Favors Breaks Out as Nets Beat Celtics
The Nets finished Summer League at 3-2 after a 86-68 victory over the Celtics in Orlando on Friday.
The Nets wound up with more balanced scoring as Terrence Williams (calf) played just five minutes and Damion James (wrist) sat out. Their absence didn't prevent them from being named to first team, all-Summer League.
But it was Derrick Favors who stood out, scoring a game-high 23 points (17 in the first half) and grabbing 11 rebounds, while committing just four fouls and not turning the ball over once in 28 minutes.
Favors wowed those in attendance with post moves, monster dunks and jump shots. The Nets shot 49 percent from the field and outrebounded the Celtics 45-27. Starting for James, Brandon Heath hit three of his five attempts from 3-point range and finished with 16 points and six assists.

You guys notice what I said earlier?
Huge huge dunk, no chest pounding, no nothing. Not really a bad trait for me, I’m with the Popovich way of thinking. As long as he gets the job done, I’ve no need flashy anything
Hard Work
He’s all about it!!!!!!

I don't know about own the boards, but be decent at least
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves again with one game
It depends on how he adjusts and how his mind keeps up with it
People forget, Dwight Howard was also being pushed around when he first got into the league. He didn’t go in with that body. Him being pushed around was what motivated him to be as strong as he is now.
Derrick still definitely needs to get stronger, needs to gain more experience with playing time and different situations, and needs to work on his fundamentals in terms of boxing out and defensive discipline.
There are few
Coaches that will aid his development in those areas like Avery Johnson has the ability to do.
One interesting thing to think about
Could Avery sacrifice the development of some young guys because of the pressure on us to make the playoffs?
Interesting question
in light of his recent remarks that by missing out on big FA Nets may have to speed up development of Favors I think he’ll give him time to learn through mistakes without yanking him after every air-ball.
there should be NO pressure to make the playoffs
Just the pressure of playing hard, and getting better. That is the goal
Prokho already got made a fool of in free agency, I’ll be ticked if there is some kind of edict thrown down that puts a meaningless playioff beating at the hands of the Superteam ahead of development. I don’t care if we finish 20-62, as long as Lopez, Lee, Williams, Favors, and James are better in April than they are now.

Not at all
Avery will let the guys play, and teach when the opportunity arise.
Favors is stronge and you can his chest can be developed. When ppl speak of him, they use the word, prototype. I think he will be the best player on the team(not now).
Favors reminds me of Dwight for the same reasons
by SportsFanatic88 on Jul 9, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions
But that's the thing if he's gonna be like that, that's a whole lot of time in the gym
He may be able to jump as high as Dwight, and have the same measurements as Dwight, but no one in the NBA comes close to Dwight’s muscles right now. That’s the key difference. He’s not only leaping ability, he’s incredible strength too. Which is why no matter how close anyone comes to resembling Dwight, no one’s gonna replicate him probably.
he doesn't have to be Dwight
he has to be Derrick Favors.

why?
Howard was the same size and same age as Favors in the summer before their rookie year. Vertical leap and other measures of athleticism are virtually identical.
Favors look BIG today
I like Favors better than Howard. Favors has the potential to be much more polished offensively. Howard is more explosive around the basket than Favors.
I kept looking at Favors and thinking that he was a more athletic version of Patrick Ewing.
Ya think so?

He got the ball in game 4 as well
He was just coming up short on his shots and turning the ball over. The reason we got down 20 was we were force feeding him. Just like any rookie you don’t want to get too high or too low.
If we had given up on Terrence Williams in January like many wanted to, April and his explosion including a triple double doesn’t happen
Someone must've been online and told him what was being said about him
Derrick: “How’s this for passive?!” SLAM
favors is a great finisher….but he needs someone to pass it to him.

When t.will and d.james gets off the ball, he can play. They need to pass. thats why it looks like he sucks, thats what happens when you pass to derrick. You get a beast
Few observations
- Favors jump hooks are more advanced than Brook’s. He can do it with both hands.
- He lacks confidence but seems very comfortable on the court.
- He is tad lazy on offensive glass. Just standing and looking. Should be able to get more offensive boards.
If he can work on his confidence, jumper and body, he can be as good or better as Bosh in couple of years.
Ambidextrous = asset
That was one of the notes on him in high school, since he could just jump over everybody, he never really boxed out. He needs to work on that in this level, he’s not getting easy boards anymore
solid post tony
I’ve noticed the jump hooks too. Very smooth and he can use both hands.

where kv?
I know you can’t make too much of one game, but that was impressive.
Hey, unfortunately I missed the first part of the game
when all the excitement happened. The thunderous dunk at the end of the first half was just that, a dunk, with him waiting at the freethrow line for the set up. I have no doubt the guy can dunk, he clearly has practiced that his whole life.
The part of the game I didn’t see much to get excited about. But from what others have to say at least some intensity and aggression was there. That is ALL that I want.

Not downplaying it at all. Just not one of those Net fans that thinks that the only thing one can or should say is: All the Nets are fantastic!
I said: I didn’t see most of the first half which is what everyone is excited about.
I said: What i did see didn’t excite me.
And I didn’t say he was a bust. What I have said is that he has Bust-potential. And this is for mental, emotional, disposition reasons. I can’t really comment on play I haven’t seen. If all he did was dunk and shoot jumphooks, these are things I KNEW that he could do. He was playing against chumps, he should be able to do these things against chumps. The whole thing with Favors is whether he has the focus and intensity to do them against people just as big and just as athletic as he is, in other words, not as a bully.

We Need Pass First Guards
Favors and Lopez should get touches on nearly every possession.
Harris needs to play like Avery said he was in Dallas.. like Rondo.
T.Williams needs to not shoot and not turn the ball over.
If we don’t get Farmar (who I’m not a huge fan of), I think we target Will Bynum, Kyle Lowry and Shaun Livingston.

Lopez and Favors should touch the ball every possession. Yes indeed.
Well, Devin and T-Will are going to have to get them the ball or they will sit. Avery is the perfect coach for this team.

He has to improve his jump shot as well, in terms of speed of release
If you saw the highlights, his first jump shot took ages to get out of his hands. That’s gonna be a block in the pros
With his
jump and wingspan, it will not be easy to block his shots though I agree that he needs to work on his jumper and he himself said that as well as Avery.

One thing about the "he broke out because TWill is gone" thinking that I will contest is
his work on the boards and his lack of fouls and turnovers.
He wasn’t the strongest rebounder in college and he struggled with turnovers. We saw some of that in his previous games. His teammates have nothing to do with that on the most part.
I still think his rebounding deficiencies stem from a lack of boxing out, a lot of times he seems to just try and jump for it (like he did in high school where he was twice as big as everyone and didn’t need to box out). Maybe due to a lack of intensity/involvement with the game as well, he’s not always involved in every scrum for the ball.
He wasn’t the most foul prone guy in college, but here he seems to have trouble with biting on fakes and getting called for the foul. Doesn’t help that the summer league refs call EVERYTHING. He’s gotten a lot of cheap fouls so far. He still has to be more discipline defensively. He has to learn to stay on the ground and stay in position for the rebound instead of jumping and trying to block the shot. May be part of why he doesn’t grab more boards as well.
Then again, is his thing just that he isn’t a quick adjuster? He wasn’t ready for the physicality of the NCAA at the beginning, but towards the end and 20 lbs later, he was vastly improved. May be same thing here.

Spike Lee
Nice interview by Spike Lee.
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5366960&categoryid=2459788
He says what I said in the previous post. This whole Labron drama was staged. They’ve decided to play with each other long time ago but dragged unsuspecting teams through the process virtually killing our chances at other FAs. I think it would have been the plan. Not to allow any other team to be strong so that they can dominate divided teams. Shame on all three of them and Pat Rally.
Cleveland should file tampering charges
And the league should conduct a thorough, independent investigation. If that was staged that means that Heat officials had to have been involved well before this summer. There is no way that Riley and others within that organization were left in the dark about what was happening.
i think the idea of having a “superteam” is lame but if they wanted to get together, cool. Just don’t suck other teams into this business because that’s basically sabotage. The Bulls may not have signed Boozer to that kind of deal if it wasn’t for Lebron’s camp playing games.
Wow. I really can’t believe the NBA has an actual “heel” team now. They better watch their backs when they have to travel to Cleveland.

Lot of learning.
He already is more NBA ready than Yi! But, the Nets need to bring him along slow. I think he’ll even be behind KHump for the first month or so. They will pick their spots (against Yi! Against the Knicks! Against teams/players that don’t play hard d) and let him have a taste. There is no rush because we are not competing for anything. There are 6 teams (Miami through the Bucks) that are playoff bound. We will be on the edge of the group that could make it if we get a player during the season. We are a 35 win team, tops, even with the two or three puny moves that Thorn has left. Why kill the kid? Let him grow and gain confidence. He will go from the third guy to the first maybe by Xmas.
And as to Spike and the conspiracy people: Lebron ain’t that smart! And if they planned it, it did not work b/c Chicago got a lot stronger and NY got better. Besides they did not know if they could clear all that cap. I believe Wade and Riley sold it last week. But, who cares? I can’t stand Lebron. He is not a tough minded leader and knows he need Wade to close the deal. So, at least he knows he’s no Jordan, Kobe, or the other tough leaders that will wins. He died this year in the playoffs and last and can’t carry a team. He is A-Rod and needs Jeter.

at least they haven’t fallen off the map
WOJ!
Tyrus Thomas has reached agreement on 5-year, $40 million offer sheet with New Jersey, league source tells Y! Bobcats have 7 days to match.
It's just highlights. Stromile Swift had many of em, look how he turned out.
Plus, this guy had some problems with Skiles.
Decent contract
For all that’s been said about these contracts, even if Tyrus and Outlaw don’t out, these are MOVABLE contracts. Given their age and potential, a 7-8 million dollar deal is not that difficult to move
not bad at all

Reading the thread title quickly, "Favors Breaks..."
My heart skipped a beat. I thought Derrick broke a bone. Darn you NetsDaily! ;) lol
I don't want to make the playoffs next year
At this point, I’ve taken a deep breath, had a few drinks and gotten over the entire free agency fiasco. As a result, I have bought into the entire rebuilding movement and have come to grips with the signings of Outlaw, Thomas (assuming the Bobcats don’t match), etc.
Therefore, at this stage I say let the young kids develop, take their lumps and get better over time. I also hope that we DON’T make the playoffs next year and position ourselves to have a realistic chance at the Number One pick next year (I know, I know, we can’t hitch our trailer to ping pong balls, but hopefully we will be in the top four again next year to realistically have a shot). IF, Harrison Barnes is as good as advertised and IF we were lucky enough to get him, a front court of Barnes, Favors and Lopez could be absolutely devastating for over a decade.
Well no harm is us offering, if anything it would be good for us to offer a huge contract
Destroy their cap, that’s one less team out of the way
It would be terrible if Riley can convince Haslem to play for the minimum.

I cannot see it happening. They wouldnt have Bird rights next year on Haslem so they could not promise him a big payday next year either.
The thing is Haslem is the hidden heart and soul of the Heat, and he is VERY self-sacrificing. I really hope he leaves them, just for him and his brand of basketball.

Not just to mess with Riley, but to weaken a opponent. If the Heat doesn’t have Haslem the chances the Heat will be able to defend the post will be dramatically reduced, and that means defend Lopez as well. It doesn’t mean make a ridiculous offer, it means, just get Haslem away from the Heat.

Grade Favors Twill James Summer league
to me Favors C- i love favors for one reason he tries and doesnt quit and continues doing things hes not good at For examples His jumper was TERRIBLE in the summer league and what did he do continue shooting jumpers so he can get into a grove same thing with his left hand hook shot, the only problem with favors is he is inconsistent
He played bad in the first half in first gm and then played good 2nd half played good in 2nd gm then 3rd gm TERRIBLE 4GM TERRIBLE and 5th gm played amazing
to me this kid is going to be a amazing player i see he is willing to do whatever to become a great player
