Is Chris Paul (Jason) Kidding?
Al Iannazzone sees a familiar pattern in Chris Paul's comments about wanting to represent New Orleans.
"So just because he said he's happy with the direction of the Hornets and likes the city, don't believe it," Iannazzone writes. "(Jason) Kidd used to say he wanted to end his career with the Nets all the time."
Iannazzone sees another parallel as well: the desire to play with other top players after a summer in the Team USA system.
"After Jason Kidd spent the 2007 summer with great players like James and Kobe Bryant he returned to the Nets, looked at Vince Carter much differently and ultimately forced his way out."
- Paul is committed, but is he Kidding? - Al Iannazzone - The Record
- Chris Paul has decided not to ask the New Orleans Hornets for a trade - John Reid - New Orleans Times-Picayune

Great article...
I miss the days when great players wanted to beat each other.

Why would they want to beat each other?!?!?!?!?!?
When they have eachother’s names on the reversible side of their Jerseys???

He has made no definitive statement that he wants to stay in New Orleans
No reason to believe anything has changed between the initial trade demand and now
With 2 years left on his contract, he has no choice but to "suck it up" for at least one more year.
If he doesn’t give NO, 100% (no migraines like JKidd, or poor play like Bosh) then his time left in NO would not be pleasant.
Until/unless he shows he can still play like 2 years ago, any team would be foolish to give up their future players for CP3.
Nets aren’t even on his list, so lets just forget about CP3 and focus on improving the team so that Proky can keep his promise to make the playoffs.
great point
which is why waiting until the deadline to consider this kind of move would be the prudent thing to do.
if he’s cut from the same cloth as Kidd, James, and Bosh, who will dog it on purpose until they can leave, or if he looks like he’s lost a step, then no thank you.

By deadline, I assume you don't mean the current Feb. trade deadline? I wouldn't jeapardize the team's chances this season over the < 2% chance that he could be traded to the Nets in February, and actually benefit the Nets long term.
And even if Nets got CP3 in February, he could just leave the following summer or else Nets would have to trade him in Feb 2012 and bring back less talent. No thanks.
And I expect now for Melo to accept his 65 million / 3 yr. offer in the coming months, which would pretty much end hopes for a competing 3-some team.
Feb deadline
Not really willing to bet the farm for Chris Paul.
I’d seriously consider Melo. Not Paul.

Melo will be under great pressure and motivation to sign his extension. Perhaps Nuggets will withdraw offer if he doesn't sign by Feb.
But if Melo doesn’t sign, it still would cost a lot to get Melo, and he could just leave at end of year. What would be the point. No GM would give up much for Melo, especially since he doesn’t want to come to Nets.
What if Brook does the same thing after spending this summer with USA talent?!?!?!

OT question:
What established players did Avery really have in Dallas other than Dirk?

Terry and Howard (pre-injury).

Just a smidge under 20 PPG and 7 RPG over 75+ games in the ‘07/’08 season. Roughly 19 and 7 in the season prior.

So basically the club was Dirk and spare parts...
Avery did a spectacular job. Kidd definitely undermined him after the trade.
by rundmc00 on Jul 29, 2010 8:51 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Well not exactly
Dirk is a consistent allstar after all and had his absolute best MVP year during Avery’s time. During Avery’s 3 full years as head coach, Howard was a 16-20 ppg guy while Terry was a 16-17 ppg guy. Not to mention they also had a then useful Jerry Stackhouse and a budding Devin Harris. Damp’s also a more solid center than his numbers would make him seem.
Not exactly Dirk and a bunch of minimum salary guys. Terry and Howard were easily near allstar level during his time there
Dwight Howard plays for the Magic and Terry Bradshaw never played basketball, you guys are way off bros.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
You make my point...
Guys like Howard and Devin played their best ball under Avery. He was a big part of their success that has not yet been replicated.
by rundmc00 on Jul 29, 2010 9:03 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Well we can't really be sure of that since they've only had a few years outside of Avery
Josh Howard was still an 18 ppg guy after Avery. Then last season was riddled with injuries. Devin Harris had his allstar year after Avery.
Avery is a great coach. Is he going to wear out his welcome is the question?
Since the face been revealed the game got real
It’s one that shouldn’t even really be asked at this stage.

I would say Devin's best ball was under Frank
but that turned bad quickly. Imo I wouldn’t judge Avery’s success by the performance of individual players but rather by the teams’ record. Citing the ppg is only one aspect but I hope and think that Avery’s influence will come on the defensive end. All the guys mentioned above played their best defense under Avery.
Devin has played zero defense since Avery.
And the reason he was fired was Jason “the coach killer” Kidd.

I love AJ as our couch, wanted him the minute Frank was let go. My problem with AJ(just realized) is , none of our players can develop a big ego(needed!) like a Wade,Durant,Jordan or Kobe.

I immediately assumed the Hornets-Paul meeting was basically “We’ll look into trading you, but you have to pretend you want to be here to maintain your trade value”
Yeah got to keep up appearences incase it falls through then both sides have all these questions about things other then basketball. Or if you act like your willing to keep him you might get more for him. If Okafor is in the deal that rules a lot of teams out, there might only be a couple teams that will take Okafor to begin with so thats not really a position of strength.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Okafor doesnt rule the NETS out though. we have money to burn.
Okafor may very well be a good useful 4 or 5 for us. if not, well his contract will end fairly soon.

basically
until he is dealt people will be speculating where he is going along with Melo.
The thing that this off season should have thought us is not to chase the unobtainable.
Build the way we are. If we look fro a quick fix we will be where the knicks were back when thomas was trading potential for trash.
As for the article I have said this many times over. that this situation resembles the one where kidd asked to be traded to a team of his choice.
While others wanted to compare it to the year where Jason first arrived.
CP3 along with these other stars have a destination or destinations in their mind already .
What I keep reading is the NBA have too many teams. Is this a nice way of saying the whole super teams along with the recession is going to help weed out these lower teams????

good call
this sounds exactly like jason kidd’s situation.
why no one wants to play here
Well, what I said before became reality, that LeBrat James will not want to play for a 12 wins team, and we even had to overpay guys like Outlaw and Farmar to come play here, now here you see the patern continues with Chris Paul, besides no team is interested in our players, as I said before on this blog this was not a rebuilding phase, it was a budget cut to make a sale, which ended up smeering this team’s name, so not only we got nothing in FA summer we also lost our only and best asset in Rod Thorn, the man felt the need to leave because he couldn’t help the team, he saw how the Franchise name is associated with 12 wins became very unatractive to all the big names, coach K said no to it, and so did others.
Thorn will be back in busness but with a better franchise, mark my words.
We are left with Billy King who can’t walk and talk at the same time!
Go Nets!!!

wtf are you talking about? LeBron clearly made up his mind a long time ago about Miami, and Coach K was never leaving Duke.
WTF
WTF are you talking about? LeBrat said before that his favorite city is Brooklyn, his buddy is Jay Z and coach K said no even though rumors were saying if he is offered 10 Milllions, and he still said not interested.
This franchise has a big stane on it’s logo now and it’s called 12 wins and until they start to reverse course in a couple of years big names will shy from it and we will have to overpay to lure anyone to come here.
by pacos on Jul 29, 2010 1:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Coach K said no because why would you leae a cushy Duke job its not like he took another job in the NBA.

On "Overpaying Players"
First off. Farmar wasn’t overpaid. Luke Ridnour got more money. Guy was the backup PG on 2 championship teams and is still 23.
Secondly have you ever thought that maybe Outlaw was overpaid by design? We only have 1 roster spot left and are still a bit below the league Minimum. If Outlaw made 20 mil over 5 years we would be even further below the league minimum. Also in terms of trading for other players later we needed someone besides Devin who made a salary that could match up with better players.
Just look at RJ’s deal and his numbers this past season. Avery wanted Outlaw here for a reason. And If Outlaw averages 15 PPG and 6 RPG IMO his contract is justified.
The NETS are coming!
Chris Paul in Miami
Did anybody think about the possibility that Heat trading Bosh and some parts to Hornets for Paul and Okafor. Okafor is still a good center and Paul is LBJ’s buddy. NO are going to get an All-star. How about that. I know Bosh can’t be dealt till December but what about at the trade deadline?
Don’t think Lebron and Wade would let that happen and the Heat can’t take back Okafor and Paul.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Why not
CP3 and Bosh are earning nearly equal and add few players and salaries can be matched.
Okafor makes over ten million so the Heat are taking back 10 million more and I don’t believe they are allowed to do that. You would have to ask someone who knws the cap better then me.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
I still think it is possible with the players Heat has.
Let the cap experts comment
It isn't possible
It has to be within 10 percent and then you can work things out. So Okafur is getting 14 million and 11 for Paul. They round up to 26 million dollars.
Bosh is 17 million or so. That is a 8 million difference or so. Now what do you do to make up that difference?
Also do you think Bosh would be happy playing with West? I don’t see why NO would do this?
Not to say in theory you couldn’t trade Bosh, but I believe Reily promised them certain things to get them to sign in the first place. I am sure one of those things is he wouldn’t brek them up if they all took a little less. Thats what I believe anyway.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Heat Gave Up Six picks for LBJ and Bosh
Any team getting CP3 will have to pony up some picks bottomline.
The NETS are coming!
Why not
CP3 and Bosh are earning nearly equal and add few players and salaries can be matched.
Queen James
If anybody wants to really piss the guy (LBJ) off, this is a good idea for a placard to Heat games all around the country.
King Wade
Queen James
too homophobic
i’d feel like a teenager carrying that sign
Doesn't matter.
That will hit his ego more than anything….
Better way...
The best way would be for all fans to boycott the Miami heat road games. Let them play to an empty arena and no merchandise sales…but that won’t happen. Ppl will flock to see them even if they claim to hate them

Would you hate him if he came here?
Don’t let the media screw your mind.
Well....
…..if you’re a fan of the Nets, Knicks, Cavs, and Bulls, you have a decent reason to dislike Lebron in the sporting sense, since he played our teams for fools.
IMO, he really disrespected us and the Cavs the most. If he really was friends with Jay Z the least he could have done is given us a heads up from the door. It was all a waste of time.
He killed CLE the worst though. Absolute disrespect.

Hey i'll live with talking about
how this team is moving in the right direction regardless if it’s not the big splash that will make us contenders right away. With Avery i’m confident of an identity, which we haven’t really been able to say for a while unless you call ‘bad’ an identity.
Btw, 10 bucks says a newspaper made up that story about Paul and Anthony toasting to going to the Knicks. Knicks fans are too gullible.
I dnt think any 1 player
will make us. Contender right away
We'll agree to disagree on that one
I don’t know about championship contender but we’re a solid team if CP3 is suiting up for us next year. But enough of that i’m sick of thinking of out of the organization options, (while i’m in the Paul thread) haha
Oh I thought contender meant competing for a championship
but yea no doubt we will b a good team wit paul
it depends
if Lopez and Favors become the frontcourt that I think that they can be, it will take one stud on the wing to put us where we need to be.

Still not right away
we have to wait for Favors. But in the future if the potential is lived up 2 we may only need really good role players…. Favors, brook and James can make this team special. Hopefully they live up to expectations
Situational Spots
I dont see whats the problem with you guys taking on Okafor besides his contract you guys say he can’t play next to Brook, but if you see his Starting spots before last season he started more games as a Forward than a Center in Charlotte, an NBA Stating center that starts at Center never slots down to the Power Forward even if he can play that Position because teams have better backup Power Forwards than Backup Centers throughout the league, But on the other hand if you have the abilty to play both positions and you start as a Power Forward and your teams backup Power Forward is better than your backup Center than your oboiusly going to slot upto the Center and play with a better Combination.
+Why would you start Okafor at the Power Forward if supposively he is not one and he started nealy 200 Games at Power Forward.
Draft Express says he is an athletic PF/C That shots and defends the 13-5 foot jump shot well, he is a weakside shot blocker and a great rebounder something the Nets havent had since Keyon Martin and is a good Post Presense on O AND D
Okafor sucks
I had him on my fantasy team his 2nd year in the league, what a disaster that was lol. In the games I’ve watched Okafor would get a double-double but it was like he’d have 4-6pts and 10rebs and then get the other 4-6 pts in garbage time. I don’t consider him a true “double-double” guy. His 10/10 is very weak. He’s also very slow and clumsy with bad hands, he blows more opportunities than Boone around the rim. Just my opinion on him.

this is why this deal shouldn't even be considered.

You would only give away T-Will and Harris keep Favors and Lopez and James and Lee and all your young Signnings so you wouldn’t give up T-Will for Paul and Harris for Okafor and why?
NO
You shouldn’t give up on a young talent like TWill if you have to eat Okafor’s contract, it’s that simple.
It’s not happening, so whatever.
King and Avery
are going to trade him anyway hes going to be warming up the bench and giving out Towels to Anthony Morrow and Courtney Lee and Devin Harris and Jordan Farmar and Travis Outlaw and Damion James.
1.)Avery said Lee is their starting SG And Harris No doubt is their starting PG he signed guys (not Rod Thorn)like Outlaw, Morrow and Farmar and he drafted James not Rod, Avery was in charge and he still is.
2.) He did say Lee’s spot wasn’t a given and Morrow not T-will could easily take it away
3.) Their going to keep T-Will to keep those guys motivated something like hustlingg for lose balls and being accurate and effcient on both sides of the court, but eventually going to trade him to Houston or Sacramento who are stacked with young bigs. Hill, Thompson, Patterson or Landry.
sigh
King and Avery
are going to trade him anyway hes going to be warming up the bench and giving out Towels to Anthony Morrow and Courtney Lee and Devin Harris and Jordan Farmar and Travis Outlaw and Damion James.
This is downright laughable. Stop talking about TWill as a benchwarmer or a towel waver, it’s laughable to think he’ll be riding the pine because of those one dimensional role players, stop making stupid assumptions and stop talking as if they were facts, it sounds hilarious.

the problem is taking back that contract which kills our flexibility.

Guys we should be very happy with avery
He is very passionate about the sport and when he loses he gets angry, I am telling you this if the Nets play like they did last year they will be screamed at and be given hard practices and traded away. Avery will prove everyone wrong, he is involved with what we as fans want to. He had an open call for season ticket holders letting them know how excited he is. We have the best coaching staff besides Lakers in the league. I have a lot of faith in this season!
Do you guys agree
Dec. comes and we are 12 gms over .500 and we are in 3rd place in the Conference
Does everyone agree Paul might come because we are winning and competing, also lets say the hornets arent winning
I know most of you are going to laugh and say 12 gms over .500 and are in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference, but the thing is how do we know it cant happen we havent seen the nets even play a pre-season gm yet to determine if were going to be a good team or not, im really excited for this season and i am reading alot of we arent going tothe playoffs and we are going to win 20 gms and stuff like that, but like i said before and ill keep saying it until proven wrong Outlaw is going to play good and so is petro and Coach Johnson and the stafff is the KEY for this team this season
GO NETS!!!!!
"Avery Johnson: Erase to Replace"
Wall2KingJames to JamesSucks
That's a good possibility.....
But if we are doing that well than I wouldn’t want to break up our chemistry…..
A lot has to do with the progress
Of Brook Lopez. Historically the 3rd year can be a big step, but there’s no guarantee’s. Hopefully there is chemistry and the signing of 3pt shooters makes Lopez’s job easier. But he’ll definitely have to show growth in the aspect of being able to make the proper reads on the post when he gets attention.
he's going to have to get better position in the paint
which is why I am sort of wary about this summer’s bout with mono and then rushing to play for Team USA. I’m going to be livid if I see Lopez posting up and then letting Howard or Perkins push him out to the foul line area.
Nets brass should have laid the hammer down and kept him home, but I guess they feel that this is the right thing for him to do. He needs to get stronger, can’t do that while playing in the World Championships.

Great Possibly
Last season, about 95% of the games we lost up to Dec, were within 10 pts. We had no perimeter shooting, no peremeter D, and no 4th quarter game. They seriously addressed those problems and added a better coaching staff. This is very possible.
