With the #3 Pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, the New Jersey Nets Select Derrick Favors
After a month of speculation, feints, smoke screens and misdirection, the Nets picked the player they were long expected to: Georgia Tech's 6'10" PF Derrick Favors. The 18-year-old from Atlanta was chosen because of all the big men in the draft, Favors was seen as the player best equipped to play alongside Brook Lopez.

i hope i'm wrong
i wanted cuz and still rooting for a trade. I just have a sick feeling he’s a bust, but in Rod i trust
This is the kid that Lopez wanted up front with him all along
I remember when he was asked, he specifically mentioned Favors. Brook understands he needs rebounding and shotblocking next to him. Lets hope this kid’s got some guts

Definitely the best available player, and best Lopez match!

If they took Cousins, they would've seen him as a trade asset too, otherwise they would have drafted him

Cousins was BPA...but the Nets and Wolves don't need another Center...
by jirohkanzaki on Jun 24, 2010 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions
A 12-win team takes the BPA, and that was DeMarcus Cousins.
Three thin and mediocre 4s (Favors, Yi, Hump) and only one 5 (Brook) who’s just lost 30 pounds.
Mistake (especially with the FAs out there), but I’ll root for him.
I don’t see Favors being traded.
Texas slang in a Big Apple minute, by a friendly OED consultant. http://www.barrypopik.com
Hump will be the starter.
Quick, Thorn better extend Humps contract to get him to stay, because he will be Avery’s starting 4.
I don't think this is over by a long shot.
This pick feels like it’s ripe to be shopped. This night is far from over, IMO.
In Rod We Trust
Root for him now he is a NET!!!
YOu wanted someone else but we have him now so get on board. AT least wish him well.
Xavier Henry
I wish there were someway to get Henry, pretty sure he’s going to be a star. At least better than Wes Johnson.
FAVORS!
Or whomever they trade him for! ;>)
Favors is THE right pick
Whether we keep him or trade him for assets Favors is the right pick. Several GM’s think he will be a monster once he develps, and his risk level is low due to his work ethic. Great pick, either our PF for the next 10 years or a tradeable asset to make our team better.
Bilas's formula
“Wing span…athleticism…has the raw skills but needs to hone…still very young…”
For almost every pick so far. Maybe not Turner.
Damn all the favor haters are out in force
The kid is a great pick. Give me Armon Johnson and Stanley Robinson. Call it a night

After Favors is traded, you won't care anymore.
Maybe it will come tonight, maybe tomorrow,
Maybe in your sleep,
Maybe Next month when PF FAs and LeBron aren’t interested in Nets,
But Favors WILL BE TRADED.
"Favors is OUT"

FAVORS IS OUT
AVERY LOVES COUSINS
THORN ALWAYS PICKS BPA- Oh that one is correct.
Maybe he will be traded, maybe not, but if hes trade bait they thought he was a BETTER Trade asset than Cousins, supposedly the BPA. I thought BPA would have better trade value.

WOW
Hayward was 5"4" in eighth grade and grew to 6"8" as a high school senior? That’s ridonculous.
You're crazy for saying that.
All projections had him this high.
Favors was ranked 3rd best prospect in this draft by practically everyone
And some had him ranked #2, and there are some who think he will be best player in this draft. We will see..but he was no reach. Now Paul George…thats another story
Hayward was definitely a reach...but hes going to the right team

Serious Question
Did Jay Bilas talk about Derrick Favors like the #3 Ranked Player in the Draft?
In his TOP 10 he had Favors ranked #3, ahead of Wes Johnson and Cousins, but did it sound like he was talking about the 3rd best player in the draft when he commented on the Nets selection?
DIDN’T SOUND THAT WAY TOO ME
No doubt, Jerry
And did you notice Van Gundy had nothing good to say about Favors either?
Started talking about the Avery and the culture of the Nets, blah blah blah, but not one complimentary word about Favors game.
Really?...
As Mark Jackson would say: you’re better than that.
Among Bilas' comments:
Favors has all the tools to be a truly outstanding power forward, can run the floor, has NBA body, is very explosive, has ability to finish.
And yes, he has some work to do on offense.

Completely disagree.
He fits the team perfectly, the West better watch out because now OKC has the interior size and defense they lacked last season. The Zombie-Sonics could compete with the Lakers for the WC (barring free agency). Wow. Good trade by Pruti.

We're getting Damion James, I like it
It may not be easy to immediately identify a clear-cut role for James, as he’s a bit of a jack of all trades master of none, and is clearly stuck between the small forward and power forward positions at this point. With that said, NBA teams are always in need of tough, aggressive players who are productive and can contribute in a variety of ways, which is why James will be coveted on draft day.
well (outside of Favors) we have no small forwards or power forwards
so being stuck between those positions is good.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Which proves that Nets are going for LeBron and a PF in FA
But would DLee come to Nets after getting Favors? His pricetag would rise because PT may be less.
Not sure that was great
There were some promising guys who slipped, we could’ve gotten whiteside and someone else maybe for 27 and 31
I think I would have kept 27 and drafted Crawford
Although James is a tough dude, who will get mins immediately at the 3

I'm not totally down on this
Crawford is a bad defender, Whiteside is EXTREMELY raw. You wanna talk raw you take a look at whiteside. Plus DX has this to say about James:
Despite being knocked for most of his career for not being a very good defender, it was difficult to find much evidence of that from the tape we took in. Sporting a terrific 7-1 wingspan, a chiseled frame and standing nearly 6-8 in shoes, James has all the physical tools needed to be an excellent defender, especially when you consider his terrific toughness and aggressiveness.
That clearly manifests itself on the court as well, as he is very active, uses his body extremely effectively, does a good job of utilizing his length to contest shots, and gets his hands on a ton of loose balls. James is a playmaker on the defensive end, getting in the passing lanes on a regular basis, blocking shots at a good rate, and doing a great job on the defensive glass. His lateral quickness on the perimeter may not be stellar, but it looks more than adequate for the NBA level. In fact, he seemed to do a better job guarding the perimeter from the film we saw than in the post, where his lack of size can get exposed at times.

For the uninformed, JAG = Just Another Guy … meaning a dime-a-dozen player
omg
wat is thorn thinking. this is unbelievable. I really do not understand this move at all. A big trade better be coming right now.
Damion james
James’ biggest strength clearly revolves around how hard he plays, a part of his game we don’t seem to have emphasized strongly enough in previous reports, and a skill in its own right. He brings an unbelievable amount of energy to the floor every time he steps out onto the court, being incredibly aggressive in pretty much everything he does.
That manifests itself in a number of areas—the way he runs the floor in transition, crashes the offensive glass, cuts and finishes at the rim, and just the overall toughness he offers. He is the leading rebounder in Big 12 history, averaging over 10 boards per game this season, and regularly is the one coming out of a crowd with a loose ball in traffic when his team needs an extra possession.

How can you hate this with a late first?
“The Hawks have traded this pick to the Nets for the 27th and 31st picks. James is an excellent pick for the Nets. He doesn’t have huge upside but he’s a tough guy who can play both both forward positions. If he improves his outside shot, he can be a James Posey-type player in the pros. Good value here.”

are we going to break the bank for Miller?
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
he's an rfa
i can’t imagine they don’t keep him

Damion James
is also a Senior (relatively low upside) and according to DE:
“Damion James looks solid, but unspectacular across the board.” when comparing him to other SF in this draft.
There are PLENTY of other “solid” players both in the draft and FA.

Crawford is instant offense and can shoot
Robinson is basically a James clone except longer

Sounds like another CDR
No thanks

I LOVE THIS TEAM
Maybe too much, so don’t question my Nets fandom
I’m Just expressing my absolute dejection over what I precieve as another miserable nite in a lifetime of miserable nites for this woebegotton organization. I could not have imagined Rod Thorn doing any worse than he did tonite in my view.
A Project at #3 was bad enough, but trading 27 and 31 for 24 (Damion Jones), when IMO we could have landed TWO BETTER PLAYERS than Jones with what was left on the board, well that is flatout inexcusable and as a NETS FAN I am livid.
If that makes me a bad fan so be it, but I am absolutely furious over this debacle!
Crawford is another CDR
Just another player that can score but can’t do anything else. Crawford is 6’4, so he’s going to be an undersized defender. Scorers are found everywhere, we can find them easily. But finding a guy like James (strong, good defense, good role player) is valuable.
Why is the best PF in the draft a debacle
He was #3 on almost every board. Maybe Cousins was better but you can’t play with 2 centers.
its not worth trying to argue

+1
No purchase of draft picks, no trades…for a seasoned GM and rich owner who wants to be in the playoffs next year, its pretty lackluster.
How many players do you want on this team?
We already drafted 2 players and the night is not over… Plus there’s free agency.
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
We get the shooter/scorer that we need in Crawford and have a nice shot at a decent back-up center at 31, and we end up trading them for an undersized 4 that we hope can play the 3. And can’t shoot— 67% FT. If we don’t pick up a second round pick, and I doubt we will, this is a major disappointment.
who on this team can shoot?
Not Favors or James. We’ll need to get Ray Allen in FA.
40% from 3 in the second half

I cant stand Calipari
He says this is the greatest day in kentucky history. Get out of here you used car salesman.
I don’t know much about James, but, if he is an all out hustling moose that rebounds, I like the move! DEFENSE wins games. AND he will push Brook and Favors when he is playing at the 3. We just got two great rebounders! We NEEDED that!
LETS GO NETS!

We should pick up a few 2nd rounders...
Draft Armon and Hobson.
Non-guaranteed contracts, it would be nice
Just turned off the draft
I can’t even watch this anymore, I’m too sick too my stomach
Just when I was preparing to except the Favors pick provided we made two good later selections, we trade those two picks with some excellent prospects left on the board (Crawford, Whiteside, etc.), and for what what, for a classic over-achiever (translation: not particularly talented)
UN FRIGGIN BELIEVABLE
:-(

I would feel better about this draft
if Favors wasn’t such a big question mark. Might be a bust, hopefully he’ll be a stud.
Im gonna bet
You have seen Crawford on youtube and never seen Whiteside. am I rite?
Suuure whiteside is an excellent player.
Whiteside’s fundamentals, basketball IQ and overall awareness are well below average, even considering his freshman status. He at times looks out of place in Marshall’s half-court offense, looking as if he’s not quite sure where he should be at any particular moment, which at this late stage in the season makes you wonder about his ability to process an NBA team’s far more complex playbook.
Whiteside had a very difficult time qualifying academically for college, only actually getting into school at age 20, and is reportedly having problems staying eligible now that he’s already there, which will likely leave him no choice but to enter this year’s draft.
"Immature" is the word you hear most often associated with Whiteside both on and off the court, as there will certainly be a large degree of hand-holding and coddling that whichever team drafts him needs to do in order to help him reach his full potential. There are major questions about his work ethic and intensity level, which is a bit concerning considering how far off he currently is from being able to contribute to an NBA team. We also need to keep in mind that despite his freshman status, he’s the same age as many college juniors, turning 21 this upcoming June. This obviously limits his upside to a certain degree.

He literally had no choice but to declare because he was too dumb!
Fine, then take Crawford and Armon Johnson
But there was no reason to trade those two picks for an “over-achiever”
Anytime that’s the best thing someone can say about someone, that he’s an over-achiever, you know you just picked someone who is NOT particulary talented.
You know why he overachieved? Because he was able to achieve greater heights than his talent would suggest
You know why he was able to do that?
So you ding him for being better than he is because he played incredibly hard, tough and aggressively? And you would call out Favors for having no heart?
YES
Because I like players who are …. tough AND talented
Why does it have to be one or the other?
Are there left?
Jordan Crawford is a scorer, I highly doubt there is another player left that is on the same level as James defensively
so let’s get this straight:
immature
unintelligent
bad work ethic
old for his draft status
completely raw skill level
yeah, i’m so distraught that we missed out on this kid. please. he makes SWAT sound like tim duncan.

the best part is
this is the same guy who thinks Favors sucks.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Yes, he said the usual standard stuff about all the research done in selecting Favors....(code word for good on paper)
Then asked JVG and Barry to apply to be his assistant coach.
Avery: "Any FA should be impressed with out basketball team"
YEAH RIGHT!!
You did NOTHING to improve this team tonite
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
Favors maybe makes us better in two or three years and Damion James is a dime-a-dozen roster filler who makes no difference whatsoever.
GET REAL, LITTLE MAN
Dude we got a Wes Johnson
under the name Damion James

My picks as of yesterday:
- Favors
- Crawford
- Robinson
Couls have had all of them? Whhhhhyyyyy???!!!!
Another snooze move for Thorn
So Cuban buys Dominique Jones from Memphis. Where are you Thorn? This guy could help us. We spend two picks on the 24 pick and Dallas buys outright the 25 pick. Fire Thorn!
Thorn's performance tonite was flatout pathetic
I wish he retired last week, before he could take a flame-thrower to this organization the way he did tonite.
lol @ knicks fans
stanford pick has them baffled.
Cruise control
If I see one more commercial for that stupid Tom Cruise movie, I’m going to become a Scientologist. And that’s not going to work for anyone.
At least the Knicks whiffed too
Say what you want, but the Knicks picks are not going to help get Lebron. Low ceiling guys for sure. They must be pretty sure they can get some bigs on the FA market. That or they think Bender and Curry are the answer. Hard to understand why they drafted a 3 unless they are dumping Chandler. Strange.
That sucks
Tiny Gallon would have been a Net if Thorn could have gotten a pick for CDR.
Nets wanted Gallon.
Which leads me to this question:
Why did Rod Thorn trade CDR 2 days befor the draft? If they waited until tonight maybe they could’ve grabbed someone they had their eye on.
What does that tell you?
No one really stuck out to them.
