Expect the Unexpected

It was two years ago that Rod Thorn unexpectedly dealt Richard Jefferson to the Bucks for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons and a year ago that he did the same with Vince Carter, sending the team captain and Ryan Anderson to the Magic for Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Tony Battie.  Don't expect Devin Harris to share the same fate.  "The expectation is that he will be here," Thorn said of Harris.

Still, with more rumors out there than ever before and free agency driving a lot of decisions, it would be surprising if the Nets weren't involved in their share.  Putting aside the possibility of a trade--Yi Jianlian's name comes up most often, there are reports of the Nets trying to move up to #19 by trading their two late picks to Boston, offering Keyon Dooling's attractive buyout package, demanding the #23 pick from the Timberwolves and simply buying a second round pick. Then, there's the big rumor that the Nets made an offer for Chris Paul, which team officials deny.

As of Thursday morning, Derrick Favors looks like the heavy favorite (we must overcome this) at #3 with Wesley Johnson, DeMarcus Cousins and Greg Monroe barely in the mix.

    My preferred scenarios

    1. Draft Cousins at 3
    2. Move down to number six and draft Monroe while picking up a nice young piece in the process (see Anthony Randolph).
    3. I’d be OK with drafting Johnson only if we ended up with a premier PF in free agency (Boozer or Stat). This would be a risky move.

    Gee, really...

You prefer Cousins…? We would have never figured… HAHA!! Its going to be fun, Thorn has everyone confused, there will be some wheeling and dealing today/night…

The Kings expect Derrick Favors and Wesley Johnson will be gone before them, and so starts the dominoes to set up the alignment of the draft lottery. The New Jersey Nets have Minnesota spinning now, unsure whether GM Rod Thorn’s interest with drafting Johnson over Favors is genuine or designed to be a rouse to elicit a draft pick out of the Timberwolves. The Wolves have long wanted Johnson, but if he’s gone, they would take Favors, the power forward out of Georgia Tech.

For New Jersey to let Minnesota have Johnson, league sources say the Nets want Minnesota’s pick at No. 23."

If we get CP3 that means Lebron is coming. Guaranteed.

by power_njerz on Jun 24, 2010 6:56 AM EDT reply actions

    with what money?

If we get CP3 it means we took on Okafors horrid contract which would be 25+ million for both and Paul. Subtract Devins 9 million and lets say Lee’s rookie scale contract of 1+ million. Unless we get Humphries not to opt in that saves us 4 million. But why would he do that? He wouldnt get that else where. It would be pretty close, but then you`d be left with

    CP3
    Twill
    LBJ
    Okafor
    Lopez

Great starting 5 but no money for a decent bench, and all teams that go deep in the playoffs need a bench that can contribute.

Hope it’s Yi’s last day as a Net. Dooling deal sounds very smart. In Rod We Trust. But who would take Yi? or Dooling? Unless we are giving them for free! Yormack is shaking.

Boston has been targeting Yi since he came into the league. They were going to take him with that draft pick they traded for Ray Allen if they couldn’t get Ray.

Back and forth... back and forth...

Unbelieveable! Favors, Turner dropping, back to Favors, Cousins, Wesley Johnson, a trade for Chris Paul, Monroe in a trade down, Wes Johnson solidified, back to Favors, and still rumblings about CP3!

My gut tells me we don’t move and the pick is Favors.

Then again that Chris Paul potential trade sounds worth the risk if it’s for real…

by Eskow on Jun 24, 2010 7:09 AM EDT reply actions

    My gut feeling

is that we end up with Monroe somehow. I still hope we take Cousins tho. Chris Sheridan says that he left Monday’s workout with the impression that DC has leapfrogged his way to the front of the line for No. 3.

My personal dislike for him aside, I don’t see Thorn taking a project like Favors (look at the precedents every time he’s selected in the lottery), nor Avery being interested in a player that raw.

What really really bothers me is this……..

Why did we not offer to trade the 31st pick to MIami for the 18th pick and Daquean Cook? Cook is off teh books next summer, is a young shooter (kid has won the 3point challenge All-Star weekend) and would be a great fit for a team needing a young shooter off the bench.

And at 18 we could have had Bledsoe. Seems like a small price to pay for our backup PG (and possible PG of the future).

Why are we discussing dealing the 27th and 31st pick to Boston for 19th when we could have taken the 18th while not giving up our 27th pick (Jordan Crawford perhaps) and gaining a proven NBA 3 point shooting threat on a 1 year deal? That is ridiculous.

by Ryan243 on Jun 24, 2010 9:10 AM EDT reply actions

Ryan -- it's all about cap space in Rod's eyes...

Not so sure I agree, but it is what it is. Taking on Cook’s contract and the contract of the 18th pick would be counter-productive to Rod’s current mission statement. Relax, the Nets are fine.

by NBRITM on Jun 24, 2010 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Something is really up and I'm hoping it's a good one

I don’t want to think what might have happen if we took the heats offer of MB for KD and what kind of players we could have gotten with the #18 and Daequan Cook.

by jasperjarrod on Jun 24, 2010 10:32 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

    Ryan,

Even though I doubt we are going to get Lebron, but do you want to help Miami by taking Cook off their books?

If they can convince Lebron to come to Miami, they would be able to get Wade, Lebron, and Bosh. Do you want to be the team that helped them win all those championships?

by SIC One on Jun 24, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Look – not sure if we have a legitimate shot at Lebron or not. I don’t think Lebron goes to Miami under any circumstances. I do think they get Bosh or Boozer to pair with Wade.

However, you have to ask yourself if signing Boozer, Amare, Bosh, Lee, etc is going to be beneficial for the future direction of the Nets. Does any of those guys put us into the champoinship mix? I think no. And would signing them actually hurt us going forward in terms of cap space that would possibly prevent us from resigning our young players or just be an albatross contract to a veteran who ends up out of rotation by year 3 of his deal?

I think signing any of those PF targets is a bigger risk than a potential benefit. I also believe firmly in using this year and next to rebuild and acquire the pieces to build a dynasty type roster. That is done thru the draft and smart trades. Never done via FA signings of max type players in late 20s.

by Ryan243 on Jun 24, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I do think that we see the Nets take Johnson at 3 leaving Favors to Minny at 4 – with a previously agreed upon swap on the table – where the Nets will then swap Johnson with Favors for one of Minny’s picks in the 20s which would guarantee us Crawford.

My perfect draft day would have been to make that Miami deal (for 18th and Cook) and end up with the following:

3rd pick becomes Favors (plus MInny’s 23rd pick)
    18 – Bledsoe (plus Cook for 31)
23 – Whiteside, Alabi or Crawford
    27 – Crawford

Trade Dooling expiring contract to Miami for the 31st pick (clears even more cap space for Miami) and take Gallon

Buy 2nd round pick for Stephenson.

by Ryan243 on Jun 24, 2010 9:14 AM EDT reply actions

This then means we could go all in for Lebron in free agency and if we don’t get him we sit pat and let our young players develop under Avery Johnson and a strong assistant coaching network (I would bring back Roy Rogers as discussed earlier) to pair with Popeye, Sam Mitchell, etc etc.

Next year we would have the opportunity to deal our picks for the best SF in the draft and we would have a very young team in place to truly make a run in the playoffs – which would align us very well from a talent and cap standpoint to win a championship in 5 years (per Proky’s 5 year plan).

Depends on a lot of factors. If we are unable to get rid of Humphries, I’m not sure if Gallon will be able to take minutes from Humphries right away, let alone the potential FA/#3 pick

the same goes with jordan crawford.

i think twills natural position is the 2…

by Andy. on Jun 24, 2010 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

T-Will can play 3 positions though, its very easy to find a spot for him on the court. Granted he’s a bit smaller than the prototypical SF, but he makes up for it with his leaping ability. T-Will and Crawford could definitely play at the same time, depending on who we’re playing against. Gotta avoid certain mismatches, but T-Will at the point could also provide a mismatch in our favor as long as the other PG isn’t too quick

by J-Kay on Jun 24, 2010 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

    The Day Has Finally Come...

I want the Nets to draft Favor, that’s my choice. But I would root for whoever we will end up getting. Even though Favors offensive game isn’t NBA ready yet, I believe that he can contribute on the defensive end. We will probably end up signing a PF during the Free Agency, and that player will probably start and Favor will come off the bench as he continues to develop in the next 2 or 3 years and than take over the starting position after that. For now I can see him playing both the 4 and some 5 if we he can put on some weight this summer.

I expect a lot of trades happening in the next 12 hours or so. This is going to be a crazy exciting day.

I will go on record as saying barring signing Lebron in free agency or dealing for Carmelo I am against any moves dealing away young players on this team in a sign and trade for an Amare, Boozer, etc. That would be an absolutely unmitigated disaster and will end badly for this franchise.

    Jayzes

This day has me shaking in FEAR! I hope ROD is taking tranqs to stay cool…trades our young core to MAYBE sign free agents I’ll absolutely destroy the man…somehow…Besides, we are in position to build an amazing product for 10+ years, going the FA route and discarding our core/top draft picks might kill the shelf life of whatever product ROD does arrange and give us like a 4/5 year window, instead of a decade! I just hope ROD is keeping cool…just go simple and steady…we are patient…we don’t need a winner tomorrow, we need a winner that will have a long span of success.

by adronaline on Jun 24, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Only because this thread is titled "Expect the Unexpected"...

.. I will throw this scenario out. I know reports now have us set on Favors, but if we kept him, and got another PF, would we be stacked on that position and not have a backup Center? All the big men we could get later in the draft are all PFs.

SO, what if this would happen (this would be the first time I’d jump on the Cousins wagon). Draft Cousins at 3. Pick Crawford and Gallon late in the draft. When we get to FA, we get Bosh, and (hoping we dump Yi and Hump) get LBJ also. Cousins could play behind Lopez and share time with Gallon behind Bosh as well. I know this is a crazy scenario and probably a stretch… BUT could you imagine? And remember, anything is possible.

    Harris TWILL?
    Lee Crawford
    LBJ TWILL
    Bosh Gallon
    Lopez Cousins
