Prokhorov, On His Way, Promises Championship in Five Years

Money Russia

Sometime Monday night, a Gulfstream V carrying the new owner of the New Jersey Nets touched down in New York. Mikhail Prokhorov will get some rest before embarking on a whirlwind of appearances, interviews, a press conference and no doubt some very pricey meals. There'll also be a round of hand shaking with Nets' employees.

But before leaving Moscow, Prokhorov recorded a video message to Nets fans in which he promised to build the team quickly, provide the front office with all the resources it needs and be personally involved in the recruiting of free agents.

Here are some quotes from the two-minute long message, shot in his sister's kitchen:

"If everything goes as planned, I expect to be in the playoffs next season...and championship in one year minimum and maximum in five years...

"The excitement is with the Nets.  We will have a desire to win that is unmatched anywhere in the league.  This will be a first class organization with all the support it needs...

"This will be the first truly global team in the NBA with exceptional international exposure no other team can reach, and there will be fans of the Nets from New Jersey to Brooklyn to Moscow...

“I can convince the very best of the best that the Nets are the place they want to be.”

The Russian billionaire will be at the NBA Draft Lottery in Secaucus Tuesday night, when he'll make some limited remarks. Then, Wednesday, he'll hold an introductory press conference in midtown Manhattan before going head-to-head with WFAN's Mike Francesa at 2 p.m.  Oh yeah, Wednesday night, you might find him getting some cheers at a nearby Stadium. Did someone say new Steinbrenner?

You are going to be in for a disappointment as Kiki won't be fired.

But his contract won’t be renewed. And I don’t think we will know for sure for a while, because there may not be a new GM named during the next month.

Maybe they will wait until after a coach is finalized. For example if Coach K were to accept, he might want to be GM also.

When Kiki first came to the Nets, he was Rod’s Assistant for a while. Maybe they will do the same, with Thorn doubling as GM in the interim until he can test out a couple of people.

    Even worse than Steinbrenner

According to Francesa today, Prokorov had his executive lady “pre-interview” him before the appearance with him on WFAN. Give us a break, talk about being just a tad too self-important. This promises to be sickening.

    Get real

I work in PR and have dealt with CEO’s of gigantic billion dollar companies. Prep-interviews are common – it’s part of what the media deal with in order to get access to huge names.

I guarantee your favorite athlete has done an interview in which he had a list of questions that could not be asked.

Yes because somone worth in excess of 17 billion doesn’t have the right to be self improtant. The guys one of the richest men in the world if he doesn’t have the right to be self improtant who does? On the other hand its common for interviews of nearly everyone of significance to be prepped in advance, if you think otherwise naive much. iIs hardly suprising that somone who english is not their first language and is having their first official interview as owner would like to practice.

    Don't bring up Steinbrenner

Although it’s true that George Steinbrenner did make the Yankees a championship team again, he did take away all the life for going to Yankees game. It was found that neither the past Yankee Stadium or even the current one has such a low part with quality. They make it as if we were all better just staying at home and watching their game. I am surprised for such a rich owner, he can’t make a stadium life-like. Even the old Shea Stadium had more life than the new Yankee Stadium, and I am not just saying that because I like the Mets over the Yankees. I have been the Yankee Stadium last season, and it didn’t feel that they do anything there that’s worth going except for just showing something on the scoreboard whereas the Mets have the t-shirt toss, pizza pass, a special flower cake for couples, a Deal or No Deal paradoy, a gift card for a sponsored steakhouse, Mr. Met, and even a giant apple that pops up whenever they hit a homerun, plus a lucky fan gets a ball with that player’s autograph the next inning. One other thing, if Steinbrenner is so rich, why couldn’t he have just paid for the new stadium with his own money rather than using subsidized bonds? It’s not like he would have lost a lot from that, but when you have a friends in high places, there is no need to be worried about that. This is the same thing for the other recently built stadiums such as Citifield, where the Mets now play as well as those that aren’t built right now such as the Barclays Center. Overall, no more corporate welfare.

He had mentioned to the Indypendent, a minor newspaper stationed in NYC, that he will still be in the fight, but just not on the front lines. He will probably still be writing for the Huffington Post as he has been doing lately. He even commented on the paper I mentioned that the opposition is not a fringe group, they are actually most of the people living in brownstone Brooklyn. The same thing with the claim about the pro-Towers supporters on wanting the Twin Towers rebuilt and that they are not a fringe group especially when a number of them including myself have been to numerous hearings and wrote to the media. Of course I am still active on that especially since I got a letter printed on the NY Post last week criticizing Chris Ward’s claim on the momentum over at the WTC site along with ML Donovan, who is the co-founder of the Twin Towers Alliance. Getting back to the AY, there was a court hearing today in lower Manhattan known as Peter WIlliams vs NYS Urban Developement Corp that can bring them back into the playing field. Finally, please read the letters before making any further judgement, and don’t act like you read, because I could quiz you on it.

Hey, what if Minny gets the #1 and we get #2?

Do any of you think they’ll draft Wall, then swap us Wall for Turner? Sort of like what happened with Webber and Penny Hardaway in ‘93. We need a contingency plan in case the #1 falls into another team’s hands. IMO, we need the #1 pick, one way or another.

    How does that help us?

He’s not what we want. Maybe if we got him and either Al Jefferson or Kevin Love back, then it might help us fill in a couple of areas (starting PF and backup PG).

by Morph on May 17, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think what Morph is saying is..

If MN gets #1, they would be happy with Turner, but if Nets were willing to give MN something they might be willing to trade Wall to Nets in return for #2 pick and something else.

However, if Nets get #2 (21.5% not 19% chance), then I’m sure Thorn would love to have Turner and would be relieved he wouldn’t have to deal with the DHarris situation.

If MN took Wall, then he might trade the rights to Rubio to a team like the Knicks, who might find another 1st round pick to donate.

    Mets are more fan friendly

I doubt it has anything to do with trying to win over fans. It probably has more do with how interactive the Mets like to be at home games. Why should attedning a game just be where fans can only watch as if they could have saved the money by just staying at home and seeing it on TV for free? This is why the Mets surpass the Yankees in terms of quality by actually make it worth comming there, plus they also of a fan zone for kids whereas the Yankees are just too corporate in the end. As for saying if I am business man, if I can afford it, I will pay for it myself. BTW, I do follow other news stories besides this, so I do know about the real world besides the issues with the Nets.

To be sure to make playoffs next year, means a minimum of 1 very good free agent.

He also said there would be a championship in 1-5 (I guess LeBron+Turner+ another FA would be the only chance to compete by next year).

So anyone thinking he might bypass free agency, if the players aren’t worth the price, have just received evidence that won’t be the case.

by jerry25 on May 17, 2010 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Why most you continually doubt Wall?

Wall could be ROY of the year. IF the Nets get Wall and good FA pickup like DLee, they could make the playoffs next year.

by jcapriolo on May 17, 2010 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

LeBron and Turner is an oxymoron

by Wall or Bust on May 18, 2010 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

only to “Wall or Bust” is Turner and LeBron not compatible.

Wall ended up choosing an Agent from a different company than LeBron, so they are not as close as people thought.
Turner and LeBron on the same team would be unstoppable and then add on BLopez, Harris and DLee.
It would be an elite team immediately and LeBron could recognize that.

Turner is the most NBA ready top draft pick. Even more ready than was Durant. Most Wall supporters would agree.
Once again, the 2nd advantage is that Harris + Turner works best in the backcourt – giving the Nets a big backcourt that would give opponents fits.

Obviously Turner + Wall would be the best backcourt, but there is a 53.5% chance Nets get neither.

by jerry25 on May 18, 2010 8:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Turner but hate Harris (thinks he’s much better than he is, bad defense, poor shooting, bad distributor, injury prone, etc.). Unless we had a Rose or Rondo, it’s Wall or Bust. Harris could only be part of a dynasty where he’s the 4th or 5th best starter, and that’s still pretty contentious. I know people will point at numerous reasons why his play slipped last year, but the bottom line is that his style of play just doesn’t fit on a championship team.

On another note, we shouldn’t discount the importance of off-the-court ties — that’s why Wall and Calipari are so important. The only way Cal would jump to the NBA would be to go to the Nets, and only if they draft Wall. With Wall and Cal in hand, we become HEAVY front-runners for LeBron.

by Wall or Bust on May 18, 2010 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Harris would definitely need a demanding coach. Harris understood that Nets needed to have worst record this past year. He had free reign to do as he wished, and he also had injuries.

The Harris I would expect next year, with a tough coach like AJ, would be much better. He knows he has to work on outside shooting to survive.

Cal is going to resign with KY in a few days. He won’t be an option.

by jerry25 on May 18, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m pretty sure Cal would leave Kentucky only for the Nets, but only if we got Wall.

by Wall or Bust on May 18, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Harris will never be the #1 guy

But his is a proven championship quality team PG. Was a critical piece in Dallas’s run to the championship. Followed that by leading Dallas to the leagues best record. Dallas has never been as good sense he left (regular season record or playoffs despite adding millions in salary to upgrade the team). Followed that by maturely handling the trade from top notch winning Dallas to $%#& hole Ratner/NETS. Followed that by a All-Star appearance (voted by coaches so not freebee).

Yes last year sucked – but it was an organisational failure fueled by no coaching and a super young immature team with all its key veterans injured or playing out dead contracts. What exactly did you expect Devin to do……

Devin is not going to lead us to a championship (there are only a handful of these guys in the entire league). He is a key piece to a championship team. Love Wall if you want, but Devin is quality.

by Jay-dub on May 18, 2010 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

They both seem to be the same player

One is just not as athletic as the other. Turner’s game reminds me of a young Grant Hill, but without the level of athleticism of a young GH. And LeBron is LeBron. IMO, if we got LeBron, we’d have duplication with Turner. To me, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. If we get the #2, it wouldn’t surprise me if we trade it later in the summer.

by Morph on May 18, 2010 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

The pre-injury Grant Hill might have been more athletic than Turner, but then that Grant Hill was more like Jordan.
Turner is definitely more athletic than any post-injury Hill. Most people haven’t seen many of Turner’s super athletic moves such as double blocks above the rim, 2 seconds apart.

Nets wouldn’t know on June 24 if LeBron would be coming. Odds would be less than 25%, so that is not a reason to not take Turner.

Turner + LeBron would be Devastation to opponents. Who do you double team, and who would be left open?
Turner will be a 2, LeBron the needed 3.

Definitely an ELITE team of only DLee was the FA with LeBron.

But then, this is only the unlikely best case scenario.

I think most Nets fans would be delighted to have an Elite regular season record and lose in 2nd round in Proky's 1st year.

However, that isn’t likely to happen again on a LeBron team, but then he is likely to return to Cleveland.

    LeGlobal

Simply stated, Proky is going to show Lebron “the world”. The one decisive advantage that the Nets have over EVERY team in the NBA is influence worldwide.

I heard some talk show host from LA on XM Radio talking about how shocked he was to hear the Nets could be in the mix. He called NJ “the cancer capital”…..He kept talking about why would anyone want to come to NJ? Why NJ? He said “I would go to Chicago, LA, Miami…but it woult take a lot to get me to NJ”

Well good sir, you forgot to mention that the Nets will be in NY for the majority of Lebrons contract, you didnt grasp the concept that joining the Nets now means you are being placed on the most direct hit to the global markets that can be offered in the NBA, and you also neglected to remember (you say it would take a lot) well, we have a lot!

Go ahead, bet against this Russian…You will lose.

Notice how he picks WFAN to do his interview and not espn? ESPN gives the Nets no respect or air time. Even the (New York version of 1050). Hmmm, maybe because we are the New Jersey Nets and not a team followed by New Yorkers? Well besides, you would think they would atleast bring up such a big event, that of the now richest owner in the NBA being approved or perhaps tomorrow having the potential of landing the first overall pick. BUT, no I didn’t hear much at all about the Nets on 1050. Just shows me that he knows already the place to do an interview is WFAN, home of the New Jersey Nets.

by oman8 on May 18, 2010 6:56 AM EDT reply actions

    He wasn't a sellout

If DG was really a sellout, he would have taken the first offer he was given as did his neighbors years ago. He had refused numerous offers in the past because they were nothing but depreciated values. Another reason he refused so many times was because he had to agree to a gag order that he couldn’t stand up against the project after agreeing with the ESDC on that. Even with the money he got, it’s still less than what the rents in the apartments would be assuming they are ever built. As for Oder, he actually gives research on whenever he makes his claims and gives the links for them as well. Also, he is one of the few reporters who actually knows his side of the story where DG has been slandered by just about every other reporter especially from the NY Times, though it’s mainly because they work in a FCR-owned building. One a sidenote, please learn to spell my name correctly, and if you don’t know what to type, you can always copy and paste it since it’s already spelled there.

Are we ABSOLUTELY SURE this guy is buying the same Nets that we're rooting for?

We’ve suffered so much, I don’t wanna get my heart broken again…

And Stoudamire-for-max-money fans: 3 rebounds last night? This guy is in a fast decline. Please no. He’ll spend 3 years of his 5 year contract in a suit.

by JohnFromLongIsland on May 18, 2010 8:18 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think if Thorn was really interested in Amare, we would have heard more at trade deadline.

Nets had most expiring contracts. They should have been contacted if there was interest, even if only the 3rd team in an Amare trade.

However, it is in the best interests of Nets to have Phoenix lose and Amare do poorly, so that he is more likely to test free agency.
Then Phoenix could say to its fans, that we couldn’t win WITH Amare, so why keep him for 5-6 years and handcuff the team.
That would tempt teams like Knicks and Miami and prevent the price for DLee to skyrocket.

On the other hand I would like to see Nash do well and LA lose.

No doubt Amare is a great athlete, but I can’t see him at this same level for the next 4-5 years. His defense and rebounding will decline further.
DLee has been rising every year and is cheaper and fits in great with BLopez.

by jerry25 on May 18, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

    it kills me...

…to see people balk @ signing David Lee, who at least will be able to rebound and hit the mid range J, and then talk about signing Amare to the max. Amare looked like a child last night while the Lakers bigs went to work on that soft Phoenix frontcourt

Out of the players in the “max money” discussion, Stoudemire and Joe Johnson have both devalued themselves by their weak play. Let the Knicks pay top dollar for trash.

…..they have Noah/Rose/Deng but I fail to see what makes them a better choice than us, or staying in Cleveland. the Bulls lack a legit two guard, and someone that can score with their back to the basket.

and Deng plays LeBron’s position. Would he come off the bench?

Also, if Nets could add DLee first, then I think the choice should be clear for LeBron, depending on tonight. However, Nets might have to clear a little more cap space via Yi or Hump to a team with space.

Also Noah can’t match up against some Bigs, which could prevent LeBron from winning a Championship.

by jerry25 on May 18, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

if the Nets land the 1st pick tonight....

…..I say we start entertaining offers for Devin Harris so we can clear cap space, and then look into acquiring a cheap veteran PG as insurance for Wall and T-Will. Hell, if Dooling would resign for cheap that would solve everything.

Then, on the first day of free agency once the Knicks renounce David Lee, we pounce.

There would be a taker for Yi if Nets give a decent future draft pick along with him.

If he went to a team with cap space, it could free several million in cap space, giving Thorn more flexibility for FA.

However, Proky might keep Yi for more International attention, not for his ability.

I wonder if the decision to trade Yi for cap space could be withheld until Mid-July, as needed?
I also wonder how long Nets would have to wait in order to trade Hump and his impending $3.2 million contract. Hump would be easily to trade than Yi.
