Avery, Mikhail: Very Good Moves, Billy: Not So Good, Say ESPN 'Minds'

The ESPN "Best Basketball Minds" continue.  In Tuesday's segment, ESPN's 93 "Minds" examine ownership, management and coaching changes in the NBA.

Nets score high in ownership and management change (Mikhail Prokhorov for Bruce Ratner), finishing a close second to the Warriors' switch, while coaching (Avery Johnson for Kiki Vandeweghe) was also ranked second, behind the Bulls'.  But the "Minds" called Billy King for Rod Thorn the summer's single worse management move, and by a 2-1 margin.

Meanwhile, Mike Fratello tells Nets Are Scorching how he thinks Johnson will run the Nets. " Johnson will try to establish a defensive presence at one end of the floor, and at the other end explore his transition opportunities with a guy like Devin Harris who has speed and quickness to push the ball and penetrate."

King's first move is much better than Thorn

Because Thorn had never done a solid trade that could make this team better in recent years. Thorn doesn’t know how to make a trade that bring some solid role players to help this team. Troy Murphy is just at that level could help.

Billy did in one month what Rod couldn’t do in like 6 years: get us a very good starting caliber PF.

Warriors management may have been bad

But getting Prohky in and the rat out has to be the best ownership change. Ratner didn’t give a damn about this team, he’s admitted it was just part of his business plan.

Avery will surprise some people. He is a great coach, and with our current squad could extract the most talent out of our players. I gree with the Czar, he will make defense a prioity at one end and then play a little run and game. inside out out, and isolations for TWill( who i believe will be one of our highest scorers this year)

And about the Blazers management change

I like Rich Cho a lot, I liked him for us. Pritchard is great, don’t get me wrong, but this Cho guy is a basketball genius.

Also, I’d like to know the idiot who voted Proky coming in was a bad change.

Well if Mikhail and Avery were very good moves...

And even though Thorn acquired Billy King, you would have to think Mikhail and Avery approved of King. Plus I doubt King just goes out and does what he wants without input or marching orders coming from key players in Nets management.. When King was hired Proky stated that Kings good standing and relations around the league was a key to his hiring. If you ever ran a fantasy sports team you know how that works. Some owners you love to deal with and others are a pain in the butt. You tend to deal with the one’s you get along well with. Maybe that’s why King was invited into that four team trade last week. Sometimes it’s better to be well liked then to be the smartest guy in the room.

I dont' believe King is a puppet...

I think Porky will run the Nets like one of his business’s. Everybody will have their assigned role. He will probably have checks and balances within his management team. I believe that is one of the big reasons Thorn left. Rod was used to calling all of the shots on the basketball end of things.

Thorn made some nice moves while with the Nets...

But we still finished behind all those teams he “fleeced”. I know the last few years his hands were tied but I never considered him a mastermind G.M.

According to CDS Sports’ Ken Berger, Melo wants to go to NY or Orlando.
http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22748484/23943102
“Anthony’s hesitation to sign a three-year, $65 million extension with the Nuggets goes beyond his desire to enjoy the major-market exposure and pressure that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade turned down this summer. Melo would accept other destinations as well, and the Magic are believed to be at the top of his list along with the Knicks, according to a person familiar with his strategy.

The exit strategy began taking shape last week, while Anthony was in New York for Nike’s World Basketball Festival. It was then, according to the source, that Nuggets management was advised to begin exploring trade possibilities for Anthony to avoid losing him as a free agent and getting nothing in return. When Denver fills its vacant GM position, the likely choice, former Suns executive David Griffin, will inherit a crisis similar to the one he endured with Amar’e Stoudemire, who left the Suns for a five-year, $99.9 million deal with the Knicks."

Not if Denver is smart and does something about it instead of losing him for less with a sign and trade

Maybe they get a young player and more assets with an in-season trade than they do with a summer sign and trade where they have even less leverage

what young players do Orlando have that they can afford to deal?

And NY would have to gut themselves since they have no draft picks to deal

Vince Carer's practically expiring contract is the big chip there

Since the next year is not guaranteed. Remember, they want financial flexibility, not equal value. Vince is a huge “expiring” contract

Brandon Bass, Ryan Anderson, Marcin Gortat, Redick, Orton are viable candidates for throw-ins to trades as well.

Huge chip. Orlando needs to hop on it but I don’t think their picks will be worth Denver giving in

David Stern is going to shut this down

when negotiations begin on the new CBA. I have already heard rumblings. This is not good for the league long term. He knows it. He never intended for his league to be like MLB, where a few teams get all the good players and the rest are just filler. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like baseball — the inequities. Stern has always talked about having a league where every team has an opprotunity to be successful, and now that’s becoming less and less the case.

this is why I despise the idea of "superteams"

Not only is the process of forming them nothing short of underhanded, it’s going to kill the league. parity in the NBA was already bad but this makes it worse.

The NFL is the only league that can truly tout that they have parity regardless of a few franchises that remain bottom feeders due to mismanagement

There is more likely to be a hard salary cap than no cap at all

I have seen both possibilities floated lately. Of course, there will be some kind of a compromise on both sides — always are. How to prevent players calling the shots and holding teams hostage? How about a new rule that teams can only have two max contract guys — if a third wants to jump into the fray, he has to take a specifically-scaled down reduction from the max. Result: won’t see too many superteams anymore.

How about a cap waiver

You can designate a couple of players and can offer double the max but not pay a tax.

by msm2 on Aug 17, 2010 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Um...

Stern can’t do anything. The Nuggets, just like the Hornets, Raptors, and Cavs, had 7+ years to build around their superstars. It’s not like superstars are leaving 2 years in. To build a super team, you also need to sacrifice years. Look at the Celtics, Lakers, Heat before they got good. Celtics were so terrible year in and year out that they were stacked with enough lottery picks to trade for Allen and KG while keeping Perkins and Rondo. Heat were so bad that the whole team expired this year. If they struck out in free agency they would’ve been set back for YEARS.

Cleveland, Denver, and NO were lucky to draft such great players. Those great players leaving after 7 years isn’t a tragedy. Look how happy Durant is. He signed his extension immediately. Kobe wavered a bit but he’s been a Laker for life. Same with Duncan. Only thing they have in common is that they were on teams that did a good job building around them. That’s how you shut down superstars bolting. No need for silly rules.

by mikegrand15 on Aug 18, 2010 2:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Has Alot to do with being a WINNING Player too...

Someone who performs well in the clutch. Kobe and Duncan are Winning players who bought into thier teams and systems. They all made efforts to build around these guys it never worked out. You can critisize in hindsite but efforts were made. The Nuggets got Allen Iverson, Kenyon Martin, Marcus Camby, Andre Miller and Chauncey Billups to play with Melo it didnt get done. Lebron had Shaq, Wally serbiak, Larry Hughes, Mo Williams and Antwan Jamison. 2 60+win teams. It didn’t get done. Alot of team building is variable unknowns. You never know about injuries nor do you know how players will blend on and off the court.
OKC had the privelidge of drafting Durant, Westbrook, Harden and Jeff Green in the top ten in seperate drafts because they had to endure the loosing. As soon as these kids start loosing they want out ASAP. XChicago with Rose, Deng and Noah all top ten guys.

The JETS/NETS are coming!

Brook has to explode this year

Everyone wants to go to Orlando for largely one reason. Dwight Howard. To play with the best center in the league who as a bonus will not take away from their offense.

He wants to go to New York for the city and his friendship with Amare. Well we can offer him the city soon, but can we offer a guy he can pair up with? That’s the key here.

by muwu on Aug 17, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agree

If I’m LeBron and really wanted to win titles I would have signed with Orlando somehow. Stern is going to close this window fast. It’s ruining the league. Melo won’t go to Orlando unless he’s getting paid what he wants but he needs them more than they need him, imo. They’ll still need a PF. I say we will not sign a decent FA or better until the end of next year. We’re still in NJ with a 12 win team. I’d rather see Favors explode and dream about it everyday.

by msm2 on Aug 18, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

good

now we can stop talking about him

It’s funny how these guys want to go to Orlando. Orlando is nothing compared to New York(or New Jersey for that matter), but I don’t blame them.

Orlando has no assets to trade though from what I can recall, unless they deal off VC’s expiring deal, Lewis has way too many years on his deal and he’s a bum. Have fun with that. Clearly if this information is legit, then Paul and Anthony are in collusion since Paul allegedly had Orlando on his list of teams. This makes New Orleans look STUPID for trading Collison because Paul is going where ever Anthony goes. Larry Bird robbed them blind and helped us. Kudos to all

by Net Income on Aug 17, 2010 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Why does it extend till 12-13?

And 4 million is still a relatively small price to pay for that financial relief if you can’t get a better offer from say New York or something

by muwu on Aug 17, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would they trade Melo's expiring deal for VC's (which has a few mil left in 2012)?

Keeping Melo and then losing him would be better than trading him for VC… same “nothing” outcome.

Not to mention that Denver already has Melo, KMart, JR Smith, and Afflalo coming off the books after this year, anyway. They could start rebuilding almost immediately. They’ll be looking for draft picks and young players more than expiring contracts.

by JohnFromLongIsland on Aug 17, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

They'll need larger expiring contracts to make the deal go through, yes...

But Melo for Vince works straight up, and Orlando has pretty much nothing else to offer since most of their contracts are ridiculous. I’m speaking only about Denver trading for VC… I haven’t given much thought to any other teams… Somewhere like Houston, for example, would have a much better shot at getting a deal done since they have a decent amount of young guys they could package with Jeffries’s expiring contract that would work out.

by JohnFromLongIsland on Aug 17, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but they still won't be enough to be competitive

They have to get lucky in the draft again, no big time free agent is coming there in my eyes.

by Atronic on Aug 17, 2010 4:22 PM EDT reply actions

Same way with us the last few years. Just build through the draft. When you get good, or when you get a good player, the free agents will come

Denver is in a pretty good place rebuildingwise this summer if they decide to blow it up. KMart is coming off the books, Anthony’s salary, Nene could opt out (not sure if he’ll walk away from 12 million with the CBA), Billups has a buyout, JR smith is a free agent. They saddled with a ton of contracts at least

Through the learning process and his growth as a player, hopefully he comes back this year and becomes a more consistent player as his decision-making, his understanding of when to shoot and when to pass improve. And blessed with the athleticism that he has and the strength that he has, he could be a lockdown defender if he concentrates on it and exerts the effort over longer periods of time to close his man out.

Every article I read that supports the super teams

keeps saying there are too many teams in the NBA.

Code for some of the weaker and smaller market teams have to go.

As Dollar said the NBA has turn to a fraternity players want to play with their buddy or someone make the game easier.

No one wants to struggle they want to WIN NOW.

These so called super stars don’t care about young talent or potential they want someone to help them win now.

They don’t want a future all star they want an already proven star.

With the exception of Durant.

Chris Paul and Melo toasted to this and look both are trying to leave before the season.

Lebron changed the game.

Miami is looked at as the future power house now it’s you get your three vs our three.

You can’t sell these players unless you have proven players.

As I said forget Melo let him run to the Knicks we are a playoff team and we will be fine.

As for King his first move was great.

the CBA battle

will be between big market teams and small market teams as much as it will be between the players and the owners.

Nets are not a big market team with a rich owner. Nets may be in a year or two threatening to be a super team with New York, a new arena and a mega rich owner.

Now Melo can see what we have and understand we will be better than his current team.

He could be the last piece.
