the Nets....
Grading the Nets offseason:
Ideally:
Draft John Wall- The best prospect since LeBron James
Trade for LeBron James – in a sign and trade
Trade for Chris Bosh in a sign and trade
Hire a good coaching staff filled with experience, depth, and winning pasts
Get a bunch of solid role players shooters, rebounders, and hard workers
Get a new, better owner one dedicated to winning
What really happened:
Drafted Derrick Favors

John Wall:
"One of the top prospects in North Carolina's Class of 2009. Wall is extremely difficult to guard and his quickness to the hoop provides issues for defenders. His coming out party was at Reebok U. A speed merchant who specializes in separating himself from defenders, he's one of the fastest risers in his class. The perimeter game is the area needing improvement. Lock high-major prospect and a potential national level recruit."
Derrick Favors
"Could be a potential franchise college player and beyond. Few have the ability to finish with strength and efficiency that he brings. Quiet kid who goes about his business and takes numbers. Excellent student and a high character young man. In contention for many player of the year awards as a junior."
-scouthoops.com
Bottom Line: Despite missing out on Wall, a player who has dazzling ball handling and unheard-of speed and court vision, we picked up a PF who has the potential to be a franchise player. A player who has the strength and humble being to become truly great. In the end, we may have won the draft despite losing out.
Trade for Anthony Morrow

"You always feel it, it's just all about staying poised," he said. "You can't start getting too anxious, like, 'OK, I've got to make the next shot since I made the last one. It's just like keep playing. It's a game of errors, really. You're going to make some mistakes. It's all about staying poised and going out there and doing what you do."
Anthony Morrow said this after a game and its good for the Nets to know they have humble players. Coachable players who will greatly excel under Avery’s system. Morrow has a great shot and more importantly, a great shot to BE great… I expect big things.
Morrow "facts"
FACT: Obama was bowing to Anthony Morrow. (The Big Rebounder, warriorsworld.net)
FACT: What is the sound of one hand clapping? Anthony Morrow applauding himself with his left hand as he knocks down jumpers with his right hand...............from half court. (Slam, RealGM)
FACT: Halley's Comet only comes once every 75 years because it's too scared to face Anthony Morrow. (Slam, RealGM)
FACT: Anthony Morrow missed a jump shot once..................and then God created man. (Slam, RealGM)
FACT: The NBA will be officially changing the term "jump shot" to "Morrow shot" as of the 2009/2010 season and beyond. (Slam, RealGM)
FACT: Anthony Morrow only shoots three pointers because there aren't full court 12 pointers. (Slam, RealGM)
Just shows what other people think of a kid who can become a Ray Allen and a consistent 20 point scorer. Although this all fun, obviously not true, it shows what people have thought of him… honor him like Chuck Norris.
Trade for Murphy
Grade 80/100

Brings a unique mix of rebounding dominance and excellent shooting range to the power forward spot. Loves to mix it up inside but also plays a good perimeter game (which includes nice passing skills). |
For such a big, physical player he isn't much of a defender. Fouls are a problem, as is his tendency to get injured. |

Hire a good coaching staff
Grade: 100/100
Coaching staff:
Avery Johnson- Former coach of the year
Sam Mitchell -Former coach of the year
Larry Krystkowiak former head coach
Popeye Jones 11 years experience
With Avery being a former coach of the year and long time veterans to guide him on his quest or redemption, the Nets will be very well coached. They have a good big man coach and coaches who have dealt with and can handle young players. Out players are very coachable… from the quiet Derrick Favors to the poised Anthony Morrow. And lets not forget, Avery has the best record for a coach ever. He hasn’t had the best experience in the playoffs, but he has learned and we must have faith in the little general.
Better owner
110/100
"For me, life and business, in particular is a big game," Prokhorov told "60 Minutes" correspondent Steve Kroft.
If you could afford to do anything, would you do daring stunts on a jet ski and hire a production company to put it to music? Maybe not. But Prokhorov is always looking for a challenge.
Asked if he likes danger, Prokhorov said, "I like to control risk."
This guy will be a great, committed owner. Controlling risk? Risk is when you’re team is borderline playoffs and it looks like Mikhail has done a good job assembling a coaching staff and scouts along with GM. He is already greatly respected all around sports and with his deep pockets should scare other teams about "what we’re going to do next"
Couldn’t have asked for a better owner…

Averaged grade: 90/ A-
This is with some sense unlike ESPN’s horrible analysts. We have slowly put together an offseason that should be called good maybe even great. If there wasn’t so much hype about LBJ, Wade, and Bosh, everyone would call us winners. So, bottom line, this Nets offseason has been promising now we need to see it to translate on the court.

See you spent some time on it
Nice post, we had a great off season not the one we were hoping for but this season will be fun.
I somewhat agree
I’m really happy about our teams recent changes. The Nets, however, spent some of their money unwisely. Although, the Morrow and Farmar signings were great deals, the Nets greatly overpaid for Travis Outlaw and Petro. I would give us a B+ because of our coaching staff, owner, draft, and this trade. Nevertheless, those two signings have the potential to be very big mistakes. Hopefully, we can reach a #7 seed in the playoffs, because I would rather be in the lottery again than have consecutive #8 seed seasons like at the end of the Kidd, Jefferson, and Carter age.
I would change the Troy Murphy grade to 45/100
Change Morrow to 95/100
Add Outlaw 65/100
Add Petro 55/100
and you should end up with something around 70 as an average.
Our choice of coaching staff FORCED us to DRASTICALLY overpay for a group of players who will make ABSOLUTELY no difference in our ability to compete with the top teams in the East for the FORESEEABLE future, so that grade should NOT be higher than a 60 under ANY circumstances.

Our choice of coaching staff caused the big name free agents to view this team with UTTER distrust, and even caused the second tier free agents to look elsewhere without so much as a SECOND THOUGHT!

Yea actually he did
Wade, Bosh and those crap load of great role players had no factor in the decision actually. Spolestra is a way better coach than that guy who has the best coaching record of all time.
It's a meh offseason.
Not to mention irrelevant to the overall goal.
World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.
Solid Post
But could use some changes and expansion, if you’re going to grade an off-season, grade all of it, not just the major moves.
1) Drafting Favors – A-/B+
Favors has legitimate star PF potential with his mix of athleticism and size. He actually is more of a refined scorer than I expected after watching his final summer league game but I love this pick on his potential alone. Should contribute immediately. If Cousins becomes a superstar, could be a mistake.
2) Drafting James – A
For the spot the Nets picked him, they could have gotten the steal of the draft. Works hard, is athletic, good rebounder for his size and should provide the Nets bench with energy any time he steps of the floor. Should have been picked 7-8 spots earlier and is a good value pick.
3) Signing Avery Johnson – A-/B+
Coach with the highest winning percentage comes to the Nets. Preaches defense and hard work and should make the Nets more disciplined. Only true concern is how demanding he is of his players and how it destroyed his situation in Dallas. Furthermore, one has to wonder how much control he has over Billy King; if he is Larry Brown 2.0 (Charlotte Bobcats version), we could have problems
4) Signing Sam Mitchell, Larry Krystowiak, Popeye Jones; Retaining John Loyer and Tom Barrise – A
A former coach of the year as lead assistant, former head coach as the number 2, good rebounding big man coach in Jones and two guys who the remaining players are familiar with in Loyer and Barrise. Good moves.
5) Signing Jordan Farmar – A- /B+
Two-time champion PG comes to NJ. Finally, he gets a chance to showcase his skills outside of the triangle offense. Attitude concerns may come to fruition but hopefully AJ will keep him in line. Furthermore, is he that much of an upgrade over Dooling?
6) Signing Anthony Morrow – A
Arguably the best shooter in the NBA comes to the Nets. Should help solve some of the Nets scoring woes and should make them more potent off the bench. Furthermore, his contract is reasonable and he could end up being very underpaid in three years.
7) Signing Travis Outlaw – B-/C+
Question marks come with this move. Very clutch scorer and is extremely athletic. However, was he overpaid? Potentially, even though his contract was essentially the MLE. Considering he has never started previously, expect a spike in his overall numbers. Yet, Outlaw is most definitely replaceable and is probably filling a hole until the Nets look to make a move for an impact swingman.
8) Signing Johan Petro – B-/C+
Good backup center, yet he may have been overpaid. Young and athletic, however, and he could be a very steady backup. Has size and length. Is also replaceable as he is a backup C.
9) Traded Yi Jianlian to Washington for Quinton Ross – B
Yi never really fit in here and was terrible next to Lopez. He has all the skills and should ideally be a legitimate scoring threat. However, he is inconsistent, oft-injured and seems weak mentally. Could he have been a cheap, good backup PF? Maybe, but he would have never really fit in here in the long-run. I had high hopes but I was ultimately disappointed. This a B because his potential could make this look ugly.
10) Signing Ben Uzoh, Sean May, Brian Zoubek – Indifferent
None will get any significant minutes and they may not even make the team. Uzoh has the most potential because of his size and speed at the PG position. Taking a flier on May makes sense and provides competition with Humphries for that final big man spot. Zoubek is nothing besides offensive rebounding, was unhappy with this signing from the beginning. At least has a winning pedigree at Duke
11) Expansion of Nets Management – A+
May have been one of the sole reasons the Nets lost more games than they should have last season. Keeping Roy Rogers as an advance scout and bringing in Bob Ferry makes a lot of sense and should help give the coaches more time to focus on their players. Will most definitely make the Nets better in the long-term. Thank you Prohkorov.
12) Traded Courtney Lee for Troy Murphy – A-/B+
Excellent move for the team in the short and long term. Provides a legitimate starting NBA 4 and provides insurance for Favors (even though I thought he could have started regardless). Losing Lee frees up any sort of potential issue at the 2-3 and moves T. Will into the starting lineup. Furthermore, Murphy has a $12 million expiring contract, is a New Jersey native and an excellent rebounder. Injury concerns hurt this deals rating.
What’s next? I could see the Nets re-signing Jarvis Hayes as an insurance policy at the swingman position. I have always liked Jarvis Hayes, his game and most importantly his professionalism. Provides the Nets with a good veteran presence in the locker room, which is something they desperately need.
Harris/Farmar/Uzoh
Williams/Morrow/Hayes
Outlaw/James
Murphy/Favors/Humphries
Lopez/Petro
That looks like a team right there, at least good enough to compete for a 6-7-8 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Overall Offseason Grade – B+
The Nets lost out on the big name free agents but still walked away with a very good coaching staff, two young prospects in Favors and James, a much improved bench and an overall deeper team. Furthermore, they still have cap flexibility even with the Murphy trade, as next season they could have $20 million in cap room. Also, they did not give up any draft picks and still have them as tradeable assets.
Does going to the playoffs hurt their draft prospects? Definitely, but if they want to make a serious push at someone like Carmelo Anthony or Chris Paul, they have to make the playoffs. Plus, from a morale standpoint, it’s a necessity.
Solid off-season, I’m looking forward to the upcoming season. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Nets in the press this much in one off-season ever. Especially coming off a 12-win season.
it's up to Avery
as of now, only four of the 15 players under contract have played together—Lopez, Harris, TWill and Humphries. So creating a team out of that diverse mix of talents will be a real challenge, particularly on the defensive side.
