Troy Murphy - Jersey Sure

Troy Murphy was at the Honolulu International Airport Tuesday, headed back home to New Jersey and the Nets, when Dave D'Alessandro caught up with him. The Sparta native said all the right things about playing for the home team, like...

"I couldn’t understand when all these free agents were looking for places to go that so many of them overlooked the Nets," and...

"There’s something special about playing for the team that you grew up watching, so you have to look forward to that. And I’m looking forward to working with Avery Johnson," and...

"I think people are definitely underestimating us, but that’s a good thing."

Murphy knows it won't be easy for the Nets and himself--he's never played in the post-season, but he's happy to give it a try. “So I‘m definitely all right with this. And we have a shot at the playoffs, so can you imagine how special that would be for me to be a part of that?”

This guy is going to be real solid assuming he stays healthy. The more I think about this move, especially in view of Lee’s recent comments, King gets an A.

Absolutely love the attitude

Really hope he sticks around for awhile.

hahaha

funny post but yea i hope murphy stays ferreal. he’s thinking just like the fans. i’m excited about this team i really am. when the nets went 52-30 in 2002 (yr j-kidd arrived) pretty much everyone still wrote us to be in last place. to me, this team has a similar feeling to that. i’ll be at some games at the rock upcoming season.

Good

Then we can see how the current team can play before contemplating giving away some talented people.

We are going to have to put up with this for another 4 months.

by jerry25 on Aug 19, 2010 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

no, we aren't

it would be nuts for Denver to draw this out.

Once he tells the Nuggets owner he will opt out next July and request a trade, things will move fast.

I expect this will be resolved long before training camp.

I was saying all along that forfeiting most of that cap space for an expiring PF (against Rod Thorn's wishes) was not such a bad thing.

The Nets may have even more of a chance of getting Melo, after signing Murphy, than before, because a S&T was always the only way to get Melo.

Now the Nets can use Murphy to help get Melo, or if they must give up Favors, they still have a decent PF, who could be re-signed for much less next summer. And if they do nothing, at least the Nets will be competitive, and King/Avery made the right decision.

Not really. Think about this: if we hadn’t taken on Troy’s contract, we could take on Melo without having to match salaries. The salary relief that would mean for Denver (esp with the luxury tx) would be huge and that would have been a tremendous asset of they were thinking about trying to land Melo.

by Andres B on Aug 19, 2010 7:15 AM EDT up reply actions

However, it appears that Melo can't be traded before Dec 15, when Outlaw et al. become available.

Nets can have a handful of extra wins by then, as as result of having Murphy, which can impact the standings later on.

Also, Murphy isn’t a dead weight like Eddy Curry. Denver has to show some wins to its fans. They could expect to re-sign Murphy for much less at end of season, when KMart becomes a FA.

It could still be Harris and Outlaw for Melo, but Denver would have to offer Ty Lawson.

Welcome Troy Murphy!

Love the attitude…. and he fits exactly what we need at the PF. Brilliant job, Billy King!

by Oligarch on Aug 18, 2010 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

Murphy and Lopez will get along just fine.

Troy will let Brook know what it’s like to hear Avery’s screeching voice.
I think Brook will get a big laugh.

Very Happy to have Murphy…

Welcome to the Nets!

Great attitude

I think he’ll be one of the best additions to any team in the NBA. I expect a double double avg from Murphy and on some nights he will be the go to guy..he can score

This is awesome. Love the guy, always have.

His nickname is “the Horse” btw.

by Tim823 on Aug 18, 2010 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

Then why is he called here, RoboCop 2k09:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx-TBYEaIoM&feature=related

Why would he want to be called “the Horse”, instead of RoboCop, with the same last name as the Officer in the movie?

Besides, my postings on NetsDaily are already being picked up by Google, thus spreading the RoboCop nickname.

by jerry25 on Aug 18, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey man, I didnt say I liked the Horse, I am just saying thats what his old nickname is. I dont even know why.

Nickname down on the bottom. Doesn’t say why. I dont think he looks like one. Or sounds like one.

by Tim823 on Aug 18, 2010 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Says all the right things

I’m sure the PR people at the Nets are thrilled he’s saying all this nice stuff. No more Courtney Lee or Chris Douglas-Roberts to worry about now. This has potential to be a GREAT pickup because it appears obvious he wants to be here, thinks they have a chance to win.

Now only if we could somehow steal that Carmelo guy for some cotton candy and a few draft picks.

by corky_romano4life on Aug 18, 2010 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

Im glad that he wants to be here.

That’s something.

Consequences will never be the same.

by NetsMets4Life on Aug 18, 2010 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

I just want to see these guys play together

Before we trade anybody at least some preseason games, I think some of these guys maybe turning a corner.

by Atronic on Aug 18, 2010 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

NI, would a Murphy extension count against the cap?

If Denver is interested in Favors for Melo… then this could work out alright.

by Paul G B on Aug 19, 2010 12:24 AM EDT reply actions

No way

no need to give up Favors I think James, T-Will and Harris plus Hump as a throw in would do if not no deal for Lawson and Melo(signed to extension).

by JJ25 on Aug 19, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I would like to do...

I like your deal for both teams. Wonder if we throw in two #1 picks and maybe a #2 could we leave out TWil.

Farmer/TWil/Carmelo/Murphy/Brook

Lawson/Morrow/Outlaw/Favors/Petro

Very good team if Avery gets them to play defense.

Benefit not discussed is Nets would own NYC and the value of the team would sky rocket.

by rundmc00 on Aug 19, 2010 12:52 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

No deal should take place before mid December anyway.

That is good news, so we can evaluate everyone but the NBA fans will have to put up with this for 4 more months!

I have a feeling that Melo will perform poorly this year, in front of his Denver fans. His value will decline.

by jerry25 on Aug 19, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

You fail to consider the other side`

That the team we have now has only won about 4 – 5 games, and is considered the worst team in the league.

Suddenly, we aren’t on Melo’s list anymore, and none of our players are as attractive to Denver.

by eLonepb on Aug 19, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Avery will have the same team in mid December as he has today. He will get them to gel.

Losing is not an option for Avery, as long as his team is healthy.

The early schedule is tough though. Avery will have to do some screeching and pulling on shirts and what not to keep the team focused.

by jerry25 on Aug 19, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

If Nets keep their core players, then I too would prefer Two #1s and any #2s.

Those draft picks wouldn’t be needed to be retained, if Nets keep their core and besides, Nets would be an Elite team real fast.

by jerry25 on Aug 19, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

1)Why, if Melo is signing a 3 year extension, would give away the players most ready to help us win now?

Melo would be here for three years, and MAYBE Melo would play with a good Favors for MAYBE one year, assuming he wouldn’t pull the same crap he’s pulling in DEN right now.

Plus, everyone talks about how Murphy will compliment Lopez cuz he can stretch the floor… that was the plan with Yi. So why try so hard to preserve a project who won’t develop for 2 years and who probably won’t compliment the best player on the team.

by Paul G B on Aug 19, 2010 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

2) Why would DEN take that deal?

Lawson has very good numbers for a backup… they would not be moving too far up with Harris, who has injury issues to boot. DEN might even see it as a lateral move. T-Will for Melo? No way they aren’t getting way better offers. The Knicks could do better.

by Paul G B on Aug 19, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

as a corollary ...

why would Melo allow Denver to gut the Knicks? As you stated in #1.
And why would Denver make the trade if they’re not taking any valuable asset from the Knicks? as you stated in #2

Give an example why Knicks could do better.

"It's time", "I'll take my talent to ..." "Beat the Heat!"

by faNETicS on Aug 19, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The Knicks can offer up the expiring of Curry, which gives more cap relief + Gallo + Tony Douglas for Melo

We could easily outbid the Knicks, but the Knicks would top the offer suggested above of T-Will, Hump, & Harris.

by Paul G B on Aug 20, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I recommend going back and looking at the prices that are usually paid for All-Stars.

Lebron, who had no leverage at all after declaring he was taking his talents to Miami, fetched 2 number 1s and 2 number 2s from Miami so he could get his raise.

I doubt Denver woul seriously consider any of these proposals.

by Paul G B on Aug 19, 2010 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Murphy will most likely stay put

he loves the New York area and Knicks don’t need him so he will likely re-sign for MLE.

by JJ25 on Aug 19, 2010 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

he is saying the right things. Maybe he is genuinely excited, and maybe it is PR

but why take a huge pay cut for a team you will have played with for one (unless we get Melo) unremarkable season?

by Paul G B on Aug 19, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

other than the stars of the league, players start to take a pay cut in their next contract when they’re in their 30’s.

"It's time", "I'll take my talent to ..." "Beat the Heat!"

by faNETicS on Aug 19, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Nets wouldnt deal with him

til after the new CBA and who knows what the new CBA will bring.

by Net Income on Aug 19, 2010 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Big Year!

This was such a great acquisition, and for all the King Naysayers, get a life. Murphy should have a big year and don’t be surprised if he’s the Nets 2nd leading scorer behind Lopez.

Good Article..

But DD is sounding more dour than ever, wonder if he needs a vacation from his vacation..

by BubbaMcBubba on Aug 19, 2010 9:16 AM EDT reply actions

Dour?...Dave "D" sounds almost giddy from this quote....

“Murphy is not only the best power forward the Nets have had since Kenyon Martin, he might be the best boxscore stuffer they’ve had at the position since Derrick Coleman.

by M I K E on Aug 19, 2010 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

And although DaveD. first mentioned Troy Murphy over 1 month ago, he considered him to be a Cap-Killer and proceeded to move on to cheaper rookie contracts.

Now DaveD. is backtracking and Nets will still have good chance to get Melo.

Since any trade will probably be after Dec. 15, the Nets could be looking like a playoff team by then, thus being an extra attraction for Melo.

by jerry25 on Aug 19, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

lol, you’re really campaigning for that Outlaw for Melo trade huh? =)
