Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Stefan Bondy clarifies a bit of the name change issue in his blog Tuesday.

It turns out that the league requires an early notice from a team that it's thinking of a name change. That doesn't necessarily mean the team is planning one. That decision would have to be approved by the NBA Board of Governors.

And yes, the team would need to inform the league even if it was merely changing the name from "New Jersey Nets" to "Brooklyn Nets" or "New York Nets", both of which it holds trademarks on.

Prokhorov should allow Nets fans to vote for the name

that’d be a good way to do so since this idea is pretty unpopular amongst Nets fans.

I’m down with “The New York Nets”.

We agree Dollar Bills

If the move must happen and it appears that it does – this would at least preserve our history and restore what once was to a degree when the team was the amongst the class of the ABA.

I like both NY Nets and Brooklyn Nets

if I had to make a decision, it would be Brooklyn Nets, only because I feel its time again that Brooklynites deserve their own team. I like Brooklyn. Got family there.

I also like NY Nets a lot though. I can picture a nice retro old school type logo with NY Nets. A Brooklyn Nets logo I would think would be more modern. I like old school better. Also, NY Nets sounds smoother.

New York Nets would be sending a true messgae to the Knicks

Even I can admit this. Brooklyn would e exlusionary towards one borough and possibly Long Island and would always be viewed as an also-ran to the Knicks. I’m not saying calling them “New York” alone would make this team supplant the Knicks in the minds of the city but it would be a start.

by IsaacNJN on Aug 10, 2010 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

we owe them one anyway

for this:

However, they got a rude surprise when the NBA forced the Nets to pay an additional $4.8 million directly to the Knicks for “invading” the New York area. Coming on the heels of the $3.2 million that the team had to pay for joining the NBA, this left Boe short of cash, and he was forced to renege on a promised pay raise for Erving. Erving refused to play for the Nets under these conditions, leaving Boe no choice but to sell Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers for $3 million—roughly the same amount they had to pay for NBA membership.

This was done before I was born, but it pisses me off as a Nets fan.

This is why I want to crush the Knicks.

5 million to the Knicks for invading their territory…scumbags

NY Nets

I’d like to see a name change to the NY Nets as well. That being said, I do think it would be great to have an alternate home jersey that reads “Brooklyn.”

by Delacratic on Aug 10, 2010 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

Im not sure if that's possible.

That would mean the Knicks can go on the road as “Manhattan.” I would like to know if we can do that though. Sounds like a good idea.

Manhattan???

Contrary to popular belief and history, Manhattan relies on the surrounding boroughs to keep it afloat. That is why they annexed Brooklyn, Queens and everything else surrounding them.

And NY is Brooklyn. I think the Nets will be officially named the NY NETS. But just like teams having different styled caps + uniforms nowadays… You will probably see “Brooklyn” popping up here and there and everywhere, if it’s deemed marketable…

…as i’ve said before, that the Nets use the gray road unis that we wore during the finals years as one of their alternate jerseys so that they can still shout out the NJ based Net fans. I doubt they’d go that far for us though, but seeing as how those gray unis represent a time where the Nets were playing a brand of fast paced, exciting, championship level basketball, it would be good to pay homage to that.

and please keep the red white and blue.

I cant think of a better name then the Nets… All of the newer teams, the younger teams have pretty stupid names in my opinion.

Someone needs to get on it and do a youtube of the history of the franchise, showing the good old days from Drazen, Dr. J, Kidd, all in one video.

You think so? I disagree… it falls right in line with the other teams I like no less, Jets, Mets… etc. Thats another reason I want the name to stay, although that reason is strictly personal and I wouldn’t expect others to hop on board, but the HISTORY!

And yes, the Thunder is a stupid name, as are the rest of some of the younger teams, or new name changes, like Wizards, Heat, Magic, Bobcats, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Bucks… etc. I like all the older team names, they are timeless.

New York Nets all the way baby!

After I got over the disappointment of them moving I’ve been for this name. It’s a part of their history. I would hate to se them pigeon hole the team (again) by marketing them to another subset of the NY metro market. Take the whole damn market! Use side nicknames to market to Brooklyn like the Yankees do with the Bronx Bombers… the Brooklyn Ballers! If they change “Nets” I’m really going to be ticked, but I still don’t believe they are stupid enough to give up the history of this team. It’s not the Celtics or Lakers, but it’s still pretty great.

by Netted on Aug 10, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

Good point

I’ve always been in favor of Brooklyn Nets, but you raise a real good point about going with NY, but using Brooklyn in the same way that the Yankees use Bronx Bombers. Lots of marketing possibilities there.

by nynjlawyer on Aug 10, 2010 6:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

No name change!!!

The Nets were a team that was passed on from my father. My Father was a NETS fans. He followed the Nets in the ABA where they were champions… He followed them during their dark years, as did I, and i waited 20+ years for the NETS to make it to the NBA finals. The only acceptable names to me, would be Brooklyn Nets, NY Nets, or a return to New York Americans, Our original name for one year. I hope that Mr. Prokorov understands that the majority of us are NETS fans and we do not want a name change. What can we do? can we start a petition? should we write the NETS? I seriously do not want a name change… SO whats our best course of action?

Some people say “well most of your years were in the dumps” so you could “start new”; i dont want to start anew…. If he insists on a name change then leave the history in Jersey cause i might not follow… Dr. J was a NET, Kidd was a NET, Petrovic was a NET and Brooklyn will allow the Nets to rise out of the swamp and no longer be the Clippers East.

Please Mr. Prokhorov: dont change the NETS name!!!

Well the intention was to be the New York Americans

they never played a game under that name and instead did it New Jersey. So the thought was there, but they never technically were the New York Americans. But I probably wouldn’t mind that either as it would be a nod to the days at the Teaneck Armory. However, I highly doubt they would use that name for a team they plan on taking global.

by Netted on Aug 10, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

The Americans were supposed to play in a Manhattan Armory

but the Knicks pressured the city not to let them use it so they went instead to Teaneck, then Long Island, then back to Piscataway and East Rutherford.

If the only reason to discuss a name change

is because it’s so close to nyet, then I think the only reasonable thing to do is change the Russian language. Has to be something better than nyet to say no.

In Dutch net means exactly. Which is pretty cool!

by Netted on Aug 10, 2010 5:45 PM EDT reply actions

The biggest mistake they could do is

change the name if they want a global team because one of the things that attracts people to a team is their history. Even if their history is obscure and needs to be re-packaged and polished. The Nets were an ABA title winner. The fact they came from another league and are in the NBA and competing for a championship is the kind of thing they’ll like. They shouldn’t want to disassociate themselves from Petrovic, Kidd or Dr. J.

Being a brand new team that changes it’s name just to score points with people in other markets isn’t the type of thing I think people will want to rally around. They’ll feel like they are being played rather than discovering something themselves.

As the story indicates, it could be a long time before any decision is made as part of the reason for the long notice is for marketing.

I doubt if the Nickname is expected to change as the “Nets” name is is already well known.

I wonder if the Seattle Sonics had time to give the NBA 25 months notice? And I wonder if anyone knows how long before the start of the season that Oklahoma City officially submitted the Thunder name for approval? If someone can answer that question, we might have an idea how many more months (yrs) we have to wait until a decision has to be made?

by jerry25 on Aug 11, 2010 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

I personally prefer Brooklyn Nets (not just because I grew up there), but I think Proky is leaning towards New York Nets.

Why Brooklyn over New York
1. New York Nets sounds tooo much like the Knicks (Mets,Jets). I want it to be clear who they are talking about.
2. Been there, done that, for those around as long as me (Rick Barry days). As long as they don’t take away the Nets name, I don’t need to see New York before the Nets again.
3. Brooklyn is more SEXY than New York. At least the media are giving Brooklyn a good name these days. With all the free publicity, Proky may start to prefer Brooklyn over New York.
4. Nets and Brooklyn would have their own identity, as with the Dodgers.

Why New York over Brooklyn:
1. Proky prefers the Global name of New York, although Brooklyn should be well known too, for its Russian population.
2. The Brooklyn name would be risky as to alienate the non-Brooklyn New York area community.

Ultimately winning (playoffs) during these next 2 years would be most important. Nets first have to retain NJ fans, and only winning will do that.

Nobody, I me NOBODY, gives the Nets a chance to make the playoffs. If they surprise, Proky will be a genius and Brooklyn Nets would get a huge boost.

Brooklyn Nets is perfect. i think it should be brooklyn nets because every other borough has their own team except for brooklyn, calling them the brooklyn nets would make it just brooklyns team, calling them the new york nets would lump them together with the knicks, jets, mets, and so on, they need to be thier own independent team if they wanna be takin seriously
