybe should have waited

But we got caught up in the Lebron thing like everyone else.

by Atronic on Aug 29, 2010 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

which was a shame

the Nets, as reports indicated afterwards, were never really in it.

Correction

by eLonepb on Aug 29, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Cavs were in it.

Thorn said today that he was shocked that LeBron went to the Heat.

Prokhorov, on the other hand, figured it right.

I think I flagged you by mistake

But I would be surprised if Clev was really in all honesty an option.

i think nobody where. it was all a farce

by atec on Aug 29, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh, I don't care

The faster Yi was out of here the better.

Besides, I think “cap space” will do a better job at defending that Yi ever did.

by eLonepb on Aug 29, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Mickael Gelabale

former second round pick of the Sonics is apparently the player (at least so far) who has attracted the most interest among NBA teams at the Worlds.

6’7" leaper who played two years for the Sonics, then blew out his knee. One of the last cuts of the Lakers last year. He played well for France vs. Spain the other night and again today vs. Lebanon.

He is under contract with a French team but his agent has told people he can get out of it easily.

by Net Income on Aug 29, 2010 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

For those who care...

Timmy Mozgov is not lighting up the FIBA Worlds.

In 32 minutes over two games, he has 14 points, 4 rebounds and 6 personals.

If D’antoni is smart, he will start Amare at center, Randolph at PF and Gallinari at SF and forget starting either Mozgov or Turiaf at center. Amare might not like it…but I find the Knicks roster upfront very underwhelming

by Net Income on Aug 29, 2010 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

i agree…amar’e at center

their roster is overrated, PERIOD.

I am telling you, the team we have right now would beat the brakes off of that group.

Agreed. Randolph has a hard time staying on the court cause he tries to block every shot in the lane. The knicks are going to have problems with rebounding this year. They are going to miss Lee. Their sg position is weak also. azubuike is still healing from a knee injury and Masonjr is nothing to worry about.
