Nets Make It Official: Mitchell, Krystkowiak Top Assistants

Avery Johnson told season ticket-holders about it Wednesday. Now it's official.  The Nets will have five assistant coaches, including two former head coaches.

Sam Mitchell of the Raptors, who like Johnson is a former NBA Coach of the Year, and Larry Krystkowiak of the Bucks will join holdovers John Loyer and Tom Barrise and former Mavericks assistant Popeye Jones.

Johnson, Mitchell and Krystkowiak all signed multi-year deals with their former teams before being fired.

Is this average?

How many coaches on a team usually?

by Oriel on Jul 19, 2010 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

Obviously a much improved staff from what we had

With lawrence Frank and co. and of course’s last year’s minor league group but jury is still out on Avery as a true championship coach. Sam Mitchell was an outstanding addition but Eric Musselman should have been chosen over Larry K, that is the decision that really baffles me.

Wow...

You get baffled by the selection of our 5th coach.

yup its gonna make a real difference

Isn't it exciting? :)

I’m glad Avery didn’t hire Musselman.
He didn’t do anything here at Sacramento, but get into the news for being arrested.

Krystkowiak

was the big man’s assistant coach at Milwaukee before becoming head coach, worked with Bogut, particularly on his defense. He got the head coach job in part because of the terrific work he did with Bogut.

The Nets have enough YOUNG big men to warrant more than one big man coach, which is Popeye Jones main role.

by Net Income on Jul 19, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe he can even do some work with petro

by Benl1 on Jul 19, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

espn’s deph chart has petro at a 4 position (starting)

by Ely Younger on Jul 19, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Krystkowiak, Mitchell, and Popeye

are a nice big three to coach Brook and Derrick. I’m hoping that Roy Rogers’s tutelage is felt to have run its course, and now these three guys have new wrinkles to offer.

Nets = Global
Knicks = Local

that's GREAT information Net Income

but sorry, Musselman is still a better coach than your guy Krystkowiak.

"Johnson, Mitchell and Krystkowiak all signed...

… multi-year deals with their former teams"

Does this mean the Nets don’t have to pay them or, if so, very little (I know this is the case with AJ, but M & K also)? No wonder we have so many asst coaches – they’re cheaper by the dozen!

offset clauses

are part of every head coach (and a lot of assistant coaches) contracts. The deal is guaranteeed but if a coach, after being fired, takes another job, his original contract is reduced -“offset”- by the amount of money the coach gets from his new contract.

So if Avery Johnson’s contract with the Mavericks (which ends this season) paid him $4 million, the Nets could pay him less and he would still get that $4 million. I believe that Mitchell is also being paid $4 million by the Raptors and Krystkowiak $2 million by the Bucks.

As Dave D wrote the other day, Rod Thorn was always careful with the boss’ money, no matter who the boss was. I bet the Nets have some deal whereby they pay less than full freight in each case until the original contract runs out.

Last year by the way

John Loyer was still being paid by the 76ers—$300,000—so the Nets saved money there.

Dont know if he is still being paid by the 76ers.

these are the right assistants to help develop and toughen up a young team, wish we could get Nate Mcmillan also

by Benl1 on Jul 19, 2010 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

nice

we went from a no coaching staff 2 a stacked coaching staff.

by maddbat on Jul 19, 2010 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

i kind of blame the lack of yi’s development on the fact that the nets never helped contribute with the right coaches

by Benl1 on Jul 19, 2010 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

Good

I wonder if we hired all those people (i.e. scouts, video coordinators and extra physicians we fired or let go last year.

And so said the old man!

Follow the Bucks

I think the nets are better than the Bucks team that won 46 games last year.
Nets can probably win 50 games if they are commited<key word to defense and stay healthy.
Harris vs. Jennings
Lee vs. Delfino
Outlaw vs. Salmons
Smith vs. Ilosova
Lopez vs. Bogut

Williams vs. Stackhouse/Redd
Farmar vs. Ridnour
James vs. Luc Mab a Moute/Warrick
Morrow vs. Bell
Petro vs. Thomas/Gadzuric
Humpries vs. Brezec

by JJ25 on Jul 19, 2010 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

Love the optimism but 50 GAMES?!!? The Nets off season moves are not a +40 difference.

If they won 34 games and were gelling and on the way to a solid foundation I would call the season a success.

Since the face been revealed the game got real

by BL3ACH on Jul 19, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes the team committed to staying in New Jersey

just re-signed a REAL star, while the team with a foot and a half out the door signed 4 bench players.

Wow...

Nice to see a sense of humor.

Can I buy you your first ticket to Barclay’s to see the Nets play?

I think I win that honor...

Maybe between you, me and DollarBills we can chip in and buy him a floor seat

I know he'll be 44, that's why I'm asking what the norm is for players to retire.

& it’s alrite! He’s a great player obviously who’ll be paid close to the amount what LeBron will be paid.

by Jbller3 on Jul 19, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Solid coaching staff, solid collection of young talent

I feel good about this upcoming season, can’t wait to see the Nets return to defensive minded, fast breaking, high flying basketball!!
