Favors: Nets Have "Very Good Interest"
In a May 20 interview during the NBA Draft Combine, Derrick Favors told reporters that the Nets have expressed interest in him. Asked if he sensed "genuine interest" from Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe when they spoke with him the night before, Favors answered, "I felt there was very good interest." He added, "they said they want someone who will come in and work hard, get every rebound...just play hard every minute out there."
Favors also said he was hearing from his agent that he could go as high as #3. Among the reporters were Fred Kerber and David Aldridge. The Georgia Tech product, who laughed off suggestions he may need to learn Russian, said "I think I can be that guy" to rebound and defend at the power forward position next to Brook Lopez.
Asked to compare his game to current NBA players, Favors replied "Amare Stoudemire and Kevin Garnett." Kudoes to NJQuestCat for finding the video.

What a great off-season
I want this kid as a NET.
I want Avery Johnson as the NETS coach.
I would love Messina as an assistant coach.
I would love a low cost hard working solid veteran PF like Scola.
I would love a stone cold shooter and could settle for Gay if he did not kill our cap space for 2011. And use one or both of the other draft picks to try and find a shooter to bomb threes and space the floor.
I want to see this young team with one year under a proven coach and a consistent system and a real infrastructure from trainers to scouts to film guys to develop as a team and sneak into the playoffs.
I want to see Melo run home to Brooklyn in 2011 and take us from a first round exiters to contenders…..I would settle for Lebron this year if he wants to share his royal highness with us.
Define “low cost” for Scola. The guy just had a pretty big season, he’s going to try to cash in on it.
He made $3.3 million last year
he is a restricted free agent so Houston can match.
I would think the bidding starts at around $5 million, but the real issue is how many years. He’s 30 years old. YOu want to give a 30 year old a contract starting at $5 million over four years? I wouldn’t. And that is what it might take to convince the Rockets not to match.
Dave D said he thinks Scola will get around $8-9 million a year over 4 years. Also, Houston’s gm has already said they’ll do anything they can to keep him, bc Leslie Alexander loves him and has given him permission to do anything he has to in order to keep him. Morey actually talked as if it’s a given Scola isn’t going anywhere.
8-9 million....
a season for Scola? Holy crap dude. Not at 30. I think Hollinger’s assessment of PF decline once they get into their early 30s may have some merit to it, I don’t risk signing him for anything more than 5-6 per for 3 years, with a 4th year being a Team option. Of course, he probably will get a better deal than that, and more power to him, because he roflstomped our bigs the last time I saw him play.
Let Houston take care of their players. That kind of loyalty is why Richard Jefferson is making 15 million dollars next season….I’m not saying its bad to take care of your players, but within reason.
The ideal scenario, if Turner doesn’t drop down to us, is to draft Favors at 3, and then sign Scola as a stop gap and eventual reserve. It looks like that scenario looks shot too. Going into the season with Favors, Yi, and The Hump at the 4 is not a good look, and I’m sure most of us here will be rightfully disgruntled. That extra year for Yi is really becoming a pain in the ass.
The problem I have right now is that okay, we draft Favors. Cool. I have no problems with that because I’d prefer that our C/PF duo compliment each other. But if he isn’t ready to do anything but ride the pine for 2 years it makes no sense to make a pitch at Amare Stoudemire if we’re grooming a kid like Favors.
3rd pick….man, the basketball gods gave us a screwing so hard this time around, that it makes a Sasha Grey movie look tame.

8-9 mil a year for Scola would be crazy. Dave D must be high when he wrote that.
I highly doubt if Houston or anyone else offers him that much
yeah
Dave must have taken a small bump before sitting down at his laptop.

here's the link
He actually said $9-11M per!!!!!!!!!
http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2010/04/mails_in_april_edition.html
Scola and Lee are going to come in at $9-11M per. Haslem will come in at $8M. All of them will get four or five years wherever they land.
I think Dave D is right on the money
Yi makes 3, Hump makes 4, Scola will probly get 6-8 here or elsewhere. He’s still cheaper than DLee.
Yi's on his rookie contract, his salary is set and is no indication of market value
Humphries’ was an extension
Like I said before
No mater how you slice the Nets are going to drafting a PF who needs some polish in this draft. They’re gonna have to get veteran PF to fill in while Favors or whoever they draft fills the role.

I think its worth giving a 30 year old that kind of contract considering...
he’s the best of the bunch on both ends and his ego seems to be the most tolerable of the bunch other than say David Lee. He seems like the type of player who would invaluable to the development of both Brook and Favors. He could develop Favors for two years until it came to the point of which (if all went well with Favors) he could be a quality backup at between the ages of 33 and 35.
I’d rather give him a big contract than Boozer who’s attitude i just don’t like. If they’re gonna create some chemistry and develop the young guys they should pick the best talent with the best mentoring potential. To me among the PFs that’s Scola.
Who do you guys think would be the best mentor PF of the bunch?
I want Scola here too
…but imagine paying a 34 year old Scola 9 million flat.
Reality sets in quick for the human body after age 30.

if he other options are giving 12-13 million to David Lee
or max money to Boozer or Amare I’d rather give 5 million to Scola.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
No way on the max money to Stat or Boozer
Injury History, Attitude, Leadership ability, Development of Brook, We’ll need to give Brook Max money in a few years if he continues on his current path don’t forget that. We can’t have 3 max players.

being concise isn't bad especially if he speaks with his actions...he seems like the type of guy who would do that
from the interviews i’ve seen he’s actually been coming off as quite smart to me. The kids got good character.
Agreed.
He may not be all that eloquent but I put that down to a combination of three things…
1. His age
2. Possible nervousness
3. A probable lack of media training
Like I’ve said before, nothing I’ve seen from him in any interview footage so far would discourage me from taking him with the #3 pick… but of course I’m not Rockin’ Rod.

Nothing to worry about.
Tim Duncan isn’t exactly Mr. Charismatic in interviews either… As long as he produces on the court, he’ll be ok. We’ve had our share of attitude problems these past few seasons, if our pick is quiet or nervous with the media, let’s count it as a plus.

Draft
All that’s left is getting Paul George!!!
by UltimateNetsFan on Jun 7, 2010 11:26 AM EDT reply actions
Id like to see them go after Stanley Robinson, another strong wing player under Calhouns system, has a strong athletic body, needs to develop better shooting but he looks like he can be better than Rudy Gay.
Stanley Robinson
I like Robinson too; however, I just don’t think he’s the right fit if the Nets draft Favors. I saw him a lot at Conn, and I love Robinson’s jaw-dropping athleticism, rebounding, and shot blocking. He does NOT, however, have a consistent jump shot, and the Nets DESPERATELY need someone that can stretch the floor. I wouldn’t mind if the Nets got Robinson, but I would LOVE it if the Nets got Paul George because he not only has the talent, but his skill-set is PERFECT for what the Nets currently have, and will be a cost-effective alternative to Rudy Gay.

Favors is going to dominate in the nba, and he will love playing with player like Harris Twill and Brook who can all get him the ball in the right spots where he doesnt have to create his own shot. On the other hand he has already learned how to create a lot of his offense by himself, get him a good coach to develop his post work and he can be a beast, plus if the nets bring in shaq, he will help develop this kid, turn him into an all star.
Any other video footage?
The only video footage I have seen of Favors shows him dunking dozens of times, with a block or two mixed in. His selling points are rebounding and defending. I’d love to see footage of him in those roles against good college players. The highlight reel shows some put-backs but that’s it in the rebounding department….Any tips on where to look? Based on the interview, I wonder if he ever passes off a rebound. Any word on whether he can pass the ball?
Cousins vs. Favors
After being quiet about the whole Favors v. Cousins debate………… cuz i knew little of both
i’m actually starting to lean toward Favors……… Favors and Lopez may work well together… if his upside is Amare……….then its like having future studs of Lopez and Amare………. this kid is raw……….no doubt about it………. but his upside is to great to pass
that being said………Cousins is a beast too LOL
I saw Favors play at least 10 times last year
I feel really comfortable with drafting Favors. I saw Tech play at least 10 times last year (I’m an alum) and (as have been noted here several times) most of Favor’s early struggles were attributable to (i) terrible guard play, (ii) even worse coaching and (iii) the prescense of an upper classman who played the exact same position (Lawal).
As the season went on, Favors became more dominant (vis a vis both Lawal and opponents) and posted really strong numbers through the end of the ACC regular season, the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament.
Day one, he would be able to help with rebounding and interior defense (areas in which we are in desparate need). On the offensive side of things, he needs to work on his low post game, but already has a nice soft mid range jumper, is a hard worker and is very coachable. A lot has been made on this blog of the fact that he’s not the most articulate cat in the world….fair enough, but please keep in mind that the kid is only 18 years old (he’s the youngest player in the entire draft) and he has admitted that he was nervous in the interview process (afraid to say the wrong thing).
Is he the finished product? By no means, but (in my humble opinion) he has all the intangibles necessary to be an all star level PF. He would be the perfect compliment to Brook (he can even play a bit of 5) and our frontline will be set for the next 10 years.
Yeah. I think some people hear the southern accent and automatically assume he’s stupid. That really, really bothers me.
I’ve spent some free time watching every GT game I could get my hands on and his BBIQ isn’t a problem. I just think his conditioning could stand to improve as his motor comes and goes.

I actually posted this video like 2 weeks ago on the Favors vs Cousins thread on the forum side of the website…but I guess someone else took credit for it :S

sorry man...credit it to you. I just stumbled on it on youtube and wanted to do writeup cuz...
that guy who did that Favors college mix finally responded to me.
Favors is huge for someone with his athleticism...
No comparison to Tyrus Thomas or even Chandler. Favors is wide.
He HAS to be the pick...
Rod needs to not overthink this one. Worry about FA on July 1st but do the right thing on draft night with Favors.
by rundmc00 on Jun 7, 2010 3:36 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
He's a great kid...I am warming up to Favors more and more...I would be very happy to get Favors...
I am just worried we’ll have 2 robotic post players on the Nets and although Favors’ lack of ballhandling and range makes him not so much of a perfect compliment to Brook as people think, he does complement Brook MORE than Cousins.
Interviews
Don’t look too much in to interviews guys. Favors is 18 and hasn’t had much media training. A lot of guys are quiet and don’t know how to naturally talk to the media. It doesn’t mean he isn’t a leader or a good kid. Favors barely got post touches, played with terrible guards and in a bad system and didn’t complain all year. Instead of pouting, he worked hard on the offensive glass and got his touches that way. That should speak volumes about his character and how well he’d fit with any offense. Much more than dumb questions where you’re required to give dumb answers (you can’t really be honest without getting killed).
