Thorn to Join Stefanski in Philly

When he stepped down from his job as president of the Nets, Rod Thorn said he wasn't retiring. And he wasn't kidding. Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the 76ers have hired Thorn as their new president. Former Nets general manager Ed Stefanski has been demoted from president to GM in Philly.

Chris Mannix reports that new coach Doug Collins will join Thorn and Stefanski at a press conference Thursday to introduce Thorn. Of course, It's been less than four weeks since Thorn was replaced in New Jersey by Bily King.  King was available after Stefanski replaced him in 2007. It's caused Chad Ford to ask, "Did the Sixers and Nets swap front offices?"

At the time of Thorn's departure, various explanations were offered as to why he was leaving, from family to a salary dispute with Mikhail Prokhorov. Thorn denied he had any dispute with the new Russian ownership and Prokhorov said the same.

Its not funny “ha-ha”, its funny “boo-hoo”. The Net collective BB IQ went down, but I guess Thorn and the Russians/Avery wasn’t going to work.

Thorn has a long legacy in the NBA, I judge him across his career.

Thorn picked Avery, I considered Avery perfect for the job and have said so many times today.

Thorn picked Favors. I actually didn’t want Favors OR Cousins. I wanted them to trade the pick big time. We’ll see if I was right.

I do miss Thorn. The guy has a consummate basketball mind, and it weakens the Nets that he is with the sixers now.

Interesting theory

Could Rod Thorn himself run afoul of The Curse of Thorn? After all, he basically traded King for Thorn. Therefore, The Curse of Thorn must affect Rod Thorn himself.

It was all about respect from the get go. Rod didn’t feel the Russian paid him the proper respect, mandating a pay cut, not coming out as a strong supporter of keeping Rod, making it seem the job was available, etc.

Thorn could have easily been dismissed in the same fashion that Kiki was, but thankfully, he wasn’t.

I think this was more like the Steinbrenner Joe Torre thing. Proky saw Thorn as getting old, and only good for a couple of years.

Rod felt he wasn’t “over the hill” yet, and wanted something like a 4 year deal at 4-5 per, with no interference from the Russians.

On top of that, he could see that Proky liked the young and aggressive Avery Johnson, and Avery would have a big say in the future of the Nets.

For all we know, Rod may have only been offered around 5 million over 2 years.

Thorn took all of this as an “insult”, just as Joe Torre did with Steinbrenner.

by jerry25 on Aug 11, 2010 10:47 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Exactly...

Proky wanted shorter contracts to be able to reevaluate once he got to know the NBA. I cannot blame him as Thorn has been far from stellar the last couple of years.

It was just time to move on.

I wonder what the relationship between Doug Collins and Rod Thorn will be?

Clearly Collins was making basketball decisions over Stefanski, but what about Collins vs. Thorn?

Although Stefanski was demoted, his job is now more secure, which is good for Ed.

no great mystery

Prokhorov’s execs had their hands in Rod’s pies. Bye, bye any autonomy whatsoever. The writing was on the wall with the Nets.

It’s the destination I find surprising. I can kind of understand it, though. Bringing aboard Collins and Thorn is a solid management foundation for success if your default setting is chaos and losing seasons.

by superluminal on Aug 11, 2010 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

right on both points I think

I wonder how Proky was able to trust Rod to be working without a contract for the 2 most crucial weeks in recent Nets history, when he was about to jump ship to the competition.

Very strange situation.
Proky was lucky that Rod didn’t sabotage the Nets franchise during that time. In Rod Proky Trusted.

Funny, I thought that just a couple of weeks ago, Rod was still consulting with King on possible trades to help the Nets.

Rod had to know about plans to make TWill a SG, so as to be able to trade CLee. The “plan” was beginning to form right after the summer league.

Inquiries about Troy Murphy were already written about at the end of July, which means they could have been initiated by Thorn or right after King took over:

http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsider/archives/2010/07/pacers_trying_t.html
Avery had to be involved behind the scene all along to make it a smooth transition from Thorn to King.

Rod had lost his ability to pull the trigger. He is now a plodder who prefers safe cheap deals. If I was starting a team from scratch, he wouldn’t be in my top ten for GM or team prez. I’d rather have someone willing to swing for the fences (and strikes out) that someone who naps most of the day.

This also makes me wonder why Thorn and Phila. never seemed to talk about swapping picks so that Nets could would be able to draft Evan Turner.

Ironically, Phila may regret taking Turner, to play with Iggy (can’t see them coexisting).

Phila. might have been better off with Cousins, if they wanted a short term improvement and Center was their biggest weakness.

I wonder if Rod new in mid June that he would have a job waiting in Phila. if he retired in mid July.

Maybe the wait was to not make it look like a conflict of interests?

None of the moves this offseason are Thorn-type moves

Look at Thorn’s history of transactions. The moves this summer were way too coherent for the incompetent fool. Adding bench players that actually fit into a team concept and vision is something new and unique for Nets fans.

cant dispute the main point

now obviously he had the cash and the cap space, but this off-season was not his style.

his style was more filling gaps with veterans who in some cases succeeded (Uncle Cliffy and Boki Nachbar) but in most cases did not (Jeff McInnis, Ron Mercer, Jamaal Magloire, Marc Jackson, Linton Johnson III, Tracy Murray).

he would not have done this deal, I am told reliably, because he has been all about cap space. King is more aggressive. That could work or it might not, but it is a significant difference.

I remember an interview by draftexress

where givony said that some team managements are run by statistics while others are based on “old school scouting”. It seems like Thorn would have been from the old school and Marks from the new school based on metrics of sorts.

I am not sure about King, but this may have been Thorn realizing that the Nets as an organization where moving in a new direction and that he wasn’t a good fit for where the Nets were going.

I also wonder whether there was some debate within the organization on certain issues like drafting Favors or signing some free agents. Prokhorov may have kept him on but realize it wasn’t a fit and lowballed him.

Just a theory.

Then he leaves and a month later he is competing so close to us and in the same division. We screwed up by not keeping him here.

Ratner made Thorn work with a tight budget

Thorn was the one the decided how to spend the salary dollars. A competent GM would have retooled long ago and had the Nets swimming along with young talent and playoff experience.

Thorn thought he could win a championship with the “Big 3” which says everything about his lack of competence.

Thorn's Timing

Mid June, as we were heading into free agency, Rod leaks to the media that he’s leaving. That can’t have helped our chances to attract free agents (although we weren’t going to win the sweepstakes anyway) . But it was big news and didn’t cast the best light on the new Nets ownership. Seemed to me like Thorn was sabotaging the organization. Now, on a day when we finally land a PF – when most of us feel really good about the direction of the Nets – there’s Thorn again; making an announcement and now the media will regurgitate a) our failure in FA – which is BS; b) Proky’s promise to win a championship; c) our record last year; and d) questions about Thorn’s departure and the evil Russian Empire. Can’t we enjoy one really good day without Thorn grabbing the headlines?

Another ice-cold hard slap in the face for this organization

I never had as much of a problem with the idea of replacing Thorn bc he was the definition of a hot and cold GM; but bc we essentially swapped Rod for Billy King in a sense – damn do we look stupid, again! Why is everyone so cocky and proud of this organization? Stupid billboards, overpaying players that are either role players or shouldnt be in the NBA (Petro, May…) giving up on C Lee way too quick…. letting go of Rod when there was no guarantee of a superior GM available….weird!

Now everyone yell back that we are “ALL NEW” with the highest winning % coach of all time and we have the secret weapon in a slick russian mogul who will spend cash! I will admit we will definitely double our win total from last year, but that doesnt actually say much since we will still will not reach the 34 wins of 2 seasons ago. Seemingly 80% of the teams in this entire league upgraded heavily this off-season…

If you think you’re not on board as to what the organization is heading, you have to go. That’s normal professional practice. You won’t force yourself in staying, and fighting every move that the organization is trying to make, not healthy.

It’s more than likely that Thorn is now a Russian spy. He is a double agent, who was sent by Proky to infiltrate, gain their trust & destroy the 76ers basketball team from within while at the same time trading all of the 76er assets (aka chips) to the Nets. genius.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the real Thorn was actually in Siberia somewhere and he was replaced with a clone or a robot… but I don’t have much proof on that yet.
