Grizzlies Hold Off Nets' Comeback

The Nets have had seven tries at a winning streak, and they've failed all seven times. The latest attempt came Monday night in Memphis when a pair of second-half comebacks both fell short. It was a close game for the first 17 minutes, but the Grizzlies then went on a 23-4 run to take control. The Nets came almost all the way back in the third, cutting what was a 21-point lead down to two. Their only chance to tie came late in the fourth, when they had the ball down three with 2:30 left, but they came up empty and couldn't get a stop after that. Memphis shot 47 percent from the field and had 16 offensive rebounds. Courtney Lee led the Nets with a career-high 30 points, Devin Harris added 28, and Terrence Williams had another strong game (14 points, six rebounds and six assists) off the bench, but Brook Lopez had as many turnovers (three) as field goals and was outplayed by Marc Gasol, particularly in the first half. Gasol finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks while Rudy Gay and Mike Conley had 21 each. Zach Randolph (back) was a late scratch.

Not a great way

to start off the comments.

Whenever Lopez does bad, we lose.

Capitalization and punctuation are wonderful things.

My deepest apologies NetsDaily. The last site didn’t mind grammar errors.

Oh yes we did.

The site rules and guidelines are the same as they were on the old site.

The amount of patience we have for sloppy posting varies from time to time, but from the day we added comments to the old site, spelling, punctuation and capitalization have been important to us.

Disappointing loss but you have to like how they fought back in the third. Josh Boone played very well as the starting PF. He was instrumental in that third quarter comeback…

by Ryan243 on Mar 8, 2010 10:45 PM EST reply actions

I could have sworn that Josh deliberately missed his 2nd free badly, so as to try to get the ball back!

If only Josh was able to get over his free throw mental problem, I would want him back at Vets Min.

i appreciate the fact that netsdaily is pushing for proper use of grammar. Tough loss for the Nets tonight.

Gasol almost doubled Lopez's stats.

Lopez can dominate the smaller David Lee, but didn’t work on Gasol.

the single biggest reason for nets' losses

didn’t play in the game…and we still lost? nets’ bigs are no match for dwight howard version 2.0 marc gasol…lol

Nets lose and are outrebounded by a team without its best scorer and rebounder in Yi’s absence… Coincidence? I think there is no real correlation to be seen.

Anderson for Lee

Looks like Thorn wasn’t wrong about that one. Lee is averaging 26 ppg over the last four games and is shooting better than 60 per cent overall and from deep during that stretch.

by Net Income on Mar 8, 2010 11:03 PM EST reply actions

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Just kidding, Lee is great, like a complete player out there. Anderson isn’t bad either, Magic is very deep.

Correction, it's what YOU want.

That trade is in fantasy land, so there is no point discussing it. Also, Nets can’t win without Yi, yet again.

magic...

So what happens to CLee if Nets get Turner or Wall?

With Wall, Devin has to play SG; with Turner, there isn’t room for CLee either, unless Evan splits his time at 1-2-3 (which I think he could handle).

In either case, CDR’s minutes would be limited. Best case is for CDR to play well and get some value on draft night (eg. Dallas pick + CDR to move up – maybe get Patterson from KY as a backup Big)

by jerry25 on Mar 8, 2010 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

The guy who may become trade bait aint Lee in my opinion, its Harris. Harris could be involved in a sign and trade with a second free agent. Or, we keep him and bring the rookie off of the bench.

by Chris2 on Mar 8, 2010 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yea I’m a bit confused as to how we’ll work things out if we get Turner or Wall.

Wall, Courtney Lee and a polished up T-Will at SF could be a pretty nice trio. If we’re talking a decision of Harris or Lee at SG, I’d think I’d have to side with Lee. Sure Harris was an All-Star, but he wasn’t an All-Star at SG. At that point, I’d look to move Harris for a legit PF. Do trade opportunities of that sort even exist?

Devin Harris for Josh Smith on an Atlanta team that doesn’t retain Joe Johnson? Who says no first?

by Joe Uras on Mar 9, 2010 9:57 AM EST up reply actions

Lee is playing lights out right now, Harris is doing well, TWill shows glimpses of a future star, Lopez playing at a high level. I would be OK with a top 3 pick, Wall, Turner, or Favors…who is raw but has star potential and we need a beast inside to play alongside Brook. Cousins seems a risk with the intangibles so I’m hoping we avoid the 4th pick. Then you throw in the cap space, the billionaire owner, the Rock, Brooklyn. The team has a bright future.

by Chris2 on Mar 8, 2010 11:22 PM EST reply actions

Favors is dropping. Not sure if GT will even play in NCAA

Someone else should emerge from March Madness as a top 4 player. We only focus on the major schools.

by jerry25 on Mar 8, 2010 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

what happened to lopez?

is this what happens when the other 2 bigs can’t be effective more than 5 ft from the basket? lopez no space to work with and defense packed in the paint? ;)

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 8, 2010 11:39 PM EST reply actions

The Griz

Left Boone open the entire night, even when he was in the paint. They pretty much dared us to win the game with our 4s. If Hump had hit some jumpers, would have spaced out better. Lopez ended up getting touches near the 3pt line, with defenders already packing the paint.

Lopez have to sacrifice, hit some outside shots and let Boone/Hump offensive rebound.

by Malorkayel on Mar 8, 2010 11:48 PM EST reply actions

yes...they would leave boone open...

even in the paint because even if boone gets the ball all alone under the basket, he will rush hs shot and miss for fear of getting fouled…

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 9, 2010 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

My main man Harris / Defense or lack thereof.

Harris is killing me right now — and I like the guy. His lack of poise is a glaring — especially in tight games. He’s got a world of ability (despite an erratic jump shot) but at 27, I have to wonder if this is all we’ll ever see. Chris Paul is 24, Deron Williams, 25, yet somehow they possess court savvy. What is the problem? Where is the growth?
-
On another note the lack of intensity on defense (esp. early in games), and the constant missed assignments leading to easy baskets has been endemic to the Nets for the past few years regardless of who is on the roster.

This putrid coaching is infuriating. The fact that these players aren’t “getting it” is infuriating. The fact that the Nets are a young team is also becoming a convenient crutch — as it does not explain the fact that there has been a collective malaise in this organization for several years now.

by Delacratic on Mar 9, 2010 12:16 AM EST reply actions

Forget Chris Paul

I think Darren Collison would do a better job running this team.

Everyone In This Thread Needs To Thank You For This Post!

I 100% agree with you to the point were I would like to break it down even further. @Delacratic is spot on with this post. No matter who this organization brings in for some weird reason we always stunk on defense. And this has been going on for YEARS! We always rank low on the defensive end of the court and some have to wonder if it’s the players or the coaches. I vote coaches because there is no reason why we should always stink on the defensive end. Instead of bringing in new players I think we REALLY need to change this coaching staff there is no excuse for THE NETS to always stink on defense. Yes bringing in defensive minded players is the 1st step to achieving this goal but we need defensive minded coaching and assistant coaching because this is getting utterly ridiculous.

I wonder what would it take to pry Tom Thibodeau from the Celtics’ grasp…

I’ve admired him for years, and I’m obviously far from the only one. I believe Rockin’ Rod is a big fan as well.

I’m not sure if Thibodeau would only leave the Celtics for a head coaching job elsewhere, that’s the issue. If he’d be interested in a new start with a young and emerging team, and a new coach (like Coach K, Jeff Van Gundy, Coach Cal… insert alternative name here), then maybe he may consider us…

Just a thought.

Miserable Forwards Play...Again!

We got nothing from our forwards, that is why we lost, again. The “magic” seems to have left THE HUMPH, and CDR and HASSELL gave us nothing. Brook was outplayed for one of the rare times this season, but again, HE’S NOT THE POINT GUARD! You may think that Devin played well, from the stat line, but a closer look shows 4 assists and 4 turnovers, not so good. Another strong game from LEE and Boone showed what’s he brings. If Boone can do this for five games, he earns a spot at the end of the bench on this roster next year. Did you see Marcus Williams hit that three?

It's one quarter...

Recently since the team has been relatively healthy and playing “well” it seems like there’s always just ONE QUARTER where the team completely tanks and digs themselves an unsurmountable hole…

If they could just put together 4 respectable quarters…

by NetsForce on Mar 9, 2010 12:31 AM EST reply actions

I saw you post that on realgm

Nets are not very disciplined and don’t know how to close out games. Announcers been saying this all year.

by Malorkayel on Mar 9, 2010 12:43 AM EST up reply actions

True

It’s sad and predictable to watch the lack of poise this team has in the end game. It’s like they completely forget how to run an offensive set.

Marc Gasol

I am impressed with how much Gasol has improved this year. He looks like he has more of an NBA body compared to last year and he is way more effective in the post. Last year, Lopez was clearly better, this year, not so much.

by ispartan on Mar 9, 2010 12:47 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I’m not sure we can say that Gasol is the better player right now just because he beat Brook in their matchup in this game. That’s a pretty long bow to draw.

I actually think Brook has had the better season to date, all things considered.

Marc Gasol

15 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 2.3 apg this year vs. 11.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 1.7 apg last year, though he’s averaging 6 more minutes a game than last year so make of that what you will, I’d say he’s at least consistent. Brook has 19 ppg, 9 rpg, 2.2 apg this year so the numbers are close. The thing I don’t like about Brook is that he’s soft. His post game interview quotes him as saying “It was rough,” Lopez said. “There wasn’t much I could do defensively against Marc [Gasol].”
That’s frustrating. Marc Gasol isn’t a center that teams “can’t do anything with”.
I really hope the Nets get a good, defensive minded coach next season. The offense definitely has upside.
I only joined the blogs a week or so ago, which allows me to follow my favorite teams more, and I already want to pull my hair out (exaggeration obviously, it’s just a game). The Nets are not that bad! I enjoy the threads discussing potential draft picks and whether to get DLee in FA, but is there a thread showing the available coaches? I think that would be an excellent start.

You guys got what you wanted

So, no Yi, and we started Boone. Did we win?

We lost! How could that happen?! Yi is the cause of every single loss this season, but he didn’t play, how did we lose? He must’ve rearranged the furniture to give us bad feng shui!

Yes

Boone played well, his tough inside play was what the Nets needed to make their comeback in the 3Q.

Yes

It was also Boone’s inability to do anything 5 ft away from the basket was what the Grizz needed to pack the paint and give no space for Brook to operate…

Selfish Guards and Bad Coaching

58 points 8 assists and 6 turnovers!
DH is a Diva. Period
Need I say more?
Why didn’t Hump start? He deserved a start.
Brook needs to be more vocal on the court and call for the ball.
DH and Lee ran around shoooting the ball.
KiKi is a cheerleader on an ego trip!
Brook needs the ball early. Brook got his 1st rebound in the 3rd Q!
Why isn’t TWill starting? He’s the best PG on this team.
LFrank would have this team winning more. Sorry. I said it.
Fratello even said “you have to give your big man touches early, to keep him involved”
Fratello would be a perfect fit for this team. He’s watched the Nets all year up close.
Lee or DH is trade bait when Wall is drafted!
This team doesn’t need Gay or a SF this team needs a PF and a coach.

by DJ HeavyDuty on Mar 9, 2010 7:55 AM EST reply actions

I thought we would never lose without Yi.

The fact that Lopez and Hump were out played and Boone who played well was in for 17 min might have had something to do with it. I wish we had Yi last night. I mean if he was in I could have been sleeping by halftime cuz we never would have made a comeback. Why is everybody with an i at the end of their name so pathetic?

by msm2 on Mar 9, 2010 8:50 AM EST reply actions

We need big men... Part 2.

You can keep Wall and Turner. I want to draft Cousins or Favors.

Who will play PF on this team next year? Boone? Humpty Dumpty? Yikes?

Without a true big man we will be guard/wing heavy with no defense up front, no rebounding and limited scoring.

We have had this problem at PF for years now. Drafting Wall or Turner is not the answer.

Lets draft Cousins or Favors or even Whiteside and hope for the best.

Let Wall go play in Minnesota or G.S.

by M I K E on Mar 9, 2010 8:57 AM EST reply actions

Hump is overrated. He’s really inconsistent. He ain’t talented at all, and his shot selection is atrocious. He’s an OK banger, but on a better team he wouldn’t be more than 2nd/3rd big off the bench, he shouldn’t get more than 15-20 minutes a night… but with Yi out, we have nothing else.

I like the job Josh Boone did. Unlike Hump, he plays within his role and just does his thing. I hope he’s brought back next year.

by Andres B on Mar 9, 2010 10:07 AM EST reply actions

Mike,

IMO, we need a perimeter star. We have nice wings, but they are not star material. We have Brook, it’d be great to pair him with another beast, but that’s not necessary. You could use you cap space to land a nice PF who can provide the things we need (interior D, rebounding, toughness).

We need someone to fill VC used to paly here. Turner would be perfect.

But if we had a the 3rd or 4th pick, I’d be all for grabbing a stud big man. Cousins would be my 1st option. He’s an animal. Favors could be another option.

by Andres B on Mar 9, 2010 10:11 AM EST reply actions

CLee and TWill Played Well

At this point in a lost season, I’m not looking for any more wins. With the upcoming schedule we have and the playoffs getting closer and closer for some teams, it wouldn’t surprise me if we set the futility mark (or tie it). At this point, I just want to see individuals make progress. I’m deffinitely seeing that in TWill and Courtney. These two have sealed themselves as keepers, IMO. I just hope they carry this play into next season when I think we’ll be dramatically improved (from a personnel, coaching and ownership perspective) and contending for the Eastern Conference crown. Keep up the good work, fellas!

by Morph on Mar 9, 2010 10:34 AM EST reply actions

As bad as the chemistry between Brook and Yi

I think Brook and Boone could possibly be worse. The problem is that neither Yi nor Humps has been able to finish consistently on offense. Yi is quicker and has the shooting range, while Humps is stronger and defends better. However, Yi’s doesn’t have the shooting confidence he needs, and Humps just doesn’t have the shooting touch or athleticism. Maybe Nets can try Yi off the bench behind Humps, but I doubt it’ll make much of a difference.
