Lopez Less Than Stellar in Team USA Intra-Squad Game

USA Basketball's Jerry Colangelo said before his team's intra-squad game Saturday that he doesn't expect to cut any of his three big men until after the World Basketball Festival in New York next month.

That's a good thing for Brook Lopez. He'd like people to forget what they saw Saturday night.

Looking like he's still recovering from a bout with mononucleosis, Lopez had two points, no rebounds and no blocks in 13 minutes, and often seemed lost in the fast-paced game.  Both Tyson Chandler and JaVale McGee had better games...although McGee didn't do much after an initial 90-second spurt.

The team will gather in New York for a week of training and promotional activities on August 9. Team USA will face off in an exhibition against Team France at the Garden August 15, then head overseas for exhibition games in Spain and Greece before opening the World Championships against Croatia on August 28.

Let him go home and recover

he should have dropped out in the first place

because he’s clearly not in his best condition.

Unless there is evidence that continuing would hurt his health, he should remain, and likely will be in New York.

If Brook looks this bad in New York, then Coach K may regret that he is about to cut McGee (sounds like 50-50 chance).

BTW, I read yesterday that TEvans already took himself off the team, even though apparently many of the reporters missed it. Maybe Evans knew he was going to be cut.

Now if Brook had reason to believe he would be cut, then the wise thing to do is take his name off the list, due to his Mono.

by jerry25 on Jul 25, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Reports are that Lopez IS Recovered, just out of shape.

I wonder how his conditioning with Team USA would compare with what Avery would have him doing.

From reading the reports, Lopez will NOT be cut at this time. Coach K said that McGee would be the one he had to decide about.

Clearly by starting Lopez, he ranks Brook ahead of McGee going in and still feels the same way.

Even Schuhmann, who started the “cut Brook” talk a few days ago, has changed his mind, even after Brooks’ poor performance.
Schuhmann correctly pointed out that Chandler could get injured, so he includes Brook in the final 12 roster.

A team like Brazil has 3 NBA Bigs. And then there is the likely possibility of Chandler getting into four trouble. The USA lost before, in part when Tim Duncan got in foul trouble, and there was no alternative.

Whos keeping the stats?

He had a putback. So thats 2 more points and a rebound.

And he had a defensive rebound somewhere in the 1st

And he blocked Odom going down the lane

He only fulfilled every single criticism I have publicly voiced for ever now.

Just look down at this post below… “constantly out of position, out worked.” and blaming that on his illness? How is that diff then the reg season? Yeah he got triple teamed on a 12 win team, what else do you expect. Just because he is the only person who could score on our team doesn’t make him Tim Duncan. It really is maddening, this blind love that he gets.

You keep mentioning Timmy

no one here mentioned timmy. Everyone basically says he has 1 bad game no need to panic. But you obviously being a Brook hater translate that into " you guys act like he is Tim Duncan"… go take a seat somewhere man no one said anything like that

Exactly… no one mentions Duncan today or yesterday. You can check my profile and see how many dang times I have to comment on someone comparing him to Duncan. Its amazing. And now today its not his fault, its the sickness, the point guards… etc. Give him one good game and youll see Duncan pasted all over this board.

by MrDollarBills on Jul 25, 2010 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

He settled because he hasn’t changed first at all…

And yes I am well aware that its his 3rd year.. but the criticism is stemming from the fact that I cant stand this love affair of him. He can literally do no wrong. I see an above average Center, I don’t see an All Star(only by sure lack at the position) and I CERTAINLY don’t see Tim Duncan.

You’re not content with 19-9-1.7 for a second year campaign for a guy who was taken with the 10th overall pick?

I am VERY satisfied with that, but again, the public is killing him. For me personally its very similar to Lebron. Lebron is the chosen one, and we were forced to “witness” him in year 2. Well if everyone is going to hold him so high I am going to judge him more severely.

by Tim823 on Jul 25, 2010 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

This would all be more valid had he not had mono

i don’t know about you, but losing 30 lbs or something is kind of a big deal. That means no workouts, no exertion, muscle loss for a good time. With him being supposedly down to 220 from his listed 265 earlier, you don’t gain that back in a month or even two or three

Lopez isnt a bum

He is just clearly no where near in basketball shape, heck not even running shape. He was constantly out of position for rebounds, and was just getting out worked. He needs to go home and bulk up. I think Avery should send one of the assistant coaches to his residence so they can beef him up. He is frail thin. And the other guys on his team really didnt look for him down low. I know coach K isnt really about having a post up in your offense, but seriously, there were times he was open underneath and they would just jack the 3.

USA in Trouble

OK, it was just a scrimmage and I watched only half of it, but from what I saw, Team USA is unlikely to win the World Championship. There were only two types of plays: alley-oops and three point chucks. That is not going to get it done against a disciplined and talented Euro team. We may have a lot of talent, but there’s not as much as there has been in the past. When the shooting is on, we’ll be tough to beat, but I can see this team starting off slowly in a game and then getting frustrated. At this point, Kiki’s offensive schemes would be an improvement.

Trust me, Avery is not done with improving the roster. Avery doesn't like to lose.

His dealings could easily add another 8-10 wins.

Avery is going to tap into the draft picks and cap space to make that happen. Thorn isn’t around to prevent it.
Hopefully he will look at expiring contracts, so as to retain the cap space flexibility for next June.
Its no longer realistic to get a Star before the trade deadline.

Last nights performance should be a wakeup call.

Come on people should calm down after this game. I think people are scared that after his illness Lopez losing weight when he obviously need to get stronger could be a problem.

Wait till October.

I really feel when the Nets start to lose many are going to lash out on Lopez because he is what the team is calling their center piece and who they are building around.

which they shouldn’t say or do. Lopez is the best player on a 12 win team. that doesn’t mean he is the center piece.

let cut the man a break.

by killa kadafi191 on Jul 25, 2010 10:39 AM EDT reply actions

I think he will get cut.

Love played well yesterday, really went after rebounds like he always does.
Chandler was a big factor on the boards too and an intimidator on defense. Looks bigger and stronger then Lopez.
Odom had a bad game, but i think he makes it in on the count of being a veteran.

Lopez will be cut.
McGee will be cut, he played really well, but his lack of experience will hurt his chances.

by SunnyB on Jul 25, 2010 10:50 AM EDT reply actions

After reading the articles above, LOPEZ WILL NOT BE CUT AT THIS TIME, but McGee is very possible. It is already stated.

If Lopez does much better in New York, he will probably be the 12 player on roster because it is too risky to rely on Chandler not get injured or in foul trouble.

I would like to Odom cut, even if he is a Vet. Maybe let Odom drop out on his own, like TEvans did.
Billips is the real Glue Guy on the squad. Keeping Odom, means someone deserving gets cut. Kevin Love definitely Stays. I wish Nets would have gone after Love before.

Everyone seems to forget that Coach K is also trying to build a squad that can win Gold in 2012.
Neither Odum nor Billips should be part of the future, but at least Billips is the one Vet to keep.

by jerry25 on Jul 25, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

They can replace an injured player after he gets injured, plus i was never a fan of basing what i do on the assumption that someone will get hurt. Chandler is the best defender out of all that are left. I wouldn’t worry too much about 2012 when Howard is sure to be back.

I think Odom should drop out too, not sure why he even wants to be there. He is older and seems like he always has nagging injuries. He should rest. But i dont think they cut him unless he drops out on his own. Him and Love have the advantage of playing 2 position, Lopez cant.

You sure Evans dropped out, i thought he was just hurt and sitting out the game?

by SunnyB on Jul 25, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

NO THEY CAN'T REPLACE AN INJURED PLAYER. THOSE ARE INTERNATIONAL RULES.

I wish it wasn’t true, but that is what I heard and it may be the reason that Lopez will be the 12th player on Team USA.

Yes, I read yesterday morning that Evans (or someone close to him) said there was no point in playing. I don’t have time to search for article, but it could be because he knows he will be cut.

In the Fanshouse article Jerry C. is quoted as saying last night that Evans will be cut, so now Evans should officially drop out before he is cut. He wants to play in the future for Team USA.

I admit to falling asleep during most of Q4. I don’t think I missed much. Did I miss a few minutes of PT by Brook?

However, I keep reading that Brook didn’t get any rebounds, but we all know he had a rebound early on with no one defending. Hope the official scorers are better in Turkey.

Guys I hate to say this but I think Brook Lopez might be done....

You see a lot of greats who do well their first couple seasons then one thing just throws them off game. I think this is the first time in Brooks career that he stopped playing basketball when he got sick and he might be done. Brook and Lamar Odom had similar first seasons then he just never got back. Lets face it Brook was the worst on the floor last night he couldnt catch the ball. I think we could have put Boone out there and he would have done something.
We will regret this in the long run if we trade Brook now while his career is well we could get something if we dont he might never be the same. You want shocking…you will get shocking because I know Brook has a good chance of never doing well again.

It would be a mistake for Team USA to take Lamar Odum, just because he is tall and could "hypothetically" fill in at Center.

Odum is shown many times in the past that he can have a terrible game. One bad game by him, and Team USA could be eliminated.

Please cut Odum.

And Kevin Love can also play at two positions and is a definite keeper.

It’s the last two years also…….Brook was a # 10 pick yet some people say that he should have been around # 3……….He’s been playing like a second rounder…..His head is just not in the game and the same goes for his legs….Maybe he has a very low Basketball IQ ?……Hopefully Popeye or Bluto Krystowiak can make him more aware…….His reaction time is very slow…..Yeah , I want Brook to be an All-Star and that dominating center that we really never had (except maybe Gminski) but I’m not getting a good feeling about him lately……I want the Nets to win so if he can’t step up than why waste time….Trade him while he still has value……

by NetFan48 on Jul 25, 2010 5:36 PM EDT reply actions

what on earth.....

are you talking about? 19 and 9 with 80% ft for a 2nd year center is phenomenal. the kid lost 30 lbs with mono and is just starting to get his bearings back. did you expect him to dominate this team USA exhibition where everyone was trying to ‘get theirs’ and not get cut? he’s not bringing the ball over halfcourt himself.

Man I would hate it if some of these folks were on the Ledge. Brook obviously Needs to gain the muscle back. He looked Rail thin and really young. Like a high school kid. Wow now he’s a second rounder tho??? Wow too strong there…
Look up Javale Mcgee and Roy Hibbert next best centers after Lopez and put thier stats next to Brooks…
And there were no savior types at any position in that 2008 draft after Brook.

The NETS are coming!

We went from comparing him to Duncan to Javale Mcgee? I’d have to say that is a shift.

I used Mcgee

Because this dude is saying Brook is playing like a “second rounder” Mcgee came out the same year Brook did. 2008 draft.

All I’m saying is:

Duncan > Lopez > McGee

but with Lopez perhaps a bit closer to McGee than Duncan.

I never said duncan wasn't better.

Just mentioned the style of thier games. Duncan is never said to be the “athletic freak” type of guy. He doesn’t play at 500mph. He just goes about his bussiness. That’s all i said. Duncan is top 50 guy and future HOF. Just said Brook has some of the same traits. SOME NOT ALL..

And Mcgee is closer to

Tyson Chandlar. Mcgee will start this year.. His first starting. He will put up numbers but let’s see what they are first. And I can positively tell you Mcgee will never get double Teamed this year at all. With the likes of wall, arenas, thornton, blatche on the floor. Every guy is a competent scorer. I loved thorntons game since college.

Its like when one compares guys who can’t jump to Larry Bird. Do you know how many pretty bad players have been compared to Larry Bird, just because they too could not jump? The point is, when you select a certain feature which is counter-intuitional (like he doesn’t seem like he’s playing hard, or can’t jump). but leave out the TRANSCENDENT feature, like insane footwork and court awareness, you are describing a mediocre player.

This is not to say that Brook is mediocre, but he is missing some essential skills that could make a Center dominant in this league.

THIS

And I’m getting the feeling that Brook is never going to grasp those essential skills (BBall IQ)……..I just don’t feel that he will ever be close to a Franchise Player so while his value is high , trade him for a top lottery pick and possibly get that franchise player…..OR….Keep him and keep hoping……

by NetFan48 on Jul 25, 2010 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

but he said some.

And some of those things can be fixed over time. But even in time, and at this time, he is not playing like a second rounder. How do you even get to that opinion?

by Jbller3 on Jul 25, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

So, we should trade the best player we have...

…because he’s not going to be any good. And in exchange we’ll get a franchise player. That’s completely nuts.

The Only team i can think of that is weak at the Shooting/Small Forward position is Cleveland and has a bunch of Power Forwards Anderson Varejeo, Antawn Jamison, JJ HIckson and Leon Powe

Maybe a deal for JJ Hickson and Sabastian Telfair for Terrence Williams and Quinton Ross

Jordan Hill Houston has jefferies, hayes, scola, miller, yao

Correct me if im wrong

Harris vs. Paul
Marbury vs. Kidd
On the court and off the court leadership

By aquiring someone like Paul injury or not the Nets would become an instant champion contender just look at how aquiring a leader on and off the court in Jason Kidd(Knee Problems) helped the Nets reach the finals 2 straight years, but that is the difference between what a allstar can do and a superstar can do Marbury and Harris were allstars in their prme but dont/didn’t have the leadership a team needs.

Any deal we would have to give up T-will, Harris, and Hump and take on Paul and Okofur.
Our lineup vs. the two time nba defending champs
Lopez vs. Bynum
Okufur vs. Gasol
Outlaw vs. Artest
Lee vs. Fisher
Paul vs. Kobe
Petro vs. Ratliff
Favors vs. Odom
James vs, Barnes
Morrow vs. Vujacic
Farmar vs. Blake
Ross vs. Walton
Zoubek vs. Mbenga

by JJ25 on Jul 25, 2010 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

Wow I don’t even know what to say. But it might just be my opinion.

Since the face been revealed the game got real

by BL3ACH on Jul 25, 2010 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be probably

Paul vs. Blake: Nets
Kobe vs. Lee : Lakers
Artest vs Outlaw: Lakers
Okafur vs. Bynum: Even
Lopez vs. Gasol: Lakers

Odom vs Favors: Lakers
Farmar vs. Fisher: Even
Petro vs. Caracter, Even (Mbenga is with Atlanta)
Morrow vs. Barnes, Vujacic: Even
Ross vs. Walton: Nets
Zoubek vs Ratliff: Lakers

And the biggest problem is that while it might make an okay match up with the Laker bigs, Okafor is a center and can’t really play most PFs in the league.

"...where they don't play with a shot clock." - C. Sager

by kv on Jul 25, 2010 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

This had to be the dumbest reply I had

Blake will not start over Fisher the triangle offense specialist not as long Phil Jackson is still the head coach and Powell signed with Atlanta not Mbenga they have Collins.
Why wouldN’T Okafor be able to play Power Fowards its not like he’s Curry Shaq or Cousins big.

Plus Utah has a similar starting Lineup upfront Okur (not athletic) and Jefferson(NOT ATHLETIC) he is Boozers replacement and Millsap is not going to be the starter.
Lakers C/PF Bynum, Gasol that is not even an athletic lineup.

You dont have to be a in the greatest shape or be the fastest player to be be a good defender just look at Ron Artest. Defense is your concern right.

by JJ25 on Jul 25, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry for the dumbest reply ever.

And sorry for the slip of Powell to Atlanta. But let’s check out your genius.

1. Have you look at the last time Okafor played PF? Tell me what year that was?
2. Mbenga is NOT playing on the Lakers next year, he was replaced by Ratliff for the vet min, yet you insist on putting him in the lineup.
3. Comparing Okafor to Okur is ridiculous because Okur can make PFs and Cs pay by shooting threes. What was Okafor’s 3pt% last year?
4. Artest has one of of the fastest pair of hands in the league, and excellent footwork comparing Artest’s ability to guard 3 positions to Okafor who lacks all quickness is hilarious.
5. As for Fisher not starting. That is debatable. It is very possible that they will let Blake play the minutes so that Fish can rest for the playoffs, and so that Blake can LEARN the triangle. He also is a better defender than Fish, which was a HUGE weakenss of the Lakers last year in the regular season, and much more in the Phil Jackson mode of what he looks for in a defender.

But MOST OF ALL, aside from all your errors, you posted that getting Paul and a player that NO is dying to give away would make the Nets contenders for the championship, which alone wins for the dumbest post of the day.

Further, you missed that Caracter, who was considered one the best Summer League players of the summer is going to be on the club, as is widely assumed by Laker watchers.

And I missed that Ebanks will be on the roster. so it would be

Paul would make the Nets most likely a playoff team not a contender unless you consider making the playoffs a contender?

by BL3ACH on Jul 25, 2010 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

To add to you unfamiliarity with the Lakers, Kobe never guards the best offensive player if he can help it. They like to put him off the ball so that he can patrol the passing lanes. If faced with Paul and Lee he most definitely would guard Lee. And Paul certainly would not be playing Kobe at 6’0".

And because Paul would eat Fisher up who has a very big problem with speed at the PG position, even if Fish was to start (which I am really not convinced of) during the year, Phil would put Blake on Paul with the sole task of keeping him in front of him. This is exactly what Phil did with Harper who he played at the Point on defense when he had him. Phil likes to have the long armed defender on the point, disrupting passing lanes, making the point shoot over him. Paul could certainly shoot over anyone, but there is very little chance that Phil would allow him to abuse Fisher off the dribble, which is what would happen. If you know anything on how Jackson likes to construct a defense, Blake is his guy. (The also make a commitment to Blake this year at more $, and forced Fisher to take a big paycut, willing to let him walk away.)

Regarding the Injury rule for the World Championships

I listened closely to Fran’s statement about getting a replacement for an injury. The answer is NO.

What he said was that the final cut comes right before the first game.
Therefore, you better bring an extra player (or more) to Turkey, just in case there is a last minute injury.

This is critical and is Lopez’ best hope of being on the 12 man squad, in case Chandler gets injured (not to mention foul trouble).

Team USA Centers

How long did they look over the roster of Centers and decide?

I mean they could have went after healthier guys..nothing against Brook..Im not a fan but dont dislike him either. But he had mono…this almost ended UFC’s Brock Lesnar’s career…if you dont know who that is…He’s a heavyweight..the most legit heavyweight in MMA. Pure muscle..anyway back to what im saying…Brook should be resting at home..Im loving he wanna be on this team and support USA…but why didnt he just tell Robin to shave his head and pretend to be him(..thats a joke)..but seriously The coach for Team USA should have looked at possible replacements for Brook..Al Horford could have been a nice addition, as I said Robin wouldve been a nice addition, Okafor, Lamarcus, and maybe more could have replaced Brook.

I respect Brook Lopez for his courage but if I was the coach Id cut him…it’s better to stay home and get healthy in this kind of situation
