    Great excerpt from article...

Mr. Ratner explained as well that while construction on the site and arena has been ongoing, today also marks a significant milestone in the history of the project because all paper work related to the arena lease has been completed and bond funds have been released from escrow. "We are thankful to our partners, especially the Mayor and the Governor," Mr. Ratner said. "Today, the promise of Atlantic Yards, including the Barclays Center, the jobs and the housing, becomes a reality."

There is zero chance that Barclay’s will not happen!

by rundmc00 on May 12, 2010 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't be celebrating just yet

As a person who follows the WTC site, there were numerous times when everything looked good, but then started to go back to the drawing board. Even when it looked like the Fraudem Tower was going good, pro-Towers supporters such as myself keep finding many ways to get back in the playing field by capitalizing on the problems whenever there is a chance for it. At first, that might sound like fighting dirty, but it does make more feel the reality of what’s going on. I wouldn’t be surprised if there will be construction delays due to costs or even mob connections on the AY just like what is going on at the WTC site. No surprise if they can’t get everything built just like what’s going on here due to costs, which would result in leaving those unbuilt sites as interim parking lots for years to come. Then again, it could even end up like after what Pfizer got after acquiring the land that they were able to take after the ruling of Kelo vs New London in which it was all left as a vacant lot in the end. As for the latest lawsuit, it hasn’t been dropped, it’s been rescheduled for next Tuesday at the same location, though I probably won’t be at that one. Overal, the fight isn’t over just yet, though it probably never will.

by Tal Barzilai on May 12, 2010 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

    Apples vs. oranges

The WTC site is some of the most incredibly valuable real estate in the entire world (not to mention the enormous symbolic and emotional significance). AY is just another non-descript area of Brooklyn. I don’t think you can equate the two.

by rundmc00 on May 12, 2010 9:45 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It probably never will be over?

    Uh, no. It’s over.

The proceeds from the $500 million in tax exempt bonds have been released. Prokhorov has agreed to buy the $100 million in junk bonds needed for the arena infrastructure. He has already transferred nearly $300 million in cash.

The oral hearing in the case formerly known as Williams was suddenly delayed for six days. The two remaining plaintiffs are 1) a property holder whose land and building have been condemned but not appraised and 2) a property holder whose title is in dispute. You don’t think it was postponed because of settlement talks? NAH. Neither property is in the arena footprint anyway.

That leaves the Williams air rights suit in which Williams has said he is in or the money, not to slow the arena; and the Brooklyn Speaks case where plaintiffs are asking the judge who initially dismissed the case to reopen it.

You’re banking on those cases stopping construction?

And oh yeah, the “investigation” sought by the congressman who wants the Nets to stay at the IZOD.

by Net Income on May 12, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

The future is not written in stone

While no actual construction has started (excavations/demolitions don’t count), there is still a chance it may not happen. Let’s not forget that the Jets Stadium was very close to actually happening and stopped. After hearing how MSG will be rennovated next summer, that officially put a nail in the coffin for the Moynihan Station that was supposed to go where it is right now. I even feel right now that what’s going on at the WTC site will hit another roadblock. BTW, the site where Ratner wants to build is even bigger considering that he wants 22 acres, which is almost double that of the WTC site, so it is important to compare those two. Then again, if the Vanderbuilt Yards is in a such a non-descript part of Brooklyn, then why does Ratner want it so much? My guess is to just have another legacy of his ego.

for the next 2 and a half, three seasons, and then they are just moving to NY which isn’t that far(not that I’ll be driving there on a weekday, I hate the city traffic)….instead of being sour, just realize that this is the reality of the situation and accept what you cannot change.

Support the team while they are in Newark, at the very least.

And the fans were done dirty in Seattle for a lot of reasons.....

It was a team effort in every sense. The city (Greg Nickels), the city of Seattle had this referendum banning public spending on sports teams, the WA state legislature not passing legislation to come up with funding, David Stern, Clay Bennett and what not. Also the owners for allowing it to happen as well. Only 2 voted against the move (Cuban & Paul Allen) at the time in 2008.

The NBA regrets leaving Seattle as it turned out to be perhaps the biggest PR blunder in David Stern’s tenure. And, quite honestly, as a Seattle resident, I’m not sure where they’d put a new arena other than where it’s at. There isn’t a lot of development spots around the Puget Sound region without changing zoning and all that for an entire place.

There is so many problems on the Seattle front it ain’t funny. What the Nets are going through right now is a piece of cake compared to the issue’s here. And, as any Nets fans/opposer of Atlantic Yards can tell you, it’s not easy for the Nets either.

by Jay2fly on May 12, 2010 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Real NYC team vs Wannabe NYC team

Honestly, if people had the choice to choose between a team that has been in the city since the beginning of the league compared to when that was transplanted there, the chances are that they will root for the real NYC team rather than a relocated one. The Knicks actually predate the Nets since they have been around since 1946 when the NBA was still known as the BAA (Baskettball Association of America), while the Nets only came in 1967 and were under the radar for their first 9 years as an ABA (American Baskettball Association), and that was even as a NY team. Most people didn’t even know who the Nets were until the became an NBA franchise in 1976 after the ABA folded. However, the Nets saw that they couldn’t be a NY team if they kept on being the Knicks’s shadow, which is why they moved back to NJ for the first time since their first season after their first year in the NBA. It was only then, that the Nets starting building a fan base after being in the NBA. This is exactly what Michael Moore meant when he said about how more would rather vote for real Republicans rather than a Democrat who acts like a Republican in that they know what the real Democrats are like rather than just acting like wannabees for the other party.

    "baskettball"

Considering this is an NBA blog, you should probably learn how to spell the word “basketball”. It’s so surprising that such a “true” Nets fan as yourself doesn’t even know how to spell the sport that the team plays. Just a heads up, when there is a red line under a word it means that you spelled the word incorrectly and if you right click it gives you suggestions to correct the word.

It’s funny how you’ve mentioned before that you’re a big Mets fan but can’t see how two teams could possibly coexist in New York City. You could have called the Mets a wannabe NYC team when they were first founded but now they have a pretty decent fan base. The Nets fan base in Brooklyn will consist of people who don’t like the Knicks, people who take pride in Brooklyn and (hopefully) people who support the Nets because they are a winning team.

Lastly, enough with the extremely strange and irrelevant allusions to Michael Moore. Please.

    The real errors

Brifeib, the Mets are not the like the Nets. They weren’t a team that played a while in another city let alone another state before moving to where they are right now, they were an expansion team that was always there. The Nets already had a existing franchise prior to entering the NBA, the Mets did not. If you know about MLB, then you should know that NL is not the same thing as the Western Confrence, plus interleague play durring the regular season wasn’t even introduced until 1997 as the first Subway Series matchup came the next season, though they still don’t play of the other teams outside their league. BTW, most of the Mets fanbase comes from those who liked the Dodgers and Giants hence teams of the NL, most of them were not Yankees fans originally. As for the spelling errors, it’s not as big of an error as claiming that most fans want the move to occur when I tend to find that false. Again, just because they all don’t post here, doesn’t make those such as myself a minority when most do not post on websites to begin with. As for Michael Moore and what I said between the true ones compared to the pretenders, please watch that video where he talks with Wolf Blitzer over on CNN on what he thinks about the healthcare bill, and it’s probably on his website, so please watch it, which will give you the idea of what I meant.

by Tal Barzilai on May 12, 2010 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The real errors? What a joke.

Obviously the Mets and Nets aren’t an exact parallel but the Mets show that there are enough sports fans in New York for the Nets to carve out their own niche in the city and have a healthy-sized fan base next to a much more storied franchise.

Then you said, “As for the spelling errors, it’s not as big of an error as claiming that most fans want the move to occur when I tend to find that false” Um, I never said that most fans want the move and see no point in speculating either way. You on the other hand, have stated that most fans oppose the move, based solely on your personal opinion. Thus, unless you can actually provide evidence that suggests that most Nets fans oppose the move then your opinion is no more valid than anyone who disagrees with you. So no, it is not an error to disagree with you, which I didn’t even do.

Lastly, I have no need to watch that clip of Moore because I understand his point it’s just not relevant in the slightest to this conversation. The Nets will play in the same city as the Knicks but not be “wannabe” Knicks just like the Mets are not wannabe Yankees. Proky is nothing like Dolan so I see no reason why he would run a team like Dolan runs the Knicks. The Nets will create their own identity and own brand in New York with Prokhorov at the helm.

    NBA vs MLB

The format of the NBA and MLB are very different. In the NBA one team plays the others, whearas in the MLB one team only plays against all of the team in their league along with just a few in the other league. Did you ever know why the sports page has one side for AL scores and another for NL scores when that’s not the case for the NBA with the Eastern and Western Confrences? The reason is because the MLB had a history of having those two leagues seperate from each other unless it was the all-star game or World Series. Although it’s true that the Mets did take fans of previously existing teams, it was mainly from the Dodgers and Giants, which they used as their team colors, but hardly anything from the Yankees. The reason those former fans rooted for the Mets was because they were fans of the NL, not the AL. The first time the Mets and Yankees actually faced each other was in 1998, not back in 196 when the Mets first existed or even durring the mid 1970’s when the Yankees had to share the now-demolished Shea Stadium with them when they couldn’t use their now-demolished Yankee Stadium when it was being rennovated. It was only when interleague play was allowed durring the regular season the rivarly was known since there was no Mets-Yankees World Series until 2000, but that was after it was introduced. The difference here is that the Knicks have been playing the Nets ever since they jumped over into the NBA after the ABA folded, so their rivalry actually predates the Mets-Yankees one. Since the Knicks have been around longer than the Nets, they will be looked as a team in the shadow. The Knicks already have a mark in the city, while the Nets do not, which is why they have a good part of NJ for their fans. On a sidenote, the Yankees weren’t originally a NY team, they were the original Baltimore Orioles and didn’t come to NYC until a year later, though they were called the Highlanders until they moved to The Bronx where they are right now, so there’s a little history lesson for you.

So now you've appointed yourself teacher, in addtion to preacher?

Do you really think you are the only guy who knows the history of interleague play or the history of the Mets and Yankees? Give me a break. It must be a terrible burden to both be so young and yet be smarter than everyone else. But don’t worry, that wears off as you mature.

    You still don't get it

I just made an entire comment last night on how the NBA and MLB are two different things. I even made it so that George W Bush and Sarah Palin can understand it. It’s not my fault that i have done my research, while others didn’t. This is what seperates the educated from the ramblers and conspirators. I would like to see you give me something more than just a blanket statement to why the idea of moving the Nets to Brooklyn is right.

Between Nets lovers and Knicks haters...

…there’s a substantial and natural built-in fan base already (I’m both).

You guys who liked the Nets because they were a Jersey team just don’t get it. Real fans love their team because they just love their team! Are you a Devils fan, Tal? I’m not, and could care less what they do. Do you like any college team and if so, sare they all in NJ?

I love the Nets, my favorite bunch of never-do-well misfits! I also love NJ, but I don’t care if the Nets are from NJ. They’re my boys and my heart goes where they go. I am grateful they aren’t moving to the West Coast, cuz I would still follow them, but it would cost more for NBA League Pass and wreak hell on my beauty sleep.

    For the record

I don’t follow the NHL, so I don’t like any of the teams. I don’t follow the NFL either let alone the MLS or any college sports. The only leagues I do follow are the NBA, WNBA, and MLB. In other words, I am fan of the Nets, Mets, and Liberty (Please dont’ start a sexist comment on them or the WNBA). However, whatever I like is my business and not that of others. One thing I do know is that majority of the Nets fan base happens to be in NJ, and as N’Sync would say it, “It aint no lie baby bye, bye, bye.” I still don’t find it that most of those Brooklyn would convert to liking the Nets just because they move there especially when they are long time Knicks fans. Overall, most loyal fans will care if the Nets leave.

    agreed.....buuuut

I do want to Nets to stay in NJ, and it hurts that they’re going, but if you look at it…this has been the plan since 2004. This is what’s best for the team. This is whats best for the fans…who remain. Not saying transitioning to a Brooklyn based team will be easy…but it’s obvious now that it’s something that needs to be done.

    Plenty of room in Brooklyn/NY

A billion alone in Brooklyn. When I lived in Queens the majority were Knick fans but some Bulls (back when they had MJ damn I’m getting old) . A lot of hate for the NETS; jealousy really; that will change over years/decades.

New Orleans change of ownership has fallen through for the time being.

This is great news for the hope of Avery Johnson waiting around to get an offer from Nets.
Hopefully JVG won’t be available. AJ should be on Thorn’s short list.

ESPN has a story on Nets new ownership.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nba/news/story?id=5181478

There were 2 errors though. They used old numbers from Forbes 2009 to say Proky is worth only 9.5 million
(new Russian estimate is closer to 18 billion).

They also said that Nets have 23 million in cap space, when number may be over 27 million considering other factors.
