Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Deadlines and Commitments - III

With only a few legal formalities standing between Mikhail Prokhorov and the Nets, the team is now fully engaged in preparing for a new coach, busy nights on May 18 (Draft Lottery) and June 24 (Draft) and an even busier week starting July 1 (Free Agency).  Here's a list of key dates for the ownership transfer, NBA Draft  and free agency...after the jump.

Star-divide

April 25 - NBA Draft Early Entry Eligibility Deadline (11:59 p.m. ET).

April 29 - NBA Teams can conduct or attend workouts with Early Entrants.

May 7 - Deadline for residents and businesses to leave the Barclays Center footprint. Mikhail Prokhorov approval as Nets owner expected within days of the deadline.

May 8 -  NCAA Draft Early Entry Entrant Withdrawal Deadline (5:00 p.m. ET)

May 14 - Premiere for "Just Wright" the Nets-centric movie with Queen Latifah and Common.

May 18 – Before a conference championship game, representatives of the 14 non-playoff teams gather in Secaucus for the NBA Draft lottery. Prokhorov is expected to be on the dias representing the Nets.

May 19-23 - NBA Pre-Draft Combine in Chicago.  Fifty-two top prospects gather in Chicago the morning after the Lottery to be measured and interviewed, then show off their skills to NBA GM's. Top picks usually only stay long enough to be measured.

June 5-7 - Adidas Eurocamp. Although this is not seen as a big year for Europeans players, the best will gather in  Treviso, just outside Venice, for the international version of the Pre-Draft combine.

June 14 - International Draft Early Entry Entrant Withdrawal Deadline (5:00 p.m. ET)

June 24 – NBA Draft, Madison Square Garden, New York (7:00 p.m. ET). Nets' $1.37 million trade exception, the remainder of the Vince Carter trade exception, expires.

June 29-30 -- Nets must exercise team options for Keyon Dooling ($3.82 million with a $500,000 buyout) and Chris Douglas-Roberts ($854,389). Kris Humphries must exercise his player option ($3.2 million). Contracts for Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe as well as the rest of the Nets' coaching staff expire. Of front office and coaching staffs, only Bobby Marks, Thorn's VP of basketball operations, has a contract beyond June 30.

June 30 - Deadline for two businesses to leave the larger Atlantic Yards footprint. One of the buildings in question will be used as office space for construction operations.

July 1 - NBA teams can begin negotiating with free agents. Expect reports of signings almost immediately. Nets can renounce cap holds for players with expiring contracts.

July 8 - NBA teams can officially begin signing free agents.

Woo Hoo!

Man i don’t know how i’m going to handle May 18th fellow Net fans!

Go Nets!

To start ...

don’t drink coffee, or any drink with caffeine in it.
keep yourself busy. Read anything about the draft. Stay tuned to ESPN.
Then late in the afternoon, take some NyQuil.

I won't know how to handle....

….myself if that pick goes lower than #2.

I think as an act of good service for the Nets fanbase, depending on what happens on the day of the lottery, NetsDaily and NetIncome should either:

a) list the numbers of suicide hotlines on the front page if we end up getting screwed at the lottery, or

b)list the numbers of alcohol abuse help groups and bailbondsmen if the Nets win the first pick.

Turner might not be great...

Harris, TWil and Turner seem redundant. Too many people that need the ball. I would really like to trade Devin but am willing to wait to see how he does under a new coach.

by rundmc00 on Apr 23, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Harris is the odd man out IMO...

…I’d trade Harris, use Turner/Williams as the perimeter combo and in Harris’ place I’d put a shooter in at the “1”

I don’t envision duplication with Turner/Williams because Turner can put the ball in the basket better than Williams, so he can play off of the ball while Williams focuses on getting everyone their touches.

Having a point forward will prove to be an absolute luxury

You don't trade Harris if you land Turner

There’s no reason to do that. Harris wouldn’t be the duplicated card we’d have. In fact, he’d be a perfect complement to a playmaking wing. IMO you couldn’t start TWill and Turner together. Both a re wings, not PGs. You either have Williams as 6th man or take a big man ahead of ET.

by Andres B on Apr 24, 2010 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

That we can agree on.

The beat writers seem to agree that Thorn wouldn’t be trading Harris if Wall isn’t taken in the draft, so there is no point even discussing that possibility.

Even if Wall was taken, Harris would still be better than Wall initially. Harris could easily be kept until the trade deadline. Wall might not even be a starter initially, except there would be lots of pressure to start him and keep CLee on the bench.

And TWill doesn’t “need the ball”. He would be fine as a 6th man on a team trying to compete for the best in the East.
As long as he gets about 30 min. of PT.

Not all of them

Iannazzone said there are those in the front office who would like to see what Harris and Wall could do together…might be the fastest backcourt in NBA history…and the skinniest.

I think if the Nets take Turner, CDR is gone, gone.

But bottom line, there will be a new coach and his opinion (and skills) will determine a lot of what happens.

by Net Income on Apr 24, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if the Nets land Turner

CDR should be a keeper. Harris, Lee and Turner would be your starters, with TWill as 6th man (he and ET could not start together at the wings, IMO) and CD-R as a scoring punch guy off the bench for 20 minutes a night. Add a 3rd string PG/ combo guard to replace KD and a combo forward (like Babbitt) that gets some spot minutes at the 3 who could provide shooting for the last spot in the perimeter rotation.

What would you think about absorbing Beasley's salary in exchange for draft pick(s), so that Pat Riley would have extra cap space?

That would reduce Nets cap space, which would prevent them from overpaying free agents, as you say, and they would get the 2008 #2 draft pick in Beasley. Maybe a good coach could turn around Beasley?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2010/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&page=beasleygame3-100423

I would prefer to ask Miami to take back Yi’s salary, but that would defeat their purpose.

by jerry25 on Apr 24, 2010 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I say go for it

If all we have to give up is picks and take on Beasley’s contract, that’d be a steal. I’d be willing to take on another contract if the Heat want us to do so.

HaHa

I’m laughing but at the same time serious. Agree Mrbills A and B!

Hardly a milestone day…

I watched the trailer and it was awful! Wish it was about the Knicks instead.

light-hearted amusement

I still haven't heard a clear explanation why Prokhorov shouldn't accept Stern's offer for an earlier approval date - via Email?

The only thing that could go wrong now with Prokhorov is for a Treasury Dept. investigation delaying his approval by the NBA for weeks if not months.

Why take that risk. Early approval of Prokhorov (between now and May 7) gives the Nets an advantage in the search for a top coach.

Speaking of a new coach..

Yesterday it was reported (I think on NBATV) that New Orleans is talking to Doug Collins for the coaching spot.

Also, just posted, the sale of the Hornets has reached an impasse.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5130407

This is good news if Thorn wants to go after Avery Johnson.
I wouldn’t mind Tom T. as the highest paid Asst. Coach, if Avery had no objection.
Those 2 coaching moves could totally change the outlook for the Nets.
They could make Harris back into an all around top PG.
They could make RGay into a well rounded player.

Heck, maybe the Nets could get Beasley in a trade that includes Yi, and then turn Beasley into a better player.
Beasley, it was announced is on the trading block, as soon as Miami loses its last game.

Miami would save about $900,000 in cap space if they swapped Yi with Beasley.
Then Miami could sign Bosh, Amare or Boozer to max contracts.

Under the sale agreement

he has the option of moving ahead of vacant possession, but if I was his lawyer, based on the history of this project, I would recommend waiting til it’s all done.

There is one suit outstanding and it may falter since all but one of the plaintiffs has made a deal with Ratner. Hearing on that is May 12. Even the lawyer who handled Goldstein’s condemnation and Norman Oder of Atlantic Yards Report think its a long shot.

The Pascrell thing is a red herring. Prokhorov didn’t buy his stake in Renaissance Capital (one share less than 50%) til June 5, 2009. The events in question took place before and in some cases, years before.

by Net Income on Apr 24, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

However, weighing the risk of opening up an investigation (even if it leads nowhere) vs. the risk of the lawsuit delaying construction..

I would worry more about the former happening. Of course lawyers are paid to worry about legal concerns.
A lawyer who is also a Nets Fan, like our CONTROL Agent, njnylawyer, might advise to be more concerned with a quicker approval so that Prokhorov’s investment with the Nets would be successful.

Even if the May 12 lawsuit dragged on, I didn’t think it would delay construction, especially if they move fast between now and May 12 with excavation work.
Between May 7 and May 12, Ratner could potentially see to it that even the 9 story Condo is leveled by then.
Hard to imagine any Judge reversing direction after that.
