Yormark: Prokhorov Helping Sell Tickets...Lots of Them

Mikhail Prokhorov's purchase of the Nets is already having an effect.  "We’re off to the best start in new season-ticket sales in team history," Brett Yormark tells Sports Business Journal, "in large part because our fans see how committed ownership is to winning and because we have such a compelling story to tell."  Yormark didn't provide details.

Prokhorov's face already adorns the team's latest media buy, "Meet Our New Big Man" and Wednesday's press conference in Manhattan is expected to be a major media draw.  Meanwhile, SBJ reports no wholesale management changes are initially expected under the new ownership.

    Really Brett?

Or maybe it’s because of Newark, Brett.

    You can't say

it has nothing to do with Newark. I can guarantee sales would have gone up just from a move to Newark, probably not drastically, but we’ll never know will we?

    the Nets know

    they do extensive marketing surveys.

I am not saying it’s not about Newark. I am saying it not primarily about Newark. It’s primarily about the team’s other changes.

I can turn your question on its head: I can guarantee sales wouldn’t have gone up much if the team was still owned by Ratner, still running up debt at a rate of $50 to $60 million a year…and not spending a spare dime on the team.

It remains an open question whether a move to Newark will change things up. It is not an open question whether the team’s economic predicament would have continued to hurt the team.

    You're right,

it’s not about Newark. Having a billionaire owner who actually cares about the team is a much much bigger deal. I can’t even see a scenario where the rat would move the team to Newark, he’s never showed any interest in anything other than Brooklyn since day one.

Come to think of it, how the hell did he ever pass an NBA committee to become owner!?

by Frigidevil on May 17, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yormark is probably being straight (he always says sales are good even when obviously they are not) but think about it, when you are down to a record low, it doesn’t take much to show an increase.

I wouldn’t be totally dismissive if JRons comment (Andys should be deleted). Simply because the Nets have been advertising a limited time $299 price, plus we have been hearing anecdotally here that mass transit (availability) in Newark is selling tickets.

Half of it is because of the move to Newark, the other half is an owner committed to win! THAT IS THE ANSWER! Why would fans committ their money and time to an owner who was a big fat RAT loser? NOT TOO MANY! Newark here we come!

I'd like to see a break out of where

the season ticket sales are coming from, NY vs. NJ

    Please

How many stories have you seen in the media about the Nets moving to Newark in the last few weeks.

Now, how many have there been about Prokhorov…and the Draft Lottery…and free agency.

You’re telling Newark is a big part of this? It may be part of it, but it is NOT a big part of it. It’s the BUZZ that’s driving things.

by Net Income on May 17, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Is that directed towards me or JustinNJ?

    Not surprising

….i think it’s a combo of a lot of things, but new ownership is easily the reason behind ticket sales booming. Nets fans feel a lot more comfortable now with a guy at the helm who wants to put a good product out there on the floor and establish a culture of winning and dominance. The Nets will be receiving plenty of my disposable income this season because of that as well.

    or even #2 pick

Then we would see “Do The Evan Turner” videos appear.

Lots of NJ fans will be supporting the team in Newark...

And I bet most of those same fans will support the team in Brooklyn. The NJ fanatics on this board are definately the minority. If they weren’t ticket sales would still stink as not many New Yorkers are going to buy Newark season tickets.

by rundmc00 on May 17, 2010 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

    But not in Brooklyn

Once the move to Brooklyn starts, the fan base will drop like flies. It will take a while to make up for all those lost fans the second they start playing in Knicks terroritory. Let’s not forget that most of them will never convert just because the Nets are there, and I am just talking about Brooklyn here, so this does not include the rest of the city. Overall, the move to Brooklyn will be a shot in the foot for the longtime, loyal fans of the Nets.

    Right...

You know what is going to happen to the fan base when the Nets get to Brooklyn.

Brooklyn was simply meant to be and brighter days are ahead.

by rundmc00 on May 17, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

We can support the team by watching them on tv. BUT, doing that commute to Brooklyn, highly unlikely. To Newark, yes. I will be attending the games in Newark.

    Scientific Studu just in.

Hmmm… here’s a scientific study (replete with the breakdown you were looking for):
Last year – No one goes to Izod for regular season games
Last Year – Newark is packed for pre-season games.
(This occurred b4 anyone knew of a jet-skiing monolith from Russia or a potential # 1 pick).
Oh, and Brett Yormark is a liar, er excuse me, Brett Yormark’s job requires lying.)

I’d say it’s mostly about a hungry new fan base in Newark and a stronger old one who loves the convenience.

Good - looking forward to having more Nets fans sitting around me

instead of fans from the opposing teams. Hope they sell thousands of new season tickets.

    Newark is good.

But damn, that place is creepy at night. Brooklyn would be AWESOME!!!

by Malorkayel on May 17, 2010 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

I love Brooklyn. i make Newark work.
But make no mistake about it. I live in two different apartments within walking distance of the proposed BK site, and it rivals any creepy I have seen anywhere else.
I’ve had to wash blood of my shoes.
