Battie Signs with Philly; Celtics Approach Hayes

Tony Battie became the second Nets free agent to sign with another team, joining the 76ers presumably for the veterans minimum.  Ed Stefanski said Philly signed him to provide a "veterans presence".  Battie appeared in 15 games for the Nets last season.

WIth Keyon Dooling signing with the Bucks and Battie with the 76ers, five players from last year's team remain free agents: Josh Boone, Jarvis Hayes, Trenton Hassell, Chris Quinn and Bobby Simmons.  The Celtics reportedly have approached Hayes in the past few days.

I can’t believe he was a former top 5 pick. Good luck Tony, thanks for the 15 games in NJ.

As much as I agree

I appreciate the constant updates on all things Nets. It’s what makes this site so great.

Somewhere, there is a Nets fan who cares incredibly about Tony Battie, and this update is meant for him/her.

I wonder if he holds the record for most air-balled free throws in a season

by smp369 on Jul 21, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

He gets hurt a lot. Though it would be nice to have a veteran on this team. And Jarvis, when healthy, was a good player off the bench.

by NetsNewark on Jul 21, 2010 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Tony’s job will be to wear a nice suit, sit behind the bench and look reproachfully at Philly fans who start screaming at the 76er players, "you are losing to the #$&!% Nets, you #&$% $%## losers!

$16.5 million, as I recall.

and again, he is recovering from his latest knee surgery with no date set for his return.

Yes, and it's a player option

So unless he pulls an RJ….which I severely doubt, he’s staying in Denver

I think he already exercised it since Free Agency is already weeks in.

Plus, he’s injured for at least 1/4 of the season. No team would really sign him at this point in time.

by Jbller3 on Jul 21, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

nets could take on his contract

by mid season if he’s healthy by then, according to Keber

what's the obsession with K Mart

I mean, I have fond memories of him as well, but come on

What About..

SWAT + Rafer Alston?

I guess they weren’t our free agents at the end of the year but they still helped us suck!

by Jack Handy Jr on Jul 21, 2010 6:46 PM EDT reply actions

boone would actually be good for us, if only he learned how to shoot his free throws. it’s really frustrating cos there were reports that he’s good at his free throws in practice. damn.

by Fr@nkl1n on Jul 21, 2010 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

NO!!!

Time to move away from the past, Josh Boone on any other team would be benched. Plus this isnt like Kiki or Frank. Avery wont play Josh Boone

by RandyOreens on Jul 21, 2010 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i wasn’t saying we should sign boone. just airing out my frustration with boone and his free throws…

i mean, cmon, he spent like how many years in the league! he should’ve learned how to shoot the free throws by then. he’s a friggin millionaire. there is just no excuse. ugh.

by Fr@nkl1n on Jul 21, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Shaq's FT shooting was awful even during his peak

I’m not saying we should sign Boone as well..
=)

there's no excuse for being bad at free throws period

you’re unguarded, it’s a set shot, you can take your time… what more do you want?

by Taylor Bartle on Jul 21, 2010 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Boone is a great off the bench guy. Its not like he is Shaq or anyone drawing defenses to him where he actually in a position to even take FT’s. what did we lose from him 2 points a game if that?

by Tim823 on Jul 21, 2010 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Why

Sign someone you have no intentions of playing? Best of luck Boone.

by Ely Younger on Jul 21, 2010 6:56 PM EDT reply actions

It should be Petro

whom we have no intention of playing.

Vets Minimum, YES!

I’d sign Hayes and Boone for the Vet’s Min, otherwise, I think they are going to have to learn how to speak Hebrew for “pick and roll”.

Never understoond Tony’s role on the team last year. Wasn’t he still a decent player?

by panet on Jul 21, 2010 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

no one understood anyone's role on the team last year

they should feel fortunate that we even refer to them as a “team”

agreed

as far as I’m concerned the Nets only played about 30 games last year…then I stopped wasting my time and enjoyed my winter and spring.

Ever see a guy say "goodbye" to a shoe before?!

Re-Sign Boone

At least he competed last year, probably more so than anyone else on the team consistently. He can’t shoot fts but he is a good energy guy off the bench, he rebounds and puts in a few around the basket. He deserves to come back for another season or two.

by IsaacNJN on Jul 22, 2010 10:12 AM EDT reply actions

Tony Battie was on the Nets???

hmm, who knew?
