Nets Work Out Qyntel Woods, "Could" Buy Second Round Pick

It's a busy time for Avery Johnson.  He's been watching draft prospects work out, studying film of others late into the night and talking to potential assistant coaches.

Friday, there was a bit of a break, as he and his wife, Cassandra, looked at a condo...but before he did, he looked at a prospect well beyond draft age.  Qyntel Woods, the 6'9" swingman who played for the Blazers, Heat and Knicks before heading to Europe, was in for a workout.  Johnson says he liked what he saw, but wouldn't say if Woods will be joining the Nets.  Woods was charged in a bar fight two weeks ago in Poland.

Johnson has some roster spots to fill.  Only five players have unencumbered contracts next season: Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian, Brook Lopez, Courtney Lee and Terrence Williams. Keyon Dooling is likely gone and there's no word yet on whether options on Kris Humphries (player) and Chris Douglas-Roberts (team) will be picked up.

Al Iannazzone reports that in addition to the Nets' three picks at #3, #27 and #31, two sources are telling him the Nets could buy an additional second rounder.  A number of teams have multiple second round picks.

"Russian Rubio" - Alexey Shved

under contract to CSKA Moscow through 2013. 6’7" point guard.

by Net Income on Jun 18, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

this was my thoughts on this news:

use an extra 2nd rder to draft a euro stud, and stash him away.

God, it feels good to root for a team that has some purpose and direction

"No one stands on the top of the world. Not you, not me, not even gods. But the unbearable vacancy of the throne in the sky is over. From now on...I will be sitting on it."

by MrDollarBills on Jun 18, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Raises questions

1. Would the Nets be willing to draft Shved, retain his draft rights until his contract expires in Russia, then bring him over? If so, that would result in no upfront cost right now, correct? i.e. lead to no effect on current cap space

2. Instead, could Prokhorov buy out Shved’s contract for next season, using his leverage within CSKA?

3. How old is Shved? Could he be stashed for three years? That’s a long time.

I’m trying to figure out what the downside is.

by BigTom on Jun 18, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Shved isn't much of a player.

Thats the only downside really. Its no guarantee that the Nets would even pick him if they do get an extra pick. I dont expect them to get a quality player, especially with Thorn at the helm, but its worth a shot, there is no down side.

Yeah, Randle

2nd best PG in the draft according to DraftExpress.

Unfortunately, searching Youtube for videos of Alexey Shved...

you find more videos of guys named Alex getting their heads shaved than actual basketball footage.

Shved? Really?

I coulda swore it was Shved. I could be wrong. Maybe it is Shved.

at power

Why? Because they sign a guy who played in Poland last year? Like Iannazzone said, this doesn’t mean we’ll sign him in the first place, and if we do it’s bc we’d need to fill out those last roster spots.

by Andres B on Jun 19, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd rather we buy a 1st rounder instead

teams are still losing money right? Someone’s bound to sell a late one

by muwu on Jun 18, 2010 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

here's the issue

if you buy a first rounder, his salary automatically counts against the cap. If you buy a second rounder, the player has no guarantee…and the Nets will wait til the free agent circus has left town before signing him…and #31.

by Net Income on Jun 18, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed thats the best move

I dont think theres that much talent difference at the end of the draft, we will probably get somebody we kept our eye on.

by Atronic on Jun 18, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

somebody has to be willing to sell a first rounder for that to happen

and considering Torontos apparently been trying to buy one that doesn’t seem very likely.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

I could see Brook Lopez rooming with him on a road trip...

And Brook not sleeping a wink, with eyes wide peeking out from under the covers all night.

say they sign Woods

They could trade Humps straight up for AK47 to start.
They would have 3 tough players all with different skillsets, 2 triple double threats.

Andrei’s a problem on defense rebounding blocking shots and defending well with a 6’10 frame. We know TWill’s a good distributor if he adds a consistent shot look out.

Qyntel Woods was impressive his last year in the league. I don’t know how his play was last year overseas but Avery was impressed. He’ll be hungry back in the league, and best of all he’d come cheap.

Depending on matchups Andrei could play some 4 and TWill some point guard so there’s room for QWoods.

Lakers (43, 58)
Knicks (38,39)

Pacers (40,57)
Thunder (32,51)

And the autocomplete adds “dog fighting.” I guess if he were any good, we’d all know this story already, like with Michael Vick.

Its getting scary

There are a few developments that scared me today…

Seems as if the 76ers are drafting Turner according to the website gaff at least… Lebron is apparently wanting to go to the Knicks, and Amare is probably going to wind up with the Heat.

I see no option but to trade the #3 and actually get something out of it.

by Tim823 on Jun 18, 2010 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

What on earth makes you think LeBron wants to go the the Knicks?

by J-Kay on Jun 18, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Foolishness

Of course the New York media is going to say LeBron is coming to them. They still think the NBA is Knicks-centric. They still think everybody outside the NYC beltway has that mid-90s view of the Knicks. Meanwhile, back in reality, they’ve been irrelevant for a while.

by BigTom on Jun 18, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Its just Steven A. exagurating his story

I actually think Steven A. has some quality sources from time to time but what his sources told him was that Lebrons team are asking questions about Walsh and DAntoni. I dont know how that translates to Lebron prefers the Knicks. I’m sure in due time they will be making the same inquiries about Chicago, Heat, Nets and so on. They should be asking questions.

by demens on Jun 18, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

If Lebron goes to the Knicks

Its not about the management or winning its just about him, he will get what he deserves.

by Atronic on Jun 18, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he wont win anything, but the hype will put a permanet shadow over the Nets

You dont want Lebron on the Knicks if you’re a Nets fan. Even if you hate Lebron and hope he never wins anything, you still dont want him on NYK.

by demens on Jun 18, 2010 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I want him on NYK

us beating them 4 times a year would shift a lot of hype over to us. LBJ’s a hype machine now but as he gets older if he doesn’t win anything the hype’s going to shift to younger stars.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

by Gina on Jun 18, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I agree

If we don’t get Lebron I hope he goes the Knicks. It’s about being champs and I believe we will and they won’t even with him. He goes to the Knicks and it will ruin his career, Patrick got away without winning a title but Lebron would not.

by msm2 on Jun 19, 2010 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The only reason the Knicks are rising (for LeBron) is that the Bulls are dropping.

According to Stephen A., LeBron is having 2nd thoughts (just as I predicted) about playing in Jordan’s shadow.

If Nets could trade for Evan Turner, LeBron would make NJ his #1 choice.

by jerry25 on Jun 18, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

YOU CRACK ME UP...

Funny, how you seem to be the only one that predicts things, as if no one would have ventured to guess that LBJ going to Chicago might be too much to live up to, especially if he fails, and the liklihood of never matching Michael’s 6 rings is pretty strong…

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that arguement doesn't hold much weight

For the player Lebron is trying to be, he will be in Jordans shadow no matter what team he plays for, it doesn’t matter if its Chicago. He will have pressure on him to win multiple championships anywhere he goes.

by demens on Jun 18, 2010 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I AGREE

but also disagree, I think Chicago will be more to live up to, because of Jordan…

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's pressure so much as

if he comes here we’ll love him for ever. If he goes somewhere like Chicago he’ll never be their number 1.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

by Gina on Jun 18, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

We'll love him until the next guy comes along

Look at Kobe. People are calling him the greatest Laker now and he was being compared to Jordan pretty much most of his career. Whatever is current is relevant. If Lebron goes to Chicago and wins 3 or 4 rings they will love him just as much as MJ.

I’m not saying MJs shadow is a non factor completely, but this is basically the only thing people use as a reason to back their argument of Lebron not going to the Bulls. I dont think its something that will be a deciding factor for him.

by demens on Jun 18, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

It might not be....

but, I think you’ll agree we need as many “cons” against the other teams contending for his services as possible… :-)

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, Nets would have better team for LeBron if we got Turner and a PF from free agency.

Plus Proky and Brooklyn and JayZ and LeBron’s own team.

Nets have lots of advantages over Chicago, but unless Nets get their franchise player in Turner, the media will never even come close to figuring that out (only Avery would figure it out because he has been following the Nets for quite some time).

The stupid media like to convince themselves that the word Newark is Evil and thus no point to consider LeBron.

by jerry25 on Jun 18, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The only thing

I would dispute is that Turner would be the francise player… we’re trying to get our franchise player in LBJ, only room for one of those, but Turner would be a very nice additional piece to present LBJ with come July 1st.

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

ehhhh

Jordan had pippen

Shaq had Kobe

Wade had Shaq

Kobe had Pau

Nets, LeBron have Turner, Lopez, Amar’e…. <3

by Alex F on Jun 18, 2010 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough...

But the only rookie in the long time to step into that role was LBJ, and LBJ Turner is not… Pippen, Kobe, Wade, Pau were not considered franchise players, they evolved into them… Let’s not jump the gun on Turner, is all I’m sayin…. Not that we’re gonna get him anyway… So the whole point it moot!

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Nicest thing NJNETS13 ever said about me.

And you are right that LBJ would become the new franchise player of course, (Turner with be the reserve franchise player, with Harris, David Lee and Brook right behind.)

Hell, it would be the best team in NBA, and getting Turner next week is holding it hope.

They should bring him back at $1.5M per or so tho after spending the big bucks on our primary targets in the free agent market. We’ll need guys like him to fill out the roster.

by Andres B on Jun 19, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I am completely indifferent about this. The chance of getting a rotation-quality player in the middle of the second round is essentially zero. Now, if they could purchase a pick in the #31-#35 range, that may be a different story. There may be a couple decent players available there, and I wouldn’t mind the Nets essentially doubling their odds.

by Dumpy on Jun 18, 2010 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

There are actually 5-10 players each year, the chances being closer to 20% then zero

People have gotten so used to Thorn getting zero out of the 2nd round, they think its rare, well its not THAT rare. This is also the reason Nets fans are obsessed with CDR since he is the only 2nd rounder Thorn drafted that actually made some sort of a contribution.

Cousins and Favors went head-to-head in Philly today. Once again, Cousins looked great. But you expect that. Cousins more polished rt now. </blockquote

The question with Favors will be … what’s he gonna look like in 3 years? Okafor looked better than D. Howard in Year One too …

by rjsb12 on Jun 18, 2010 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

I still think it is Cousins (not Favors) who Phila. wants, but they want to get something back before they give up Turner.

We need a whole topic on dissecting the Phila. events today.

What are Nets willing to give up for #2 pick and Turner? Certainly $3 million from Proky.

The Poker game may begin this weekend between Thorn and Stefanski.

by jerry25 on Jun 18, 2010 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

They would probably have to give up CLee and possibly a protected 1st rounder… That just might be too much, but who knows… Philly may actually love Turner @ the 2, and are not going to move the pick, UNLESS, someone is willing to take Brand’s contract…puke…!!

I mean they did take him out on the town, and Collins said some pretty great things about him after yesterday’s workout…

Monday is a HUGE day!!!

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Turner would be worth it

I would be happy with Cousins or Favors, but our team needs a leader and Turner is a leader. He would be worth giving up Lee OR both our later picks OR the Golden State pick for. Make Stefanski an offer he can’t refuse!

Buying a second rounder is a great idea depending.g upon where it is. In the 30’s you could Target Jerome Jordan as a backup center,.lance stephenson as a kid with upside potential and huge Brooklyn marketing potential, randle, tiny gallon or ebanks. A later pick I suspect the target is Da’Sean Butler…first round talent but had that horrible knee injury in final four. I would be a huge fan of taking Butler. Also this enables the Nets to add to roster with minimum salary cap implications. Much cheaper than filling end of bench with veteran minimum types.

by Ryan243 on Jun 18, 2010 7:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Get West Virginia's Da'Sean Butler (from Newark, NJ)

Buy a second round pick and take WV’s Da’Sean Butler, from Newark. Butler has talent and the only question is his knee injury. However, it’s a no-brainer for the second round.

Go for Brian Zoubek!

The Duke center is projected by all of ESPN’s experts to go in the middle of the 2nd round and be a decent rotation player in the NBA. He won’t go higher, because his ceiling isn’t that high, but pretty much every scout says he’s going to be a decent 10-15 minutes a night back up center who plays good D. Jason Collins type.
