Jones Confirms Move to New Jersey as one of Johnson's Assistants
A second spot on the Nets' bench has been filled. Marc Spears first reported, and Dallas Basketball's Mike Fisher has confirmed that Popeye Jones, Avery Johnson's big man coach in Dallas, is coming to New Jersey as an assistant. Jones was one of the NBA's fiercest rebounders during an 11-year NBA career. He's spent the last four years working in Dallas.
Other candidates for bench jobs include former Raptors' head coach Sam Mitchell, Blazer assistant Joe Prunty, and former Piston Darvin Ham. The Nets have yet to say how many assistants Johnson will be permitted to hire. Last year, the Nets had the fewest number of assistant coaches...and at the lowest salaries.
Johnson has said he wants to announce his staff early next month. When Al Iannazzone asked him last week if Mitchell and Prunty would be on his staff, Johnson replied, "one is" a good name.

Nice to see Avery get some real assistant coaches...
Hopefully, he can get the league norm or more.
Popoye Jones' DWI
Isn’t he the same guy who was arrested for drunk driving when he was in Dallas? He better not take TWILL out to the City.
And so said the old man!
I hope....
that he brings alot of Spinach for Lopez…….
I would hold off on hiring a head assistant (Sam Mitchell) if possible for a few more weeks.
It will be more important to Proky to make a try for LeBron.
Giving LeBron some say in Nets head assistant could help to recruit him.
Having the coaching staff already in place could be seen as disrespect for LeBron.
The top assistant could interact with LeBron more than head coach.
If it helps land LeBron just wait a little longer.
Not sure if LeBron would like Sam Mitchell.
Mitchell should still be available by mid July if it doesn’t look like LeBron is coming.
Proky is willing to "bend" for LeBron
I’m just the messenger, don’t blame me.
Proky wants LeBron1
A say in assistant head coach is a Small concession.
What?
You’re “just the messenger”? From who?
What is this Proky is willing to “bend” for LeBron business? What’s with the quotation marks?
Dude, please, enough.
Do we all want LeBron to play for the Nets – sure. Does Proky? I have no doubt. Do any of us know what Proky or the Nets front office are really thinking, or what they’re going to do next? No, not definitively. Stop talking like you do.
Besides that, front offices the league over – even ours – would lose a tremendous amount of respect from their teams’ fans if they gave that much power to a player. Even the notion seems absurd to me, even if we are talking about potentially one of the greatest to have ever played the game.

LeBron doesn't have to pick the Assistant, just show him some respect.
LeBron might be Okay with Mitchell in the end, but better to get to ask him first.
Mitchell won COY
Why would Lebron have a problem with a COY as an assistant?
I’m sorry, but if Lebron isn’t impressed with what the Nets are putting together this off season then there’s no pleasing him.
LeBron is a PLAYER
Not a coach. Not a GM. Not a President.
A player.

While people in the media were saying Nets should wait until July to pick a coach, for LeBron's benefit, I was saying pick Avery regardless.
Avery will be a big recruitment tool to get LeBron. Much bigger than JayZ, because Avery has implied that he will make LeBron into a better jump shooter. Until then Jordan will alway be the better player according to Avery. LeBron will be impressed.
I wish someone had the video of Avery saying that, at the end of the Cavs series with Boston.
Mitchell, I understand, had a fight with Vince for not trying hard enough.
I could see where some superstars might not like him.
No that's not the video. That is the video we all know about, where he says Nets are best fit.
It was either a couple days before that one, I think.
He said that LeBron has to realize he isn’t in LeBron’s league until he develops a better jump shot.
That's because Vince wasn't trying hard
It was clear by the time Vince was traded to us that he quit on the Raptors. It was Mitchell’s job to get in his face about it.
Seeing that Lebron just quit on his team a few weeks ago...
….that might be a problem.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!
You got to hand it to Jerry, he is tapped in… Look, LBJ is eiher going to play for a team or he’s not. He’s either going to believe that a team has the pieces and committment to win, or he’s not. That is what it should come down to. If it has to be predicated on his wants and needs, he can go somewhere else… The last 7 championship teams since he entereted the league did not include him on the winning side of it. That is not to say, I don’t think he’s gonna win several before its said and done, but it has to be within a team concept and vision, period!!!
For once...
I agree with you on this. Although a hand picked bench coach might undermine Avery.
the last time we bent over for a player in terms of a coach...
…we got stuck with Lawrence Frank for 5 years, who Kidd promptly quit on.
I’m good with that folks. Each to his own, but the only thing a star player should want is solid talent around him. That’s fine. But picking coaches and all of this crap…he can go.

If Lebron demands that much say in a franchise
I hope he comes no where near us.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

with all due respect Jerry...
…Lebron’s opinion about anything we’re doing can go take a fat flying leap, face first off of a cliff. We’re not going to become lap dogs for that attention whoring primadonna.
He has his own eyes, if he doesn’t like that coaching staff or talent base, he can go to Chicago and fail miserably under Michael Jordan’s shadow, or NY where there is no core in place and it will just be him, Amare, and a bunch of d leaguers. We have better things to do than worrying about his opinion about how Avery wants to assemble his staff..
Lebron’s opinion is the reason why Anderson Varejao has job security until 2014. That’s all I need to know.

Clearly Thorn doesnt care who Lebron wants.
They are going to do what they have to.
If lebron doesnt want to come here because he didnt pick an assistant coach, Then I AM SORRY FOR POOR LEBRON.

Other SB Nation sites I post on, 3-5 rec’s turn the comment GREEN and gives it a thumbs up.
NI/ND, does this site operate like that?

Nice moves
Like the hires, but I think the Nets should also hire at least one highly-experienced assistant coach as well (no one in mind, but it would add a different perspective during huddles/practices/meetings/games).

I think that Roy Rogers should be a part of this coaching staff. He has a very good bond with Brook and has clearly been a big help in his development. If you bring aboard Popeye Jones, fine – having 2 dedicated big men coaches makes a lot of sense.
Chances are after the draft, the most important development for the Nets franchise will be Brook and Favors/Cousins. And there is a good shot that we draft another young big with either 27 or 31st as a backup PF/C. Plus we still have Yi on the roster – who could be valuable as a rotation player off the bench with our second unit.
Either way – having 2 bigs to coach interior d, rebounding, boxing out, foot work, post moves, etc would be valuable to the overall direction of this franchise.
Totally agree.
It’s funny … this post is about Popeye, not Lebron.
What do you guys think of Popeye as coach.
It could work brilliantly in theory
But I don’t think it would. Unless Rogers and Jones were both on EXACTLY the same page, then the conflicting coaching opinions/advice/views coming from those two would certainly have the potential to have a negative affect.

Past relationship
The past relationship between Popeye and Avery – and therefore Popeye’s intimate knowledge of Coach’s system – means that, I think, Roy would be kind of superfluous. That’s not to say though, that I think Roy is a bad coach. Far from it.
'The Crossover' - a Nets and Knicks podcast. http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=268817312
Our franchise is being built around a 21 year old center (Brook Lopez). He has said countless times how much he likes Roy Rogers and how much he has learned from him. And I dont think anyone can deny the progress in his development. He could be in this years draft – instead he is on the verge of being a 20-10 guy in the NBA.
So to say it could be a duplication or superfluous, I don’t agree. Both Jones and Rogers would bring different skill sets to the table – which could be extremely valuable in grooming our young bigs.
Can think of a lot worse directions the Nets could go in this respect.
who cares where Lebron goes the draft is in 2 days
On topic it sounds like Avery wants him helping him out it said Popeye was a player development coach. I wonder who Avery will hire to do that?
I like what Avery's building here
I can see Jones will have immediate impact on Lopez and Yi. As well as Favors or Cousins (and possibly Gallon) who ever we draft. The possibly of Mitchell means a lot of good thing too.
