Thorn to Join Stefanski in Philly
When he stepped down from his job as president of the Nets, Rod Thorn said he wasn't retiring. And he wasn't kidding. Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the 76ers have hired Thorn as their new president. Former Nets general manager Ed Stefanski has been demoted from president to GM in Philly.
Chris Mannix reports that new coach Doug Collins will join Thorn and Stefanski at a press conference Thursday to introduce Thorn. Of course, It's been less than four weeks since Thorn was replaced in New Jersey by Bily King. King was available after Stefanski replaced him in 2007. It's caused Chad Ford to ask, "Did the Sixers and Nets swap front offices?"
At the time of Thorn's departure, various explanations were offered as to why he was leaving, from family to a salary dispute with Mikhail Prokhorov. Thorn denied he had any dispute with the new Russian ownership and Prokhorov said the same.

It’s funny to think of Billy King and Rod Thorn switching places though…

Its not funny “ha-ha”, its funny “boo-hoo”. The Net collective BB IQ went down, but I guess Thorn and the Russians/Avery wasn’t going to work.

Thorn picked Favors

Thorn has a long legacy in the NBA, I judge him across his career.
Thorn picked Avery, I considered Avery perfect for the job and have said so many times today.
Thorn picked Favors. I actually didn’t want Favors OR Cousins. I wanted them to trade the pick big time. We’ll see if I was right.
I do miss Thorn. The guy has a consummate basketball mind, and it weakens the Nets that he is with the sixers now.

Jack, you actually don't read my posts. I don't know why you comment on them.

Interesting theory
Could Rod Thorn himself run afoul of The Curse of Thorn? After all, he basically traded King for Thorn. Therefore, The Curse of Thorn must affect Rod Thorn himself.

I knew him talking about retiiring to spend
time with his family was a bunch of BS. It has to have something to do with Proky. We ended up OK but I felt like he left the Nets at the worst possible time.
Proky's first screw up!
Proky did something, or didn’t do something, to chase THORN. This was a mistake. Thorn was a President’s President and still had something in the tank. BOOOOO!
Paul from Delray Beach
Screw Thorn... He had it made for ten years... and screwed it up...
David Stern got him the job… And then Ratner “I know nothing about B-Ball took over” and he thought he was the cats meow. Thorn ruled the roost. He threw Frank and Kiki under the bus and blamed it on others, trying so hard to keep his job. He lost his job and I wish him well. But please spare me the what could of been stories….
I wonder when the truth will leak. Something went seriously wrong here.

by R-D on Aug 11, 2010 9:56 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
This is very very strange...
Something must have happened internally here for Thorn to move to another team so quickly. He clearly was not retiring but I never expected something so soon.
Did Avery’s presence do something here?
I know people around here...
Like to ride Prokorov’s jock but be honest. Since he has taken over the team nothing has gone right and a lot has gone wrong. Every week I get more and more worried about exactly what his motives are.

Easy answer
The Nets biggest stumbling block to success is gone from the team and now will screw up a divisional rival.
This is one of the greatest days in Nets history
Please Prokhorov never again listen to the fools that told you it was a good idea to retain Rod Thorn
Weird
I guess Thorn didn’t get along with Prokhy.
My opinion of Thorn has gone down over the years – he isn’t all he was cracked up to be. He did incredibly well at the beginning of his tenure with the Nets. But the last 5 years? Not so much.
Now then we can safely say we've ended up with no free agents after 2 34-win seasons and a 12-win one
I actually think it’s safe to say that Thorn ruined the Nets’ franchise more than King ruined the Sixers’.
would be good to hear a comment from ownership
but i guess we’ll never know the truth.
doubt there will be too many deals with Philly in the future
Utah will offer them Deron Williams for Jrue Holiday and Elton Brand
and Thorn will be considered some kind of magician hero yet again.
Then next year Philadelphia will pick 12th and for some odd reason Harrison Barnes will fall to 12 and he’ll pick him.
True genius.
Maybe Thorn was upset that the “Blueprint for Greatness” did not include his likeness.

Memo to Billy King
If Thorn comes calling for a trade, hang up right away or risk being fleeced.
Thorn would be afraid to deal with King.
King himself fleeced Thorn once.
"There's no way, with hindsight, I would've ever called up Larry, called up Magic and said, 'Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team,'"
KVH and ToddMach for Mutombo was not a fleecing. Todd Mach had the foot problems which were already evident in his time with NJ. He never played a full season again. We shed a year of large salary commitment in getting rid of KVH. The summer Mutombo expired, we signed RJ and Collins. If KVH is still on the books, that probably does not happen.
and what did Mutombo did for us?
Remember Thorn bought him out just to get him off Nets payroll? And we are not talking a lot of money here not just $3M.
@NI: Hmuch money did Mutombo got from his buy out?

Thorn did not pass Proky's conditioning test
I’m not sure if any of you read about it but all members of the front office must be able to run a mile in under six minutes.
Thorn ran it in 2 days / 18 hours / 49 minutes / 34 seconds.
Did not cut it.
I would seriously like to hear how much Philly paid Thorn
That would tell you if its a money dispute between he and Proky.
I know most of us can't stand Mike Francesa
but he DID say all along that Rod was forced out by the new ownership. That Prokhorov made the mistake of rubbing Rod the wrong way, which Mike thought Prokhorov “wouldn’t be stupid enough to do.” I distinctly remember Mike saying this six weeks or so ago when the news broke of Rod’s retirement. Mike and Rod DO have a good relationship. I dismissed it at the time, but hmmm.

Let's move on...
Rod didn’t want a pay cut. Thorn and Ed were among the worst drafters in the NBA.
Time to pass the baton to the next generation.
by rundmc00 on Aug 11, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
It was all about respect from the get go. Rod didn’t feel the Russian paid him the proper respect, mandating a pay cut, not coming out as a strong supporter of keeping Rod, making it seem the job was available, etc.
The team was a disaster last year
Thorn could have easily been dismissed in the same fashion that Kiki was, but thankfully, he wasn’t.

I think this was more like the Steinbrenner Joe Torre thing. Proky saw Thorn as getting old, and only good for a couple of years.
Rod felt he wasn’t “over the hill” yet, and wanted something like a 4 year deal at 4-5 per, with no interference from the Russians.
On top of that, he could see that Proky liked the young and aggressive Avery Johnson, and Avery would have a big say in the future of the Nets.
For all we know, Rod may have only been offered around 5 million over 2 years.
Thorn took all of this as an “insult”, just as Joe Torre did with Steinbrenner.
by jerry25 on Aug 11, 2010 10:47 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Exactly...
Proky wanted shorter contracts to be able to reevaluate once he got to know the NBA. I cannot blame him as Thorn has been far from stellar the last couple of years.
It was just time to move on.
I wonder what the relationship between Doug Collins and Rod Thorn will be?
Clearly Collins was making basketball decisions over Stefanski, but what about Collins vs. Thorn?
Although Stefanski was demoted, his job is now more secure, which is good for Ed.
Rod/Ed are horrible drafters...
King has a better eye for talent. Marks >>>>>>>>>> Ed.
King has an eye for talent and Marks is an expert on the details of making trades work.
And Avery knows what he wants for his team. Proky likes to be surrounded by younger ambitious people.
It is a better situation for the Nets the way it has turned out.
Listen to Jerry!
IMHO, he’s right again.

I thought they offered a 4 mil per take it or leave it deal..
Which was a paycut for Thorn. I think the take it or leave it thing may have done it.
BUT….. Before thorn left the Bulls in 84 He navigated thier #3 pick that year. Some gaurd from North Carolina. That turned out pretty well for the Bulls.
10 years nice run. Started off with a bang and was all downhill from there…lol.
But all the best
The JETS/NETS are coming!
no great mystery
Prokhorov’s execs had their hands in Rod’s pies. Bye, bye any autonomy whatsoever. The writing was on the wall with the Nets.
It’s the destination I find surprising. I can kind of understand it, though. Bringing aboard Collins and Thorn is a solid management foundation for success if your default setting is chaos and losing seasons.
right on both points I think
Rod had complete control under the RAT. Proky wanted him as a figurehead and Stern confidant for a year or two. Rod spit the dummy. Realities of business.
Thorn probably wanted a job
that wasn’t too far from his Westchester home. Walsh is firmly in with the Knicks. Philly was next closest.
Net Income has always been talking about how Young the people around Proky are.
Thorn had to start feeling like an Old Fossil.
Proky isn’t used to having people over 50 around, much less someone to be 70 years old.
I doubt Proky felt he was being disrespectful, to expect someone to retire at age 72, but Rod wasn’t ready.
So wait it's now F Rod thorn and he is a horrible drafter?
come on now. Three weeks ago we were thanking the man for making us relevant and now it’s this?
by killa kadafi191 on Aug 11, 2010 10:57 PM EDT reply actions
I loved Rod and still do...
But life goes on (and he was a horrible drafter).
I wonder how Proky was able to trust Rod to be working without a contract for the 2 most crucial weeks in recent Nets history, when he was about to jump ship to the competition.
Very strange situation.
Proky was lucky that Rod didn’t sabotage the Nets franchise during that time. In Rod Proky Trusted.
Funny, I thought that just a couple of weeks ago, Rod was still consulting with King on possible trades to help the Nets.
Rod had to know about plans to make TWill a SG, so as to be able to trade CLee. The “plan” was beginning to form right after the summer league.
Inquiries about Troy Murphy were already written about at the end of July, which means they could have been initiated by Thorn or right after King took over:
http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsider/archives/2010/07/pacers_trying_t.html
Avery had to be involved behind the scene all along to make it a smooth transition from Thorn to King.
Question: Did Prokhorov share his secret “Russian surprise” plan with Thorn?
by ispartan on Aug 12, 2010 12:01 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Good riddance!!
Billy King got the Nets their PF “Moose” in a matter of weeks. Something that Thorn was incapable or unwilling to do in like 6 years.
by Doesthishurt on Aug 11, 2010 11:05 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
+1
Rod had lost his ability to pull the trigger. He is now a plodder who prefers safe cheap deals. If I was starting a team from scratch, he wouldn’t be in my top ten for GM or team prez. I’d rather have someone willing to swing for the fences (and strikes out) that someone who naps most of the day.

This also makes me wonder why Thorn and Phila. never seemed to talk about swapping picks so that Nets could would be able to draft Evan Turner.
Ironically, Phila may regret taking Turner, to play with Iggy (can’t see them coexisting).
Phila. might have been better off with Cousins, if they wanted a short term improvement and Center was their biggest weakness.
I wonder if Rod new in mid June that he would have a job waiting in Phila. if he retired in mid July.
Maybe the wait was to not make it look like a conflict of interests?
well
i guess this isn’t a total douchebag move. He could have gotten us a bad coach, not traded for D. James, not signed Morrow, Farmar, Petro (?), Outlaw and all that jazz.

Rod Thorn has his talents...
But his talents didn’t work for us in the long run…Sure, you can blame Ratner, and Kiki and whoever, but Thorn in the final analysis couldn’t figure it out..
The part of the story that said that Thorn wasn't happy with a short-term contract

Rod left us in good shape. That’s all I can ask. If he wanted a longer deal, I don’t blame him. We retained Marks, and King has done a good job with moving quickly and not crippling us. So far…so good.

None of the moves this offseason are Thorn-type moves
Look at Thorn’s history of transactions. The moves this summer were way too coherent for the incompetent fool. Adding bench players that actually fit into a team concept and vision is something new and unique for Nets fans.
Please Prokhorov never again listen to the fools that told you it was a good idea to retain Rod Thorn
cant dispute the main point
now obviously he had the cash and the cap space, but this off-season was not his style.
his style was more filling gaps with veterans who in some cases succeeded (Uncle Cliffy and Boki Nachbar) but in most cases did not (Jeff McInnis, Ron Mercer, Jamaal Magloire, Marc Jackson, Linton Johnson III, Tracy Murray).
he would not have done this deal, I am told reliably, because he has been all about cap space. King is more aggressive. That could work or it might not, but it is a significant difference.
good luck to you mr. thorn...
… but i hope my njnets will beat your new team senseless.
Am disappointed to see Rod with another team, much less a division rival.
I join those of you who would like to understand why he left the Nets. The timing was very strange and unexpected. Let’s hope Proky wasn’t foolish enough to push him out the door. If Proky had an issue with the man’s age, it shows poor judgment in my opinion.
He did not want to give Thorn a 4 or 5 year contract...
I am fine with that.
Thorn will be on an applesauce and
Ensure meal plan in a year or two. Proky didn’t want to deal with that. Proky wants to hang out with studs who like their women in pumps and who have stage names like Sasha and Delight. Thorn just wouldn’t fit in.

I remember an interview by draftexress
where givony said that some team managements are run by statistics while others are based on “old school scouting”. It seems like Thorn would have been from the old school and Marks from the new school based on metrics of sorts.
I am not sure about King, but this may have been Thorn realizing that the Nets as an organization where moving in a new direction and that he wasn’t a good fit for where the Nets were going.
I also wonder whether there was some debate within the organization on certain issues like drafting Favors or signing some free agents. Prokhorov may have kept him on but realize it wasn’t a fit and lowballed him.
Just a theory.

obviously certain times call for an overhaul…..and if a 12 win season doesnt cause one…..then i dont know what would…..

Wut?
Lehman doesn’t exist anymore. Goldman didn’t do a complete overhaul. Not sure what’s your point.
My point was, if the boss only blames down and fire people, the guy is a terrible boss.
Rod’s legacy was blemished by what he did with the Nets before running and saving himself.
We have no reason to trade with Philly

Thorn picked Billy King so he could join Stefanski in Philly!
Again, Thorn outsmarts everyone!
Billy King has been gone from Philly for 2 years, so I don't see how it made a difference.
However, Rod’s close ties to Philly via Ed probably had something to do with recommending Billy King.
This is AWFUL! What happened? I figured he would join another team, but, Philly? ugh! That is a team in our division. We are left with Billy King? Seems SO not sexy, regardless of the move today. In addition, is that not a conflict of interest? He more or less picked our free agents, picked our coach and then picked Billy King? Then he leaves and a month later he is competing so close to us and in the same division. We screwed up by not keeping him here.
LETS GO NETS!
I'm so happy I can't see straight
I haven’t been this happy since Thorn’s last day.
The man who screwed up the franchise is now running another team in the same division.
Please Prokhorov never again listen to the fools that told you it was a good idea to retain Rod Thorn
The man who screwed up the franchise is Bruce Ratner

and then subsequently saved it by selling it to Prokhorov.
but yea, Thorn was hit or miss especially in the last 6 years.

Ratner made Thorn work with a tight budget
Thorn was the one the decided how to spend the salary dollars. A competent GM would have retooled long ago and had the Nets swimming along with young talent and playoff experience.
Thorn thought he could win a championship with the “Big 3” which says everything about his lack of competence.
Please Prokhorov never again listen to the fools that told you it was a good idea to retain Rod Thorn
I'm so pissed I can't write my thoughts down without cursing!
Thorn was the best part of the Nets. Porky (my current name for him) is a fool. Either he didn’t know or appreciate what he had. He will learn the hard way. Philly should put a billboard up where that other one was by MSG and have Thorn’s picture on it with his feet crushing Porky’s & Dolan’s head with the saying empire state of mind on the top and it’s all new at the bottom. To the posters who like Thorn gone just reinforce the notion that Net fans are clueless. They wouldn’t know a quality b-ball man if their life depended on it.
Thorn destroyed the Nets
He is the reason there wasn’t quality basketball in NJ for the past 5 seasons
Please Prokhorov never again listen to the fools that told you it was a good idea to retain Rod Thorn
lol
we dont like that Thorn is gone……but sometimes in life… you just need to move on for both parties…. i love the man….. but even i knew….that it was time for a fresh start…. it came down to contract in years….and Proky didnt budge….and i dont blame him one bit

It's wild how Rod Thorn can trade himself and still come out with the better side of the deal.

Yes, Thorn finally has the PF he has always wanted
Thorn didn’t get the better of anything
Please Prokhorov never again listen to the fools that told you it was a good idea to retain Rod Thorn
wtf thorn?
that’s messed up. maybe he did have issues with prokhorov after all.
Thorn's Timing
Mid June, as we were heading into free agency, Rod leaks to the media that he’s leaving. That can’t have helped our chances to attract free agents (although we weren’t going to win the sweepstakes anyway) . But it was big news and didn’t cast the best light on the new Nets ownership. Seemed to me like Thorn was sabotaging the organization. Now, on a day when we finally land a PF – when most of us feel really good about the direction of the Nets – there’s Thorn again; making an announcement and now the media will regurgitate a) our failure in FA – which is BS; b) Proky’s promise to win a championship; c) our record last year; and d) questions about Thorn’s departure and the evil Russian Empire. Can’t we enjoy one really good day without Thorn grabbing the headlines?
lol
a 12-72 resume belongs with Thorn forever……
im gonna miss Thorn……but its all new……so heck lets start new…..
in Proky I trust
The Truth
Prokhy thought Thorn was too old to be a top figure for the NETS. Thorn was offended.
power forward
I look forward to Philly having a glaring hole in its line up for a decade while Thorn drafts the best player available who doesn’t actually fill that need.
I am baffled by what happened with Thorn’s departure from NJ but think that some folks here have some good theories: Thorn’s age and length of contract.
Or maybe the new owner
who has sunk zillions of dollars into this organization, wants to run “his” new team, “his” own way.
Prokhorov has cleaned house and I don’t think that was by accident. The only ones left standing from last year are Lopez, Harris, T-Will and Humphries. And i wouldn’t be surprised if one or two of those players are gone before the season starts. Our President, G.M. and Head Coach are all gone. “It’s all new”…
I don't get why ppl are angry
Dudes we won 12 games last year….house was going to get cleaned.
Like the new direction, I believe in Proky/Avery/Billy/Bobby
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
Great minds think alike...LOL
NetLogic… We both used the term “clean house” in our post, but you beat me by 2 minutes. We might of actually been typing those exact words at the exact time, strange but true, so we must be right. I guess Proky loves housekeeping.
Like where your head it at
More people need to think like this….
Out with the old regime, in with the new. If I invested hundreds of millions into a property, a 12 win property I would clean house and bring in my own people…run things my way.
Thank you RT, you were a great staple here for 10 years, but time to move on…Nets fans need to not be so hung up on this.
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
for real

"I believe in Proky/Avery/Billy/Bobby"
NetLogic, you are brilliant! You actually broke the code and figured out why Thorn is no longer with us. Why?… his name does not end in “Y”, that’s why… but I guess that’s a thorny theory to discuss right now seeing that his first name is really Rodney. But nobody ever called him Rodney so you are still correct.
haha epic find
well done
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
Actually his real name is Rodney
Rodney King Thorn. Yup, you can’t make that up.

exactly
I like what we’re doing so far

Well be gone and remember love don't live here anymore
This is cold as ice and we should be as cold to him.
Celebrate our solid future and forget Thorn.
Yeah we know...
That was discussed in the “thorny theory” part of our post, and dismissed because nobody ever calls him Rodney, that I can recall. NetsLogic deciphered the code, so take it up with him…
His name is Rod
in the 10 years he was with the Nets not once was he called Rodney…
the Y rule doesn’t apply to RT
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
Want further proof that the "Y" theory is valid...
Troy Murphy…. In fact if Proky knew Thorns first name was really Rodney, Thorn would still have his job. Do you think it’s a coincidence that Rodney ended up in Philly?
good catch, i'd hire you as a private dick
i mean detective
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
NetsLogic "Y" theory can also predict the future...
Hint… Carmelo Anthon"y"…
Why does the “Y” theory work… Don’t ask me why. Why not ask NetsLogic.
"Private Dick"....Thanks a lot NetLogic...
I go and publish your brilliant “Y” theory and you get testy with me. Why?
haha M I K E I kid I kid
I only make jokes….
the Y theory does work for Carmelo as well, just wait and see my friend
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
LMY - Losing my mind....
Ever wonder why this website is called NetsDail"y"… Yup, the “Y” theory.
NetLogic is going to win the Nobel prize this year!
In fact...
If Tom Thibodeau went by the name Tommy instead of Tom, he would be coaching the Nets right now, not Aver"y". NetLogic, we can make a fortune with this “Y” theory of yours. We just gotta find a way to market it. Maybe we should call "Y"ormark…
I believe in this "Y" theory so much...
I’m going to change my tag M I K E to M I K E Y…
And NetLogic you are going by the name NetLogically from now on.
The power of the “Y” rules….
you are on fiya this morning
I am very impressed with your game
2 thumbs up
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
faNETicallY
I’ll change my handle to that.
"It's time", "I'll take my talent to ..." "Beat the Heat!"
It might be just that Billy King wants more players here that have a "Y" at the end of their first and last names.
Sean MaY
TroY MurphY
And maybe we’re on to the next one.
Carmelo AnthonY :)

Another convert...Great!
Hey guys… there are some tough looking dudes wearing black suits and shades, speaking what sounds like Russian, outside my driveway.
This might be my last post for awhile. Don’t worry, I won’t tell them what I know about the “Y” theory. Take care…
Net Income or other moderators...
Any admission yet that Thorn WAS fired by Prokhorov??? If so, an apology would be nice as well.
There is a difference between fired and not retained
It would have been great if Thorn was actually fired. He was allowed to stay around the front office far, far too long.
You know how I know Thorn wasn’t fired, I didn’t get to dance with joy.
Please Prokhorov never again listen to the fools that told you it was a good idea to retain Rod Thorn
seriously...
you are on FIYA
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
He wasn't fired, he wasn't let go, or any of that
This was Thorn’s decision, and maybe Proky did something that Thorn didn’t respect or appreciate, but Prokhorov wanted Thorn. Maybe the numbers didn’t match up.
Either way, it was Thorn who didn’t want to be with the Nets anymore.
It’s really as simple as that.
It was his choice BECAUSE
he was offered a low-ball deal from Prokhorov the billionaire. In other words, a cowardly way to fire someone. Call it what you want Income, I know you would never call out your boss on this site.
I believe Rod Thorn, and what he said ...
more than what you think happened to him.
"It's time", "I'll take my talent to ..." "Beat the Heat!"
Another ice-cold hard slap in the face for this organization
I never had as much of a problem with the idea of replacing Thorn bc he was the definition of a hot and cold GM; but bc we essentially swapped Rod for Billy King in a sense – damn do we look stupid, again! Why is everyone so cocky and proud of this organization? Stupid billboards, overpaying players that are either role players or shouldnt be in the NBA (Petro, May…) giving up on C Lee way too quick…. letting go of Rod when there was no guarantee of a superior GM available….weird!
Now everyone yell back that we are “ALL NEW” with the highest winning % coach of all time and we have the secret weapon in a slick russian mogul who will spend cash! I will admit we will definitely double our win total from last year, but that doesnt actually say much since we will still will not reach the 34 wins of 2 seasons ago. Seemingly 80% of the teams in this entire league upgraded heavily this off-season…

from Rodney King Thorn to Billy King ;)

Watching the live press conference
Thorn mentioned how it’s not about egos, it’s about being on the same page withing the organization.
Cheap shot?
I think that was about Stefanski
being demoted for Rod.
Again, it’s a professional move for Thorn.
If you think you’re not on board as to what the organization is heading, you have to go. That’s normal professional practice. You won’t force yourself in staying, and fighting every move that the organization is trying to make, not healthy.
So Proky wants something he’s not comfortable with … end of story.
Everyone moves on.
"It's time", "I'll take my talent to ..." "Beat the Heat!"
did anyone ever stop to consider
It’s more than likely that Thorn is now a Russian spy. He is a double agent, who was sent by Proky to infiltrate, gain their trust & destroy the 76ers basketball team from within while at the same time trading all of the 76er assets (aka chips) to the Nets. genius.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the real Thorn was actually in Siberia somewhere and he was replaced with a clone or a robot… but I don’t have much proof on that yet.
That'll be Avery
They’ve just created an Avery clone in Russia.
Rod will make Turner a bust. Then he’ll ship him to us for peanuts. But we’ll be generous and send them the Hump.
