ESPN: Nets No Better than 25th

In the first installment of its "Summer Buzz", ESPN Insider predicts the Nets will wind up the season as the NBA's 25th best team, just ahead of the Wizards, Pacers, Raptors, Pistons and the lowly Timberwolves.

There's little new in the analysis by Ric Bucher and John Hollinger. Avery Johnson "will whip the talented but young Nets into shape". Free agency "was a failure, pure and simple."  Derrick Favors has "has a world of potential". Travis Outlaw is a good addition but "overpaid".  They're "stuck in sort of a limbo" in Newark for two years and if delays in Brooklyn "certainly cost the Nets a legitimate shot" at LeBron James.  Overall, the franchise is "still largely regarded as backward".  Last year, the 25th best team, the 76ers, won 27 games.

I really think the "Outlaw is overpaid" talks is already too old for us nets fans..

two points

1) Outlaw essentially got the MLE. Nets don’t have the MLE because they are under the cap, but a five year MLE contract works out to a bit more than $34 million. Based on what he did the the two years before he broke his foot, he would have gotten the MLE from someone. Drew Gooden did, Amir Johnson did.

2) No one can say he is over or underpaid right now. It’s someone’s opinion.

by Net Income on Aug 24, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

If Outlaw plays well for us the next 5 years...

The contract will be a bargain…How much money were we paying Simmons and Battie last year for doing nothing?

by M I K E on Aug 24, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

The Outlaw overpaid talk is NONSENSE.

Avery Johnson felt that Outlaw was the 3rd best FA SF after LeBron and RGay.
When you target a specific player, you Have to pay a little more (more years) to sign that player.

Avery knows much more than we do about the pre-injury Outlaw and how well he would work within his system.
If Avery is correct, then getting those extra 2 years for only a flat 7 million per year, may end up being cheap.

And Outlaw could be an easy contract to move – should Nets pick up someone like Melo or if DJames becomes a star.
Once the season begins all this overpaid talk by people like Broussard should end.

So that means they put Cleveland ahead of us? They are gonna be terrible. Also, I don’t think we’re worse than NY, Charlote or Philly. Not saying we’ll necessarily finish ahead of all those teams, but we certainly can compete against them for one of the last two playoffs spots, IMO.

The Raptors are gonna be god awful. I’ll be surprised if they win 20 games. Pistons will be better than them, no doubt in my mind.

They are right

We are about 25th. What do we have? We have no go-to scorer at all… just some guys we hope get better. That’s great for the rebuilding process, but we are not a playoff team in my eyes.

We’ve got some great pieces, but we are a long way away from being competitive.

could have a go to scorer

could be Harris, who did have games of 47, 41, 39, 38 and 38 the year before last. could be Lopez, who did have games of 37, 32 and 31 last year.

This year he’ll have people that can sink a shot from the outside, as well as Murphy and Favors on the inside. This year’s team is gonna keep defenses spread out- they won’t be able to double up on Harris and Lopez and effectively shut down our offense.

Every Single Contract Player on the Nets is Better than the Team they had Last Season.

Someone should do the comparison.
Harris for example will be MUCH better than last year.

Farmer and Dooling would be a close comparison, but Dooling was playing injured.
Hump may not contribute as much as he did last year, but at least he will be available for the full year for 10-11, so I give the advantage to this season.

Comparing the PF position from 09-10 to this season is a JOKE. Murphy, Favors, Hump, May vs. Yi + trash!

TWill will be much better.

SF is much better.

Petro > Boone for Center position.

The Bench is much better than last season with TWill, Favors, Farmar and DJames.

I don’t think there ever has been a team that is better (13 deep) for every player over the previous season.
That alone is a strong enough case for Nets to make the playoffs

by jerry25 on Aug 24, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Nets have about 8 players capable of scoring 15 if given enough minutes and if Avery wanted the scoring.

Offense won’t be a problem.

What Nets need is some time to work together and to be healthy (especially Harris and Lopez).

The SG position is the biggest uncertainty. If Morrow works well with Harris, and TWill can lead the 2nd unit, Nets will be a winning team.

by jerry25 on Aug 24, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

imo

interior defense is the biggest concern

Can Avery come up with a type of team defense that can disguise the shortcomings downlow defensively?

If our team defense is tight, we are going to give a lot of teams a rude surprise if they want to come in here and think that this is the same 12-70 Nets.

And what would anyone expect? Who would pick them higher? Why? Based on their terrific free agency pick ups? Based on a PF who is not ready for the NBA and has high aspirations of being a spark off the bench? Based on the often injured Dharris? Based on our go to guy, travis outlaw. This year will not be a 12 win season. We will be competitive, but under talented, and as good as Brook is, they will expose him defensively and they will expose his inexperience. 30 wins is about right.

The Nets picked up some nice players this summer...

Go to guy? Travis Outlaw was known as “Mr. 4th Quarter” when playing with decent Portland teams.

Favors never said he was looking to be only a “spark off the bench”. He was asked what he thought his role might be to start the season. He answered with a humble, simple, statement that some people are making it out to be a sign of low aspirations, weakness and surrender in Favors character.

Devin Harris should be much better then last year and Brook now has more help through out the line up.

If only 1/2 of our newly acquired players pan out we should be able to contend for a playoff spot.

Murphy and Outlaw at PF and SF are veterans who know how to play. Look at who we had playing PF and SF last year. All we need is 2 out of the following players to emerge and we should have a decent rotation. We should be able to find those 2 players from a group that will consist of, T-Will, Morrow, Favors, James, Farmar, Petro etc. I think at least 2 of those players from that group will step up.

You can wait for your superstar to join us… Meanwhile I will go into battle with these guys.

by eLonepb on Aug 24, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Making the playoffs with 41 wins is NOT putting us "over the top". It is a Humble goal.

People forget that Chicago Stunk at times last year (lost to Nets 2 x) but still managed to finish strong and make the playoffs.
It was considered a bad year for Chicago, yet after a competitive 1st round showing, most people now have forgotten how bad Chicago was at times.

Had Chicago missed the playoffs, perhaps Boozer doesn’t sign with them and the media declares the Bulls as a total failure.

Making the Playoffs is a MANDATE from Proky and The Little General approves of those orders from the Commander In Chief.

by jerry25 on Aug 24, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you to a point

We have some solid pieces, but we are missing that one guy, preferably at SF. Which is why the stuff about not wanting Carmelo is dumb, IMO, as long as we don’t lose our frontcourt in the process.

And yeah, the stuff trying to toss Favors under the bus for giving a humble, realistic answer is stupid. Gotta call it like it is in this place.

Why can't we just green light Outlaw or Morrow and Brook

Tell 2 guys that they need to put up 25 shots a night every night and i bet you we have 2 allstars. Melo shoots it at 45% for his career and shoots alot. You give alot of guys the greenlight and they wll produce as well. We don’t need to trade for someone we just need to allow the opportunity to some of these guys. I nominate Outlaw, Morrow and Brook. When they re in the game they need to score. Everyone else needs to play off of them. Devin included.

Murphy is a double-double machine and shoots the ball extremely well… he may be a lousy defender, but we have Favors for that…

check this out:
http://www.opposingviews.com/i/will-indiana-pacers-make-2010-11-playoffs

Those who are familiar with The Wages of Wins and Wins Produced are generally the fans who appreciate and recognize Murphy’s worth to a team. Murphy was among the most productive front court players in the league last season, posting a WP48 of 0.281 and producing 13.7 Wins over the course of the season. Murphy has obvious limitations at the defensive end, but is an extremely efficient scorer and a very strong rebounder. Murphy scored 1.10 Point Per Shot last season and grabbed 15.1 Reb/48. His 28.1% Defensive Rebound Rate over the past three seasons was bested by only Carlos Boozer, Dwight Howard, Joel Pryzbilla and Marcus Camby. Replacing him is going to be no small task.

There is NO such thing as a perfect team, why Nets fans have this belief that we’ll have to have studs at every spot on the roster from 1-15 is baffling.

They never say they hate the Prudential Center. They just get a kick out of using the Newark name to put down the Nets.

They even call the team the Newark Nets when they want to get a good laugh from their audience. The media, especially ESPN, assume that there are so few Nets fans, that they can afford to make fun.

I have called for the team to change the name to the New Jersey-Brooklyn Nets until they actually move – but apparently there isn’t time. Maybe they can unofficially change the name.

If people continue to call them the Newark Nets, then the organization would be better off using the official name of the New Jersey Nets, until the move.

By no longer using the New Jersey name, Yormarket is allowing the opposition to rename the team the Newark Nets.

The Headline and Story should be corrected.

It seems that Broussard was the one writing the rankings, with Hollinger contributing to the starting lineups.
Ric Bucher isn’t listed as far as I can tell.

Hollinger predicts that TWill will start at SG. Avery has hinted (before the Murphy trade) that if Morrow works well with Harris, he could be the starter. Hollinger has it wrong again.

And why should we expect anything different from Broussard? He calls the Free Agency a Failure, Pure and Simple.
And Broussard always likes to put down Newark. Fact is that Broussard and his ESPN colleagues have probably contributed to the bad press about Newark, rather than explaining that it is a State-of-the-Art facility just miles from MSG and Central Park.

And why doesn’t Broussard explain, that had Barclays been built sooner, then Prokhorov never would have become the owner.

Broussard and Hollinger are a Joke.

by jerry25 on Aug 24, 2010 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

At least Hollinger is quatitative at times, but he doesn't consider everything and he has been lucky with Nets injuries helping his dire predictions in the past.

At least Hollinger has made a contribution to NBA with his statistics, although Executives like Jerry West said he doesn’t take them seriously when evaluating players.

Broussard says what ever comes to his mind, in order to get a story.
Sometimes its hard to know if he is reciting a conversation or just making it up based on what he thinks that person would say.
Broussard could be a borderline “pathological liar”.

Fact is that it is too early to rank the teams, and especially in the case of the Nets, any responsible person should state that there is too large of a range to predict.

He didn't play well against the Iranians last year either.

He also didn’t play well against either strong or quick power forwards.

There seems to be a pattern developing.

I can hear Avery Johnsons remarks to the team before our first game this year...

“Well guys, as you all know we didn’t land that core, stud, superstar player we all wanted, so we have no chance of winning this year. Just have fun out there, don’t get hurt and try not to be too late for practice”… “T-Will… are you snoring… nevermind”…

I hate it when they say "Hurt the Nets chances in getting Lebron"

I believe now even if the Nets got John Wall, even if the Nets were moving to Brooklyn this year, even if the Nets signed Amare/Boozer, even if the Nets got the best coach in the world………….he was never coming here!!!!!!!!

Don't listen to ESPN, who are set up to promote Superstars and don't mind trashing teams with small fan bases (less advertising revenue).
If they are going to pull numbers out of their Rear End, why not instead get the prediction form my Read End:

I make a case for 47 victories, but even a base figure of 37 cannot be denied from my estimate:

Oklahoma City?

Last time I checked, Oklahoma City was a small-market team with a new fan base. I don’t think they are even close to leading the league in advertising revenue, however, ESPN clearly supports this team. As I said earlier, they don’t pick the Nets as a team to hate. Thats like saying “I failed my class because my teacher doesn’t like me.” Sometimes the other group isn’t the problem. Sometimes the wrong ones can be fans like us. Those reporter’s jobs are to watch and analyze basketball games and report on their information. They’ve been doing this for a while, and may actually be correct.

Oklahoma City has a SUPERSTAR and a Star PG.

ESPN has promoted Kevin Durant to be the new Superstar
This proves my point.

If Durant didn’t already say how much he likes the small town environment of OK City, ESPN would be trying to trade him to a large market city.

However, they realize they have no option but to accept OK City as the hosting city for one of the NBA Superstars.
And with Westbrook and Green, ESPN is resigned to accept OK City as a contender.

Should the Nets make the playoffs, and Brook makes the All Star team and someone else like Harris, TWill of Favors appear to be Stars, they will treat the Nets the same. They will also give Nets free publicity ahead of the Brooklyn move.

In the meantime, they will trash the Nets.

The evidence that they also care about fan bases, comes directly from how much press the Knicks get vs. the Nets, even when the Nets are better.

Fine, but how come

many ESPN personalities are happy Kevin Durant is staying in OKC? I have heard Skip Baylis, Jodie Mac, Chris Brossard, and many other reporters comment on how they are happy KD didn’t make a big announcement (like LeBron) with his 3 year max contract extension. Instead he stuck to a small market team, and stayed a loyal player. All of them then admired this. Also, if you don’t want me to use OKC as an example, how about Portland? The Blazers are always featured as one of the up-and-coming teams, yet they are in a small media market, and only have Brandon Roy, a small personality, as their star. Finally, I agree that ESPN comments on the Knicks more because the Knicks have a bigger fan base. They are New York City. Therefore, you are bound to hear about them, than the Nets on 1050 or SportsCenter. However, NEVER have they bashed the Nets. Just because the Nets are a smaller market team, doesn’t mean ESPN hates us. In fact, I hear more trash talk about the Knicks past 10 years than anything else! Just because we aren’t talked about DOES NOT mean we are being “trashed”.

I say we can get 35 -36 wins this year if everyone stays healthy.

LETS GO NETS!
