Mitchell Unconcerned by Move Down the Bench

In an interview with his hometown paper, Sam Mitchell says that although he wants to be a head coach again, he's happy to be working for Avery Johnson.

"I’ve just been very happy to have this opportunity," Mitchell said. "I’m just happy where I am at right now."

Moreover, the NBA Coach of the Year in 2007, doesn't think there will any problems transitioning back, calling his two years off "an extended vacation".

"I’ve been in basketball 20-plus years, so I’m where I need to be," said Mitchell, who interviewed for the 76ers head coaching job before talking to Johnson about the Nets job.

A Strong Staff!

Coaching is going to be one of our strengths this season. Our young players will benefit from this experienced and accomplished coaching staff. This is where Proky’s money will pay immediate dividends. Player effort will be more consistent, and we are going to win more games down the stretch too. Thanks Proky!

and cheap

Johnson, Mitchell and Krystkowiak are all in the last years of guaranteed contracts signed while they were head coaches elsewhere, so part of their salaries are being paid by the Mavericks, Raptors and Bucks.

Johnson had a four year deal signed in 2007 that pays him $4 million. Mitchell had a similar deal although according to reports the fourth year was only partially guaranteed. Krystkowiak’s deal, at $2 million per, runs out this year as well. That’s why Mitchell talked about him being on “an extended vacation”.

I agree

as long as Avery does listen to his assistants which he seemed not to in Dallas then the strong coaching staff should benefit the players individually and the team as a whole. Plus Avery was instrumental in putting the coaching team together so they were his choices. And with two of the assistants having had head coach experience they should be strong characters. I think the change in the coaching we will see this year compared to last year will be like night and day.

One of the only good acquistions of the off-season

Getting Mitchell is the only thing they did right so far. Adding Musselman to the staff would have made it that much better. There is no evidence despite popular belief here that Avery is an amazing coach and the better his staff will be, the better he will be.

A nice situation for Mitchell

After taking an “extended vacation”, he might not be ready as Avery in taking a head coaching role.
If he forced it, he might fail, and may not have a chance ever again.
