Agent: Nets Have "Genuine Interest" in Favors

Wallace Prather is Derrick Favors' agent.  He tells Adam Zagoria of SNY that while the Sixers "clearly have interest" in his client, the Nets have "genuine interest."  What's the diff?  Could just be the time of the year.

"I think there's genuine interest," Prather said when asked about the Nets and Favors, the 6'10" PF.

"I can't say for sure they will pick him. I think they have a need at the four position, the three and four. In this draft they can go with either forward position. I do know coming directly from them they are interested in the four position."

The one unknown is whether the Sixers' interest in Favors is really all that clear.  They had Evan Turner in for a workout Thursday, took him to dinner and showed up him the City of Brotherly Love.  They even had a page prepared and published on their website listing him as their pick. Doug Collins, who reportedly like Favors better, praised Turner as a "great competitor".  Never mind the logjam that could develop with Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young and Andres Nocioni

Dobermite's TOP 4

1. John Wall

Obviously

=

2. Wes Johnson

Better athlete and shooter than Turner

=

3. Evan Turner

Terrific “basketball player”

=

4. DeMarcus Cousins

All-Star ability, but questionable work ethic and character

can we get your in detail, scouting reports on each?

Don't really have time for scouting reports

But I’ll give you a quick comparision, dollar bill

Wes Johnson = Penny Hardaway/Scottie Pippen

Evan Turner = Grant Hill

DeMarcus Cousins = Rasheed Wallace

by Dobermite on Jun 18, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Penny Hardaway/Scottie Pippen

Wes Johnson? Look I am a cuse fan and like Wes, but he is not a playmaker, hes a scorer. Nice spot up J, great in transition, will be a good defensive SF, not strong in creating off the dribble and definitely does not have either Pennys or Scotties Playmaking abilities.

by O Dog on Jun 18, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

If you're a Cuse fan, dog

Then you know Wes played the 4 by necessity, therefore ball handling was not a requirement in his role and that scheme.

Wes is a terrific athlete who played PG in H.S. and IMO a much better ball handler than his scouting report might suggest.

I think he can break you down off the dribble or shoot over the top, pick your poison, and he’s a rare athlete who plays (WAY) above the rim, but can also knock down the short Jumper, the mid range Jumper or the 3

Most college kids who excell at one rarely work on the other, thus the other skills must be learned in the pros … usually the superior athlete (like Wes) who must learn to shoot with greater efficiancy.

With Wes you get the rare athlete who does BOTH … RIGHT NOW

That’s why I compared him to Hardaway and Pippen

Plays way above the rim like Penny, and knocks down shots like Pippen

by Dobermite on Jun 18, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Hes not a playmaker, though

He doesnt create for other, for himself, you cant compare to a point forward, hes not a point forward, hes a scoring SF.

by O Dog on Jun 18, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Demarcus Cousins does not have the range or athleticism that a young rasheed had

Wes Johnson does not have the playmaking skills of penny or pippen nor the ball handling, Evan Turner I can see with Grant Hill but again Grant was like a dear and athletic enough to dunk on bigs. I see Wes johnson more as an Jefferson type by the way, the problem with a lot of people comparing others to Cousins is they forget the athleticism that guys like Shaq, Alonzo morning, Barkley, or even Rasheed played with. But I will say if Wes Johnson cleans up his ball handling skills he can be a problem, just wished he was 21 at least.

by Atronic on Jun 18, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Sheed had ups in his day...

….I remember when he dunked on Shaq, I think he’s only the 2nd person in the NBA to do that other than…you know who….

If Wes Johnson was comparable to Penny Hardaway...

….he’d be the highest rated prospect in this draft.

I have a hard time believing that someone who allegedly cannot create his own shot effectively is comparable to Penny Hardaway.

In fact....

…Turner reminds me of a less athletic hybrid of Hardaway/Hill.

Wes might be a better shooter and athlete than turner

but he doesn’t have the ball handling, offensive creativity, playmaking, and basketball IQ of Turner. Makes a big difference

by muwu on Jun 18, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Like Chris Dortch says

Wes is an athletic 3 who can shoot, that’s a rare comodity. I understand those who think he’s not worth the 3rd pick, but he’s gonna be a heck of player.

I agree

if we trade down I think he’ll be a great consolation prize. But I’d rather take our chances with Turner/Favors/Cousins.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

So right now I think it’s basically down between Evan Turner and Derrick Favors. One of these guys we might get and you can’t go wrong with either of them. Unless the Nets like what they see in Demarcus Cousins in the workout on monday. But right now I think it’s either Turner or Favors. It all depends on what Philly does.

Philly already messed up with Turner...

….by giving him a tour of the city of brotherly love. Those women are so ugly in that city, you can literally begin to feel your eyes when they start to burn upon getting off of I 95. I would have refused the tour

I’m stunned that the Eagles even have cheerleaders. They must import them.

nets r too sold on favors

the nets are alredy too sold on favors. but if turner falls to the nets and philly takes favors its a huge curveball but 4 the better in a way. it would b easier to get a pf in free agency than a sg or a sf.

No, they aren't

Dave D said it.

He’s the favorite at this point, but Cousins will take that place as early as Monday, IMO.

Chad Ford after their workout in Philly:

Cousins and Favors went head-to-head in Philly today. Once again, Cousins looked great. But you expect that. Cousins more polished rt now.

There’s going to be a lot of pressure on Favors on the 21st in NJ. He’s looked pretty raw in last 3 workouts.

The Sixers also have websites for Cousins, Wall, Johnson, and Favors. They’re also currently blacked out.

When ND initially posted that link, the Favors one didn’t exist. Although I did just check something just to be safe and there is not a website for the Sixers drafting Banana so it’s not like you could just put in anything to get that black out. obviously it went black because it going live was a mistake by someone in the first place

And according to fanhouse, the favors and cousins ones only appeared after the turner one was found out. When they first tested to see if there was a favors or cousins site, there was none, so those black pages for favors and cousins were newly made. Damage control

by Gina on Jun 18, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Favors' agent scares me..

Why does he keep saying that Favors would fill in for Yi very nicely?

Doesn he know that Nets fans think Yi is easily the worst starting forward in the NBA and that Nets fans expect Favors to be HUGELY better than Yi in his first year, or else he would be considered a Bust.

It was already said that Favors would be coming off the bench for 1 1/2 years. That means he is suggesting that Yi would be a starter.

Fact is that if Nets took his client, then Nets would have to get a REAL PF via the draft – likely DLee or Scola.

by jerry25 on Jun 18, 2010 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

Come on Guys...

he’s probably being respectful to players on a team that may draft his client… Why does everyone read into everything…?

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Logic says that if Phila just traded a Center (Dalembert) they would be looking to draft a Center (Cousins), who can also play some PF and shoots real well.

The only reason people are mentioning Favors going to Phila, is because of Chris and Doug Collins.

Cousins makes the most sense, as well as to Phila. fans.

If we get Turner, that gives us a better chance at LBJ

Turner is ready with no question marks unlike Favors (raw) or Cousins (attitude/weight). LBJ could easily play the 3 with Turner the 2 and perhaps we could convince one of the big 2 PF (Amare/Bosh) to come play with LBJ.

Collins is no fool...

…..allegedly. But the point is, any GM with common sense knows that if your frontcourt is crap you will be destroyed in the NBA. The two best teams in the league this year had brutal frontcourts.

I’m begging him to go big. It doesn’t matter to us either way because we have a need for a stud perimeter scorer as well as a PF that can defend and block shots.

I have no doubt after carefully listening to Doug, they he is waiting to hear offers for #2 pick, as I suggested before.
Nets must part with draft picks if they are bidding with Minny for #2 pick.

Nets have advantage because with #3 pick Collins can guarantee getting his choice for a Big.

No need to trade up

No way we should trade up, unless we are giving up some salary in the trade and frees up more $ for FA. We will have our choice of Turner/Favors/Johnson/Cousins. Very important draft, if we go PF we can concentrate on 2/3 in FA, if we get Turner we can concentrate on 3/4. Great position to be in…without giving up players.

by O Dog on Jun 18, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

That would only be true if Thorn/Avery felt that Turner/Favors were equal.

Time for NetsDaily / NI to post a separate topic for us to dissect the Collins/Favors/Cousins to Philadelphia topic.

It is also time to discuss what Nets would be willing to give up.

It was TOTALLY OBVIOUS to me that was what Collins was hinting at.
Come on, he was talking about the example of having to trade down to go from #9 to #5 to get Scottie Pippen?
However, Phila. controls the board at #2, so they can only be talking about trading up.

Very Very Obvious.

by jerry25 on Jun 18, 2010 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

We only trade up

if we dont have to give up any assets and it frees up cap space. Other than that I see no reason to deal unless we think Turner is so much better than everyone else in this draft…..I also dont see what we can give Philly that they already dont have if they are willing to trade down (I am not trading T Will…..)

by O Dog on Jun 18, 2010 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

Why would philly take that future protected pick...

if Minny was willing to trade this years 4 and 16…in a very strong draft? We should not get in a bidding war for #2 pick. We are going to get one heckuva player at 3.

i don't see how turner is that different in talent

I just don’t see any way Turner is more valuable than Johnon/Favors/Cousins + Lee and multiple picks. I get that he’s #2 in essentially a 2 person draft but I think people are using that to WAY overrate him. it’s not like he’s #2 like Durant was #2. He’s a very good prospect, but not a franchise changing one. He’s got plenty of flaws and isn’t really much more of a sure thing to be a star than Favors/Cousins.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

Because we can offer the #3 pick, which would guarantee Phila. gets their choice of Cousins or Favors

That is most important if they have a preference.

The Warriors pick isn’t roughly the same value as the #16 pick, maybe better (don’t know yet).
Nets have other picks to offer.

by jerry25 on Jun 18, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if Philly takes Turner

We will finish ahead of them after drafting Favors and signing big time FA. They have no bigs if they draft Turner. Lopez/Favors will eat them alive in frontcourt

by O Dog on Jun 18, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

We would still have to take Scola or DLee since Favors wouldn't be a starter as has been reported.

If we take Turner, then we could take a minimum of DLee and have the Franchise player in Turner in addition.

The problem is that there is no player other than DWade, available in free agency to compare with Turner. We aren’t spending max money on Joe Johnson.

RGay or LeBron would love to come the Nets team that would feature an All Star Level player at every position.

We would become an Elite team with LeBron.

by jerry25 on Jun 18, 2010 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets please not spend any money on David Lee

Im not spending 10M per year on a limited offensive player who doesnt play a lick of defense. He hustles and competes but does not complement Lopez in any way shape or form. Scola is going to be overpaid, let someone else pay him.

by O Dog on Jun 18, 2010 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

We can discuss that later, but if Nets take Favors, it would probably be 10 million on either Lee or Scola.

At least if Nets took Turner, they could go for Boozer/Bosh/Amare route, although I have issues with all three (not to mention there wouldn’t be enough cap space to get LeBron (who Proky wants).

NO IT WON'T

they are not going to draft favors and then pay another PF for 5 years, its not going to happen… If they don’t think he can start this year, I have news for you, they are going to let Yi and Hump play out their final year, and have Favors work himself in… you keep saying this, because yo think som how that the basketball Gods will have the NETS draft Cousins… Its silly, they will NOT sign a major FA PF if they draft Favors, period!!!

If they think Cousins can truly play the 4 after Monday, maybe they go that way, but they are not going to do both, makes NO SENSE..!!!

by NJNETS13 on Jun 18, 2010 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

If we're interesting in attracting Lebron we should draft Johnson

since he’s the spot up shooter we’d need. It makes no sense to correlate drafting Turner with attracting Lebron. Turner is going to need to essentially fill the same role in an offense Lebron would to be effective, basically an over sized point guard.

I thought you said that Johnson can't handle the ball? Where would he play? SF next to LeBron?

LeBron would love to have Turner/Harris feeding him the ball.

Turner would get 10 assists per game with Lopez/LeBron/DLee to pass to.

or Lebron would just play sg

And Turner would play on the perimeter.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

I can see LBJ/Turner coexisting

We will still need another shooter to help spread the floor but I can definitely see the 2 co existing. They would feed off each other.

Lebron has needed to play alongside another solid perimeter player anyway

if Lebron could turn Mo Williams into an allstar....

I can only imagine how good Turner or Favors would be playing with him. And Lopez would be a perennial All star as Coach AJ said (he may be one even w/o Lebron, but imagine how good he would be with him….)

Ed Stefanski was lying when about not needing a BIG.

http://www.nba.com/sixers/video/2010/06/18/100618Favorsmov-1351343/index.html

Ed also revealed that Phila. could use a $3 million give from Proky, in return for the #2 pick.

We need NI/NetsDaily to start a new thread on the Phila. developments.

I’ll bet Thorn will be on the phone with Ed this weekend.

The POKER game is about to begin.

ED WANTS TURNER

how do you not see that from listening to this interview… When a reporter asked him if yesterday’s trade changes how he looks at the draft… watch how quickly he turns and asnwers that question, and his response was “I WOULD NOT SAY THAT” and he said it with conviction… I don’t think he wants to trade this thing…

Al Iannazzone

See Jerry25, Al just reported exactly what I said above… He got the same impression that I had when I watched the video… its funny how you only see things your way… Let’s all start being more logical on this board.

If cousins can prove that he can play the 4 on Monday, and I mean REALLY prove it, which is highly doubtful in one workout, then and only then will he be in real contention for the 3rd pick, otherwise, Favors is a NO brainer…

It's no Poker, it's a chess game

Philly’s cards/pieces are all open.
They have the horse and bishop open and up for grabs.
It’s up to the Nets which direction they want to go.

I am in love with Favors right now!

http://www.nba.com/sixers/video/2010/06/17/100617turnermov-1350603/index.html

Today a Philly reporter asked for Favors’ reaction to Minny GM Kahn’s remark that Favors is out of shape, and Favors said it was “constructive criticism” and that he’s “not in game shape,” but in good enough shape “to push through a workout.”

Beautiful. Kahn tried to knock him, and Derrick brushed it off as constructive criticism. Perfect response. This kid is golden!

Derrick Favors was born in 1991, can he still grow up?

I hope he will be 7-0 1 or 2 years later, can that be true?

by Jarkid Shen on Jun 18, 2010 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

yeah males don't stop growing until their early 20s

Dwight Howard measured in at around the same height and has grown since.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

Fundamentally Strong Basketball Players

As I have been playing around in NBA2K10 association mode, I realized one key thing: If the Nets were able to put together a team of solid, fundamentally strong players with high bball IQ, then they’ll win. It starts with Devin. Avery’s gonna have him playing like Rondo except he’ll make shots and layups. Then this is where the draft is key because E. Turner is ready NOW to play and is very fundamentally strong. Next, Lopez is great as we know. Amar’e is definitely one of the best PF in the league with Bosh. Amar’e claims he wants to be here. So if we could just add either LeBron or another bball IQ, fundamentals guy, this team will be GREAT.

Bonus: CDR’s tweets are rediculous. He needs to be shipped elsewhere immediately. I wonder if Philly is interested in a “proven NBA scorer”?

by Alex F on Jun 19, 2010 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

so you want fundamentally strong basketball players

but Scola and Haslem are scrubs? They’re like the definition of fundamentally sound players.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

ha

see my post on the other board. I’m just saying they’re not the primary targets. I don’t wanna settle for these S to the Crubs until we are forced to. Or unless they wanna take a LOT less $ and come off the bench.
