Nets Fall to Sixers on First Day of Summer League

The Nets opened their 2010 Summer League schedule with a 84-74 loss to the Sixers in Orlando on Monday night. It was a foul-ridden affair, and except for a brief Nets lead early in the fourth quarter, Philly led from start to finish. Terrence Williams got into the paint at will, finishing with 23 points (including a pair of highlight dunks) and seven assists. Derrick Favors shot just 2-for-8 from the floor and committed seven fouls, but finished with eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Damion James and Ben Uzoh each finished with 11 points, Uzoh connecting on three of his five attempts from 3-point range. The Sixers were led by Jrue Holiday's 21 points and seven assists. Evan Turner finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

I thought Turner was solid.

He and Favors were the 2 best rookies out there.

Favors would be very good next to a good offensive center (Brook)

Will allow him to focus on defense and rebounding. Favors did get 9 rebounds in less than 30 minutes.

Favors looks like the classic power forward right now he guards the paint well he did a awesome job on speights . When he wasn’t in the interior defense wasn’t there. He does have to work on his shot . But he can rebound and defend right now in the Nba.

by Hollywoodnet on Jul 5, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Another thing he needs to improve on is his ball handling.

When he is looking to drive to the hoop, the ball was constantly getting swiped out of his hands. This is the same problem he had back in college.

by Air Force 1 on Jul 5, 2010 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

He needs to protect the ball when going strong to the basket and coming down with the board.

by Hollywoodnet on Jul 5, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Uzoh...

I’m okay with Favors production in limited minutes. Smart with the ball and his man shot horribly. Obviously, fouls could be an issue.

by rundmc00 on Jul 5, 2010 9:57 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I do love how high he gets his elbows after a rebound.

by Fr@nkl1n on Jul 5, 2010 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

Zoebek should be cut

No wonder he wasn’t drafted, he got destroyed and will in NBA aswell. We need a veteran back up center. Zoebek needs to be cut, I liked Twill and Damion James. Favors is shy and should have demanded the ball a bit.

by RandyOreens on Jul 5, 2010 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

Agree

You recite my very thoughts. Zoebak did not play well,Twill needs to start working on his shot already,James played well but i didn’t like his body language.Favor did play a little shy but how much can you ask , from a still growing 18 yr old. Didn’t like Uzoh but the Kid Carter looked good.

by Zartan on Jul 5, 2010 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

three years ago

Marco Belinelli flew in from Italy to the Vegas summer league and scored 38 points in a summer league game.

Earl Barron had 33 in the Orlando Summer League the year before.

Both are records.

One thing we do see...

Is the Nets are playing TWil at PG either as Devin’s backup or maybe we trade Devin.

by rundmc00 on Jul 5, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Crazy to trade Devin

But t-will should be the first guard off the bench . He’s a combo guard can play with Devin and be the pg and let Devin slide to sg . And also play with Courtney lee

by Hollywoodnet on Jul 5, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

that game that t-will played today proves the point that i have been trying to make

he is a very good player and good with the ball but cant be a point guard, he was missing alot of open people, throwing plenty of bad passes and had 4 to’s. im not saying he is bad(He’s one of my favorite nets), but hes just not a pg.

by Keenan on Jul 6, 2010 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Not a test

These guys have not played together much and many of them are not NBA ready anyway. I don’t think you can judge his PG skills until he has had a unit of real NBA players to work with for a month or so

by mt57 on Jul 6, 2010 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Good point... BUT

This is not the time to lose again. This is FA week in the biggest FA period in the history of the NBA. We start off just the way we left off. This was a perfect opportunity to maybe have our guys be more prepared then the other team, maybe get them in the gym together more….something. Normally summer league means nothing, but in my opinion, this was a terrible way to start.

by Tim823 on Jul 5, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL...

Terrible summer league?

You do realize that Philly had 3 starters and we had none.

TWil look very good at PG and some of the other guys looked okay. I am very happy and can’t wait until tomorrow’s game.

by rundmc00 on Jul 5, 2010 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

Yes i do realize that. I also think my point still stands.

by Tim823 on Jul 5, 2010 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Just wanted to say something....

Hi guys I’m a Grizzlies fan but, I’m a huge fan of Favors as well. I think that he will be a great player in the NBA in time. I thought that Terrence Williams did a very good job that game. And, Damion James I believe will be a good player as well.

And, for the guys who said that Favors is a project and will take years before he’s ready to contribute you all need to remember something. It is EXTREMELY RARE to find a big man that is truly NBA ready. Second, it was his first NBA experience. I vividly remember guys like Durant, Rose, Mayo, Westbrook (I’m aware that they are all perimeter players but, I’m trying to make a point) who are all rising NBA stars struggling badly in the Summer League. Third, yeah Favors is a little raw but he ain’t got nothing on Hasheem Thabeet. The game that Favors played was better than every game that Thabeet ever played in the Summer League.

The Nets are a better team, but for those looking for positives about Favors’ play need to imagine him trying to guard a REAL NBA PF. He would be eaten alive.

The point isn’t that he sucks, its that he’s at least 2 year away.

If you paid attention to what I said, he reminded me of Bynum in his first year with the Lakers.

Now Bynum, if he was healthy, would be the second best big man in the game. But it took him several years to get his game together.

Even Dwight took time. To expect Favors to solve, or even contribute mightily to the PF problem is in my book naive.

So yes, let’s agree to disagree.

Albeit small signs, He went hard to the basket off passes, He finished, Seem coposed and calm, Seemed able to handle the comp, Blocks a few shots and heped Sprieghts shoot poorly, I would say it was middling,,,nit bad for a first game, Turner about the same, Best players today: One goes to Lance Strephenson and two goes to TWill

I don’t have anymore patience to wait 3 years for him to develop. I like him a lot…. but I also watched 70 losses last season, and we get this big time big spender for an owner, I just want to win now, and win later… not be mediocre now, win later.

You don’t put up a 200 ft billboard to wait 3 years for him to maybe become good!

Ill say it again though, I like the kid(I for sure want to keep him, there is no reason why we cant)… but he needs to come off the bench behind an all star!

Favors seems to make pretty good decisions with the ball...

His shooting stroke is not horrible but the results are not good yet. He needs to shoot about 1,000 times a day in practice.

by rundmc00 on Jul 5, 2010 10:06 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Favors needs the ball more...

Post ups, pick and rolls, pick and pops. He looked pretty active today, so I was happy about that. He had deep position in the post a couple times. It’d be nice to see him get used to scoring. He has potential to be more than just a garbage man.

by mikegrand15 on Jul 5, 2010 10:16 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

rebounding, and intimidation, thats what Favors showed off tonight. Uzoh showed some nice range, shooting 3 for 5 on 3pters. i do agree Zoubeck did disappoint, id give him a couple more games,

More important is that James could only shake his head NO, when asked if there was a timetable to make a decision.

http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/67858/20100705/sources_claims_nets_cavs_and_bulls_are_lebrons_final_three/

That is NOT a good sign for Cavs, if he couldn’t be more “upbeat” in front of his hometown audience.

Word is starting to spread nationally, that it is between Nets, Cavs and Bulls.
It would hurt the analysts so much to say Nets first.
However, it seems that LeBron is letting DWade have first choice at the Bulls, since that is where his family is.

And if LeBron only watched that game, he would realize that TWill must be an asset when comparing Nets with Bulls
and Favors can rebound in NBA – less need for Bosh.

by jerry25 on Jul 5, 2010 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

If we get James, I say get Bosh...

If we miss out on James, I say Lee.

Forget Boozer because he is more win now. If we get James and Wade/Bosh go to Chicago…I would go for Boozer.

by rundmc00 on Jul 5, 2010 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

Bosh says he likes Sam Mitchell aswell

Sam Mitchell bought out the best in Bosh and knows him best he can use him greatly with Lebron.

by RandyOreens on Jul 5, 2010 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Well……..if he lets Wade have his first choice, and Wade goes to Chicago, we got Bron. You agree, jerry?

by lupojohn3 on Jul 5, 2010 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Hoping, but I definitely would like to see some "sign", like Maverick Carter coming to Jersey or LeBron giving the signal to interview Boozer/DLee.

If only Jay-Z was as persuasive as I am, or better yet, as Avery Johnson is, then it would be no contest.

Jay-Z has said some stupid things, and I’m not at all confident that he could argue that Nets have better core and future than Cavs or Bulls.

People in the media keep saying things like “no one really knows anything about Prokhorov”. or “If not for playing 3 years in Newark, I would definitely give Nets a chance”.

Jay-Z should have answered those questions long ago.

by jerry25 on Jul 5, 2010 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he thought he’d have to answer those questions. Bron knows him well enough, and would trust him. I think you might be talking about if the media asked him, but I don’t think it’s his place to do that.

by lupojohn3 on Jul 5, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

jerry25, you wanted a sign? I got one for you. Go to the section where it says ‘’Recent Posts’‘, and click on ’’Still In One Game, Planning For Another’’. It says Thorn is checking in with Bron’s agents ’’regularly’’ to see where they stand. This is really good news.

by lupojohn3 on Jul 5, 2010 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont think Lebron would want to play in the same division

Lebron would feel the Bulls with Wade would hurt Cavs chances in the division. He should come to the Nets!!! Where he can dominate the division.

by RandyOreens on Jul 5, 2010 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

You’re right. Never thought of that. If Wade chooses Chicago, why would Bron want to fight it out in the division with him, when he can come here, and win the division right away?

I got some good news on the Bron front.

by lupojohn3 on Jul 5, 2010 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

In the Recent Posts section, article titled ‘’In One Game, Planning For Another’‘, it says Rod Thorn is keeping in ’’regular touch’’ with Bron’s agents. That means he probably wants to come here, and Bron is telling his agents to tell Thorn what he wants them to do. I think you’ll see something happen(Bosh, Humphries trade) within 24 hours. Nothing certain, just my guess.

If you can’t be respectful, don’t post. It’s just not nice. And before you mock me, Rose said he preferred Joe Johnson over Bron, and Bulls management said they won’t allow his inner circle, or management team any perks.

T-Will looked pretty good

Didn’t like the one rebound, but its only summer league.

Favors just needs to get adjusted. He’s going to be a beast

Also....

….wasn’t impressed by Zoubek, but its just the first game. Udoh intrigues me. He can definitely hit the 3

ZOUBEK cant move his feet fast enough to play in the league. It was sad.

Udoh and James are keeprs.

Favors is going to be a Monster! A beast!

Twill is my fave net as of right now. His game is crazy. We need a shooter badly though. Ryan Anderson would fit in great with this team.

Shooters???

We could use some shooters.

How about Anthony Morrow?… He can shoot it!
Al Harrington 6’9 SCORER… Can shoot the 3 and can start of produce from the bench.
Kyle Korer?
Eddie house?
Mike Miller?

The NETS are coming!

I want no part of Al Harrington. The man single-handedly lost the Knicks four games last season through his own stupidity.

He’s a scorer for one primary reason – he doesn’t pass.

The very reason my co-host and I have dubbed him Bricks Harrington.

Who cares? After what the Bulls just did to eliminate themselves, I could care less about the Summer League. He’s almost here, guys. He’s almost here.

I'm finding it hard to be patient

After the last two years I was hoping that Favors would at least make a difference on the defensive end but like I’ve been told before it’s going to take some time. He has the size but I need to see the talent. The jury is out as far as I’m concerned. A top PF signing would speed up his development and we need one desperately or we are not much better than last year. It would have been nice if Favors left me with the impression that it was just a matter of time but he didn’t. Oh well. First game for an 18 year old, I’ll write it off. I hope Rod’s statement that he could contribute “right away” on the defensive side was correct.

FAVORS

Favors is a shy and quiet guy which is not necessarily a bad thing but on the court I would say be a little more hungrier. You can definitely see what he is capable of after that game, really just a major force down in the key. I would definitely say “dwight howard” if I see anybodies game he would most resemble. Looks promising. I must also say T.Will already looks like he progressed tremendously and I think we got a steal in Damion James; he was very active on floor, good movement, very smart.
