Lopez Makes Team USA Cut

USA Basketball has cut four players, including center JaVale McGee, which helps but does not ensure Brook Lopez a spot on Team USA's final roster.  McGee, Gerald Wallace, O.J. Mayo and Tyreke Evans (who's been injured) were dropped, putting the roster at 15.

The roster still must be trimmed to 12 by August 26, two days before the FIBA World Championships begin in Turkey. Lopez is now one of two natural centers on the team, along with Tyson Chandler of the Mavericks, but Coach Mike Krzyzewski has also been playing Lamar Odom at the five.

USAB Chairman Jerry Colangelo said he was not aware before camp that Lopez was recovering from mononucleosis, adding the Nets center has has a "lot to prove" during next month's World Basketball Festival in New York.

Didn't care if he made it or not.

But it will be fun rooting for a Net on team USA

Consequences will never be the same.

Congrats

Though I’m really torn.

Anyway, I hope he gets a great experience out of it. And use the training to get better and stronger.

Good luck!

I hope he plays like the Lopez we all know...

…because it is a joy to watch.

Good news. Hes going to be around winners, hes going to get back into proper shape prior to training camp, and he will improve skill wise going up against Tyson in practice for the rest of the summer assuming he makes the final cut

Lopez on team to serve as practice buddy for Tyson and Odom

I’m not hatin’ on Brook, but this is most likely reason for Brook stayin on.

by 3ptChucker on Jul 28, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Nonsense. Brook is on team because he is being given a chance to show his old form.

If he does, he has more of a chance of making team than Odom, who is out of shape and not going to be part of the future of Team USA.

Even if Brook Was going to be cut in the end, he might be asked to make the trip to Turkey (nice travel experience for the young Lopez) in case of a last minute injury to the injury prone Chandler.

Bad luck for Lee and Evans

They got injured in the practice.
But since haven’t practice with the rest of the guys, it would be unfair if they were selected.

I feel like he needed this

if he was looking to hit the ground running this season and make some improvements from last year.

Even just sitting the bench and contributing during practices will do wonders for him.

Congrats, Brook!!

He’ll do much better in a real game compared to that god awful scrimmage they televised. I just hope he’s 100% recovered from the mono… I would hate to see him sidelined for any amount of time because it relapsed.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Jerry Colangelo and Coach K recognized his hardwork, that he was coming off of a serious illness, and that he has been playing like an all star for the past 2 years!!!

Great job Brook!!! Go Team USA!!!

+1

When he first admitted about the mono, he said “it’s embarrasing”.
I’m like WTF ??? If he’s clean, there’s nothing to be ashame of. LOL.

G Wallace

I think they’ll miss a guy like Gerald Wallace on team USA. You need a terrific defender and rebounder in the 2-3 slot to slow down the international scorers.

good job brook even tough u didnt deserve it considering on how poorly u performed in the blue vs white game.

It’s just 1 game.
We all know here, what Brook is capable of.
The coaches probably saw from practice what they’re looking for.

I think the last 3 cuts have to be from their glut of guards and wing players

They only have 5 big men, with Green, Love, Odom, Lopez and Chandler.

My guess is Gordon, Westbrook and Gay are gone next.

by Joe Uras on Jul 28, 2010 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Sucks that a lot of the point guards are non-shooters like Rondo or Rose

If Gordon gets cut, that leaves only Billups and Curry at the guard spots as guys who can shoot. But at the same time you’d suffer if you cut Rondo instead of Gordon because of defense and playmaking.

Not to mention Gay and Iguodala aren’t proficient from three either. Neither is Odom.

So you really only have 5 guys on this squad who can hit the three really well. And yes the three point line is closer, but still. if you cut Gordon, that leaves you with 4. Might be a problem later on

by muwu on Jul 28, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

4 point guards!

I’d cut Rondo (can’t shoot) , Westbrook (Rose , Billups , and Curry already) , and I’d cut Green. Durant will probably play a lot of 4 in international play.

by strange-brew on Jul 28, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

They're gonna need all the bigs they can get

Not to mention Green is one of the few guys who can stroke the three on that team. They need all of those too. I’d much rather cut Odom than Green.

And these aren’t nobodies they’re gonna be facing. They’re gonna be up against Tiago Splitter and Nene in this.

by muwu on Jul 28, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

1 of the PGs should be cut, but i'm not sure it will be Rondo.

I think its between him Westbrook and Rose.

Also, they should really cut Odom, they got plenty of Vets with Billups, Chandler, Igudala and they should keep Granger. It would be kind of embarrassing to him imo, he doesn’t really have to be there, he had a long season and is expecting another one, he has all the reasons not to go but wants to be there. I think thats why they will NOT cut him.

by PirateB on Jul 28, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

They need Curry

he’s the best shooter on the team. The US needs all of the shooting that they can get.

Love should get some time at backup 5, if Durant ends up playing exclusively at PF (30 min/game)

The hustling Love is just better at either the 4 or 5 than the out of shape Odom, who often has off nights.

Maybe if Brook recovers to his old form, Odom would be cut, but I doubt it.

by jerry25 on Jul 28, 2010 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I would Say Green, Gordon, Iguadola

If Brook doesn’t regain some of his form he will be gone as well. He needs to get with Zoubeck and find out Exactly what Coach K wants from traditional centers the subtle nuances… Besides we gave one of Coack K’s guys a shot he should Keep Brook around or you may end up with Durant playing center.

The NETS are coming!

No walk over

Think this team may have its work cut out, especailly against Spain. Still plenty of talent, but Spain have been playing togther as a team for a while, winning last year’s Eurobasket.

Good news for Brook though. Its all good for his development.

by Mr Flea on Jul 28, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This will be a learning experience

so don’t expect gold during this year’s world championships.

They will hopefully give Lopez every chance to make team. I wonder if he would have been invited if they knew he was recovering from Mono?

Some people have written that there is a chance for the Mono to return, if he doesn’t take care of himself. Hope that doesn’t happen. Otherwise, the practice should be good for Brook.

Maybe he will be competing for spot after Howard for 2012. Brook will have to make team and do well for that chance.
