James Scores 30 as the Nets Beat the Magic

Damion James was the star for the Nets as they picked up their second straight Summer League win, a 94-91 victory over the Magic on Wednesday. James scored 30 points 9-for-18 from the field and 9-for-11 from the line, connecting on three of his five attempts from 3-point range. Terrence Williams added 22 points and six assists, as the Nets turned the ball over just six times all game. Derrick Favors struggled to make an impact, scoring just four points and committing seven fouls in 26 minutes. The Nets trailed by two at halftime, but took control with a 25-18 third quarter. The Magic came back late and had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final seconds, but Joe Crawford stepped on the sideline before they could get a shot off. In a mid-game interview with NBA TV, Avery Johnson called James the Nets' best player of Summer League thus far.

We need a starting PF

Favors just isn’t getting it done in Summer league and just look whats going to happend in the NBA season. This isnt like Frank or Kiki, Avery will bench him if he doesnt progress. Derrick has been a huge dissapointment thus far. I wish we could have drafted Wesley Johnson and then got a PF in free agency!

favors should be good

but he will most likely stink for at least the first 1/2 of the season. we’d better get scola

by drmagoo on Jul 7, 2010 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

We better get somebody.

Cause he will stink for the 1st 1/2, maybe even more. He can still be Duncan btw, just not any time soon.

by demens on Jul 7, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Why ????

Let him get alot of playing time and develop this year, then next year Favors will be alot better and we can get another Lottery Pick…..

by NetFan48 on Jul 8, 2010 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Duncan struggled, when? He won rookie of the year.

by Jon Fath on Jul 7, 2010 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

We all knew Favors is going to need to some work. But it’s nice to see some flashes of what he could be.

by R-D on Jul 7, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I wanted DeMarcus Cousins and didn't think we could pass on him.

But we did.

Favors is going to be an NBA player, but his offense isn’t good and it’s going to take some time. Cousins will be a moose right away.

Have you watched SL so far?

His offense is definitely better then i thought, but its pretty much on par with his defense at this point. I dont think that is a good thing. He has been a total non factor on D., as a rebounder or as a shot blocker.

Favors

Derek is a mans man, Avery will challange him and give him the ball. If you guys didn’t notice his strength and potential, do us all a favor and relax and whatch the kid help out.

Avery and same are perfect coachs for Derek. Things are looking up for the nets, even if they don’t land LeBron.

I hope you're npt a coach or a teacher, Randy.

This is his first week of summer league, for crying out loud.. He’s expected to be good when he’s 20. He’s 18 now. Settle down and let the kid get his feet wet.

Imagine if we judged T-Will this early last year!

Hell imagine if we judged him as early as a few months into the season last year!

Favors ia tough to watch...

Patience Andy!

I am pleasantly surprised...

I hope James can continue to play like this during the regular season. When we drafted him I didn’t expect him to put up these numbers, I thought he was going to be another antoine wright… but I am glad that he proved me wrong so far. I like how he can put the ball in the basket, and have a inside and outside game.

I think we need a couple of more shooters on our team.
The salary cap is set at 58 mil, does anyone know exactly how much we can spend?

wow. zoubek sucks. im glad we didn’t buy a 2nd round pick to get him

+1

But this was pretty obvious from his college game. I didn’t get why people wanted him.
Just a dime-a-dozen D-league plowhorse…at best.
I’m sure some Duke alum can give him a no-show job and he’ll be fine.

Favors

You guys can’t call him garbage when he got 4 shots all game with ridiculous foul calls going against him all day. I’m not saying Favors is a superstar but our second pick CANT go through a summer league game and not get touches. I don’t care how raw he is on offense, everyone else can develop later. Anytime he gets position in the post, he NEEDS to get the ball. I’m tired of the selfish guards (TWill mostly) waving him away. Get him the rock, if he doesn’t put up numbers while consistently getting touches all game, then you can say he’s too raw. Right now, he’s not getting the ball and these summer league refs SUCK.

I was really disappointed in T-Williams. He’s gonna be a great player but I hope they “rest” him for the rest of the week. I don’t care about wins and losses. I don’t care about stats. I just want our young players to improve. T-Williams playing PG and trying to score every time down isn’t helping anyone.

Same excuses as before huh

Georia Tech guard not getting him the ball, Summer league guards not getting him the ball. At what point can we talk about mr. Favors taking some responsibility huh?

by demens on Jul 7, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah what the heck!!

This is summer league!!! he needs to be cut!! But make sure to sign pat ewing jr he is a beast look he scored 11 pts today!!!!

Im not worrying one bit till late mid season to even debate favors

If we get nobody I’ll be pissed they traded Yi, and wonder why they didnt wait till they had a comittment. Ray Allen should have been a net… If he had only slipped a little we would have had him before kittles.

by pmj180 on Jul 7, 2010 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

No FA was ever coming to Newark...

Keep building and wait until we are in Brooklyn. That’s the right thing to do.

Forget Lee and sign guys to one or two year deals.

by rundmc00 on Jul 7, 2010 9:05 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   1 recs

Proky wants playoffs for next year. Getting Lee would accomplish that.

Not getting Lee wouldn’t. It would embarrass Proky.
Proky would be firing Thorn if he didn’t quit already.

Gotta agree that Newark is a deal-breaker for top-tier free agents.
Not that it should be, but it just is.
That’s the outlook of a young, professsional athlete.

Um hello?

This thread is about Damion James. He was stellar tonight. Can we go 1 thread without discussing lebron? I think T-Will is kind of out of control with his shot selection. He needs to pass to favors more, in my view.

Let’s hope they do sign Lee. I think he’s actually a very good player. Lineup of:

Harris / Ridnour?
C. Lee / Nate Robinson?
D. James / RJ? / Miller?
D. Lee / Favors
Lopez / nice backup

has potential to be a playoff contender.

Favors needs to be more assertive on offense and rebounding. Popeye better teach the boy something.

by power_njerz on Jul 7, 2010 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

not a fan of clee

Anyone think he was horrible with the ball with the shot clock running out? Twill should get all the time he wants.

by pmj180 on Jul 7, 2010 9:19 PM EDT reply actions

Easy to jump the gun

and blame a player when he’s being given the ball with 5 seconds left on the shot clock. It was a consistent theme along with compounding losses last season.

by Belarus4life on Jul 7, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

hopefully with twill at the 2

I like that we drafted guys wanting to play d. Good Job James!

by pmj180 on Jul 7, 2010 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

No ACW

Ur just ridiculous for thinking he would average 9 and five in year THREE! jeez some one get this guy a cup filled with faith! He’ll average 9 and 6 in year one easy especially if we don’t sign a PF

by NetsVC15 on Jul 7, 2010 10:50 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

So Demens and ACW

you use 3 summer league games against Favors but Turner is playing worse and he gets the benefit of the doubt?

Looks like the experts were right

Granted it’s still summer league, but James really looks to be NBA ready like the draftniks thought he was. I think he’ll have a great year coming off the bench.

by R-D on Jul 7, 2010 11:48 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Favors showed some positive things tonight though

I likeD the few offensive moves i’ve seen from him so far. He definitely needs to get used to the speed of the game though. Give him time. This is why I’m baffled as to why we aren’t at least trying to sign David Lee. Favors needs time to develop properly.

James is exactly what we need. Someone that can hit the 3, defends, and is aggressive going to the hoop.

Terrence had his moments but he shot the ball way too much today. Still, he looks so much crisper. Right now my biggest gripes with him is his decision making on both ends of the floor. He needs to become more of a leader defensively and offensively he needs to pick and choose his spots. I definitely think he needs to play two guard right now though. I like a combo of him and Damion off of the bench at the wings, but seeing that we won’t get an SF, who knows what will happen. Damion might have to start.

These guys are our future folks. We better root for them, because the front office isn’t bringing any help.
