Bower Removes Himself from Consideration for Nets Job
Less than 24 hours after Pistons president Joe Dumars released a statement saying that he wasn't interested in replacing Rod Thorn, Hornets GM Jeff Bower released a statement of his own.
"I appreciate the interest shown by the New Jersey Nets to discuss the opportunity with me to head up their basketball operations," Bower said. "At this time, however, it is not the right fit for the Nets or myself. I remain focused on improving our Hornets roster on a daily basis."
Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Bower and other candidates are "uneasy working with new Nets coach Avery Johnson, whom sources say is trying to gather front-office power for himself."

Great news!
Hopefully they formed a good relationship in the interview so that they can eventually talk trade with Paul

Good
Not a big fan of Bower… let’s get Sam Presti or Kevin Prtichard in the chair ASAPP
Get Presti
and everything else will fall into place…

YES!
Is it down to Presti or Marks barring a surprise candidate?
by J-Kay on Jul 6, 2010 2:55 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Presti has already turned down other offers
He is in a situation that he wants to finish obviously because Portland would have rewarded him financially but he didn’t budge.

Apparently
Bower was afraid of Avery

Good news.
His drafting has been awful.
God sent us a Prokhorov.

Bullet dodged...
WTF is Pritchard not being given consideration? There must be something we don’t know about that he did wrong to get fired from Portland because nobody’s even mentioning him for any jobs.

His poor relationship with Paul Allen was the killer
A GM with bad relationships is not a good thing. If you haven’t noticed, being a GM is probably one of the more political positions in the NBA. Its a popularity contest. The better you are with people around the league, the better shot you have of getting deals done.
If he starts getting all crazy with the players again, especially with a team this young, dump him
He’s a good coach, but I won’t stand for it if he still can’t work well with players
But Dave D. has written that the allegations from NO were totally false.
And Avery has proved that he is interested in money, by accepting a relatively low 3 year offer from Nets.
With Thorn in charge, Avery had no problem. In Rod we Trust.
However, without Rod, I don’t blame Avery for wanting someone competent or else give Avery a say at the table.

I disagree with this. Avery had a bad feeling about that man from his interview. Why would he want him to come to the Nets. I support Avery for speaking out. If he in fact did that.

I support it

Maybe Avery Johnson got his wish and Bowers bowed out, knowing he wasn't going to get an offer.
Unfortunately, the media will play this like No One Wants to go to The Nets, when the opposite is true.
Unfortunately I am concerned that this may be delaying Thorn's focus in dealing with free agency.
I would like to see David Lee interview in person, even if no concrete offer could be made.
It would draw out Boozer and give the Nets some positive press – they need it.
Agree Avery for Gm why not? and Jerry Colangelo for President

Why does Thorn have to leave?!
I don’t like any of the candidates besides Presti, and he has no reason to leave OKC.
Isaac you couldn't be more wrong
When Prokhorov came on board, one of the first things he made known was he wanted to keep Thorn. If he didn’t want Thorn, he would have said as much like he did concerning Kiki.
Stop looking for reasons to antagonize Prokhorov, especially ones that are completely untrue.
It was just his time
Money is one thing, but family comes first. The timing sucks but you know he’s gonna make one last big move to remember him by.
His time frigidevil?
even though the man is on record as saying he is retiring although he “doesn’t want to retire”.
you guys really do believe whatever it is you want to believe.
His words not mine
RIGHT AFTER he said he didn’t want to retire,
“It’s just time for me to go…You know when it’s time, and this is the time. That’s really just the bottom line. It’s just time for me” Nothing is pushing him out, he reiterated.

Oh look at that, it’s an actual link to an actual article specifying where I got my information.
Maybe potential GMs...
don’t want to work for a guy that just essentially fired (or at the very least “low-balled”) one of the most respected basketball men this league has ever known. And before ANY of you jump down my throat, please wait for Net Income’s proof that this is not the case. This is the 4th time I am prompting him for this information and so far we have nothing to contradict this being the case.
I think they discovered Kiki was...

maybe NI has better things to do
than address a ridiculous conspiracy that a total of one person believes
Remember that Bower badmouthed Avery the first time
when Avery was on his way out of New Orleans’s job, so Bower may be badmouthing him again to the press to justify his not wanting the job.

It was just a play for Paul
When you “try” to hire the guy who you are negotiating with, this can only be a compliment.

Just hire Bobby Marks already although I am not sure who would become head of basketball ops.
I would really like Jerry C as PResident and Marks as GM.

instead of the coach/gm thing
lebron can be player/and gm at the same time
Since the face been revealed the game got real
guys wake up!!!! Instead of continuing to barrage me with insults, do some research and realize that it was reported ins everal places that Thorn was offered a substantial pay-cut from Prokhorov to return!! The guy is worth billions of dollars, he could pay Thorn anything he wanted if had any interest in him returning. Stop treating this mand as if he is a superior being. he most certainly is not.
by IsaacNJN on Jul 6, 2010 3:29 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Isaac, I think you are on the right track. It seems to me thar Prokhorov’s team benchmarked the salary that should be paid for Thorn’s position. Thorn was miffed that Prokhorov would expect him to take a paycut and figured this was a good time to move on. Just more evidence that a certain blogger was a bit delirious when writing about the “prokhorov advantage”.

Glad to see someone is willing to look at anything related to this team objectively anymore as opposed to believeing everything they hear from the Prokhorov/Brooklyn spin-machine.

I am still unclear if Nets will also be looking for a President of Basketball Operations too?
Didn’t Thorn do both jobs, yet we only hear about a GM position.
Will they eliminate the Basketball Operations Position?
Either way, Bobby Marks should get some promotion.
And I have no problem with Avery being given some title, that would give him a say in all basketball player decisions. Any President would want the coach to have a say.
Look at Phila, where clearly Doug Collins is making basketball decisions and noone seems to have a problem with that.
Why should anyone complain if Avery has the same power as Doug Collins does in Phila??
Thorn was hired with both jobs before the 2001 season.
Somewhere along the way Lou Lamoriello took over as CEO. After he returned to full time duties w/the Devils, Thorn promoted Stefanski to be GM. After Stefanski returned home to Philly Kiki was brought in. Haven’t read anything about the Nets looking to fill both GM/Prez roles with one person or two. Maybe Marks will get moved up to President and hires his own GM? Maybe a new guy is brought in and brings in someone else ala Patterson/Pritchard?

Why....
are we going after front office people who ALREADY have jobs?? if we’re going to do that at least go after somebody decent. no scrubs like dumar and bower plz.
Here's the plan:
Thorn stays on as prez for another year, Marks gets promoted to GM. We all know it: Thorn doesn’t want to miss this coming year with LBJ, so give Thorn his old salary and he’ll stick around for the excitement.
by Mookie Blaylock on Jul 6, 2010 4:30 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Would love for that.
But then what? Does Marks move all the way to President after next season or does Proky bring in fresh blood? Eventually that question needs to be answered.
Or does Marks get a GM job with another team
