Nets To Interview Pritchard?

David Aldridge of NBA.com reports that Kevin Pritchard, the leading free agent GM candidate, will interview for Rod Thorn's job, but that seems to be news to the Nets.

"I haven’t set up an interview with him," Rod Thorn told Dave D'Alessandro Tuesday evening. "But I may in the future."

Thorn also confirms that his No.2, Bobby Marks, is indeed a candidate, but Thunder GM Sam Presti says there's nothing to him being on the Nets' list. D'Alessandro writes that Avery Johnson is Thorn's partner in the search and that Johnson "could be the de facto GM, eventually, if the guy coming in is beholden to him for his job."

Pritchard, who was fired by one multi-billionaire on draft night, would get a chance to work for an even richer owner if hired. Pritchard is credited with transforming the Trailblazers from "Jailblazers" to one of the NBA's top young teams.  However, he gained a reputation as a difficult personality and Paul Allen unceremoniously dumped him hours before the draft.

That was something that was said in the national media

And was speculated as being part of the reason why he was let go from Portland. Just too cocky. Having said that, he was still able to pull off Camby for Outlaw and Blake at the deadline, in addition to several draft day trades this year. So perhaps not every GM thinks he’s a prick. As a Blazers fan I can say he will be missed. He was awesome, and extremely well respected amongst fans in Portland for having completely turned around the franchise. About the only thing that you can nit pick about is that yes he is a draft genius, but the jury is out on whether or not he can be an FA time consigliere.

by hkphooey on Jul 6, 2010 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

that's actually incorrect

Pritchard himself was never cocky; it was the media and people around him that overplayed his talents. He is actually quite humble and willing to share the credit. He was fired right before the draft and still worked it legitimately, trying his best to make the Blazers better despite knowing he was gone in a few hours. He is a consummate professional who deserves his reputation for turning around that awful Blazers franchise into a respectable (albeit somewhat injury-prone) team.

Chad Ford was recently on Bill Simmons’ podcast, and when Bill asked Chad to talk Blazers fans off the ledge for losing Pritchard, he told them “Jump”. To me, that speaks volumes about Pritchard’s abilities and the fact that he’s a commodity in this league. The Nets DEFINITELY have to lock him up as president. He can even bring Penn in as the “cap expert” and have Marks take over the GM seat. Win-win for everyone

I just gotta say, have been a *huge* PDX fan...

…have spent a ridiculous amount of time following the team, too much, lol…

…and while there have been reports that the best moves the Blazers pulled off were not because of KP, but the fantastic scouting dept. of PDX…

…it’s fair to say that the overall consensus of in depth PDX followers, and worst case view of KP…would be that he’d still be an excellent hire…and like I said…

…that is a “worst case” view, maybe he didn’t do as much as he was credited with…but honestly, from what I see, the consensus, insider view among those that follow him…

…is simply that Paul Allen is a little crazy…Al Davis-Lite….if the Nets get Pritchard…honestly…

…I wouldn’t worry about that hire at all

by irish3 on Jul 7, 2010 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I think we are saying the same thing

The media led everyone to believe that he was cocky. Frankly, I’m not sure anyone really knows outside of other GMs and Blazers staff. But I digress, the issue is, yes KP was widely successful in bringing in a group of players that were 1) outperformed expectations and 2) were solid citizens. Having said that, he also whiffed on a few things namely: Darius Miles reinstatement costing $9 million in cap space that could have brought a prime free agent, by the inability to move Raef LaFrentz’s expiring contract, by Oden’s health problems and missing out on Kevin Durant. Pros and cons.

I'de rather Presti

Pritchard is good, but every time Presti makes a move I’m impressed. The picks I don’t like turn out to be good players. Presti seems like the best in the NBA if the Nets can get him, they should.

Check this out from Wiki
* A deal prior to the 2006 NBA Draft which sent Sebastian Telfair and Theo Ratliff to the Boston Celtics in exchange for the #7 pick in that year’s draft and Raef LaFrentz.
    * A draft-day deal which sent Tyrus Thomas (the team’s draft choice at #4) and Viktor Khryapa to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for the #2 pick, LaMarcus Aldridge
    * A second draft-day deal which sent the #7 pick in the draft, Randy Foye, along with cash considerations, to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for the #6 pick, Brandon Roy. Roy would end up being named Rookie of the Year, and would be selected as an All-Star the following three seasons (2008, 2009, 2010).
    * A third draft-day deal in which the team acquired the rights to the #27 pick in the draft, Sergio Rodriguez, from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for cash.

After a year working outside of basketball, Pritchard became the coach and general manager of the Kansas City Knights of the ABA, which he led to a championship in 2001. Later, he was hired by San Antonio Spurs general manager R. C. Buford to be a scout in the Spurs’ organization, and two years later was hired by the Portland Trail Blazers as director of player personnel.

Cannot hurt interviewing the man, see what his personality is like, ask him why he was dumped, see how he reacts, ask him how he would shape the roster going forward if LeBron were here and if he weren’t, etc.

The one thing about Pritchard

It doesn’t seem as if he knows how to attract stars or to trade for them. He’s good at assembling a bevy of solid role players, but he didn’t demonstrate an ability to acquire stars. Thorn might be the opposite, ha.

I think it is fair to be mad about that pick if you are a PDX fan, fair to complain, fair to call it an error...

…I don’t think you can just say “everyone would have picked Oden!,” because there were a small minority that wouldn’t have…

…but seriously, the absolute consensus was Oden, absolute consensus, among the best minds in the biz…

…and on top of the fact, lol, again, huge PDX fan here…if you compare Oden’s stats, his Hollinger measurements this year…to Sam Bowie…

…honestly, even this year, before he got hurt, admittedly, but even this past year…Oden projected to absolute stud, if you don’t know that, its just bc you don’t follow the team…

…but Oden was putting up #’s and Defensive play, that honestly, 15 games into the season…would have still had people picking him over Durant…he was that dominant in limited minutes…

…lol, fair to say, no one would trade Durant for Oden right now….but the book is not closed on that one….

….and compare stats on Bowie and Oden in there first 50 games played, no lie, it goes like this…

Oden>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bowie

The more of an "event" he makes it

the more I think he’s staying with the Cavs. Everyone is saying he’d feel guilty leaving the Cavs, and if he went on National TV or on Twitter and announced something like “I’m going to the NETS!” after all the buildup that would be such a huge spit in the face of Cleveland. If he did all of this garbage to announce that he's staying put..

….I hope to god he never wins anything. By staying in Cleveland, he pretty much guarantees that.

but on the other hand

and I hope this doesn’t get flagged as not family friendly, but wouldn’t him going on national tv and saying he’s signing with the nets basically be the personification of Prokhy dropping his nuts on Dolans face.

But he did say that we’d get shut out in FA, and he could be right.

This just doesn’t make any sense.

I don't mind

I don’t really care for any of the FAs out there, but sheesh. This will leave a bad taste in our mouths because we could have already gone after other guys before the market prices went through the roof.

From DD
It’s still a little hairy out there. Two more rumors were floating around tonight – Devin Harris and Derrick Favors for Chris Paul; and a Nets signing of David Lee – but both were flattened by a Nets official who said, "Where do they come up with this?"

God sent us a Prokhorov, an Avery, and a FAVORS!!!!.

I thought I saw that or read that somewhere.

I could be wrong but it would look pretty bad for Lebron’s image to take a giant dump on the Cavs and Cleveland by saying he’s leaving while broadcasting live from Cleveland.

Pritchard

The one complaint that I would have with Pritchard is he was tough making trades. He overvalued his young talent some times as there were plenty of people who wanted Aldridge and other young talent and it seemed like he was reluctant to pull the trigger.
