Yormark: Prokhorov "Excited" About Boxing at Barclays
In an interview Sunday with Tony Paige, WFAN's boxing expert, Brett Yormark says the Nets organization is committed long term to boxing at Barclays Center and kick-boxing enthusiast Mikhail Prokhorov is "really excited" about it.
It's the first time Prokhorov, who owns 45% of the arena, has been linked to other events planned for Brooklyn.
Prokhorov "loves boxing. It's in his wheelhouse," said Yormark, mixing sports metaphors. "It's something he's really excited about." Yormark recently concluded a deal with Golden Boy Promotions that will bring boxing matches to Barclays Center on a monthly basis starting in 2012. Yormark said it's "essential" that Barclays book 200-plus events a year at the arena and noted beyond basketball, the arena will feature boxing, concerts, college hockey and family shows.
Yormark did the interview Sunday from Las Vegas where he had watched Brooklyn's Danny Jacobs lose the WBO middleweight title to Russia's Dmitry Pirog. Ironic much?

I couldn't care less about these guys getting more money...
What I do care about is this putting Brooklyn back on the map as a Mecca for boxing… And hopefully putting boxing back where it should be in the headlines.

Boxing allowed to be back in NY?
I haven’t been into boxing for more than a decade now, so I don’t know the latest news.
