With the #3 Pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, the New Jersey Nets Select Derrick Favors

After a month of speculation, feints, smoke screens and misdirection, the Nets picked the player they were long expected to: Georgia Tech's 6'10" PF Derrick Favors.  The 18-year-old from Atlanta was chosen because of all the big men in the draft, Favors was seen as the player best equipped to play alongside Brook Lopez.

Whether we keep him or trade him for assets Favors is the right pick. Several GM’s think he will be a monster once he develps, and his risk level is low due to his work ethic. Great pick, either our PF for the next 10 years or a tradeable asset to make our team better.

    Serious Question

Did Jay Bilas talk about Derrick Favors like the #3 Ranked Player in the Draft?

In his TOP 10 he had Favors ranked #3, ahead of Wes Johnson and Cousins, but did it sound like he was talking about the 3rd best player in the draft when he commented on the Nets selection?

We're getting Damion James, I like it
It may not be easy to immediately identify a clear-cut role for James, as he’s a bit of a jack of all trades master of none, and is clearly stuck between the small forward and power forward positions at this point. With that said, NBA teams are always in need of tough, aggressive players who are productive and can contribute in a variety of ways, which is why James will be coveted on draft day.

I'm not totally down on this

Crawford is a bad defender, Whiteside is EXTREMELY raw. You wanna talk raw you take a look at whiteside. Plus DX has this to say about James:

Despite being knocked for most of his career for not being a very good defender, it was difficult to find much evidence of that from the tape we took in. Sporting a terrific 7-1 wingspan, a chiseled frame and standing nearly 6-8 in shoes, James has all the physical tools needed to be an excellent defender, especially when you consider his terrific toughness and aggressiveness.

That clearly manifests itself on the court as well, as he is very active, uses his body extremely effectively, does a good job of utilizing his length to contest shots, and gets his hands on a ton of loose balls. James is a playmaker on the defensive end, getting in the passing lanes on a regular basis, blocking shots at a good rate, and doing a great job on the defensive glass. His lateral quickness on the perimeter may not be stellar, but it looks more than adequate for the NBA level. In fact, he seemed to do a better job guarding the perimeter from the film we saw than in the post, where his lack of size can get exposed at times.

    Damion james
James’ biggest strength clearly revolves around how hard he plays, a part of his game we don’t seem to have emphasized strongly enough in previous reports, and a skill in its own right. He brings an unbelievable amount of energy to the floor every time he steps out onto the court, being incredibly aggressive in pretty much everything he does.

That manifests itself in a number of areas—the way he runs the floor in transition, crashes the offensive glass, cuts and finishes at the rim, and just the overall toughness he offers. He is the leading rebounder in Big 12 history, averaging over 10 boards per game this season, and regularly is the one coming out of a crowd with a loose ball in traffic when his team needs an extra possession.

A Project at #3 was bad enough, but trading 27 and 31 for 24 (Damion Jones), when IMO we could have landed TWO BETTER PLAYERS than Jones with what was left on the board, well that is flatout inexcusable and as a NETS FAN I am livid.

Just another player that can score but can’t do anything else. Crawford is 6’4, so he’s going to be an undersized defender. Scorers are found everywhere, we can find them easily. But finding a guy like James (strong, good defense, good role player) is valuable.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

We get the shooter/scorer that we need in Crawford and have a nice shot at a decent back-up center at 31, and we end up trading them for an undersized 4 that we hope can play the 3. And can’t shoot— 67% FT. If we don’t pick up a second round pick, and I doubt we will, this is a major disappointment.

by jabez on Jun 24, 2010 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

Getting a pick for Armon Johnson would be nice….or Whiteside if we do intend on trading Favors.

by Chris2 on Jun 24, 2010 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

who on this team can shoot?

Not Favors or James. We’ll need to get Ray Allen in FA.

I don’t know much about James, but, if he is an all out hustling moose that rebounds, I like the move! DEFENSE wins games. AND he will push Brook and Favors when he is playing at the 3. We just got two great rebounders! We NEEDED that!

    LETS GO NETS!

by JustinNJ on Jun 24, 2010 10:18 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

    6 foot 7, 225 is not a moose

He’s a CDR-type, brings effort and intensity to your team.

    CDR type?

You mean a whiny ball hog with no D?

We should pick up a few 2nd rounders...

    Draft Armon and Hobson.

Non-guaranteed contracts, it would be nice

by Nets4Life on Jun 24, 2010 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

    Just turned off the draft

I can’t even watch this anymore, I’m too sick too my stomach

Just when I was preparing to except the Favors pick provided we made two good later selections, we trade those two picks with some excellent prospects left on the board (Crawford, Whiteside, etc.), and for what what, for a classic over-achiever (translation: not particularly talented)

    UN FRIGGIN BELIEVABLE

I would feel better about this draft

if Favors wasn’t such a big question mark. Might be a bust, hopefully he’ll be a stud.

by darrell1 on Jun 24, 2010 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

    sure

Crawford and whiteside are studs i know

by wb415 on Jun 24, 2010 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

    Im gonna bet

You have seen Crawford on youtube and never seen Whiteside. am I rite?

by wb415 on Jun 24, 2010 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

Suuure whiteside is an excellent player.
Whiteside’s fundamentals, basketball IQ and overall awareness are well below average, even considering his freshman status. He at times looks out of place in Marshall’s half-court offense, looking as if he’s not quite sure where he should be at any particular moment, which at this late stage in the season makes you wonder about his ability to process an NBA team’s far more complex playbook.

Whiteside had a very difficult time qualifying academically for college, only actually getting into school at age 20, and is reportedly having problems staying eligible now that he’s already there, which will likely leave him no choice but to enter this year’s draft.

"Immature" is the word you hear most often associated with Whiteside both on and off the court, as there will certainly be a large degree of hand-holding and coddling that whichever team drafts him needs to do in order to help him reach his full potential. There are major questions about his work ethic and intensity level, which is a bit concerning considering how far off he currently is from being able to contribute to an NBA team. We also need to keep in mind that despite his freshman status, he’s the same age as many college juniors, turning 21 this upcoming June. This obviously limits his upside to a certain degree.

He literally had no choice but to declare because he was too dumb!

by muwu on Jun 24, 2010 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Fine, then take Crawford and Armon Johnson

But there was no reason to trade those two picks for an “over-achiever”

Anytime that’s the best thing someone can say about someone, that he’s an over-achiever, you know you just picked someone who is NOT particulary talented.

by Dobermite on Jun 24, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

You know why he overachieved? Because he was able to achieve greater heights than his talent would suggest

You know why he was able to do that?

So you ding him for being better than he is because he played incredibly hard, tough and aggressively? And you would call out Favors for having no heart?

by muwu on Jun 24, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

    YES

Because I like players who are …. tough AND talented

Why does it have to be one or the other?

by Dobermite on Jun 24, 2010 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

    Are there left?

Jordan Crawford is a scorer, I highly doubt there is another player left that is on the same level as James defensively

    so let’s get this straight:

    immature
    unintelligent
    bad work ethic
    old for his draft status
    completely raw skill level

yeah, i’m so distraught that we missed out on this kid. please. he makes SWAT sound like tim duncan.

    1. Favors
    2. Crawford
    3. Robinson

Couls have had all of them? Whhhhhyyyyy???!!!!

    Another snooze move for Thorn

So Cuban buys Dominique Jones from Memphis. Where are you Thorn? This guy could help us. We spend two picks on the 24 pick and Dallas buys outright the 25 pick. Fire Thorn!

At least the Knicks whiffed too

Say what you want, but the Knicks picks are not going to help get Lebron. Low ceiling guys for sure. They must be pretty sure they can get some bigs on the FA market. That or they think Bender and Curry are the answer. Hard to understand why they drafted a 3 unless they are dumping Chandler. Strange.

by jabez on Jun 24, 2010 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

    That sucks

Tiny Gallon would have been a Net if Thorn could have gotten a pick for CDR.

    Nets wanted Gallon.

by jerry25 on Jun 24, 2010 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

Which leads me to this question:

Why did Rod Thorn trade CDR 2 days befor the draft? If they waited until tonight maybe they could’ve grabbed someone they had their eye on.
