Lopez Not a Lock for Team USA

NBA.com's John Schuhmann reports Saturday that it's not a sure thing that the Nets' Brook Lopez makes the final cut for Team USA.  It has nothing to do with the Lopez's offensive skills or his return from a bout of mononucleosis, but rather what Coach Mike Krzyzewski believes are team needs.

Lopez, in fact, may be most skilled center left, Schuhmann writes, but his skills don't necessarily translate for Krzyzewski. "We don't need our big guys to be scorers," the coach said Tuesday. "We need our big guys to be shot-blockers, rebounders and screeners."

Team USA's final intra-squad scrimmage, the 2010 USA Basketball Showcase, takes place Saturday night at 10 p.m. ET.  It will be televised on ESPN2.

I dont want Brook playing anyway. I rather he rest up and hit the gym and get a stronger upper body. Also learn how to pass out of a double team!! If coach K thinks he doesnt need him that looks bad on coach K. No need in Brook wasting his talents just being a screener and shot blocker.

Smh the Nets are getting no respect in the Nba right now. I cant wait till they hop back on our zippers.

Agreed

He looks thin from the Mono. He needs to put some weight back on.

And you’re right about the lack of respect. Nets have had a terrible year though and need to earn that respect again. I think Nets surprise a lot of people this year. It should be fun.

Go ahead coach K cut Lopez.

And see him dominate this upcoming season. Haters gonna hate.. tsss.. underdog..

The MAGIC made me realize that one..

Coach K doesn't know how to coach a big man

He uses his 5 spot player as a big 4. In his offense the 5 is just needed to rebound.

This is why he will always be a college coach. You need a big man in the NBA and if you dont you better have Lebron Kobe and Wade to keep your shooting percentage on point.

The lack of using a big man will kill team USAj.

silly post

Coach K’s team dominated 2 years ago. he is CLEARLY the ideal coach for this team. And he has every right to construct his team in a way he feels it has the best chance of winning. He knows what he’s doing. If Brook doesn’t fit in, that’s fine…… his defense is suspect and rebounding could definitely be better…… dude CAN block shots though.

by Oligarch on Jul 24, 2010 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, saying that Lopez can't block shots is stupid

He nearly averaged 2 a game.

He nearly averaged 2 a game

Nearly 2? He is 7 feet tall, and played how many minutes a game I fully expected him to up his minutes AND blocks from year 1 to 2, not just minutes! He spent way to much time leaving his man in the paint to help out when he shouldn’t have, and lost a lot of positioning because of it.

his defense is suspect and rebounding could definitely be better

He gets half of his rebounds on the offensive end because he misses the close ones and just keeps his arms up… which I have no problem with, I love, but the on the other end all I saw was Yi fighting for boards, Brook usually took off running. He is 7 ft tall and should be the start of our fast break, not the end! If he just applied himself and got his long arms up he would get 12 a game no problem.

by Tim823 on Jul 24, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

ya we get it you hate brook, but you obviously have seen very few other centers in the league, ANd him running on the fast break is the coach’s fault, not his.

by Sparklespice on Jul 24, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

you again

Don’t care how tall he is, 2 a game is better than most nba players case closed.

by shea23 on Jul 24, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering the minutes he plays his total is pathetic.

There are FIFTY players in the NBA that get more blocks per 36 min. For the 2nd (or whatever he is now) best center in the league, that is pretty weak.

by milosh on Jul 24, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Great

Well you give Sean Willaism big minutes if you want a shot blocker. Take per 36 mins stats all you want. I’ll stick with actual blockers per game. Brook is better than most. How many bench player can block shots and do nothing else is beside the point.

by shea23 on Jul 24, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats exactly the point.

When there are 50 players that are more effective shot blockers and you block the same amount of shots that Josh Boone does, you can’t be called a good shot blocker.

Brook WAS a good shot blocker his rookie year.

by milosh on Jul 24, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

he had 151 blocks in his rookie year, 139 last season

and we have to take last season with a grain of salt

You also forget that Lopez had to leave his man to help out since the perimeter defense was atrocious.

by MrDollarBills on Jul 24, 2010 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

There were more cases then not where Brook would wrongly help out the perimeter offense. I found myself screaming at the TV every single game “STAY WITH YOUR MAN!” He was helping for helpings sake, not because it was the best option. This must be fixed with the new staff, I think it will.

by Tim823 on Jul 24, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Lopez was #8 in blocks per game

and

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/stats/byposition?pos=C

Look at his numbers compared to other centers around the league

Stop trying to toss this kid under the bus. He’s still a work in progress but for a 2nd year player he’d pretty damn good and will only get better with actual coaching behind him now.

None of that matters to coach K, because Per Min on the floor, Javale McGee can block the pants of Brook, like it or not.

by Tim823 on Jul 24, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure if the Wizards had a chance to trade Javale McGee,

they’d do it in a heartbeat.

I’m also sure that if Javale McGee was on this team last year instead of Brook, we probably would have become the first winless team in the NBA.

Coach K and blocks per 36 be damned. Javale didn’t play 36 minutes, so that doesn’t even matter. Heck, for all we know, Javale might have fouled out of most games.

by Sparklespice on Jul 24, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you know he is weaker? You go to the gym together? They are both young and lanky.

Brooks defensive IQ as discussed above, be it his own fault, or coaching, is not that good. Yeah he fouls a lot.

by Tim823 on Jul 24, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

how do i know he is weaker? because i have seen him defend other centers and try to get position in the post, and he is much weaker than lopez. And javal mcgee’s iq is actually less than brook’s which says alot. I spent the money on on league pass broadband so i have seen many teams many times.

by Sparklespice on Jul 24, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I too have league pass…. McGee plays a diff game, he is not a back down type of center, that doesn’t mean one of them is stronger then the other. McGee can jump higher, so I mean technically speaking that’s part of strength.

I’m not even going to touch the IQ comment, that takes the whole how do you know thing to a whole new level!

Same thing we need on our team

I couldn’t really care less if Brook isn’t a big scorer, as long as he hits the boards and plays defense. Hopefully Favors does well as a rebounder and defender to make up for the slight loss if Brook is more of a big scorer from now on

by muwu on Jul 24, 2010 8:55 AM EDT reply actions

I kinda want brook to be a big scorer. We need scoring. i think brook’s rebounding was due to kiki having him run out on the break. I would watch games looking at why brook wasn’t rebounding, and alot of it wasn’t his fault/ i couldn’t see a whole lot of rebounds that he missed out on. Shot blocking will improve under avery, just like it was good under frank (especially the first month of last seaon), cause a real coach will make sure he does the right things.

Brook's scoring

Is king of important for our team since he’s our best offensive option. And also you might like those things out of a center. But an offensive cneter with great game is a rare and dominant weapon.

thought Robin was a better fit
Has been sluggish after recovering from a long bout with mononucleosis, and he is more of a scoring center than a rebounder and shot-blocker — which is what Team USA wants most out of its big men.

If he’s moving slow that explains why he’s not playing well.
He needs to work on his rebounding. But he’s a good shot blocker…
Maybe they want a more athletic shot blocker (shakes head)

by danxcr on Jul 24, 2010 8:58 AM EDT reply actions

Well part of it is the international game and the team they have

They need to exploit their size advantage when it comes to big men. They already have great guys on the perimeter to score, they need to be able to punish smaller or less muscular bigs on the boards, not outscore them.

by muwu on Jul 24, 2010 8:59 AM EDT reply actions

Haha

Lopzer might be cut for lack of rebounding, shot blocking and screen setting skills. Pathetic! And we continue to pretend like this is the guy we wanna build around. I dont want him to play there anyway, but by his choice, not to try out to be cut smh!

So much for Brook becoming close with this years Olympians and conspiring to from the next super team.

by milosh on Jul 24, 2010 9:04 AM EDT reply actions

He's still a 22 year old guy who averaged around 19-9 with 2 blocks a game and hasn't missed a game yet in his career

There are only so many teams out there who wouldn’t kill to have him. He might not be a dominant rebounder or defensive player, but you can’t argue that overall he’s not arguably top 3 in the league in terms of pure centers (players that play only center, not power forwards who play center too). And again, there’s the international style of play factor. It’s a different game, different style.

Tim Duncan struggled when he played for the Oympic team

by MrDollarBills on Jul 24, 2010 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Riiiight, Duncan would be cut from this team over Tyson Chandler and McGee.
Duncan’s first chance at playing for the national team came in 1999 when he was called up to the Olympic Qualifying Team. He averaged 12.7 ppg, 9.1 rpg and 2.4 bpg and led the team to a 10–0 finish en route to a qualifying berth for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but a knee injury forced him to stay out of the Olympic Games themselves.10
In 2003, Duncan was also a member of the USA team that recorded ten wins and qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics.10 He started all the games he played in and averaged team bests of 15.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.56 bpg, while shooting 60.7 percent from the field

by milosh on Jul 24, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Mr. DB is referring to the last time Duncan played in the Olympics.

Duncan had a poor showing BECAUSE HE WAS THE ONLY CENTER AND HAD NO BACKUP. Duncan was called with some bad fouls in each game and played limited minutes. If only there was a backup like Lopez at that time, there wouldn’t have been so much pressure on Duncan.

Duncan refused to play for Team USA after that.
And by Coach K’s stupid requirements, Duncan wouldn’t even qualify to be a center, because he doesn’t block enough shots.

Coach K. is an idiot, and I was ALWAYS against taking him as a coach for the Nets. He would probably have traded away Lopez. Avery was the right choice.

And not only that, why does Coach want his team to play the same type of game the International teams.

Why doesn’t he force the International teams to try to Defend the American Big Center Game?

If the USA had Howard, Amare, Bosh and Lopez available, I would play ALL FOUR, and let opposing teams try to figure out how to defend. I’ll bet that USA team would win easily if those 4 were available. Instead he is talking about 1 Big, who could get injured or into foul trouble.

“We don’t need our big guys to be scorers,” the coach said Tuesday. “We need our big guys to be shot-blockers, rebounders and screeners.”

Man this is what I have been saying all along. Brook needs to get in the paint and get dirty. He is too tall to only be grabbing 9 boards a less then 2 blocks a game. The majority of both of those categories come from just being where the ball happens to land. I really hope they bring in a coach that can help him become a real defensive force. Scoring should, and usually always comes from elsewhere, the smaller more nimble players.

Good all around

Either he dosent play and focuses on Nba or he is forced to improve on his deficiencys. I think a different style of play/team/coach would acelerate his learning curve and would be my first choice. For whatever they’re looking for, they’re not seeing it from Brook I guess.

From one of the reports, it mentioned that Brook already gained his weight back. But it doesn’t mean he hasn’t recovered his strength back yet. He needs more conditioning, especially at his size, power is key.

So yes, I won’t mind if Brook got dropped from the roster.
I’d rather him go back to his training and prepare for the Nets training camp.

He still looked a little underweight and without much muscle tone.

But then he would have another month to get ready.

It would be much better for the Nets if Lopez plays. Wishing he doesn’t play to spite Coach K. is just STUPID.
A good performance by Brook would greatly enhance interest in good players like Melo to want to play for the Nets.

Fortunately, it is unlikely that Jerry C. would have to make any decision to cut any of the 3 Centers until the last possible moment.
There is always the chance that someone would be injured, and Chandler is the most likely to be injured. What if Chandler was injured just as real competition starts? That would be too risky to go into competition with only Chandler.

They definitely will need TWO Centers (had David Lee been available, he might have been considered a Center). I don’t want to see the same fiasco as the last time they had only one center in Tim Duncan (was that 2006?) and opposing teams forced him into foul trouble. That DUMB move alone (not having more true Center) cost the USA that year.

He’s just mad b/c he probably asked Proky for 50 million a year and Proky only offered him 12-15 million a year…….or…..Maybe he doesn’t like Russians ??

by NetFan48 on Jul 24, 2010 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

He doesn't like Russians I'm pretty sure. He is Polish and from West Point at a time when Russia was the enemy.

And Jerry C. never got a chance at Nets job after Thorn didn’t want him.

They both have reasons to belittle the Nets.

However, they also have no option but to keep ALL THREE Centers until a few days before the deadline to drop to 12 players (18 currently).

That means that we don’t have to talk about this subject seriously for a few more weeks.
Lopez will have a chance to get back into shape and prove himself ON THE COURT.

There are only 18 players left for the scrimmage tonight, now that TEvans is off the team due to injury.

This is a shame

a really shame

I want Proky to tell the NBA, the Nets will leave from the NBA right now.

They have no respect, they are just like a orphan, no people wants, and no people likes.

by Jarkid Shen on Jul 24, 2010 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

There is a simple solution.

Proky just has forget about what Thorn said when he left, and support the notion to make a couple of deals to have a team ready that will compete for a playoff spot. They aren’t quite there yet.

Willingness to use draft picks and cap space (for just THIS season) need to be on the table.

Making the playoffs will get respect back for Nets. If they won 42 games, that would be a 30 game improvement and one of the best ever turnarounds in NBA history.

by jerry25 on Jul 24, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

But I doubt if we win 40 they would change their mind to think the Nets is good.

During the 2004-2007, the Nets had been a team from 40wins to 49wins. But not many people give the Nets respect.

by Jarkid Shen on Jul 24, 2010 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Because we weren't a young team then, we weren't supposed to win just 40-49 wins

Chicago on the other hand is a young team that has been winning 40 games for 2 seasons now

Charles Barkley did at one point, but most of talk was about Nets tearing down team, without money of a decent arena.

But if Lopez does well for Team USA, there is a good chance it would carry over and he is in this year’s All Star game.

Making playoffs is very important, and that would require a couple of deals. Brooklyn would be a year away. Hopefully Favors, DJames and TWill will look good this year, and DHarris will be “back”.

Still need someone like TMurphy, Illyasova, Krstic, etc., etc. that still maintain flexibility for future.

Lopez making the allstar team will depend largely on our record

Amare has come into the conference, so that’s major competition for him if he continues to be listed as a center. He will face stiff competition from Bogut as well. Howard is already a lock for the starting job.

Might I point out that every player on the allstar team last year was on a team with a winning record at the time. The coaches will not feel that a losing team deserves an allstar unless they are producing at an mvp level or something

by muwu on Jul 24, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Not quite true - David Lee was on a losing team, but was picked later on, and ahead of Bogut.

Can’t see how Amare would be listed as a Center if Knicks already have 2 clear Centers, even if they are mediocre to unproven.

by jerry25 on Jul 24, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, injury replacement
Probably the biggest factor in Bogut’s non-selection is the Bucks’ record so far this season.

Milwaukee are ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 21-26 record, just behind Miami (24-25) and Chicago (23-24) for the final playoff position.

Atlanta big man Al Horford was named to the All-Star bench, even though his numbers pale compared to Bogut’s.

Horford is averaging 13.3 points and 9.5 boards, but the Hawks are sitting fourth overall in the east with a 31-17 clip.

While he was disappointed for his starting centre, Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles understands the reasons Horford was chosen ahead of Bogut.

``When coaches vote, they take into account guys on winning teams more than guys on other teams,’’ Skiles said.

David Lee was Stern’s decision, not the coaches, he chooses injury replacements

Also, even if Amare is at power forward

Bosh is a shoo-in for an allstar berth. If say Amare and Boozer make it too, that’s three PFs already. In any case of 3 PFs making it, they’d only likely pick 1 backup center, making the attainment of that all the harder

@ NetsDaily - can we have a game-time thread tonight for the 10 PM scrimmage - on ESPN2?

A good showing by Lopez could go a long way. Do we know what the rosters will be? Only 9 players per squad. Will Lopez be the only true Center on his team?

by jerry25 on Jul 24, 2010 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

It will be posted at 9:30.

McGee is on his team. Chandler is on the other team.

I'm with the Brook Lopez Sucks crowd...

I just wish the rest of the team sucked that bad.

Brook?

Unless he is just not ready to play, because of the mono, he is the best choice out of the three guys left in camp. If not for the mono, this should have been a no brainer. Too bad, but maybe if Brook gets booted, it is better for us, he rests up, regains his strength and is ready for camp.

I think he is fully recovered from the Mono, and they say he gained his weight back (though he looks thin to me).

However, what he needs now is conditioning, and I can’t think of a better way than to compete with Team USA.

As said earlier, no BIG will be dropped until a few days before the first game that actually counts. He will have time to prove himself. I suspect he wouldn’t play more than 18 minutes tonight, unfortunately. I was hoping McGee would be on the Other team.

Brook Lopez....

plays like a back-up center on a team…If he can just convince himself that he is a starting center on an NBA team , he will be a perennial All-Star….
